Hey Folks,
My name is Sam and this is Monkey Boys Workshop. I am a humble hobbyist woodworker who is now a full time furniture maker working out of our single car garage workshop. On my channel you will see an amalgamation of furniture builds, shop upgrades and maybe some how to and top tip videos. If you’re looking to start or grow your maker business then head on over to my website where you’ll find lots of guides to get your company sky rocketing just like ours 🚀
If you know me through Instagram already then I'm sure you'll know what my content is all about... but if you don't then rest assured, you'll either learn something, be inspired, or laugh (I'll settle for a smile) If you get all three then my job here is done! 🤙🏻
Happy watching you ragamuffins! 🐵

💰 HOW TO CHARGE for your builds & FINISHING the SIDEBOARD
FEBRUARY 2023 - WEEK - I’ve lost count- A question I get asked a lot, like A LOT, over on my Instagram page is “How do I Charge for my furniture pieces?”, and so I thought I’d discuss that in this weeks Insta stories. We also get the white oak sideboard completed, FINALLY, all finished in Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C in ‘Mist’. And I know you’ll ask, where did I get that router bit from, well I’ll leave a link below for it, it’s an affiliate link which just helps me out for being the middle man but you don’t get charged anymore for it, I’d really appreciate the support!
I’ve also linked both Lizzy and Hannah down below who I mentioned in the video, so go check them out and give them your support too, they’re awesome makers.
Hope you enjoyed this mini series of Insta stories and following along this build, let me know if you’d like more!

Obviously if you have a lathe then this will be of no use to you haha But for the rest of you woodworkers out there wanting to up y...

Do you use soundproofing ?
I’ve insulated, plasterboarded and plastered the walls and ceiling (although ceiling has yet to be insulated) which has soundproofed the workshop somewhat. We’ve never had any complaints from neighbours, we’ve actually had orders from them. Most of the noise escapes through the up and over garage doors which I’m hoping to upgrade at some point 🤙🏻
I always smooth out glue so I don't have to scrape off the dried dripping puddles of it off the wood like some kind of troglodyte.
Haha troglodyte, funny word, but you do you mate and what works best for your brain 🤙🏻
Busy researching for my own workshop tour. Nice to take another look around yours. Take care. K.
Cheers mate! I think I need to do a new one soon as it’s been over two years since posting this workshop tour 🙈🤣
bigger than my shop with less tools and/or space to make things.
Congratulations, I’d love to see what you’ve done with your workshop, you made any videos on it?
Lovely.
Thank you so much 😍🤙🏻
This is exactly what I've been trying to design in my head for the underneath of the dining table I'm building which is a long oval. Unreal I found this. Thank you so much for creating this video.
Ah that’s wicked, that detail on an oval table will look wicked. It’s my pleasure, hope the build goes well 🤙🏻
Wow nice shop. It is small or super size machine
Cheers thank you very much ☺️🤙🏻
Ооо, Сэм!!! Здарова мужик))) Куда пропал ? Как ваши дела ?

How did you attach the wooden wing on the left of your table saw?
They’re attached using worktop connecting bolts, just like you’d find in a kitchen counter. There were existing threads in the cast iron top on the table saw so I utilised those, made some holes in the wooden wing and then attached them and it’s very strong, I’ve stood on it many times and it doesn’t budge 🤙🏻
Interesting 🤔
If not 'Pure', what color did you use? I'm guessing Castle Brown, or maybe Chocolate?
Never mind, I just noticed you mention the color is 'Walnut' in the title of this short. D'oh!
Haha I was about to comment on your original message saying it’s in the title 😜😂 Glad you clocked it 🤙🏻
Great video, I think I'll just clone this for my single garage workshop 😂 A question though: How do you heat the shop and at what temp do you keep it in winter? Do temperatures ever drop below zero where you live?
Cheers! Haha go ahead and clone away 😜😂 So I had a radiator installed (I can’t remember if it was installed before or after this video or not, but it’s behind the surface planer (aka jointer). Luckily we had a radiator on the other side of the wall so it was pretty easy to install. The temperatures do drop pretty low, no way near as much as the states mind you but as I’ve insulated the walls as well and so it doesn’t get CRAZY cold in there which is nice 🤙🏻
Unfortunately I liked it better before the stain. What else ya got?
It’s all personal preference at the end of the day 😜 Have you tried Rubio Pure on Walnut, that also looks good 🤙🏻
@@monkeyboysworkshop definitely. I’ve built pieces but loved and hated purely for the “color”. “Oh, I wish it were <x>” has been heard far too much for my liking :) So, I get it. I was just commenting that I wasn’t that huge of a fan of this particular take.
Love it!
Cheers! So did I and more importantly, so did our client 🙌🏻😍

Your positive attitude and encouragement is wonderful. I'm just getting started and these are the videos I look for. Thank you.
Ah thank you so much, that’s exactly what my goal is! Your comment really meant a lot, thank you 😍🤙🏻
Nice, but your audience will appreciate a lessening of the ADD-style editing.
Cheers, I’ll change my entire style of editing just to make you happy ☺️
absolutely agreed

Ah cheers for your comment, I’ll go back and change all the music in every video I’ve done, as well as my taste in music in general 😜👊🏻

You mentioned having the Festool domino xl, would you recommend it over the smaller domino? Thanks
Sweet table saw jig!!!! Do you have build plans?
Didn’t mind sanding butt your music is like really bad video game had sex with 80s porn
How long did you dry the wood for after bending?
I thought dado blades were illegal here in the UK? Hope I am wrong though...........
No they’re not illegal, you just have to have particular table saws that can take a dado stack. Axminster sell one (the table saw I have) as well as the dado stacks to go with them 🤙🏻
How did you cut the remaining off the circle with your band saw?
With a lot of patience haha Just take your time and if you have a second set of hands that does also help but I manage by myself and have built this coffee table countless times now 🤙🏻
@@monkeyboysworkshop wow nice
Absolutely brilliant,,,love all the bits and the bobs
without the weird sanding i loved your video, personally less bad jokes will give you more viewers and subscribers. but your wood craft i realy loved, keep them coming

Sweet build! Love the humor and honesty on the “inevitables”!😮
Thank you so much! Haha and I’m glad you say because that’s exactly what I want you to do, be honest and little funny along the way 😜😂
Do you have plans for these for sale?
I don’t have plans for this side table as of yet but I do have plans coming out for our popular round coffee table coming in a few weeks. It’s on one of my first videos on here 🤙🏻
if thats small, my shop is pobably is a coffin
I just needed it for my project. Thanks.
Awesome! I hope you’re project turned out great 🤙🏻☺️
Great video! How did you lay the under pieces of the circle (the octagon) to cover equal parts of the table?
Cheers! I basically marked out the diameter of the circle underneath and then overlapped the octagon pieces by about 5mm. I’m currently working on build plans for this coffee which will be out in a few weeks 🤙🏻☺️
Thanks so much for sharing. If you had to guess, how much have you spent on tools in total for this shop?
Anytime! I’m not sure I’d like to disclose even a guess as to how much I’ve spent on tools online 🤦🏻♂️😂 Obviously well up in the thousands but that’s been over 15 years of accumulating them throughout my woodworking journey 😜🤙🏻

Another lovely build. Sorry about the thumb - sounds very painful!!! Which drawer sliders do you use in this build?
Lovely build. What do you use for the back panel of the piece?
Cheers! I used 6mm birch ply if I remember correctly, it’s been a while since I built that one 😜🤙🏻
I highly suggest if you build this to use your routers plunge base, not the trim base. This will allow you to return to a set depth if you are doing many shallow passes on different sides of a piece. Also, and this is a big one, add some paste wax to all surfaces that interface with the router. An alternative method I used to build the main plate was to use a board larger than I needed and I set up one of the side walls. I also set up two short side walls. Then I used my plunge base to plunge down with a straight bit to route a channel. Finally the other side wall was attached. Trim the outside of the plate to size with a template bit and bob's your uncle. Never measure when you can reference.
Thanks for your comment! The trim base works really well thanks but yes the plunge would work too. And of course, always put wax on the surfaces 🤙🏻
That's a great idea for the in/out feed of the planer.
May I ask where to find the clear pipe from?
Of course you can ask ☺️ I got it from Axminster here in the UK 🤙🏻
1st one I've seen but an enjoyable video. I'm in the process of selling my Axminster professional scroll saw and looking to purchase an Axminster band saw but,, having seen your video am wondering if I may be better getting a table saw. I don't cut much sheet material so thought the band saw would be better, especially as it takes up less space and my garage is even smaller than yours lol?
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it! Ah sweet, well it all depends on what you build, I don’t have a scroll saw as I don’t have use for it, even though it’ll be nice to have one haha But I definitely use my table saw more than my bandsaw and I don’t work with sheet materials either, the table saw is super handy and that’s also why I now don’t have a mitre saw because I use the table saw instead. So at the end of the day it’s up to you due to what you build which dictates what tools you think would be necessary ☺️🤙🏻
whats the overall footprint?
It’s around 180 sq feet I believe 🤙🏻
How did you quantify the angles for crosscuts on the legs? If wanting to adjust height or width?
It was quite simply trial and error, I’m no mathematician that’s for sure 😂 so I try and go by eye and use the least amount of maths as possible 🤙🏻
a lot of your videos are removed...why ?
Excellent tool for converting a thicknesser into a planer.
@@AaronGeller Oh yeah definitely, I’m just trying to find the time right now 🙈😂
Great jig. I just made one today. To do radius corners would the angled pieces be placed on a sharper angle?
Sam, how's things? Hope you're all doing good. It's been a while (3months +) since we last got a uploading from yourselves 🤔, don't tell me that the yummy mummy (katie) is keeping you too busy along with little Riley needing plenty of nappy changes and that's why we haven't seen anything for the past few months 🤪. Hopefully you're all good and about to be uploading another video shortly 🤔. As always guy's 💯% 👍.
Haha it has been a while indeed! Longer than I’d planned but I’m hoping to posting more videos soon once we’ve completed a few more jobs in the workshop and life stuff 🤦🏻♂️😂 Baby Riley is definitely keeping us both busy, busier than we’d expected haha So bare with me and I’ll soon be posting videos on a regular basis as that’s what I want too. We’re all good though thanks, much appreciated 😜☺️
Excellent presentation.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it 🤙🏻
