Contact - Get the bat on the ball properly
Contact points define how the ball gets hit. Knowing the meaning of being around the ball, above the ball, or below the ball helps players figure out the cause of their ball flight.

Noting matters more than quality contact. Consistently hitting the ball off the best part of the barrel produces higher velocity hits. Taping a wristband on the sweet spot will give a player auditory feedback, letting them know they found the right part of the barrel.

Hitting Formula: Hips or Hands?
มุมมอง 9595 ปีที่แล้ว
Hitting Formula - Ballplayers generally fall into two schools of thought, Hips or Hands. While all swings contain elements of both hips and hands it is important to figure out which parts of the body are firing and when. In this video you'll see two common swing patterns that players utilize. Both methods can create quality results.
PLATE COVERAGE - The Rule of 2/3rd's
มุมมอง 3995 ปีที่แล้ว
As players move up in the game it gets difficult to cover the whole plate as a hitter. Pitchers are throwing harder with a lot more movement. Therefore it is wise for hitters to come to the plate with an approach that focuses on a select area of the strike zone.
HIPS - ARMS - WRIST: What Dominates Your Swing?
มุมมอง 7045 ปีที่แล้ว
The Hips, Arms and Wrist are the predominate force creators in a swing. All players use a different combination of each source (hips-arms-wrist) to provide the energy for the swing. Yet when a swing is too relient on solely one source the swing becomes imbalanced.
Hitting: Timing & Adjustments
มุมมอง 4926 ปีที่แล้ว
Figuring out how to create timing with the front foot is key. This video shows how Anthony Rizzo uses two different approaches/set-ups. You will see a high leg kick and a no-stride swing. What is vital to know is that the front toe should touch down on the ground around the halfway point to gain the right timing.

    So this is basically what the last play in the movie Mr. Baseball was. When Jack bunted down the third base line, he created a safety squeeze.

  • @rslwannabe9475
    @rslwannabe9475 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So 1st and 3rd bunt.. 3rd basemen and 1stbasemen start running in... If it's hit to the pitcher or catcher, they go back. If it's hit to one of them then the other goes back. Ex- Hit to 3rd base the 1st basemen goes back. Shortstop automatically goes 2nd and 2nd basemen goes 1. If it's hit to the third basemen then the 2nd basemen either takes 1st or covers 1st if the 1st basemen got back. If it's hit to the 3rd basemen, or the 3rdbasemen doesn't get back to the bag, then the pitcher takes 3rd. Correct?

    This video is 3 years old. Why am I just seeing now? I've always wondered why I sometimes hit these up and back foul balls. Omg, no one has ever broken it down like this before. Stoping the rotation too early is a swing killer! It's a flaw that creeps into my swing for sure and is likely the reason I don't hit with power consistently. Got to keep the focus on completing the core rotation through the ball. That's how you hit with power. What a gem of a video! I'm going to share this with all of my teammates who struggle at the plate! Thanks for posting! This is worth smashing the like and subscribe buttons!

    I think some people get confused on proper swing mechanics and what some drills are designed to do. Clearly this is not a drill on proper mechanics of the swing but is designed to counter the early barrel dump that some hitters struggle with... similar to purposely hitting a hook to counteract a slice in golf.

    Hey coach should your swing plane be like a Ferris wheel like JD Martinez? Should I try to apply that to my swing??

    • @baseballtipswithcoachavery9621
      @baseballtipswithcoachavery9621 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say the majority of MLB hitters have a slightly upward attack angle as they hit the ball. I use the noodle to show players how the correct angles that are too steep down and at times too steep up (see my cure roll over video). The ferris wheel swing can help create a better chance to get more lift up on the ball, but no matter what the barrel of the bat still must hit just below the equator of the baseball to make it go in the air. Thanks for watching!

    • @alexsantiago6421
      @alexsantiago6421 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Baseball Tips with Coach Avery how should you create the Ferris wheel swing then? Swing down at the back of the strike zone then come up??

  • @Bostonschwagdad
    @Bostonschwagdad 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Isn't there more to it in the example with the barrel below the green line? Isn't his hands supposed to be above the barrel and then he drops the barrel on a lower pitch?. Or is it more that he is dropping his barrel on a pitch that isn't necessarily a low pitch?

    • @Bostonschwagdad
      @Bostonschwagdad 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, he seems more "knobby" on the pitch so that his knob is travelling too far and not allowing his barrel to get to the ball and drive it up the middle or pull.

    • @baseballtipswithcoachavery9621
      @baseballtipswithcoachavery9621 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for commenting. In this case the barrel is quickly falling below the plane of the pitch causing a down & across attack angle. This is happening because the batter has reached his hands out too far away from his body (casting) before rotating, therefore he pulls his hands in toward his body to have a chance at making contact.

      @baseballtipswithcoachavery9621 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      KB thanks for watching. Great question - hard to give a perfect explanation without a video but sometimes players respond better to the cue of, bump the pitcher with your lead hip after your front foot touches the ground. Shifting the hips forward makes the midline near the pelvis more in front of the sternum. Ive also used a long pool noodle holding it from the other-side batters box while they hit off the tee or take soft toss from a partner. I put the noodle just a few inches in front of the batters head from where it would be at the end of their stride. If they ram their head into the noodle I say, you just got your head cut off by the sword. Saw the highlight of your player crushing the ball to the wall in LF. Good luck to him, he's got some pop!

      I tried to upload a swing of his batting lefty, He hasn't done that in a few years, but you notice his head doesn't drift in the lefty swing after heel plant, like it does righty, his back elbow doesn't fly up in his lefty swing and he doesn't jerk his swing with his front shoulder like he does in his right swing. I am considering having him try and work on his lefty the rest of this season (redshirting freshman year) and spend the whole summer trying to convert to the left side, you think that is possible?

    • @davidollenbittle
      @davidollenbittle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How is this over coaching? Rolling over is a real issue at the plate. This is a simple tool to help with that. The player can take his regular swing repeatedly and receive immediate feedback. This is as simple and easy going as it gets for a baseball swing.

    • @3638765
      @3638765 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you , but tee work is all that’s needed ...a person for feeding balls/ that’s what I’m saying

    • @davidollenbittle
      @davidollenbittle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get that. Tee work is so over looked...and it is vital! But I don't think that the addition of a pool noodle to help a young hitter learn to stay in the hitting zone longer would cause ANY type of negative trait or over coaching. But more than anything, I enjoy being able to have a discussion on the internet without fighting or name calling! One thing about sports...if you are honest about what you think and are respectful to others, you come out on top.

      @baseballtipswithcoachavery9621 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi George. I really like the backspin tee. Its expensive but in a team environment its very durable. We've gone through many tanner tees over the years. I think tanner tees are great because of their portability but when you have a team of players hitting off them everyday they wear down by the end of the year. So far so good with the backspin tee, plus I like the concept it promotes.

    Coach Avery, I have a camera question. How did you mount your camera so there wasn't any obstruction, like a net in front of it to keep your camera (gopro I assume) safe from getting hit? Do you use plexiglass? Thanks!

    • @baseballtipswithcoachavery9621

      Hi Southlake Dragons. The camera is on a tripod about 3 feet high and 1 foot behind an L screen approximately 30ft away. I shoot with a dslr at 50mm. If you set the aperture to an open setting such as F2.8 or F4.0 the netting becomes less visible.

      Hi George. That could work, just make sure to mark the midline at the point of where the front foot lands after the stride. If the chest/sternum is in front of the midline (belt buckle) at the end of the stride they will probably be in a lunged posture.
