    He's clearly super talented, but there's no way any serious studio would bet their livelihood on a single guy's side project. He should get funding and start to work on the engine full time, with a proper team.

      Well, provided that he wants to bet his life making a living out of game engine development and competing with engines like Unreal, Unity or Godot. And it seems like this business is difficult to be profitable (see Unity financial issues, Godot being open source, an not-sure-whether-Unreal-is-financed-by-the-money-it-earns) :D

      @@GameEngineeringPodcastYeah, who knows. Maybe it could compete with something more niche with a different target audience (like, say, Unigine). Or maybe not. I have no idea of course... But if I was him, I would either try to get funding from someone who knew how to make money out of this, or admit it's just a hobby and go fully open source, no royalties.

    Thanks for the interview! Lots of good details and insights from Amir, for technical details, the game dev process, and the business. I can see how important hot reloading would be for ideation, and how Ruby helps with that. I'm used to thinking more on the "compile everything up-front to avoid errors" side of the spectrum, but this was a good pitch for the dynamism of the other side. I wonder how this affects the bug fixing process though? How often a bug comes from state created by now-updated code and you just wash it away, or whether objects changing each others' contents at runtime makes detection or reproduction tricky?

    • @GameEngineeringPodcast
      @GameEngineeringPodcast 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Can’t speak for Amir, but you can easily restart the simulation, if you’d like to reset the state - for the bigger changes that depend on state of the other entities it might be a way to go

  • @pik910

    "Politics" very much matter in community building. I assume he is referring to the Code of Conduct, anything else would get removed as out of scope. A CoC is like a rule of law and making basic value statements (no discrimination, be nice) known is better that arbitrarily banning people. Godot has a nice and productive community, devs and minorities don't have to put up with harassment, you can feel safe doing business with them. Meanwhile nimlang has no CoC, the same mostly white men who would feel belittled by one or just don't care (intended subtext: it's not about you) run a semi-toxic community. Turns out the lead dev believes in all sorts of conspiracy theories and promotes 'violence for Jesus' to 'protect the children' from LGBQT world domination, main contributors have quit, you can imagine the future of the project. Godot has done everything right.

    • @tedbendixson
      @tedbendixson 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I will say that what I read went beyond a standard code of conduct, something I take to be a clear criticism of our economic system. They probably removed it, and that's fine, but it just left a really bad taste in my mouth. It was one of those things where I was like "okay, if some core person on their team is saying this, I don't want to learn more about this engine. I'm dodging a bullet by not getting involved." I think the same thing about corporations getting involved in things like pride month, and I say this as a gay man. I just think businesses need to focus on serving their customers and nothing more. If you can't win by providing a great product, and have to resort to politics to build an audience, that's just weak.

    Hi there! Nice to find this video suggested by algorithm. I like the guest since I am subscribed to Ted's channel and I agree with his philosophy regarding creating your own game engine. It is a tough deal, but in the end of the day, you do not rely on the company that it makes it. It is a strong point that overweight downside like "you need to maintain it". Duh, for me, it is advantage, since it is the way to learn. Speaking of learning, he has also a great video about learning in the hard way, which is the best one for me on Ted's channel. I know that fighting the engine is actually a super rare thing to happen, and that even when I do there will always be a way around it to do what I want, but it's like I have OCD for this one small thing. I can't stand it at all. Also, I hate OOP as well. Not because I have any real criticism of it, the `class` keyword just confuses me because I am very dumb.

      It sounds like you've just recently started your programming journey. Don't "hate" anything you don't know. Start by learning it, and with some experience you will be able to assess the positive and negative aspects of a given programming concept. `class`es are ubiquitous and in order to advance (either in OOP, FP, procedural or w/e) you'll need to learn them and the 'abstraction' concept, which they are used for

    I think Flax is the best for 3d! Unreal is just too heavy for basic games and it already takes 15Gb just for the lib without any assets and the editor is so laggy its just pain using it. Unity is good for 2d but the way it spam saves the things u do eats my memory and it doesn't provide any engine runtime access also the plans are just bad paying $1800 for abonnement that isn't permanent is just wrong. I started with Unity and still use it for 2D I wanted to make 3D game and I had issues with the runtime and couldn't fixed I even started reverse engineering it got some success but wasn't worthy. About Godot its the worst trash the source is a mess the community is terrible and aggressive and the gdscript is useless. I started searching for alternative engine found Stride It was good but the C# or whatever didn't handle the performance quality as I expected after some time I saw Flax in someone's description and I decided to try it and loved it. I prefer flax because its not mess of random codes like other engines and the editor is just lovely to use and it compiles for seconds.
