Brogna Arts: Watercolor sketchbook tour
Here is a peak into the Brogna Arts painting process with my watercolor sketchbook tour. These sketchbooks start back in October 2020 and go all the way up to August 2021, showing my growth and journey with Brogna Arts. They art filled with lots of art and painting warm ups, color studies, portrait and anatomy studies. You can also see the first developments of my watercolor frogs through these sketchbooks. (Watercolor frog greeting cards are still avalible on my Etsy shop!)
This was filmed in August of 2021, right before I moved back to NYC to resume pursuing my other artistic career in performing arts.
I haven't been able to make as much art in NYC which makes me sad, but I do need to work other jobs to pay my bills and having two different artistic careers is not very lucrative.

    If you're doing a lot of wet and wet, and flat washers, Arches is awesome. If you're doing more illustrations, fewer layers, where you want vibrant colors, Arches suck. It all depends on your style of painting.

    The problem I have with arches is that they use rabbit glue in their sizing. I'm a former rabbit owner so I will never use any products that contain rabbit. I love the Strathmore cotton watercolour paper (500 series) and it's vegan. I'm not vegan, but since I go through paper very quickly, I'd rather animals didn't die to make my paper

    • @brognaarts3266

      Thank you for sharing Raeanne! I know other artists have had trouble with the animal sizing in the paper. I have heard some dogs love to snack on it because of the sizing. I have been exploring other cotton papers since I made this video and will look into Strathmores cotton paper.

      I tried Strathmore 100% cotton paper. It came in a package of approximately index sized cards and it was well under $10. I forget how many there were, and I don’t know if this is the same material they use in their other cotton sizes. I’m not sure what the weight was but it didn’t feel flimsy. I was terribly disappointed! It almost felt hot-pressed b/c it had no discernible texture. Absorbance--Nada! Flow-Nothing moved! For a tight color & ink illustration, probably OK. So, a terrible 100% cotton experience for me . I’ve many different weights that I‘be tried thru the yrs. all from S. More. I bought a pad decades ago that had a virtual collection of their papers, at least 8 different types or more-from 140 to 300, hot press, cold, NOT, rough- & I bet the 300lb was cotton. But I was in my 20’s & had NO idea how much I would love to have that today! Anyway, if you can share the StrAthmore 100% c. paper that you like, I will give it a try. I’m just a beginner (still) but retired now and with the internet I may really learn something this time around . I have used S.M. w.c. Paper quite a bit in mixed media-usually chalk pastel over water washes & it can really hold a lot of layers. Very strong. But it is only for those like me who do strive for the velvet appeal of more traditional pastel work. ok,ok--I am seriously out of hear--sorry to bend ears--Learning to create is Such a turn-on! g’day to you..

      Rabbits are slaughtered for meat. If you don’t use the hides for something, they’d go to waste. No nobody has the power to stop people from eating rabbits. No rabbits are ever killed just for their hides. The hides are a byproduct. Therefore, not using rabbit-sourced sizing (basically gelatine) doesn’t save rabbits. You might boycott made-in-China products cuz they still eat dogs in many places there for example. Just saying. Cheers.

    • @brognaarts3266
      @brognaarts3266 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! They should be able to fit. I haven’t tried it myself with other brands full pans yet, BUT…The pans fit into a sort of metal row tray with a clip/ stopping at the back, and you can move that stopper around to accommodate for different pans/ snugness.

    • @irritatedlibrarian9057
      @irritatedlibrarian9057 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @fidgetyhuman
      @fidgetyhuman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Half pans are 1.5 ml and standard full pans are 3-3.2 ml. White nights full pans are a bit smaller at 2.5 ml (almost like a 3/4 pan). The standard pan size is constant across brands like Winsor & Newton, Schmincke, DS etc. White nights, Yarka, Ladoga (all made by Nevskaya Palitra) use the 3/4 pan size.

    • @brognaarts3266
      @brognaarts3266 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kubra! I am glad you like the video, thank you for watching. I haven't had too much time with the yellows in this pallet in particular but my go to yellow is usually a cadmium yellow medium for portraits of people with fairer skin. A lot of the yellows in this palette are fairly opaque which could be a problem to some depending upon the artist's painting style. I was having trouble with the Naples yellow because it was giving me muddy grey opaque mixes due to its opacity. This set does not have the white nights Hanza yellow, I believe that is in the 36 color set in the plastic case so I unfortunately cannot give you an informed opinion about that color.. As for the Auroleon yellow this is the most transparent out of the yellows in this particular palette and I have a feeling it will become my go to soon. It is a warmer yellow similar to the cadmium yellow medium, but not as opaque. This means it will have cleaner and more transparent mixes. As for the lemon yellow, it is a typical cool yellow, and will mix easily with blues to make nice green tones. But it is more opaque than other lemon yellows that I have tried from other brands. As for the reds in the pallet, I love the selection. You have both warm and cool reds and a larger variety of opacities. Of course the cadmium red is more opaque. I honestly really like the Rudy, Carmine, and the Madder lake red light. the Ruby is a cool red, the Carmine is more of a pinkish red and is really nice for pink flowers when diluted a lot. And the Madder lake red is a warmer red that is not as opaque as the cadmium red. Some of the other reds are warm and lean more to orange to me. I personally like to mix my oranges so I can get more specific and varied skin tones. I hope this helps, Please let me know if you have any more question!

      @@brognaarts3266 Thank you very much for this elaborate answer. I really like White Nights. I bought some of the paints in tube and some of them in pans. I personally find blues very vibrant and effective. I have Bright Blue, Ultramarine and Indathrene Blue in tubes. I am not so sure about the earth colors. I think the best part of white nights is blues and reds.:) Besides it is cheaper than any other artist quality paints which are sold in Turkey. :)

      @@kubrau93 Yes their price is unbeatable compared to other artist grade watercolors. I've had this palette for maybe 3 weeks now so I am still exploring what it has to offer. Happy to help!
