Maui Jim Haleakala Sunglass Review (with On-Water Testing)
Up in Michigan, I am sure that would be considered cheap. Down where I live, that is not the case. A $184.00 fly reel and a $1,000.00 or more rod, that is way out of reach around here for most. I am into Tenkara rods right now and tying Kebari Flies. It would be nice if you could do a review on Tenkara rods and tie a few flies with the forward-facing hackle. Beautiful flies and a pleasure to tie. I believe you would reach a lot of people that are interested in Tenkara fishing, and fly tying, and it is more affordable. If you are a trout fishing, dry fly, purest, then totally disregard everything I have written, delete it, and block my name from the site for suggesting such blasphemy, and should you speak my name, spit afterwards to remove it completely from your mouth. Really enjoy your channel and the hard work you put into it. Thanks for making these great instructional, and entertaining videos.
I hear what your saying, I guess it's relative. A good machined fly reel in the US is in the $300 range. Luckily I built my fly rod for a fraction of the cost of new. I've played with the idea of swinging a Tenkara it seems like a nice fit for smooth skinny creeks I like to fish. Catch you later!! 🐟
Thank you sir
Glad it helped. 🐟🐟
I could not find the the guide spacing charts. When I open the link I just got a narrative basically of this video.
Link goes to an article, halfway down the article is a spot asking for your email so the charts can be sent to you. I hope that helps. Tight lines and good luck with your rod building project.🐟😎🎣

Great video. I was leaning in both directions between the Costa and Maui Jim, after your video, I'm convinced on the Maui Jim in Bronze. Another angler in the eye doctors office also recommended the bronze Maui Jim sunglasses. Great video, keep it up.
I'm probably going to buy the Mangroves style.
Thanks, Maui Jim makes great lenses, plus I think the fit and style are top notch. Tight lines 😎

You want the most contrast while still keeping a full spectrum of colors. Maui jim does the absolute best at this with their polarized plus technology. The entire colors spectrum is just enhanced. Any and everything with colors just pops, while staying that same color. Their glare reduction is top of the list as well. Smiths chromopop does a good job at boosting colors however it really only seems to boost the base colors of red, blue, yellow. When the colors mix to make say green or purple then the colors loose a little saturation. Bajios appear to use more of the costa mind set with a heavy colored base lens with a mirrored finish. They do allow more colors in than the costas however the heavy colored base lens is more restrictive on the color spectrum of light allowed through the lens than the prior two which run more neutral base lenses. Costas green lenses block ALOT of the color spectrum making it hard to look into shadows and differentiate between shades of green.
Wow, thanks for all the information. I've been playing with some Bajio's for a while now. I'm still undecided with them. Maui Jim's lenses are great. In higher end sunnies, individual preferences really play a big factor. On a recent fishing trip myself, a buddy and a guide tried on 9 different sunglasses and came away with different favorites. Tight lines 😎😎🐟
do you know of any with a bifocal lense?
The Fishoholic have a nice tint. th-cam.com/video/3ap51_1cwmE/w-d-xo.html
@@GuideRecommended yes I see that , perfect but not what I was looking for . I am looking for the added bifocal for older eyes
Just getting back into Fly fishing and this really helped, thank you
Glad it helped! Tight lines 🐟
I am surprised to not see a single pair of Sunclouds on this list. Have you ever tested them?
Never tried the Sunclouds
Also, wearing another pair of socks OVER your booties extends their life.
Interesting 🤔 I'll have to try that. Tight lines 🐟
😂😂
👍
Entire family fishes and we all used to wear costas. But I switched to maui jims and the rest of them moved to smiths. Both maui and smiths in my opinion have better clarity as well as polarization than costa. Ill still give the edge to maui over smith if your looking for the absolute best optics.
Great information, something that jumps out is that you understand that premium sunglasses do offer better performance. So many folks don't understand that. I'm playing with some Smith Hooksets currently and really like them. Tight lines 🐟
This is the UNI knot. The "Duncan Loop/Knot" puts a loop in the STANDING part of the line just before the eye, then the tag is passed thru and then wrapped around. Adjust to the size you want. The loop binds on the wraps therefore locking whatever size loop you made, in place. The "Uni Knot" puts a loop in the TAG/WORKING end AFTER you pass thru the eye then you wrap as before. You have made a barrel knot on the TAG end or "back on itself" thereby allowing the now formed loop to slide on the WORKING end. Similar construction - different results.
Great information 😄. I'll have to try that out. Tight lines 🐟
@@GuideRecommended If I'm wrong, I'll own it. I might be looking at a new knot. I've burned thru abut 10 feet of old fly line working on it! haha

It’s me Nolan Borg
Hello Nolan 🐟🐟
@@GuideRecommendedThankyou for helping me start fly tying
I’m looking for polarized sunglasses for fishing that fit over my prescription glasses, any recommendations?
I had some cocoon brand in the past. They did okay. Years ago, I just decided to bite the bullet and get RX sunglasses that work for fishing and everyday wear. Tight lines 😎😎
First off, let's be clear here, you do NOT have a fat head. I know what of I speak because I have a fat head or a super thick skull or both. Trust me when I tell you that your head is not fat. The problem with glass lens is the weight, and the cost. Today, plastic lens are equal to glass without the weight and high cost. I wear trifocals and if my glasses had glass lens, they would look almost like the bottom of coke bottles and weight a ton. Of course, it is a personal thing. It is very important to be styling and profiling for those trout. They are not going to waste time on a pair of cheap sunglasses. Really do enjoy your channel. Thanks for going to all of the trouble and expense to make these great videos.
Thanks for the comment. Sunglasses are a personal preference thing. Glass vs plastic, grey vs bronze tint. The Tuna Alley's aren't my favorite, but they are a great pair of sunglasses. Tight lines 😎😎😎🐟
Can u show us the testing device u use for uva uvb testing?
I use a UV light and a test card.😎😎

Thank you for not talking for 20 minutes and getting to the point....i appreciate the clearly defined segments too
Glad it was helpful! 😎😎
Seems it depends on lens color choice and between the two you chose I would pick the Maui Jims.
The Maui Jim's are nice.
I don`t know, David. I really like the more natural view of the water through the Maui Jim Sunglasses, without that terrible reddish hue from the CDM Fantail. But, like you say, it is personal preference. I have never been a fan of seeing the world, tinted. I want it to look as natural as is possible and from your previous review, Maui Jim would be my choice. Thanks for these reviews, fly tying tutorials, rod building, fly fishing products, and so forth. I have no doubt your channel will continue to grow, just hang in there and don`t give up.
I agree with you about the tint color. I prefer the bronze color tints, but the fantails are great at seeing fish. Thanks for the comment - catch you later 🐟
Bajio

I love you videos they are awesome! The only problem is the audio part. Your video is sometimes hard to hear. I just thought I’d let you know. I thoroughly enjoy your videos except sometimes I can’t make up what you say!
Thanks for the note, I'm always trying to get better.
Hello, David. It is good to see you out and about fishing. Mornings and evenings, the wind usually dies down, and the water is slick. I really enjoy fly fishing for Bluegill because they taste so good, and are about the only freshwater fish I eat besides crappie, and maybe catfish that are caught in the winter months. You should fish for whatever you want to, it doesn`t have to be trout all of the time. As always, I really enjoy your channel and videos. Thank you for going to the trouble of making them, they are greatly appreciated.
I appreciate the comment! You're exactly right about the time of day. Tight lines! 🎣🎣🎣
Have you tried on the frogs toggs deep current wading boot I see it’s a new product out there
Thanks for the comment. No I haven't tried those. Tight lines
YakYak ... tie the fly !
Completely agree 💯👍
Fingernail polish remover has acetone and would make a good thinner plus it will unstick super glue should you accidentally glue unintended objects such as your fingertips to flies, etc....
Great suggestion - Thanks 👍
Excellent video.
$98765
$4321 🎣🐟
Never had any kind of of glasses like this aways wanted but I can’t push my self to put that kinda money out there
There are some pretty good budget sunnies, check out my other video.
Dump the bag! Dump bag! I want to know what a Guide Recommended crap load of stuff to carry, looks like. Also, go over every piece and tell why you believe it is necessary to carry it. Thanks for making these absolutely fantastic videos. I always pick up useful information in each one.
Noted! I'll try to get it done.
Thank you, David!
My pleasure! 🐟🐟
Audio is terrible
Absolutely 👍🐟 tight lines
Trim the legs.
Long legs🐟🐟🐟👍
Thanks for taking time to break all that down, just can’t bring myself to spend that kind of money on sunglasses
I appreciate the note. Tight lines 🐟🐟🐟
little bit different, but great looking flies
Thanks 👍 🐟🐟
Thank you! This is the type of reviews im looking for. No bs, informative with comparison and testing.
Glad it was helpful! 🐟🐟
I whas think that you gonna go for smith for some kind sponsorship but great nice video man smith looks very good but I m fishing with costa for 10 years and none one scratch and amazing vizibilit
I like both the Smiths and Costa's The Costa's work great in harsh sun and the Smith's are good for low light conditions. 🐟🐟😎😎
In terms of looks, are both of these sunglasses the same dimensions, shape and fit? I like the Costa Fantails but I prefer the Local Kine lense color options.
The lenses on the Maui Jim Local Kines are awesome! 😎😎🐟🐟
Great video!! My wife and I want to start fishing the Pigeon River in TN. There's a lot of slick rocks but also a bit of hiking is involved. Just how much more traction on slick rocks will I get with the Eddy felts vs rubber. I prefer rubber but don't want to regret it because they're too slick. Also, I plan to use a neoprene wet suit pants and vest in mild weather with waterproof socks and put the wetsuit pants leg over the top of the sock and then the Eddy wading shoes. Do you see this as a decent plan?
To be absolutely honest, I wouldn't fish in those mountain streams without felt boots. The Simm's Flyweight felt are outstanding for lots of hiking plus fishing, but they are going to cost a lot more ($100+) than the Deep Eddy's.
@@GuideRecommended thanks.. the cleats are not ok in those rivers? I only ask because I now have a pair, but haven't used them yet
This was a lot of work, much thanks!
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it useful.😎😎😎
Great video thanks for the work
You bet. 😎🐟
Great video! Which lense color gives the clearest view and avoids turning everything to a purple reddish tint ?
I personally like the bronze color tint. I fish mostly in the morning and afternoon, and bronze/browns give good contrast. Grey tint is good for intense sun in the mid-day.
green mirrors give a pinkish tint no matter what the brand is.
