GeneralPelle - Scale Models & Dioramas

Hi, i'am GeneralPelle. I'am building scale models & dioramas. Have fun watching!
Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow Helicopter - Meng 1/35 - Scale Model Full Build
Embark on an in-depth journey as I build, paint, and weather a highly detailed AH-64 Apache scale model! This video takes you step by step through the entire process, covering advanced techniques such as cockpit detailing, aftermarket 3D decals, scratch-building, realistic weathering, and diorama creation. From the very first cut to the final presentation, I’ll show you how to transform a standard kit into an ultra-realistic, battle-worn helicopter that looks like it just returned from a mission.
Whether you’re a seasoned modeler looking for new techniques or a beginner eager to learn, this build offers tons of useful tips to help you take your projects to the next level. Stay tuned until the end to see the final reveal and an immersive diorama that brings the Apache to life!
🔧 Building the Cockpit - Detailing the Heart of the Apache
The build starts where it always does-with the cockpit. This kit comes with decent plastic detailing, but to push realism further, I replace the raised plastic instrument panels with 3D-printed aftermarket decals, which add an incredible level of depth. However, to install these, the original details must first be carefully removed using a nipper and rotary tool, ensuring a smooth, even surface.
Once cleaned up, the cockpit receives a base coat of NATO Black, followed by dry brushing to subtly highlight raised areas and make the details pop. The difference this simple technique makes is incredible, instantly transforming the plain plastic into something far more lifelike and dynamic. The 3D decals are carefully positioned with acrylic glue, pressed into place, and left to dry. The final result? A cockpit that looks far superior to the out-of-the-box version!
🎨 Painting & Weathering the Fuselage - A Challenge with US Helo Drab
With the cockpit finished, it’s time to assemble the main fuselage. The fit of this Meng kit is surprisingly good, with only minimal seams needing correction. However, like any model, it still requires careful sanding and putty work to get everything looking perfect.
Next comes the painting process, which starts with preshading-a technique where panel lines and rivets are outlined in black to create depth once the base coat is applied. In theory, this should show through subtly under the final paint, adding a layered, realistic effect. But here’s the problem: US Helo Drab is a tricky color. It starts with a strong brown tone, and only after multiple coats does it shift into the expected dark green. Unfortunately, these extra layers completely bury the preshading, making the effort almost pointless.
To compensate, I move to post-shading instead. Mixing US Helo Drab with black, I carefully darken panel edges, then use a lighter mix to bring variation within each panel. This gives the Apache a much more realistic, operational look, avoiding the flat, toylike appearance that a single uniform coat would create. The difference is night and day!
🎨 Scratch-Building & Detailing the Engine - A Showpiece of the Build
One of the standout features of this kit is the option to expose the engine bay, showcasing the intricate mechanical components inside. Instead of sealing everything up, I decide to display one of the twin turbines, making it the perfect opportunity for some scratch-building!
While the plastic parts are decently detailed, real-life reference photos show that the engine compartments of these helicopters are crammed with wiring and small components. To replicate this, I drill small holes and add lead wires to simulate realistic cable routing. Hollow metal rods are also used to mount these wires, providing a cleaner, more professional look. The result? A far more convincing and complex-looking engine bay.
Painting the engine requires Alclad 2 metallic paints, which give a highly realistic finish that standard acrylics simply can’t match. Washes and fuel streaks are then added to make the engine look properly used, as if it has seen its fair share of combat missions.
🎨 Creating a Realistic Airfield Diorama - Bringing the Scene to Life
A model like this deserves more than just a display stand-it needs a diorama! I decide to place the Apache on a modern airfield, complete with concrete slabs, a desert environment, and scattered maintenance equipment.

Good morning General, that was an absolutely fantastic build, your attention to detail was really at the next level, congratulations on an outstanding job, as for the base that was also truly excellent, but who said you can't get straight bananas? Best regards from Australia, Les😊
Woowaaaweewow
It would be nice if manufacturers would design cockpits that can be painted, and that are ready for 3D printed decals just by choosing the parts that the builder wants to use.
@@kraigson that would be nice. Maybe one day they will do so. 3d decals are a new thing, so who knows.

"It wouldn't go well in a competition". Are you serious?
@@jansmycka4338 yes indeed. The putty work is just not good, especially on the underside are wide visible seams. Honestly I don’t know if that is a criteria in competition, as I never attended one and not planing to do so.
3 P's as usual General. Chipping? I use Pinterest extensively to get as much accuracy as my improvingly clumsy work will attempt, and I'm pretty sure I've seen and have pinned plenty of chipped and also very dirty jet fighters. This F-16 has been treated with great attention to detail and is rather stunning sir.
@@NormanSmith-l3k Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement! I have to admit, I wasn’t entirely sure about the chipping when I worked on it, but after looking through reference pictures, I saw that some jets definitely show signs of heavy wear. It’s really reassuring to hear that the details came across well and look realistic. Your feedback and attention to detail inspire me to keep improving, thanks again for taking the time to comment
It was great to hear the spoken commentary sir. Your English is probably better than mine! Your accent is totally fine and comes across very well and does not distract us from the content so press on General (I still think it should be Brigadier). And it's my turn to be honoured by you including me in your video. I'm truly blown away. And so it's back to the Tamiya 1/48 Focke Wulf Fw190 D-9. Yes it's coming s-l-o-w-l-y to it's end and it's going to be a dirty bird. My tribute to Oberleutnant Wilhelm "Willi" Heilman of III./JG 54. I just hope I've got the correct personal markings he describes very loosely in his book. I couldn't find anything anywhere else. Thank you again for your work, I'll continue to watch and learn avidly and ask the odd question here and there. PS This brilliant in 4 years!! It takes me that long to get the box open. Amazing.
@@NormanSmith-l3k Thank you so much for your kind words and support! I’m truly humbled by your feedback, and it means a lot to hear that the commentary and accent are working well for the content. I’m also thrilled that you feel honored being included in the video, it’s the least I could do considering your incredible contributions and passion for the hobby. Your Tamiya 1/48 Fw190 D-9 project sounds amazing, and the tribute to Oberleutnant Heilmann is such a meaningful touch. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts, it really keeps me motivated to keep improving and sharing. Cheers!
Love the video and the work done ! I have an old model of U-boat mounted, but was afraid to paint it for years ! Without aiming at the same result, I might try something... at least with some gray ;))
@@MoviesFlaFla Thank you very much . Give it a try, u-boats are always fun to paint. Happy building
i bought this kit as austria is upgrading there leopard 2a4 tanks to 2a7 i am going to make the austrian version even though austria is still going through transforming the old tanks to these ones i thought i might do it a little early as austrian tanks are green colored with no camo so unless they do a camo i will paint it the austrian green.
@@richardkrotec1440 sounds like a fun project. Happy building
Fantastic job. Please keep up this important art form. In this case I have a vested interest. My father was the Group Bombadier for the 100th Bomb Group.
Oh that’s an honor. I will of course and hope you’ll enjoy that build of mine.
Honestly I thought it was my interior modifications too that was causing fit issues. The fuselage half’s did t want to come together despite removing pins and sanding. I finally got unsealed and filled in the seams nice only for it to crack twice on me when I lifted it by the wings. Super frustrating. My semi solution was to use a thin flexible tip on my bottle of superglue to flood glue into the bottom of the fuselage under the walkway for the waist gunners. Hope it works. I also feel like extensive interior detailing was a waste of time because you won’t be able to see much of it but we will see when I take off the masks. Keep up the great work.
@@InSidious1805 yeah I think so, too. But others have also reported fitting issues with this kit without doing any fancy interior modifications. So you’ll never know. Your are totally correct most of the modifications inside won’t be visible anyway. I’ll personally do it mainly for my TH-cam videos, where they are indeed visible for the viewer until it’s closed.
@ I was trying to figure out how to make a custom mounting system possibly out of acrylic or metal rods but thinking about drilling sizable holes makes me super nervous. Do you have any recommendations?
Just for clearification: you mean to show it in an in flight position?
@@GeneralPelleScaleModels correct I my vision was to pose it angled up but turning to the side slightly so you can hunch down to see inside the bomb bay. My friend wants to just hang it using strings but considering I one time had the fuselage split at the back end after I was messing with the wings I’m not sure that’s a great idea. I spent so much time filling in that center seam and riveting only for it to split. Sorry for the late response I’m not sure why I don’t receive notifications from TH-cam
Where does the weather sound come from? It's on a loop?
@@jericoba Thats from a speaker installed inside the clouds. It’s not exactly a loop, it plays the sounds randomly.
@@GeneralPelleScaleModels Yes, the speaker, but what's the sound source playback? Not Spotify, is it? ;-)
No, the speaker has a chip build in with some sound files as mp3. And those are played randomly in an random interval. Nothing fancy. They aren’t synchronized with the light, which is kind of realistic, as the light travels faster as sound.
@GeneralPelleScaleModels Ah, neat solution! Simple and effective, and yet so realistic, as you said. Thanks for replying.

Use more under decal liquid when you are repositing decals. A lot of it. I recommend a micro set solution, try to put it under decal and then move it.
@@sebastiannocon2142 Thats what I did. The decals are just not as moveable as the once’s from for example catatograph or tamiya.
@GeneralPelleScaleModels I applied Eduard, Tamiya, Techmod decals, and they are quite similar. Eduarda are thinnest. Maybe the paint finish is more satin than glossy? The smoothness of the surface has a big influence
@sebastiannocon2142 it does indeed. As said in the video, multiple layers of glossy varnish had been applied. Just for clearificatoion: I didn’t say they aren’t moveable. They are and you can also see me moving them. I just said they aren’t as moveable as other decals.

Oh thank you very much. Glad you liked it :)
Waited ages for this episode 😆 was not disappointed awesome work buddy. Need to find the motivation to carry on with mine now Christmas is out the way!! Looking forward to the next one 🙏🏻
@@robertacott2671 First of all, thank you very much for your support. It means a lot to me and makes me keep going what I’m doing here. I’m also glad you liked this episode. But I fear you have to wait another few weeks for the next one. I’ll be quite busy at my job for the upcoming weeks / months and with wings + engines to make it will take some time to finish. Nevertheless, stay tuned mate 🙏
@@GeneralPelleScaleModels You're very welcome. Looking forward to the next installment. No rush at all my friend 🙏🏻
Hi general, your work is just amazing, you did it well !! Just for your information, normaly with Eduard decals, you can remove the carrier film by peeling it
Hi Duke, thank you very much. Indeed, they can. I actually tried that on my f-4 build, and messed it up hardly. Since then I leave them on, actually they aren’t very thick, so it (hopefully) wont be visible in the final build. I might try it out again on a more „cheaper“ build again and learn how to do it properly. Thanks for the tip nevertheless.
I am suing the blu tack thing for years the tip is to squiz down the tape as much as you can so it doesnt make huge bulge and you are using a lot of it ,you need to try to make it thinner (half of what you are using now ) and when the bulge is smaller you minimize the overspray ! What i like to do after i place the tape like you did i go again and squiz it down because the blu tack shrinks a bit and also the angle of your airbrush needs to focus on the top part of the tape and less pointing inside ,not sure how to explain it better ,Ideal is also to build thin layers especially on the blu tack ! For me the biggest "mistake" lets say you have done is that the blu tack is very thick when is thinner is also sticking better ! Model looks great so far !
@@rOEN911 Thank you so much for the Tipps. I’m currently doing a Su-27 build with the blue camouflage thingy and definitely will try it out on it. Sounds totally reasonable. Thanks again
Whens the next episode? Great work by the way!
