Building the "Charlie Christian" amp - Gibson EH-185/ EH-150
มุมมอง 7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This amp was built to answer the question "What would it be like to play through jazz legend Charlie Christian's amp?" Well, you could acquire a vintage Gibson EH-150 or EH-185, or pay a large sum of money for a boutique clone, but down under in Australia, those are not easy options. My response was to assemble parts that were as similar to the originals as possible (and affordable), and lock m...

Building a 1970 Fender Musicmaster clone
มุมมอง 2.7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The 1970 Musicmaster Bass amp is a relatively unloved member of the Fender family, but it has some interesting features, so I decided to build one. Apparently these silverface-era amps are relatively affordable in the USofA, but here in Australia they are not often seen. Another reason to make my own. The following links take you to the original Fender schematic, and to the modified schematic I...

Wow, clean lil gem there... Looks identical to my 72 JMP 50 W. Great tip on the IEC socket, Im ordering one now. Mine currently has a standard IEC socket which leaves air gaps around the socket. Not exactly UL approved...Thx again!
I am picking one of these tweed ones up tomorrow. I am looking forward to it. The harmonica sounds incredible from this amp! I sure wish it was a tube, but it looks so cool, I will deal with it!
Great job! I'm doing the same thing to my Blues deluxe! I'm using Robrob's drive circuit and raw switch. Possibly the NFB as well. If i may ask, how did you switch the drive circuit?
Glad I found this video! I picked up a Blues Deluxe first gen which I managed to revive but I want to convert it to a Super Reverb circuit with the 1x12. Nice to see it's been done before!!
Bassman Deluxe 1x12❤
Check out 3rd Millennium Audio in the US (also on YT) for great MX 5 dedicated speakers, plug-and-play, great instructions. Sound quality unsurpassed!
Apparently you had the Fender reissue reverb in the locked position for transport. Don't know if it was on purpose or just plain ignorance, but it doesn't do justice for the Weber if the test was disingenuous.
Great idea and great job!
Hi Mark. Do you build and sell these?
@@jeffbroughton231 No. I have lots of other projects waiting. This amp is now owned, and regularly gigged by my guitar buddy Mike Frost.
Nice build ! I like the tweed cab. I've done a deville 4x10 ( bassamn/plexi) and hr deluxe ( jmp/jcm) Robs pages are an amazing source of info. I added a type 2 Lar Mar master as well as a type 3 on each build. I added the pentode triode switch as well, using a 3-way switch with standby in the middle. On my hr deluxe, I put the cascade on a switch and used only one input. And i added a switchable preamp tube circuit. I can use 12ax7s or 6n2p-ev soviet tubes. Next bassamn that i do will probably have a raw swutch added. If you ever do a deville exprect it to be insanely loud even with a lar mar ppimv!
Choke is the main one obviously, but I was perfectly happy just putting an extra 22uf on the power stage filter.
you destroyed this amp
I always muse on Marshall's model numbering system and wonder what the hell they were thinking. Indeed One would be hard pressed to come up with a more confusing model designation system if they tried to. The decision to give the different versions seemingly random 4 digit model numbers that begin with the number 19 was a master stroke in ambiguity. "Is that a 1987 or 1986?" "Oh no its a 1959 made in 1969"! And the most famous Marshall? The plexi of course, wasn't an actual model but a nickname. Lol. "Is that a plexi?" "Well its a 1959 but its from 1971 so its not really a plexi but its the same circuit!"
Hahaha. Yeah, my thoughts exactly.
I love the 6n2p. I've used them in a couple builds. You can wure the amp in such a way that you can wire a switch and choose whether to use a 12ax7 or the 6n2p.
Does it hum when the chassis is out of the amplifier
Hard to tell from the vid but it appears you have some inductive coupling going on between the windings of the P.T. and O.P. transformers. The bobbins need to be at 90 degrees to each other and not with the same orientation as you appear to have them.
Great work ! I know very little about amps and would electrocute myself if I tried to tinker with them, ha ha ! (Don't know why I'm laughing !!). I do have a MA-17 amp and I've just taken it to an amp tech to work on (it's already had some work done to it in the past but it has issues, including microphonic rattle, or something. Rather than removing the cool pilot light, do you think there would be plenty room to install the two jack input sockets on the SIDE of the amp chassis (left side) ? I assume the original circuit had a different signal path for the mic & phono channels - but what did you do to the phono channel, for the 2nd input ? Any changes from stock ? You installed a Pentode/Triode switch - is that something my tech should be able to do easily ? Also, does that work just on the Mic channel, or both channels ? Would you install a Pentode/Triode switch for each channel (ie. would it be possible ??) Many thanks for your help !! I'm in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK - so nowhere near anyone that has worked on such amps before.
Great video thanks! Just curious, how did you deduce that those certain capacitors needed to be replaced? Did you measure them directly or how? Thanks mate!
You seem like a really nice guy.the longer the leads of elec. Component.the better they are as antenna s for unwanted noise
I built a 5F2A Princeton in the standard Fender chassis. Hum is nearly inaudible. I added a 5H choke after the first power supply cap and made the preamp caps all 20uF. For grounding I isolated all the jacks and control pots from the chassis, and ran every ground in the circuit to one 18awg bus wire grounded at a single point on the chassis, at a ground lug under a transformer bolt. Center taps for B+ and 6.3v line are also grounded there. Fender's layout is a total mess. I ignored it.
Even up to 10 Mohm on the grid .........indeed rarely seen today.
The filaments can be supplied with a DC voltage using a voltage regulator which would eliminate filament hum.
Hi, great video, my small champ 600 reissue, makes ugly hum, and after improve componentes, move place transformer and put a cable direct to heaters, it's still there... It is a way to kill it? Or diminish... Thanks, sorry for my English, greatings from Spain!
I just found a MASCO MA25-N in a shed. It’s in bad shape though
That Hammond hifi OT is a million miles from the dinky original, whether foresight or luck it sounds really good.
Your amp sounds incredible! You did a fantastic job! This amp has the sound of the 1940 and 1950s amps better than any of the reissue amps I have ever heard!
Has a nice Bluesy tone to it, especially with the Tremolo effect.
Geez, I've never seen one of them before.
Hi Mark, Could I ask you two things? What was the secondary HT voltage ratings on the power tranny you used for the build and what was the primary impedance of the output tranny?
Nice build!
i knew just from the birds going off that y’all were Australian. Love the video, hoping i can get into amp teching as a sustainable job one day, but for now watching these will suffice.
That vintage .1 mustard cathode bypass cap just doubled the value of that amp !! Hahah
Thank you
Great job But No Screen Grid resistors ?
Yeah I know. It would be safer with 'em, but my brief was to get the amp going with only the most necessary changes. So I kept the circuit original, and only replaced those worn out electrolytics.
I have a fender 007 bassbreaker amp, that has the low tone hum. I read that it's a single ended amp. I actually bought two head versions and both hum. I'd like to reduce the hum.
Pommie-Amp 😂, nice one 😅!
You're right old tube reel to reels work great to build amps out of. I built 3 out of old Webster Ekotape Reel to Reel. They have a single ended 5 watt 6V6GT and 2 of a 6AV6 preamp and they sound awesome. I use the cabinet and put an 8 inch speaker in it. Bearly fits . Your amp sounds great with harp and guitar. Good job.
You may be able to loosen the clamp on the cap and lift it up high enough to get at the wires
Nice hole in the sock Mike!
Recently came across your TH-cam channel and subscribed to it, really enjoying watching your videos, I have a mid 70's (I'm guessing) non-reverb Fender Super Twin all valve guitar amp that a friend sold to me for only Au$300.00, brand new I think it would easily have costed ten times as much as that brand-new, it's housed in a wooden Fender head cab, it works really well as a bass amp too, it uses six STR 6L6 power valves, a 12AT7, a 12AU7, two 12AX7A, and a 7025, puts out 180W RMS, or a whopping 395W peak, very loud clean amp.
Sounds brutal!😄 Too much power for the gigs I do, but yeah, nice for bass.
Really nice amp. What a pain to replace that can...
You did a great job Mark, thanks a lot:-) Now for some AC DC :-)
Mains earth wires can either be Green, or Green/Yellow.
According to the current Australian legislation and Australian Standards, it is mandatory for all 240V AC mains powered equipment to have an earth wire that is securely bonded to the chassis for it to be legal.
I read somewhere that those old round Bulgin/Belkin plugs are no-longer considered safe to use for 240V AC mains and have been de-rated to 50V AC.
That song is much harder to play then it sounds. especially singing while driving that rhythm Guitar!! Freight Train!!!! Nice Work Gentleman!!!!!
nice job, sounds great! Nice playing too.
I had a ‘78 MMB amp. Got it for $50 in great condition. Even had an Altec speaker that goes for as much or more than the amp normally does! Sold it but wish I still had it. Speaker especially!! Mine had 6v6’s and be SS rectification.
How do you find the sound quality compared to the oem bose ones?
Great sound and playing!!
