Hi Geoff I've watch a couple of your videos on the Kato 800, you got the lights to work at the front and rear of the train, I assume you was running it on iTrain but what hardware is supplying the power please?, on any of my trains with the decoders that fit that type of train from Kato all work fine if I use my Piko controller. But when on I put it on to the iTrain layout nothing I can't turn them on or of, if I turn the lights on with the Piko controller then transfer it to iTrain layout they are on but I can't turn them off or they won't change direction. So the question is did you do something to iTrain or is it the Hardware you use makes it do it. I would be very grateful for any help. I thought I had already subscribed to your channel but I have now. Colin
Hi Colin , on this Layout my DCC Controler/ power source is the Digikijies DR5000 now the YAMoRC YD 7001. I assume you did programme the Light decoders to the same decoder number as teh main drive decoder ?? otherwise a very intresting Issue you mention , could you email me your Itain File and I can have a look it . Geoff
Great video Geoff, really well explained and paced nicely. Thank you! I was able to pick up a DR5000 for USD$200 from Iron Planet Hobbies. Hard to match any other DCC system for that price. Installed the Wi-Fi YD9401 upgrade to my DR5000 and now running as a YD7001. A couple of small glitches along the way but thanks to Karst Drenth were resolved quickly. The old classic download again, re start, re boot etc. technical fix! Gotta love software/firmware!! Question for you, which app do you use? I have an old Samsung A70 phone that I no longer use and planning to use that. The options as I currently see are: DigiTrainsPro 7.31 which looks pretty decent. Then there is RtDrive Lenz and Engine Driver. Rocos Z21 app is also an option, but I seem to recall reading somewhere this is now a paid subscription only version? At this stage I only have couple of locos and my roster is unlikely to grow to more than 10-12max. I run KATO Unitrack and all turnouts will continue to be switched via the Kato powerpack and the Kato switch machines. I see no value in adding to DCC. I will want a system that allows for easy consisting. I will eventually have a couple of SD40s + SD45s that always seem to look good in consists. Not wanting to get into any heavy advanced programming or the likes of JMRI. I'm only running DCC control, no interest in sound, its just annoying IMO. Unlikely to add signals, but if I did would probably use the Kato ones. I will likely add a TCS UWT-50 or UWT-100 at some point (using there decoders where possible) if I find control with my old Android phone becomes an issue. Thanks for comments in advance.
Geoff, why didn't you make baseboard 1 a bit longer so that ALL the point motors were on the same board? K
Very informative. I'm brave now to have a go at my own. Thank you.

G'day Geoff Greetings from DOWN UNDER (Australia) have just discovered your bingeworthy series of videos full of wonderful advice and inspiration. Have just retired from the day-to-day workforce😊 and a model railway is on the list of activities to roll the sleeves up and get immersed, so was very fortunate to have your series of videos. I am interested in what forward thinking is needed to allow for potential automation when laying track and what system of detection you use for the signals - which add such realism. Looking forward to the next installment Many thanks for sharing Cheers Phil
Nice channel
Hi Geoff, this is a great series but what has happened to the updates? Have you decided not to continue? Saw Flint Hills 1 at GETS - absolutely superb. The stand out layout for me and my son (along with the Swiss layout upstairs). Hope everything is okay and that you can resume the build series. Best wishes.
Hi Geoff, I have to say how pleased i was to discover you and your layout at GETS on Saturday. I was the guy in the flat cap taking lots of pics with a 20 year old similar layout that is in the process of recovery. I have enjoyed ALL 26 of your videos over the last 24 hours and have learnt an immense amount of info and advice re DCC’ing various trains of which we both share. Thanks for taking the time to video all your experiences. I am a Joiner of nearly 50 years and i swear i am looking at a chippy of some level as you are very competent with wood and tools and related processes. So good to see!! I have started a shopping list of items based on your experience, some hard to get or not available now sadly. Please keep the videos going on Flint Hills 2 as it is indeed for me, essential viewing,, and good entertainment.!!! Love the Anyrail print out process as it is super helpful !! I could tell by your drilling technique that you have dot and dab outside walls.!!! 😂 Catch you at some point at a show Geoff!! Nick from Milton Keynes.
Hi Geoff. It was great to chat with you at GETS. The layout is looking great. As I said to you, even better to see in person. All the best Allan
🤔👉🤳
Hi. Just wondering how your new build is going?
Fantastic video, many thanks
I was really bummed out, I picked up a full set of the NMT on eBay with these extra coaches made by the same person I believe, but the day of posting them the seller dropped two of the coaches onto the kitchen floor & they were badly damaged so I had to have a refund & it escaped my grasp :(
Thanks for a great video, it now means I can convert my Eurostar and not have to leave it in its box.
when will this command station be in stock?
13:57 what value resistor did you use?
Hi Geoff, I received my Class 28 today, lovely loco, but like you and so many others it just refuses to run smoothly, everything is intermittent, sound works then cuts out, lights work then go out, motor starts to run then stops, absolute nightmare of a loco, I bought mine over a year since your post so obviously nothing has changed at Rapido, they have had a year to fix the problems but have failed to do so unless mine is old stock. I've just switched over to N gauge and I'm wondering if I've made a mistake, this is the second loco in less than a week that I shall have to send back, I bought a very expensive Graham Farish 2-car DMU with sound at over £300 and that arrived with the front axle on one of the bogies broken off, I've never had any problems with 00 or 009 locos until now, I'm hoping I don't regret swapping to N but I am starting to get a bit concerned about the lack of quality control on the first 2 locos I've bought!
hi , It don't look good for the hobby. they are trying to pack so many features and detail into the loco that they forget the basic's ie it needs to run and work . the problem is not just n gauge but oo as well. Rapido where very quick to fix mine but its still not the best runner regards Geoff
@@flinthillsmodelrailway Hi Geoff, just got my new Graham Farish DMU back, front axle refitted but now loco refuses to run, sound works well but absolutely no movement from loco and directional lights on one car do not work, this loco cost over £360, its crazy, these things are not fit for purpose, where is the quality control. I think I might cut my losses and give up on N gauge, 2 locos in two weeks and nothing works, ridiculous. I built a 009 layout and all my dcc sound locos worked fine straight from the box and they run on basically N gauge track, I think you are right the manufacturers of N and 00 seem to be packing in so many extra functions that they have lost sight of the fact that these locos also need to run. Cheers Dave
Two questions please. 1- is it neccesary to perform that Switch from DR5000 to YD7001 ?? 2/- will it be still recognized by ITRAIN ??
hi No its not necessary to do the conversion and it still will be recognised by ITrain . The advantage i have found in updating to YD7001 is much Better Communications between Itrain and supported software, Geoff
@@flinthillsmodelrailway Hi All, I just upgraded today...you don't need passcodes anymore and everything seems smoother...I am also a user of itrain. I needed to change my com port (obviously) but also found that the YD upgrade did not keep my S88 set up. I needed to re-create the S88 in the configuration page of the YD...only took a few seconds but something important to note if you use S88....Best wishes
hi geoff great how to fit the decoders in the class 800 and this has come in very handy as i have a gwr set on order and i will be dcc chipping mine. great video again mate hope to see you soon at a exhibition. hope you and the family are all well. peter
hi Mate , all good here thanks , Been very very busy , glad the 800 video was good , I'll be at the key model world on saturday
Hi Geoff. You're right about your tools sounding as though we're at the dentist! I made the mistake of buying several locos from the Masterpiece range of Graham Farish models, leaving me (as you have had to do) to convert them if I want to run them on DCC. Thankfully, my Class 47 is a later(?) model and is DCC ready. Needless to say, I won't buy any more analogue models. That's a nice little test circuit board you have there; may we have details, please? There is considerable opinion on running DCC locos in DC mode and I am very wary of this; would you please either reply or make (a short?) video on this issue as others may have the same concern.
Hi Geoff. Thanks for the heads-up on fitting sound to this model. I too will probably go with sound on the driving car only. I made a note of how you did this for the GWR 800 IET - though I have yet to try this modification. Fingers crossed on both models!
Hi Geoff. I presume you checked that the radiator was level before setting up the laser? A very neat job of making the baseboards - well done. Nice back garden, by the way.
At last a freindly point motor
The hardest part for me was getting the boggies back in and the pickups touching the frame, took me about 1/2 an hour. Thanks for a great video worked a treat.
lovely job, thank you
Hi Geoff, my two azumas already have directional lighting on DC, do I need to install the head and tail light decoder for dcc?
Hi. I would say yes to make them DCC working which will allow you to turn them on and off via the decoder
Geoff just come across your class 28 comments. Any further update? I too have had issues. Mine is the one identified in your earlier video which is that the contacts are adrift on the front bogie causing intermittent running particularly over points. This seems a poor design to me. It has already been back Rapido once. They presumably twisted these down and sent it back as it worked for a short spell of time before having the same problem start again. I am currently running it with two wooden shims jammed in to force the contact foil down but this isnt a permanent solution. Rapido are now not responding to me. I am thinking of resolving the issue by lightly soldering the foil to the contact but this is a bit drastic.
Hello, where can i buy the Class 800 dcc sound file?
Hi Geoff! Great bit of carpentry skill there! A very neat and tidy job you've made with the baseboards! I'm very impressed at how straight the walls of your house are - mine are all over the place! Lol! All the best, Ian.
Hi Geoff excellent channel, which I recently came across and enjoyed watching all your content, FH 1 was a very impressive test layout ! Looking forward to following your progress as well, especially your DCC implementation as I also want to use as I start my build. Great content.
Hello Geoff - just found your channel via @Chris-BognorRegis and have subscribed - that installation was pretty much perfect - well done. Looks like you have loads of scope there so am looking forward to seeing how you progress. Regards Steve
Great work on the board. Looks like a solid build. I'm doing a build atm but nowhere near your progress 😂... Hats off to you 🎉
Is it possible to covert this model from DC to DCC sound ?
Looking forward to watching in . I’d only say one I wouldn’t recommend putting the outside track too near the wall , so restricting I did this and unfortunately cannot change it much to my regret anyways all the best in your build regards Fred 😊
Well, that was a great talk and walk through. Nice work on the boards and see how it is coming on. Nice design and arrangement planning!
I love a layout build progression series, you've earnt yourself a new subscriber!
Hi Geoff, that looks awesome and you seem to know your way around power tools. Great work, following as always 👏🏻👏🏻..Chris
Great work with the baseboards, I loved the way you designed them to fit together and slot in against the walls. Keep up the great work Allan
Hi I came to your stand No.22 I voted for you I was the person with the west ham body warmer with my dad and brother I hope you win the little trophy! Good model
It's great when it all comes together. Great woodworking skills as well. Looking forward to the next installment atb Andy
Good to see the baseboards going in Geoff. It is good when you can lay that 1:1 print of the track plan down and see how it is going to look, and where points actually sit on the baseboard. All looking go so far. Stephen
Hi Geoff - excellent bit of carpentry there !! Certainly going to be a much bigger layout than FH 1. Looking forward to seeing the next video. Cheers Euan
What size wood you use for the baseboard top
Nice work!
My goodness Geoff was it really three years ago you put your first video on here. Time flies. Really glad Flint Hills 1 which I think looks great has found its place on the exhibition scene. I might get to see it one day perhaps. Really enjoyed this latest update and your home layout is looking very impressive. Must admit in this video is the part I enjoy most building the staging and showing the plan of the layout. Regards Chris
Solid woodwork and great progress Geoff..
Nice work Geoff 👍 cheers al
Hi Geoff, nice work so far mate, looking forward to more. Sadly I can’t make the Basildon Model Railway Show as it’s fallen on one of my golfing Saturdays. Cheers for now, John
