Mannnn thanks for the detailed vid, so much help 🙏
Once a ISBN is assigned, can you make corrections? Changes? (Some things, not others( Can you come back to add/change things like book weight? Active status? Price? after publication? (Can't get book weight from Ingram until after printing, but then it's too late?) Once a book has been published/printed by KDP/B&N/etc, what is the process for unpublishing and republishing with (wide) distributors? Why do you need to buy a barcode? Why does buying ISBN provide more "freedom" or "control"? Wish you could have demonstrated with an actual unpublished book to go through all the steps.
Uh...just what is the comment your vine is making and who wrote that? So weird yet amusing, I just had to ask.
Thankyou for the video. very helpfull
I struggle to find a really good writing tool because I am mainly a non-fiction author. The newer Author program which is inexpensive, not free but cheap, on the Apple Store is headed in the right direction, but the bibliography and referencing is more clunky than advertised. The best for this genre is actually the most complicated of all to use - which is to download the whole of the TeX/LaTeX system and a couple of programs that utilise this - my recommendation would be LyX in this case. It's available on all platforms, but easiest to install on Linux. It works fine on both Windows and Mac, but there's just more components needed to be downloaded and installed. I would say that LyX is the best to work with for non fiction, but there's a hell of a learning curve! You really need to know more about LaTeX and so would benefit from buying one of the many textbooks on this subject. Many things are governed by document type, paragraph type, and the plugin program called BibTeX. Honestly, if you don't have at least 6 months to give yourself before beginning a project to educate yourself to this system and its terminology, then it really isn't for you. But if you are a serious non-fiction author, it is genuinely worthwhile to educate yourself on this as it really is the most powerful system. But to get at least 50% of the same non-fiction functionality elsewhere? It's just not there, sadly. You need to compromise by using a suite of different programs to create the different bits that you need to put together. And then, for final formatting, even programs like Vellum struggle - and that one's free for doing your writing, but as soon as you want to format and export you need to pay a relatively large amount. So... This is where InDesign (monthly sub way too expensive) or, maybe preferably, Affinity Publisher (one off payment, only pay again when there is a completely new version released and you can judge first whether this is good for you or to wait for a further major release before updating. Minor updates are all free). There's no free that is quite as good, although Scribus is getting there and may be worth experimenting with. It has a helpful community and is regularly updated. You can choose to get every update, and put up with some instability, or only the major updates for less problems. I think the aim of the programmers on the project can, eventually, give the best DTP, but as with all such projects the progress is slow and more as a result of student programmers using some of their time to add to the project while doing their courses. So... this is the puzzling position I find myself in as a non-fiction author.
Another great video. One other thing to add to the author website is the ability to collect names and email addresses. These email addresses allow you to send emails about your new releases directly to your fans.
Thank you for the details on what can and can not be changed without needing to use a new ISBN. Keep up the good work!!
Thank you! Great video. Do you have one that covers what can be edited and what absolutely can not be changed?
Very helpful information. Thank you!
Thanks for the great video. If I leave the "imprint name" field blank as you did in the video, what will it show on Amazon instead of "independently published"? Will it just be blank? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for this video. I just bought my first ISBN!
First off, thanks for taking the time to put this information up! A good set of instructions and info. I have a question on the publish date info. I already have the eBook, PB & HB formats out. They have been 'on the shelves' for a few months. I'm setting up to publish the book in the audiobook format. Should I use the original publishing date of the book for general sale in multi-format or assign a new publishing date to the audiobook format? Thanks in advance!
Solid video. I think I'll stick with yWriter. I've used it years ago when I was working on a novel; now I'm actually going to use it on a short story, because (I think) "long COVID" has given me ADHD in my 60s and it's really hard for me to focus at length and hold onto a lot of details. I need help keeping things organized, and once I get the software down, I think yWriter will be a big help.
Reedsy is awful. They charge you for people who say they'll do a ZOOm and then don't want to be seen, give you bad advice and then they charge you for them and won't return money. I spent A LOT of money with these people and they didn't even acknowledge that a good customer had a problem with one of their so-called experts.
Great video and very clear. For me, I want to control the ISBN for consistency in case I change printers or distribution methods. Not sure that’s any big deal or not, however! Also, I wonder who, if anyone, uses the extra info. Do booksellers and libraries read this info somehow when they are looking for books to buy?
Talk about interesting species! Read Lem's Star Diaries and Stapledon's Star Maker. Very different from each other, but classic and unique. Stapledon cautioned against technology. Whereas, Lem really embraced it. But be predared to laugh and cry in equal measure.
thanks SO much. I could not figure out how to get started but this made it easy. I bought my own b/c I wanted more freedom to take the book elsewhere and not get locked in to KDP and be able to port over to IngramSpark more easily. I only bought one b/c this is my first book and not sure how many more I will write. I also bought a bar code at same time but need to figure that out too; should be easier now that you showed us the ISBN assignment.
Would one be able to make changes to title of the book after being issued an LCCN? Would you have to reapply for a new LCCN if there are any changes ( large or small) in the title? Thanks! This is very helpful information
I just found you and subscribed , Question: How do send my ISBN to the printer. (I have wrinten a children book, a college is going to print.). A student has illustrated and made the cover. Now on Bowker I have an ISBN and Bar code. Bowker has created both but I need to know how do I send them to the college ? Aloha
As a general rule, you need to email the barcode and ISBN to the person that is creating the book or, at least, formatting the book. They will incorporate the ISBN onto your copyright page and the barcode on to the back cover..
I believe Ingram Spark encourages authors to discount their book so that more booksellers are likely to pick it up. So if you discount the book with Ingram Spark, but choose a higher sales price on KDP, then which retail price do you put in the Bowker template?
I heard someone give an alternative to the phrase as 'Describe, don't explain.' Essentially saying 'Bob was a rude, overbearing man.' is just a bad idea, but saying 'Bob would butt into any conversation he had an opinion on. He'd cut people off mid-sentence and always needed to have the last-loudest-word.' is more engaging when you need to tell. The first bit is telling with no substance, but the second bit is telling with subtext. A character is being described, and it's up to the reader to infer: they're not being told he's a dick, even though they are, but they feel like they've come to that conclusion on their own. Hell, some people might think Bob is right to do those things. It can get a little more complicated depending on the story's perspective, since first-person will tend towards explicit storytelling in most cases. But the general idea is, I feel, good advice.
Nortantis isn't free now.
Is it possible you're thinking of a different map making program? Nortantis is still free.
Thanks for sharing very useful
Thank you. I cannot say that enough. It is immediately clear when an experienced writer is discussing the qualities & characteristics of a writing tool vs someone who is just reviewing the software. You make sense and that shows your experience. It seems like you & I write very similarly (in terms of process) so you have helped me very much here. Again, thank you.
I love your analysis,it shortened the time i would have used to surf through tons of videos to get the information I need on this topic. Thanks
This is so helpful!

Thanks for the video! Speaking about series and trilogies, I cant figure out if the one I'm writing is a series or a two-set trilogy. The main theme is set on reflection and setting out on a quest to gather specific items. So much to pinder about.
