Why I Love the Melee Combat in Horizon Forbidden West
I have never seen such a huge moveset in an action rpg❤❤
Thanks heaps for this man, the google doc is great
Dlcs please???
Thanks for this. Good content!
Another excellent video, well done! Don't forget Low Health Regen! If you have it maxed (from weaves or built-in perks) you'll regen back up to the low-health threshold of 201 HP after only 1.5s of not taking damage. So long as you use cleansing potions to clear any damage states (especially important in the low-health state for when you're on fire, for example), you become almost impossible to kill. I wish I were better at all the different combos. The timing and sequences are really fussy on PC :(
What is the background you use in the guide? It fits very well with the contents, subtle but great!
me watching this with a ps4🥲
Melee sucks in this game
Since the making of this video Leviathan has been released I would very much like to see a video on that
How did you use the grappling hook twice on an enemy? I thought after one critical strike they get back up?
my favorite unofficial combo is light>heavy>light-heavy (the second two in quick succession in the air causes both attacks to happen on your way down.)
My main weapon is the explosive slingshot one hitting everything 😂😂
GGs ❤🎉
RIP the shrapnel effect
I know this is an older video but I was hoping someone could speak to this: I've noticed that while fighting bosses I'll use a level 5 Zan but I don't get the final "burst" of damage that you get after he does his pose. Is this just not something that works on boss fights?
if guerrilla were to add a parry mechanic, how would you implement it into the existing melee system? and to which button would you bind it? bc even though i'd love to see a parry mechanic, the controller is already pretty full
@@cherryy6380 I think it’d be a cool idea to add a parry but as you mention the controls are already very full and I’m not even sure where they could implement one. I wouldn’t want a parry to over complicate the combat system and detract from what they’ve established. Maybe map it to L1+R1 just like AC Odyssey and then map the valor surges to something else? As far as how it would function I would assume they’d utilize the shieldwing for it, and have it block weaker machine attacks… maybe even have it run on a cooldown system (i.e. after every use takes 5-15 seconds until you can use it again) maybe even when blocking stronger machine attacks the cooldown is longer. They could even implement coils/weaves for us to equip to increase the effectiveness of the parry.
@@ahtano Ahh good idea to map it to L1+R1, I'd assume they'd remap the valor surges to the standard L3+R3 like in most other games. And blocking stronger attacks resulting in longer cooldowns is also really cool!! As for the parry itself, I was thinking the shieldwing would also be a good idea. I thought a quick L1+R1 press would parry and give a short opening for a killing blow. And holding L1+R1 down would result in Aloy deploying the shieldwing in the same way some brute rebels already do, it'd have limited hp and would go on a cooldown after some damage (like the shield from the rebels). And your idea of the parry cooldown scaling with the attack strength is rly good. I think guerrilla wanted to implement a shield 'mechanic' but chose to introduce the drop shield on the d-pad instead (which is a shame imo because it's kinda clunky to use lol).
Given how much they improved melee combat in this game makes me wonder what they’ll do for a third game personally I’d like them to improve what you can do with overridden machines like giving orders and directing them and maybe riding some of the larger combat units and use their weapons and abilities.
So fun!😄
This is really cool, I'm definitely gonna follow your advice! Just need to upgrade/master the skills first, as I just defeated Barnabas last night, haha
Not sure if it's just me, but Blind Justice does not activate when using magic or a physical attack. I have switch to the Eikon and hit the Feat button to discharge the orbs.
Rare game can fight machine with melee combat, I don’t know any one except this one. I like Elden Ring or God of War type of game, which can fight with large size boss. Melee in HFW is definitely unique.
Melee in ZD was just sometimes free damage in the form of silent or critical strike... in forbidden west it's the same, plus resonator blasts and a few extra moves. Melee doesn't still do a whole lot of damage and pulling off long combos usually costs you more life than the damage you do, at least on ultra hard. My most used real melee combo is jump off, cos it's the only one that's fast enough to pull off before another machine comes to body slam me. That said, once a player can get skilled enough at the game it starts to look like machines are dodging Aloy, and that player can start applying resonator blasts left right and center, it's a whole another ballgame. Not there yet myself, I'm only trying to unlearn how to dodge like in ZD, cos apparently it doesn't work like that in FW. I always tried to dodge so the enemy doesn't hit me, but it's borderline impossible. Now dodging is all about abusing i-frames, let the enemy hit you but time dodge so well it just nullifies the attack.
Fantastic video!
If only the tutorials in the melee pits weren't so misleading...
But why is it Brilliant? sorry Im confused to what it actually does? It cancels the animation and buys you one second of time? is that correct?
Yup - because it cancels _any animation_ it lets you quickly chain skills that otherwise can't be chained because they're animation locked. It doesn't sound much use until you take into account something like the example at 0:53; you can instantly Rift Slip out of Impulse the instant the projectiles have launched, instead of waiting for the animation to finish, and follow up with a Phoenix Shift dash into the air, Wicked Wheel launcher and Upheaval ground pound. Normally, you'd cast Impulse and Clive is moved backwards while being locked into a kneeling recovery animation, allowing the enemy to land on the ground. Instead, Rift Slip dashes Clive forward and enables a longer, aerial combo.
Is this specter gauntlet on Scorched dlc? If so that's horse shit.
Reminds me of the Gammacor from Warframe
My heavens cloud doesn’t go to multiple enemies?
I would also consider the Critical Boost Valor Surge. It recharges very fast, makes it much more likely to do Crits & increases the overall damage when you do. Should pair very nicely with the Gauntlet.
The Mounted Archer buff actually goes up to a 50% increase in Damage if @ Level 4. You should always be increasing your buffs to Level 4 whenever possible for the biggest effect. Combining it with a Level 4 Steath Ranged buff will increase it by another 40% as well, and another 80% on top of that with Low Health Ranged! Therefore you can get up to a 170% buff with your first two shots if you stay in Stealth. Worth noting though that if your initial shot does over 30% of the foes total HP, they will immediately become aggro'd & you'll lose the Stealth buff of your 2nd shot.
Damage numbers have nothing to do with Tear. Tear damage is never displayed on screen.
Damage numbers have nothing to do with Tear. Tear damage is never displayed on screen. You seem a bit confused about what the numbers ok screen mean. They never ever dictate Tear damage regardless of what you hit. They always signify impact damage.
I do wish it had at least 1 Coil slot, perhaps w a very limited Coil selection. Would be nice to throw an Elite Crit Coil on it!
why play spiderman when you have grapple strike
I found melee super frustrating due to the constant interrupts, lack of a block/parry, and lack of upgrade/scaling with the melee weapon. 1v1 it does ok... but 1v1 against a meleeable machine is pretty rare...
Try to do all this without a HUD!
Aloy looks like Senua in that Thumbnail. Sooo cool
Yo, u make great videos. What are you doing now?
My Eikon build: Shiva (Aerial Blast + Diamond Dust), Garuda (Judgment Bolt + Tsunami), Odin (Gigaflare + Ultimate Demise) while wearing the "double strike" and "precision dodge cooldown" gear.
Dlcs please!!
those transitions are so cool omg, it makes sense that all of the valor surges have the same camera tracking but this editing looks like it's down to the damn keyframe
Does it do Crit hits?
I shy away from melee in this game, but your videos are making me rethink that. I'm ready to get a warrior bow and give this a go. I'm also impressed by the time you've put into figuring all this out. Thanks, I appreciate it.
Also, this video only went over the skills & none of what ppl ACTUALLY need to know, like what attacks to use & how to actually fight with it. Thus this is little more than showing off. Builds are easy, play technique is tough. That is what you should have been covering. Like what combos to use, how to chain them, exactly what Melee moves you should be prioritizing in combat, etc. This helps almost noone.
The video showing the Tremortusk shouldn't be considered the usual outcome, even if you do things right. Just sayin'. Best to keep things to small & mid sized machines for this.
You legit don't need to do a low health melee playthru to get the benefits of knockdowns, crit strikes & resonator blasts. You can do that anyway even wirhout Low Health Melee. That's what I'd recommend, considering those things are the most effective in a Melee play style even when using Low Health Melee.
It's a VERY fun way to play for skilled players! Still, it still doesn't work great against large machines on Ultra Hard. You're still better off using a low health ranged tactic for those. Against small & mid sized machines tho, it's great! Using knockdowns, crit strikes & resonator blasts are musts!
The ThunderBolt shredder gauntlet works well w/grapple strike. It generates a ton of damage/tear, and the shock builds up fast (I'll need to look into the valor surge you mentioned). Then after the strike, fire again. If it's the fourth hit, you get the gauntlet explosion on top. Here's a "master class" on using the gauntlet. It's so much fun. Like playing murderous Jai Alai. The animations for catching the shredder are cool. th-cam.com/video/0ysjKJ4jtCU/w-d-xo.html
i really started appreciating the melee in this game when i realized it's the only practical way to manage those goddamn kangaroo jacks. i hate leapslashers 😭
wait what? you can move lightning rod after its placed? how? how did i never know that
