Very nice workshop. Not sure about England, but here in Scotland I was told when I converted my single garage to a workshop that I wasn't allowed to put in 'fixed' heating otherwise it would be deemed a 'room' which wasn't granted for in the plans. To make it a 'room' would have required full planning and for it to have more than a layer of kingspan and plasterboard to insulate it. Mobile/portable heating is allowed.
Thank you very much! To be fair I didn’t check haha but knew it was okay to install as I converted a friends garage a few years previously in to a room for their eldest son for when he was back from uni. In England you don’t need planning permission to change the garage in to a room, as long as the works are internal and there’s no change externally then you can do what you want basically. It’s a shame you have to get planning, portable heaters are expensive to run 🙈
@@iainmatheson5190 Unfortunately, you have to tell your housing insurance company/mortgage lender if you've converted a room because it affects the value of your property, otherwise your insurance is void, so you are forced to get an evaluation estimate done, which is then recorded. The local council can regularly check the current estimated valuation of your property and see if you are paying less tax than you should.
Cheers! Haha oh you have you to be tidy in a small don’t you, otherwise you wouldn’t get anything done other than tidy up every time before even starting anything 😝😂

Sam, your thicknesser jig that you show made from MDF, is it treated ? Varnished or waxed. I’m currently making a bench for my thicknesser that I mentioned to you on Instagram and not sure if to go with white melamine shelving or MDF like yours for the top surface.
Hi Terry! Yes, I coat with a layer of wax every now and again which works really well but I am hoping to make a new version soon and was planning to make the top out of a melamine faced plywood. You’d obviously still have to wax it but I guess the melamine version would be a little more durable 👊🏻
Hello mate! Cheers glad you like my content and business, appreciate it! I plan on making some jig videos soon, so stay tuned for when they come out 🤙🏻
Great video, I think I'll just clone this for my single garage workshop 😂 A question though: How do you heat the shop and at what temp do you keep it in winter? Do temperatures ever drop below zero where you live?
Cheers! Haha go ahead and clone away 😜😂 So I had a radiator installed (I can’t remember if it was installed before or after this video or not, but it’s behind the surface planer (aka jointer). Luckily we had a radiator on the other side of the wall so it was pretty easy to install. The temperatures do drop pretty low, no way near as much as the states mind you but as I’ve insulated the walls as well and so it doesn’t get CRAZY cold in there which is nice 🤙🏻
1st one I've seen but an enjoyable video. I'm in the process of selling my Axminster professional scroll saw and looking to purchase an Axminster band saw but,, having seen your video am wondering if I may be better getting a table saw. I don't cut much sheet material so thought the band saw would be better, especially as it takes up less space and my garage is even smaller than yours lol?
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it! Ah sweet, well it all depends on what you build, I don’t have a scroll saw as I don’t have use for it, even though it’ll be nice to have one haha But I definitely use my table saw more than my bandsaw and I don’t work with sheet materials either, the table saw is super handy and that’s also why I now don’t have a mitre saw because I use the table saw instead. So at the end of the day it’s up to you due to what you build which dictates what tools you think would be necessary ☺️🤙🏻
Cheers Robert, glad you enjoyed it, I need to do a new one soon as it’s nearly a year old 🙈 I have the Axminster AT254LTS, thanks for letting me know the link doesn’t work, I’ll update it 🤙🏻 To be fair I think they have changed the name of it. It’s a great saw, no complaints from me what so ever ☺️
Keeping your nice sander by the workbench implies you use it a lot.... Why not make a wooden sander holder to the wide of your workbench? Thanks for your videos.
That’s exactly what I’ve been planning on doing for a while now but haven’t had the time to just do it, even though it’ll be a very quick job 🙈😂 No thank you for watching my videos 🤙🏻🐵
I do have and I would recommend it over the smaller one indeed, purely because you can get an adaptor (which I now have) that allows you to make all the cuts the smaller domino can do. Where as you can’t do it the other way around I believe. 🤙🏻
Nice! Did you get build regulation approved for electrical and insulation, ventilation and heating systems? If so, how to do it and where do I go with it? Thanks ☺️
Thanks mate! From my knowledge you don’t need permission as you’re not changing anything externally or turning the garage in to residence such as a bedroom etc So you can do whatever you want within reason 😜 My brother in law is a town planner here in the UK so he knows the rules and regulations 🤙🏻
@@monkeyboysworkshop I done a bit of research and found that you don't need planning permissions when doing internal changes , but you have to have a building regulations approval, everytime you mess with electricity or central heating, insulation and many other things. Check: "planning portal"
@@calmdymon Cheers buddy, I’ll check that out. The regulations may differ depending on where you are in the UK and my brother in law hasn’t mentioned anything about that for where we live but thanks dude 🤙🏻
Ah thank you very much, so kind! No of course I don’t mind, we source it from a variety of places, sometimes Surrey Timbers, sometimes Joe at The Rustic Tree Company (you’ll find him on Instagram, he’s our slab guy and he’s wicked) and then if none of that works, we scroll through eBay 🙈😂
Cheers mate! Yeah nothing fancy, just a run of 13amp sockets and then I have two 16amp sockets ready for any bigger tool changes I may make in future ☺️🤙🏻

love your small shop! Question: What size dovetail bit did you use for your track clamps on that sled? I just got a bunch of track clamps and that's a dandy little idea you have there. I miss that makita planer (thicknesser). I loved it when I owned it.
Cheers dude! Ooo that is a good question and I can’t remember for the life of me what size bit it was, when I get in the workshop I’ll dig it out and let you know. But yeah it’s a great little jig ☺️ It’s a great thicknesser isn’t it (I know you guys call it a planer 😜)
Hey dude, just got in the workshop, I used a half inch dovetail bit but I remember having to shift it over a touch on each cut to make it slightly wider. Hope that helps mate 🤙🏻
@@monkeyboysworkshop Awesome, I think I have one, and I should give that jig a try. I whole-heartedly agree that the english nomenclature for jointer = planer and planer = thicknesser makes so much more sense than the american versions.
@@ScottWalshWoodworking Great, let me know how you get on with it, I’ve used mine on pretty much every project since making it. Yeah I’m afraid to say I have to agree, much more logical, which is rare for us English folk 😜😂
Hi Monkey Boy, love you vlogs, some real nice pieces of furniture. I have a new white oak handrail for my next project and an engineered oak floor which I’m going to sand back. I’ve done a test patch out of site and it’s not far of the colour of the handrail, my question to you is two fold. 1) What Rubio colour would you recommend? and 2) can Rubio be used on an engineered oak floor? Thx Jay
Hey buddy! Thank you so much, glad you like my videos 🤙🏻 Awesome, I do love me some white oak 🤤 Colour wise is totally up to you, but for a natural look we tend to use Rubio ‘Mist’, and then sometimes ‘Smoke 5%’. The colour ‘Pure’ (which is their natural colour, so don’t get confused between their actual ‘Natural’ colour sample 🙈😂) tends to make oak very warm. And you can definitely use it on floors as it was actually made for floors in the first place. Hope that helps dude 👊🏻
Ah see I did something I probably shouldn’t scream about but I inserted a washer on to the NVR on switch so essentially it stays permanently on. I hadn’t foreseen this when buying my collector and it was my only solution at the time, 2 years later and it’s been okay so far 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you very much! Personally I prefer parallel clamps, I have both Axminster brand and Bessey brand which are good quality clamps and I’d definitely recommend those. I’ve also heard Pony Jorgensen are good clamps too but I haven’t tried them personally 🤙🏻
They’re attached using worktop connecting bolts, just like you’d find in a kitchen counter. There were existing threads in the cast iron top on the table saw so I utilised those, made some holes in the wooden wing and then attached them and it’s very strong, I’ve stood on it many times and it doesn’t budge 🤙🏻
I really enjoyed this, some great ideas. Did you have to earth the dust collection pipes? Subscribed and looking forward to more videos - will also check you out on IG 🤙
Thanks Barrie, glad you enjoyed it! I haven’t earthed them no and I don’t think I need to to be honest especially after speaking to some electricians ☺️ Thanks for subscribing, it really means a lot and I’ll see you over on IG 🤙🏻
I’ve insulated, plasterboarded and plastered the walls and ceiling (although ceiling has yet to be insulated) which has soundproofed the workshop somewhat. We’ve never had any complaints from neighbours, we’ve actually had orders from them. Most of the noise escapes through the up and over garage doors which I’m hoping to upgrade at some point 🤙🏻
Just curious how you deal with the noise factor. I'm going to assume you are close to your neighbours, do you get complaints about the noise of the machines?
Yes we are very close to neighbours but we’ve actually been really lucky where we are. The neighbours have never complained, we actually get a lot of interest in what we’re doing and we’ve also had orders from neighbours too haha I think insulating the walls was a good shout as it does reduce the sound but there is still more that can be done to help reduce it even more, like an insulated garage door and ceiling too 🤙🏻
No they’re not illegal, you just have to have particular table saws that can take a dado stack. Axminster sell one (the table saw I have) as well as the dado stacks to go with them 🤙🏻
Hey buddy! Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply, I’ve been on holiday and wanted to give you exact measurements once I got back to the workshop ☺️🤙🏻 So the cast iron section is 550mm, with the add on supplied (the white part top) it goes to 1125mm, but the bar goes to 1336mm (as in from pushed up against the wall on the right all the way to left of the cast iron top! Hope that helps mate 🤙🏻
Well I’m lucky for sure! This is the biggest shop I’ve had so far, my first was about a fifth of this size if that, so I know what you’re working with 🤙🏻

@@monkeyboysworkshop il give that way of attaching it a go next time then. cheers again
Hi
Love your videos and how you’ve build a business from your hobby I would love to see a video on how you use your jig
Hello mate! Cheers glad you like my content and business, appreciate it! I plan on making some jig videos soon, so stay tuned for when they come out 🤙🏻
Great video, I think I'll just clone this for my single garage workshop 😂 A question though:
How do you heat the shop and at what temp do you keep it in winter? Do temperatures ever drop below zero where you live?
Cheers! Haha go ahead and clone away 😜😂
So I had a radiator installed (I can’t remember if it was installed before or after this video or not, but it’s behind the surface planer (aka jointer). Luckily we had a radiator on the other side of the wall so it was pretty easy to install. The temperatures do drop pretty low, no way near as much as the states mind you but as I’ve insulated the walls as well and so it doesn’t get CRAZY cold in there which is nice 🤙🏻
Loving the videos Sam keep em coming
Ah cheers dude! When’s your next one coming out, I loved your first one 👊🏻
@@monkeyboysworkshop I’m starting filming today !!!!!!
@@SteveBellCreates Woohoo! Can’t wait to see the next instalment 👊🏻
Great video! Which table saw do you have? (The link didn't work). I'm trying to work out if I can upgrade......
You mentioned having the Festool domino xl, would you recommend it over the smaller domino? Thanks
Really good channel very NICE shop. where do you get your wood and sheet good from if you dont mind saying
@@monkeyboysworkshop 😊 thanks very much
Top darts video - what's your electrical setup - standard or anything fancy?
Cheers mate! Yeah nothing fancy, just a run of 13amp sockets and then I have two 16amp sockets ready for any bigger tool changes I may make in future ☺️🤙🏻
Hi bud,
Are you doing a film on how to make the table top sledge.
Hey mate! Table top sledge, which do you mean? 🤔
@@monkeyboysworkshop table saw sledge.
@@jonathannewby2720 Ah I see! I do want to do a video on that, it’s just tricky coz I’ve already made it, and to show how I’ve built it I’d have to make another one so I’ll end up with two 🤔😂 But leave it with me 😜🤙🏻
love your small shop!
But yeah it’s a great little jig ☺️
It’s a great thicknesser isn’t it (I know you guys call it a planer 😜)
Do you still use your biscuit joiner after purchasing the Domino?
I do mate, it always comes in handy. Obviously I don’t use it as much haha But like I said it comes handy 🤙🏻
@@monkeyboysworkshop great thx for your help, il look take a look 👀👍🏻
@@sxworkshop No worries at all, happy to help where I can 🤙🏻
Hi
How did you overcome the problem of fitting a remote switch for your dust collection which has a NVR switch on the machine.
Hi very nice workshop would you be able to recommend any clamps
Thank you very much! Personally I prefer parallel clamps, I have both Axminster brand and Bessey brand which are good quality clamps and I’d definitely recommend those. I’ve also heard Pony Jorgensen are good clamps too but I haven’t tried them personally 🤙🏻
@@monkeyboysworkshop great much appreciated
@@Steve-dr7rr Anytime mate 🐵
I liked the brick...
Well it’s all gone now I’m afraid mate 🤙🏻
Wow nice shop. It is small or super size machine
Cheers thank you very much ☺️🤙🏻
Just discovered your channel - this looks fun! Have a sub :)
Ah cheers dude, that’s very kind of ya 🤙🏻 It’ll always be fun on my channel mate ☺️😜
How did you attach the wooden wing on the left of your table saw?
They’re attached using worktop connecting bolts, just like you’d find in a kitchen counter. There were existing threads in the cast iron top on the table saw so I utilised those, made some holes in the wooden wing and then attached them and it’s very strong, I’ve stood on it many times and it doesn’t budge 🤙🏻
Interesting 🤔
I really enjoyed this, some great ideas. Did you have to earth the dust collection pipes?
Subscribed and looking forward to more videos - will also check you out on IG 🤙
Thanks Barrie, glad you enjoyed it! I haven’t earthed them no and I don’t think I need to to be honest especially after speaking to some electricians ☺️ Thanks for subscribing, it really means a lot and I’ll see you over on IG 🤙🏻
Do you use soundproofing ?
I’ve insulated, plasterboarded and plastered the walls and ceiling (although ceiling has yet to be insulated) which has soundproofed the workshop somewhat. We’ve never had any complaints from neighbours, we’ve actually had orders from them. Most of the noise escapes through the up and over garage doors which I’m hoping to upgrade at some point 🤙🏻
May I ask where to find the clear pipe from?
Of course you can ask ☺️ I got it from Axminster here in the UK 🤙🏻
Just curious how you deal with the noise factor. I'm going to assume you are close to your neighbours, do you get complaints about the noise of the machines?
Yes we are very close to neighbours but we’ve actually been really lucky where we are. The neighbours have never complained, we actually get a lot of interest in what we’re doing and we’ve also had orders from neighbours too haha I think insulating the walls was a good shout as it does reduce the sound but there is still more that can be done to help reduce it even more, like an insulated garage door and ceiling too 🤙🏻
For door isolation, I'm use hanging two old carpet. Working 👌
I thought dado blades were illegal here in the UK?
Hope I am wrong though...........
No they’re not illegal, you just have to have particular table saws that can take a dado stack. Axminster sell one (the table saw I have) as well as the dado stacks to go with them 🤙🏻
What pipes and fittings do you use for your dust ducts
I use the dust pipes and fixings from Axminster Tools, great shop and they deliver fast 🤙🏻
@@monkeyboysworkshop thx

Oh really, this is the first I’ve heard of it, I’ll look in to it, thanks for letting me know 🤙🏻
@@monkeyboysworkshop It's only on the first section and the last section of the video.
What is width of the table saw, from side to side not including you add on
