Heavy Air Laser - Dinghy Sailing (11/3/2024)
Its November and sailing season ain't dead yet! took the laser out with some high-level sailors to get some more boat handling experience and just over all to have fun. I did capsize a lot though.

nice 1 dude
That stuff is very hard to do man.
Nice save.
Pretty sure you're crazy! Have a great winter buddy.
Need to hike more, no reason your feet should be on the leeward side of the boat
There actually so many mistakes in this video that you’d need decades to count them all. Thats for the advice, I plan on replacing the hiking strap because it’s being held together by bungie cord and a prayer.
Practice makes perfect. Pretty good boat handling and very good recovery from both the spin wrap and not getting the kite all the way up. looks like the tapes didn't get run after the mexican so not surprising it was wrapped up a bit. Helm needs to calm his tiller a bit.. hard to do sometimes in close maneuvers. Keep up the practice and smooth out a few maneuvers and you'll be top 5 in no time.
Am i seeing stuff or was there something in the water with you..? 👀
@@DeezLouize Lol, if you’re talking about the splash off the left, that was mud coming off the mast… or was it?
@@nolankrohaahhh yes it was
Sitting here watching this with stupid tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat because it brings back so many memories of my offshore sailing days. Congratulations on a great race and your second place finish. Well done!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! We had a fantastic race. Hopefully you can get out on the water soon ⛵️

Nicely done!
Nice job dude
That was awesome

Nice video. You might consider using a barberhauler on the genoa upwind. It could allow you to sail 2-3 degrees higher
Use the jib for speed to move into first row when ur burried like that pre start. You can shoot into the gap on ur lane pushing a high mode and the windward boat up or even take one gap to leeward for a hook. First start you took out the jib 30 secs to late and only after the boats in first row. Second start u need to demand ur room from the windward boat more adamantly. Fair winds and sail on :)
This season really flew by. Awesome racing with/against you guys, looking forward to next year, and maybe we'll see you in Davis Island!
Cursing and swearing won't help. Try gybing back on to the other tack. The kite might untangle itself the same way it tangled in the first place
Although the swearing may seem unnecessary and useless, my channel isn’t one of those that cuts out content. Cussing in long form content may be censored, but I look to bring a realistic and an on-the-boat experience which includes and is not limited to mistakes or swearing.
I am familiar with a lot of that nautical language , especially the part after the spin wraps around the forestay.
What class is this boat?
J70
@@nolankroha thank you
Yikes, is there a full video.
@@18thhoursailing The video is attached to the short, but it’s called “Down Wind Weapon” on my channel.
A few basic commands said calmly would make the trimmer's job easier: trim on, ease, hike, etc. Trimmer spent a lot of time looking around, instead of fine tuning the headsail.
Try to have an exit in this conditons quite fast as an helmsman you feel when the rudder lose grip in the water if you are quick to say that. The main trimmer can help you down just lose some main and also lose the kicker dont have the kicker to hard as well and then you need to be aggressiv on the rudder when you lose the grip or you just feel that the boat wants to head you really needs to pull fast the rudder towards you until you comes down and feels that the rudder are neutral and when broch drop the main completly. When you guys broch you did nothing with the main it was trimd like when you sail downwind
A lean mean well-oiled racing machine! 😄
You know it!
This is one of the best regattas anywhere.
It really was fun!
To bad there isnt a video from a TP52 or Santa Cruz 70.
Congrats. Ninth overall is amazing!!!
Great sailing! It looks like you have already have a shackle on your boom. When sailing your gennaker in this kind of wind, thread your halyard through the shackle. As soon as your whiping-out, throw open the halyard. This may save you once or twice and get you sailing again way faster
I was out racing against you guys that night on Chichirara. lots of fun. nice video!
Bro thats crazy, i just sailed for the first time recently and it was scary when the boat heeled. I cant imagine what it feels like when it heels that much.
Nice! Hopefully you enjoyed it! Honestly these boats are made to not capsize so we felt comfortable. Plus, we've wiped out like this before.
How long did it take?
About 4 days.
send it!!!
Why without jibe ?
J70s (like many other similar planing boats with asymmetric spins) sail very high sometimes in order to get up onto a plane. Sometimes if you sail high and a puff hits, especially a header, the boat will become overpowered and broach like you see here.
That looks fun!!
I think I enjoyed that day of sailing more than the entire year. Definitely a highlight!
Awesome!
somebody forgot to run tapes
Why do you have 4 people in what looks like a 420😂😂😂
5 people
I mean its a j70 which is wayyy bigger
Great take, really fun to watch! greetings from brazil🖖
Maybe consider putting everyone in the back of the boat?
@@paulkircher9542 that’s too reasonable! How would we have fun that way?
these people aren’t great at sailing
Care to elaborate? Was it the skipper or the crew that you're referring to? Or both? The crew was obviously still learning. But it seems like the skipper did fine, no? To keep the boat upright and not collide with anything on a day with such breeze shows some level of competence, IMO.
oups, that batten! but good action and speed ;-)
🛷
Mainsail trim is too flat up top. Let out the main halyard a tiny bit, and/or slack the outhaul on the mainsail clew and completely release that leech trim line. Let the sail twist at the top to dump air aloft and reduce the windage aloft.
wtf did you just say to me
If they’re overpowered, you don’t want to add depth with twist.
@@blisterrzzkid5338that's what they do in windsurfing
Hey! Just somethings I've learned from sailing the J70 and from watching the video. You guys need more rig tension your forestay is sagging which is a indicator to put on more backstay or turns onto the rig. Try to pinch up into the wind more what will make the main trimmers job a lot easier. In breeze like this I have the first 3 inches or more backwinded in my jib. Snug up your vang going upwind so you boom doesn't lift and powers up the main and then it will spill the air. We normally don't ease our mainsail that much going upwind we would have ours, traveler middle and mainsheet mostly in this helps reduce flogging the main and make you go into the higher mode. The helm should drive down almost dead downwind as the kite is going up what will make getting the pole out and spinnaker up so much easier since it is hidden behind the main. (Be careful of waves if you go dead down wind) On the gybes it is very important to keep the apparent wind up or you will wipe out you gybed at less then 6 knots when your main switches sides the wind will catch up and you will wipe out. A big part of losing speed on that gybe was getting stuck in a wave what slowed you down. I'm no pro but these are just things I've been told by pros so hope this helps!
@@slushxr357 Thanks! Going to make sure to implement this new found knowledge next time.
was thinking all of these as I watched. sailed the SB20 for a couple of years and the 70 is very similar to it. Now mostly race the J80s which feel like a comfort boat in comparison to the 70 and the SB
also props the the main trimmer. arms of steel
Great content!
Nice to see real sailing without autopilots!
nice
