I’ve wanted to attempt to fly a lap around AuTrain Island for a few years. Last week I looked into it but the wind was slightly faster than I deemed safe. Today looked like a good day, though. The wind was out of the South at 10-20 mph, which was a slight concern due to it being a headwind on my return flight. This flight required me to park on the side of M-28 in order to be in range for my dr...

F16 Crash Site and a Dynamite Shack
มุมมอง 93 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the site of an F16C fighter crash from December 8th, 2020. The pilot was on a training mission one foggy, rainy night and his GPS and avionics glitched out resulting in a nose first dive into the ground at 690 miles per hour. I flew my drone there and again at a dynamite shack near Mink Creek.

    I remember back in about 1995, my company did about 144 soil borings on this site for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to assess adverse impact from the previous missile launch sites. Mostly concerned about the past storage tanks. Crazy thing is that they did it in the winter. Why not wait till it's warm, I can't say, but it was for the government so what can you expect.

    FYI: this was never a US Air Force Base. The ONLY presence the USAF had on site was the Kincheloe BOMARC Missile site. THe USAF never had a flying mission there.

      There was a small contingent stationed there. Most were bussed in daily from Kinchheloe AFB. MY girlfriend's husband worked fire suppression there. Local drag races were held there during the 1960's. CHRYSLER Automotive used it for cold weather battery research d😮using the later 1970's 😢

      I have now visited Bulldog Lake dam from both the East (off the AAA road) and the West (off the Pesheekee Grade). From the AAA route you could actually keep your feet dry. From the West it will be a longer hike and you will have a wet crossing that will be deeper than your boots, but the first 3.5 miles is a well established trail (then it is bushwhack for about 3 or 4 miles). The mileage from the AAA route is 0.8 miles of good trail to the intersection of the East and West branches of the Yellow Dog River, about another 1/4 mile of good trail and then pure bushwhack for about 3 miles.

    This is an amazing video!!!! Thank you so much for the great footage!!! I live close to Trestle Falls and have a question: How did you access it? My hubby and I have been trying and see that the Neeji road access point is gated by Cleveland Cliffs. Again, thanks for such a cool video!!

    • @Goingforbroke71
      @Goingforbroke71 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Be Sparkly, You can park next to the tracks and just walk the two track next to the track to the bridge, or you can park at the dam on a small access road just off to the left as you enter. Follow the gravel road until it meets the tracks and then turn right onto the tracks and follow the two track to the bridge. I’d guess from the dam the walk is about 2 miles.. maybe 1.25 miles if you parked next to the tracks.

    Raco was not an air force base. It was an auxillary airfield. During the WW2-Korea era there ware anti_aircraft guns there. In the 60's a Bomarc aa missile site was there. After than, not much.

    We've camped in areas from both the North and SouthWest ends. The Southwest end is more established and obvious...accessible via the Pesheekee Grade road going North from US 41 just West of Van Riper State Park. The Northern route is less obvious off of the AAA road. It involves a river crossing or two and the trail isn't as obvious.

    Just looked that area over Sept of 2013. Hiked from southern end to White Deer Lake then north to the top of Bulldog lake. Nice flat and well used area at Bulldog - established fire ring. We found Bulldog falls from there and also the Crows Nest with a view of Superior that is amazing. Well worth the trip. Thanks for the footage of the trail - it looks like you were coming from the north ens of the trail. Will be back in a year of so to check out more.
