Oliebollentocht 2022 Velomobile Meet
After being cancelled for 2 years in a row, the Oliebollentocht finally met again in Reuver, Netherlands. This was an opportunity for owners of various VMs from all around western Europe to meet, talk, admire each others' rides, and then ride together on a 67km tour through the surrounding countryside.

Small bit of video from the first ride of my new Carbon Quest velomobile as I took delivery at the factory in Dronten, NL in 2017. I ended up riding it the 260 km's back to where I live in Germany. Unfortunately, I didn't bring the right GoPro mount so there's not too much footage.

Descending the biggest hill in the Netherlands
มุมมอง 6274 ปีที่แล้ว
Testing out the new Schlumpf Mountain Drive and new 11-36 rear cassette...I tackled the largest hill in all of The Netherlands in Vaals in the province of Limburg. I was able to climb to the top without stopping which is a first for me. The gearing before was not low enough and made this climb quite difficult. Video shot with a Kodak PixPro SP360 4K 360-cam.
Love to see how you travel! Can you maybe do a video about your solar panels and how exactly you use them? I was thinking about making a trip with my Quest XS from Amsterdam to Berlin, but power supply now is the challenge I'm facing in planning my trip. So if you could give some advice, I'll be much obliged!
Ich wünsche mir so viele Velomobile im normalen Straßenverkehr statt der Autos. ❤😊
Bike weighs 350lbs? How on earth fo you get it up hills with that weight?
What kiiled the suspense in the tunnel is that we know you surivived otherwise would not be seeing the video. What gradient can you handle before having to get out and push?
Wonderful series, thank you. Would you recommend your tent ? Are you still a velomobilisti ? Cheerio from Germany
Mase progreso ...
I wasn't on this ride, but the 2022 OBT in Utrecht. And I recognize group picture location from this years GLT23 . Am going OBT23 & GLT24 in my Victorinian blocked Quest, might see you there, thanks for the video!

That was an epic ride, congratulations on this feat. I have an M9 and loving the rides!
Thanks! M9 is an awesome machine! I'm about to upgrade to a SnoekL, so the globe-trotting Quest will be for sale next year :)
Nice ride 🙂👍💙💛🌻
binge watched all 5 episodes in 2 days... great stuff. I'm in Finland and already looking for a velomobile, maybe the Quatrevelo... these are the commuting future for short journeys and why not an adventure. Already thinking of Kotka to lapland gih up in the Arctic Circle.... some 1000km, now that would be something.
Finland looks to be a great place for cycling...at least from Saukki's videos! Good luck with your travel plan!
Been binge watching this series. very nice. As an ex skydiver I wanted to suggest a BASE 24" (or bigger) pilot chute with bridle would be good. Pack it into a BOC spandex pocket with hacky handle near the cockpit and just throw when needed.
I finally bought a cheap, small exercise chute and I hope to test it out this summer.

Whatched your footage loved it
Loved the clip thanks John. I think the 4 wheel Quests make sense. I rode a 3 wheel Quest in NZ for a few years and it felt tippy on steep cambers. Thanks again.
Yep, the Quest is definitely tippy...mostly because of the high center of gravity made worse by a narrow track width. I've had it on 2 wheels about 6 or 7 times...never rolled it thankfully. I have ordered a SnoekL which has a similar track width but it sits much lower and the handling is NIGHT & DAY! The SnoekL seemed glued to the road compared to the Quest.
I'd love to join Oliebollentocht... Thanks for the interesting clip👍
Hi! Great vlog, thanks. Question: on ferries, what vehicle category did you register your vélomobile as? It’s a bike, technically, but takes the space of a large motorcycle or even a small car, so ?
I always just booked a bicycle ticket and nobody ever asked any questions. The worst difficulty I had was on the Wall Street Ferry Terminal. It was very difficult to get the bike onto that ferry, but it barely fit.
Thanks for sharing your journey. I plan to start touring when I retire in a couple of years. I love watching videos like yours for inspiration.
Great video, John, many thanks for sharing! I missed this one riding a tour of Italy during the that time
You're so lucky to be living in Europe. You're got castles, cathedrals, ton's of history...and no shortage of velos.
Where are you from,if i can ask? Iam from central europe.
Discovered this video while looking for (maybe) my first Velomobile and was surprised to see you went through Bremen. When you comeback you should definetly stop by the famous "Bremer Stadtmusikanten" and the Bonbon Manufacture located inside the Böttcherstraße (Not healthy but tasty :D)
Thanks! I'm living in Germany again so maybe it will be possible someday!
My dad send me this video on WhatsApp and i watched it and i think that you are An true legend in velomobile to europe. My dad Also have An velomobile
Thoroughly enjoyed your videos. What a fabulous trip. I think you're a natural at presenting, so informative, easy going and empathetic. Many thanks
I envy your Velomobile environment... from Republic of Korea
Nice to meet you John! See you next time.! Greets the translator.😀
Hé John, Great footage!! Fun to meet you and riding with 155 other Velomobiles through the NL and D. Maybe we’ll make it to the next one on the 28th of December
It was also really great to finally meet you Casper! Thanks for the great conversation, and I hope to see you again in December.
It was nice to meet you :) I’m the one with the blue quest from 2018. We talked the the second stage of the tour.
Hello! I do remember you, always nice to see a beautiful Quest...and yours was in great shape. My only regret was not picking a different color for my Quest, and I really like the blue color that you selected. Hope to see you again in Utrecht in December!
I did not notice you where at the event too! Still want to drive with you some time ;) finally a month ago I got my new Quatrevelo 302. This was the first time driving an oliebollentocht. Nice to see you did meet Alve too. I find him quite a legend! But to me he’d say. “I’m a normal person”. But the driving to nordkapp in the winter was something that I as a “normal person” would not do I think hahahaha. He actually drove 4 days with his QuattroVelo to this event from Sweden. But hey. That’s something I do see you doing too 😂.
I wish I had more time to talk with him. Quite an incredible story which he was pretty modest about. Riding to the OBT from Sweden in 4 days is just bonkers! Even if this was southern Sweden. When I hear about the incredible distances others ride with their velos I am really impressed. More than 20,000 km per year is not unheard of.
Did you need to haul your Quest all the way back from the States for this event?
I believe he lives not to far away from the event. Somewhere in Germany if I am correct. But he’s American for sure :)
I haven't spoke on the channel about it any...but I actually moved BACK to Germany 2 years ago (again). Complicated story, but it seems I'll have to do the Ride-back-to-the-USA once again in the future. Perhaps I head south this time ;)
@@quest818velomobile6 That all sounds very interesting, John. I didn't realize it has been two years since your trip to the U.S. When you returned to Germany, which shipping method did you employ for your Quest?
@@Brian-bp5pe When I accepted the job offer in Germany my new employer paid to move over all of our household goods in a 20' shipping container...and this included the velo. The moving company built a very substantial crate for the Quest and it was well protected. So I always have a way to get it back to the USA when the time comes (if I choose to not ride it back again)
@@quest818velomobile6 John, that island-hopping thing was a very creative solution to the shipping problem. I know that ferries have always gone back-and-forth between Ireland and Britain. Would you happen to know if there is any kind of maritime ferry service between Ireland and destinations further to the west? I don't think any such service (scheduled, or unscheduled) exists. If one has the time, travelling this way has a certain appeal to it. Ditto for ferry service between Newfoundland and points further east. It's like living in that (Shel Silverstein) children's poem about reaching the place where the sidewalk ends!
I just found this, binge watched all the episodes. Awesome! Were you worried about theft on the journey?
Hi there! I only worried about theft in Brooklyn!! The entire trip, I left the bike next to my tent at night and never had anybody try to mess with it.
Why a sunpanul? IT lading a battery
The solar panel was used to recharge a cellphone, rear LED light, and a 5v backup battery bank.
I went over to Holland 8 years ago to collect her and had to put new shocks wheels and brakes on it to get it on the road i had it for about a year or so and unfortunately had to sell her. Where she when to a guy in London who then sold it to another guy in London then it was sold to Jason
The Alleweder looked good when I saw it. It seems to fare quite a bit better with the NYC streets than his Mango does.
Your European trip was great to watch a great achievement!
I bought another Alleweader just recently the bigger A4
The Alleweader was mine by the way
Awesome. I'm glad you found my channel and got to see your old bike. That's pretty awesome!
Awesome. Did you plan every day in advance or play it by ear?
Hi Dave, I pre-planned the entire trip over the course of a year. Initially, I had planned to travel from Iceland over to Nova Scotia, Bar Harbor Maine, then down through Boston and NYC...but the grounding of the 737-MAX skewered those plans as I couldn't get the bike shipped to Nova Scotia from Iceland.
The people at Maastricht that where pointing at your velomobile where surprised and told eachother “it’s recording right now”. The bottom part of the Netherlands is the province called Limburg. They talk in dialect most of the time. It lends words from German but don’t tell them they do speak German because they usually don’t like that haha. Limburg people are more friendly and relaxed then the rest of the country. Don’t get me wrong but that’s how other Dutch people usually talk about the Limburg people. Most likely they where not yelling at you. Interesting to know is that at Valkenburg and other parts of Limburg where floods just a month ago or so. Many people (1000’s) have lost their homes! Last time there was a flood was 1995 and I don’t think it was that bad. Even in surrounding countries Belgium and Germany where floods. They where hit harder and people even died over there. Sad. If you are considering to come back to Holland some time, let me know. I would like to meet you then. You can stay here if you like. I’ve ordered a QuattroVelo previous week! Thank you for your inspiring videos. I really like them.
Jules, Congrats on the QV order! I live in Germany right over the Dutch border near Sittard...I moved back over to Europe in 2020. Once you get your velo let me know and we can meet up! I'm glad you enjoy the videos...I need to make more of them but I have too many interests and making videos is very time intensive for me. Anyway, all the best!
@@quest818velomobile6 thanks. Take it easy. It’s not that I expect videos and you need to make more ;). It’s ok like it is right now! I certainly gonna try it to make videos too. I find it very relaxing to watch :). Now….if I find a way to send you a private message somehow or a way you can send me one, I can send you some details about how to meet up then. The folks at velomobiel.nl told me it will take about half a year from now till I can retrieve the bike from their shop. I’m at their order list at their site.
Hi, Quest 818. Beautiful video, nice to see and hear a visitors point of view of my home country. Good to see you got good weather on the south-east corner, which is actually rather unusual. Sorry about the not-so-friendly people at the camp site, probabl yjust cultural differences and the gap may be so wide that they were unable to meet you mid-way. It would be interesting to get in touch and hear a little bit about your experience with icelandic traftic and drivers, especially how considerate (or not) they were towards your velo. I am the chairman of the largest cyclist association in Reykjavik (Reiðhjolabændur, meaning Cycing Farmers) and am working towards getting authorities to take cyclist safety more seriously. Again, thanks for the great video. Best regards, Birgir Birgisson.
Hello Birgir! Thanks so much for the nice comments about my trip! Those folks at the campground were not Icelandic...and I have no hard feelings now about the interaction, in fact I feel a bit silly about it now but I did want to record my impressions exactly as they were at the time. I had mostly a very positive experience in Iceland with fellow drivers. Primarily the east end of the country was very quiet and I didn't encounter a large amount of traffic until passing west of Hofn. I had one driver near Starmýri almost hit me head-on. I didn't get it on video but he was using his cellphone to record me as he drove toward me. He drifted left over the centerline and was about 1-2 seconds from hitting me head-on when he veered back into his lane. I really had nowhere to go either as there was a huge drop-off on my right. I was pretty shook up from it and stopped on the side of the road for a while. I'm not sure why I never mentioned it until now. The only other really close call was in Denmark. I found cycling on the road too uncomfortable as I got to Selfoss as there were too many big trucks and cars and it was too dangerous for them to all be passing me. It was a good choice to go south from there. I noted that there is no suitable bike path from Keflavik to Reykjavik, and had to ride on the shoulder of the main road (highway?). Cycling in downtown Reykjavik was excellent and a lot of fun. Some decent bike paths to be found, but I always felt comfortable on the smaller streets. Other than the coarse road surface and winds, I found the trip across your country to be the most amazing cycling experience of my life. I only wish I could have met you or someone from your organization. I didn't really make a big deal about the trip at the time, and I wish now I would have used it as a means to spread acceptance for cycling. Anyway all the best!!
Thinking of getting a velomobile for this exact reason! You must be about the only person on YT making these bikepacking vids with a velo, thanks so much! Question: how do you secure or lock your bike whenever youre leaving it for a hike or when you're camping? Great videos!
Hi Sander, The truth is that I don't lock the bike very often. During that trip 2 years ago I never really left the bike unattended for very long. It is a large, bulky thing not easily carted away. When I am camping I park it right next to my tent so I can keep an ear on it.
Grossartige Reise deines Lebens👍💪Grüsse aus Deutschland.
I can see you put a lot of work into making these videos, they're great.love the adventurous spirit, you're pushing me to get off my ass and plan a trip! Very cool journey
Finally got round to watching part 4, a fantastic vlog dude.
Thanks John! Iceland was the best part of the trip! Hope to see you again at Spezi someday.
@@quest818velomobile6 your vlog transported me there, I will follow in your footsteps one day #inspired :🙂
@@velo-ads4206 If you ever get to Iceland to ride your velo, let me know and I will help out with some local knowledge.
I wonder if you could put a Rolhoff internal hub on the velo. Those have a huge range of gears.
It would be tough on a Quest because of the wheel only being bolted to the right side of the hub. The Rohloff also has a substantial energy loss in some gears (8th gear is 1:1 I think). I used to have one on another bike. Since the 2019 trip I have replaced my front derailleur with a Schlumpf Mountain Drive. This is useful as I am in a 1:1 gear ratio 99% of the time, then down to a 2.5:1 reduction only when I need to climb (with a slight energy loss). Swapped the front ring out for a 57T chainring. I think it would be a much better velo now on a trip like that. Since I live in Germany again now, it may happen again someday ;)
Hi there. I work on AB GK at the moment and heard some years ago about an orange velomobile on base. I was surprised to find your video. What an AWESOME trip you made. Really nice to see that Alleweder in New York and wow, after all those km's, your bike is still in one piece. Your video makes me want to hit the road too. Fun fact: your former landlord John is one of my colleagues.
Hi Marcel! Thanks for the good words! Another fun fact...since last year the velomobile is back on base here at GK! Maybe we can meet up sometime. 👍
Kann Ich auch. mal eine Testfahrt bei Ihnen machen, bevor ich mich entscheide, einen zu bestellen, oder kaufen?

Cool trip we enjoyed it thanks, I've got to get me one of these
After crossing the continental US twice and always having most of my troubles to be the front wheels, a guy in Seattle gave me an idea about front wheel lacing. I have the out side two cross and the inside is radial laced. Problem solved. So far anyway. Now if I could just find a cure for all of the flats I get, having to run on roads, with cars.
Kirk, Thanks for the tip! I just got new Alex Rims for the velo and am getting them laced onto the hubs this week. We will see if that solves my issue. Apparently, the tubeless rims that I was originally sold had the spokes not properly aligned perpendicular to the rim edge and created stress on the spoke nipple.
@@quest818velomobile6 I hope you got the Alex Downhill rims. Actually I don't know their current line up but the Downhill rim, was the best for our use they put out, last I checked. The Velocity Dyad rim that I use on the front now, has proven to be the best for the front so far. I use the Velocity Cliffhanger on the back. I lost a few tires and rims from hitting pot holes at speed, that were hidden by water. Which can be bad, when in the back of beyond on Hwy 12 on the Colombia Plateau. You can replace spokes, tires or tubes from your spares stash but a rim? I almost went the tubeless route since it has worked so well for Saukki, over in Western Siberia but realized he doesn't run the mountain roads I do, or across the high plateau. I tend to stick to between SD and the Pacific these days. So I picked the tuffist, light rims I could find, laced them up two cross on the outer and radial on the inside. So far no briken spokes or other problems. Although going down the East side of Lolo Pass at warp speed, had me thinking something, was going to break fer sure. Good luck to you and all who sail in you.
