A channel for sharing some of my building and learning adventures. I love watching others build, so I decided to pay it forward. My only rule…it can’t take longer to edit than the job itself.
Removing the VW Bug Body
With a little help from my 12 year old son, we got the body off in a little under a hour. Now I can focus on the rear suspension and body tubes in preparation for a roll cage!

I like the nice rock-n-roll theme you used to complement this video.
Rock on CMA. Thanks for the comment!
Nice work. I came up with one of these a while back to jack up my 55 Chevy by the trailer hitch.
That’s awesome. Did it work well?
Good idea and inexpensive. However, could only watch a few minutes of the video due to the annoying music in the background. Maybe your next video will be better. Good luck to you.
Thank you. I’m learning the ins and outs of editing. Thanks for your feedback.
Take an old tire and cut it up. Use the tire tread for the bottom of your foot and rivet or bolt it on. It adds way more grip and increases safety. I did that to my hi-lift jack and has reduced slippage a lot.
That’s a great idea! I have a perfect tire for the job!!!!
@@MiahsBug where did you source that articulating foot? Looks like a nice one.
@saltymethods2637 it’s on McmasterCarr. Around $30
@@MiahsBug Thanks!
@saltymethods2637 you’re welcome!
I am going to have to build a A-arm Baja at some point. First I guess need to get the other 2 done.
Go for it! You have two bajas right now being built?
@@MiahsBug Yellow one is "for my wife" and the Orange one we just picked up is a project for a buddy.
Ah yes! The “for my wife” bug. I need to get her one…hehehe
Had to hike out 4 miles
when did this happen??
@@Clapped4246 about 2 years ago
@@MiahsBug oh ok
Good lookin jack
Thanks User-wr1. Good looking user name!
Loved this! I am going to make one for my truck and Jeep. Much nicer than my super heavy farm jack.
Have fun old man. You have other socials so I can see the build?
Only broke two bolts? Must be a California car. Excited to see the cage work!
Yep, California car. Rust is very minimal. WD-40 helped a lot too.
@@MiahsBug Do you think if you used real penetrating oil, it wouldn't have broke the bolts?
@SpaceBallOne-fc3ep I don’t think so. The bolts were almost rusted through and very thin. I do think if the oil had gravity working with it, it would have done a better job.
Is there a reason to include the round tubing and pin? If you had cut that off and welded directly to the c channel, you would have your lifting point closer to the center of the jack so it wouldn't kick out like that, and it would be stronger. Originally I was thinking you would weld one of those rings directly to the vehicle so it could be a lifting point and storage location. Also, turn down the music. It's louder than your talking in a couple places.
The only reason we did that is so it can be changed out if needed. You definitely could weld directly to the leg and not use the pin portion. Good idea Kami!
I love the idea! It's great! I would however, try to move the lift point closer to the vertical section. I think you'd have less issue of it wanting to kick out (which is the scary part of all high lift jacks).
I agree. The lift arm should be as short as practical. The articulating foot helps with being able to angle the leg directly under the lift point to reduce the chances of it slipping out
Interesting , Thank You. A fine idea
Glad you liked it!
Ask your friend where he got the swivel for base. Perhaps a part number as well. I gave up trying to find one that large.
He got it on McMaster-Carr website. PN 6111K64
They have lots of options for all kinds of things
Thanks so much. I bought the same jack for a different project that got tabled. It has been gathering dust for long enough.
@@JackSmith-jj3bi good luck Jack!
As I noticed from the comments and your responses regarding the music, and while I personally like the music - reminds me of The B-52s or Oingo Boingo - it is too loud for the video. In just about every video editing software you can control the volume on the individual audio tracks. The best range for music along with video is to reduce the volume -20 to -25db. There is also a thing called audio ducking, to find it for your particular editing system, look it up on YT. It's where the music sound automatically reduces in volume when someone is speaking and then comes back to full volume when not speaking. As for the jack 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼! I made one similar from a 5k jack square jack foot 20 years ago to lift my lifted F-350. They work great. Are better than Hi-Lift, and lighter to maneuver.
Thank for the feedback. I use CapCut because it’s so fast and easy. I will look and see if they have that feature or I just won’t play music while I talk. Would love to see the one you built. I’m always so intrigued by people’s creations.
I love your videos Miah!
Thanks Dad! All the things I learned from you, passing down to my children.
Nice build! Great idea👍🏻 For those that don’t wan’t to fabricate.. you can pick up a standard Landrover defender jack for cheaps. Got one for 40$.. it holds 3000lbs/1400kg. I use it directly in the framerails of my Samurai. Only LR thing I trust😄 Cheers from Denmark 🇩🇰
Dang that’s a good price! I’ll keep my eye out for one. Cheers 🇺🇸
Nice progress! When I pulled my cab, I was surprised about how much easier than I imagined. Did you find it easier or harder than you thought?
It was definitely easier. There is something intimidating about pulling a body off. This was cake. I love the simplistic design of the VW Bug.
I remember those days , I was lucky i had 2 teenagers and there friends over for a pool party and before i allowed them in the pool they had to help me lift the body. This is going to be a fun project to watch. I built a baja bug about 15 years ago but have since sold it to build a long travel Manx that I am enjoying now. Keep up the great work.Have you decided what motor your going with ??.
It is so fun! And enjoying the build with my 3 boys. I was going to call in the Calvary (friends) but thought this would be fun. I have a motor already! It’s a J30A4 and a 091 trans. I love the Manx and Thing builds!
Damn Miah, Im regretting ever selling my green and black baja bug.. may have to try to get another one.
Maybe time to buy another one…👀👀
I’m bad about not wearing gloves also. It just sucks having the sun burn after.
Yes. I’ve only gotten sunburned twice. I usually only do that for tacks or small beads
When you said sketchy, I kept waiting for it to slide off in the rear when the nose of the car was down😲 To move mine I called up 4 friends and bought them breakfast. I still have to remove mine again to ream out some hole that don't line up with the new floor pan. I may mock up my entire roll cage first, then pull the body off to fully weld the cage...but I'm still looking at options... looking forward to the start of your cage.
4 friends would have been a lot easier. I didn’t realize how light the body actually is.
Awesome 👏
Thank you BOCHAZI
I didn’t see anything too sketchy there…. Apparently you didn’t see the one a few years back using ratchet straps from the attic access to hang the body 😂
Lol no I didn’t. It crossed my mind going in the attic for the lift point. I’ll have to find that one. I found your channel pretty late and I’m still catching up on all the episodes
Ah yes, the ol “use my workbench to help split my car into two” trick. Who hasn’t had to use that one?? 😂. Love seeing the progress!
Haha, yes. I just kept telling Nolan “this could all fall any second”
The worst design I’ve ever seen😂, redneck mechanic at its best !!! Torque lift is off the chart !!
Just don't use an impact and keep the gear greased.
That’s what I hear, impacts are a “no go”
Awesome job man. Love it 🤙
Thanks so much brother!
You sir.....are my hero
🤣thanks. TH-cam University is a good school
I just found you and I am a new subscriber for the Baja bug content. I have been assembling a small machine shop to support my new channel that will be kicked off with a 1928 build of a Morgan Hillclimb Racer. I am going to specialize in pre war race cars and machines as well as equipment.
That’s sounds awesome. I’ll throw a sub your way as well sir. Thank you
@@MiahsBug I do not know what I am going to call my channel yet. Where are you located/ I am in Pennsylvania....I am thinking about machines and motors...
@@johnkoury1116 “Machine and Motor Co.” sounds cool. I’m in California
@@MiahsBug Thank you!
I would have loved to watch this but had to leave after almost three minutes because of the overpowering crappy background music stopped me from hearing a word you said.
Yep, got lots of feedback on that. It’s a learning process. Next one won’t be like that.
@@MiahsBug You'll get hate on the music genre, the music too loud, the music too quiet, the music tempo, so you change it then you'll get hate that it changed...you'll never please everyone. Don't waste your time trying to appease em
Thanks Mr. Moto. I agree to some extent. I can’t fix the “crappy” music because I’m going to choose what I like lol. But if they can’t hear me over the music, that’s a problem I can fix.
@@MiahsBug Yep gotta monitor levels. Like clips vs your voice. Or Intro/Outro etc Or certain tools etc. Just turn Gain down a lil
Thank you sir. And thanks for watching!
Just came across your build and I like what i see, I have been folowing doug bug for a couple years now and he also does great work. I haven't watched all your videos but I will get to them. I want to get into tig welding and I am looking to buy a tig welder. Are you happy with yours??. Keep up the great work enjoy watching you.
Thanks so much! Doug Bug really made this front end happen with all his well put together content. I love my tig welder. It’s the Vevor TIG200. I haven’t had any problems with it and was a good learning machine machine too. Not planning to upgrade anytime soon. A good gas lens kit is a good investment though.
These are such useful jacking units for a pretty low price. I like your mods. As for power lifting, make sure to never use the impact gun on it, the gears will spit their teeth very quickly. I sadly killed 2 very nice old jacks learning the hard way.
Really good tip Nathan! Thanks
Food for thought on the bottom of the foot, weld some beads across to act as a non-skid verse a slick/slippery foot.
I like that idea. Thanks!
Cork fell through the hole lol Nice work.
Kids gotta learn 😝
Myself wouldn’t have the lifting point out so far from main post, and no swivel base for me. But👍✌️
The articulating base helps it stay firmly planted while it’s lifting and changing angle. I 100% agree on the lift point. It should be as short as possible.
Do the main lower tubes extend inside the tunnel? looks like you cut holes in the closeout plate.
Yea they do. Good eye!
Loose the music... and I gota admit, I've never seen anyone weld on wood. I liked the part when you said you can use a cut off wheel and showed a flap disk. ;)
Yep, got some feedback on the music, 😊 I’ll fix that. Channel is a work in progress. You haven’t lived until you weld on wood lol. Also flap disk/cutoff wheel fail…yes. Keep the feedback coming!
I weld on wood all the time.... but my main shop is a wood shop.
@@autocrossratrod right on!
Welding on wood gives the work area a more relaxing smell but if you want a little fun weld on cardboard
@@mikehoncho3099 precisely, I only weld on rich mahogany for the relaxing aroma. 😂
rust sucks. Nice job. Hope you dont find any other bad patch jobs.
I hope not either. Fingers crossed 🤞
I like it. Subscribed. Was the paint on the jack powder coat?
Thanks for the sub! Yes it was. Very nice and thick powder coat. I was impressed.
@@MiahsBug I think I'll give this a whirl. Looks nice.
Good luck SpaceBall! You got this
You should have flipped the base plate upside down so it will dig into ground so it doesn’t slip when you use it off-road.
I was thinking of doing that or add some pegs that will grab. Will wanted to use it on concrete as well
👍With your time and materials what would you sell this jack for?
Probably around $300. Took me about 5 hours to build but if I built multiple it would be faster
If you want to strip the galvanized/ Zinc coating get some pool acid and set it in a bowl outside. When it quits bubbling rinse with water.
Really good tip! I have some of that acid. I will give it a try. Thanks!!!
What do you do with the acid when your done? Just water it down?
@@MiahsBug yep I save it till it gets ugly then I just pour it and flush with water.
@@norcoredneck 🔥💯🔥
anyone willing to spend more $, look at Brennans Garage Tauler Jack Kit. its pretty cool
Cool, I’ll check it out!
Wow, that’s a cool well thought out kit. It just needs a articulating foot
I see you are a Harbor Freight guy, as am I so when they start selling a dry-cut 14-inch metal saw, get it. I got a deal on an Evolution steel say and I could cut that tube in about the same time as your time laps.
Yes! It’s on my tool list. I actually cut that Timelapse down because the cut sucked so bad. That’s a makita saw blade too.
That’s why you take a piece of angle iron and bust up the edge of the cut off abrasive blade. Helps it to cut wuicker
@@jeffwelsh1185 is that true? Or you’re joking?
Ooh, time for an Evolution saw. ;) (I truly despise abrasive cutters.) Yes, do wear gloves and cover bare skin. Skin cancer is no fun, weldors! Nice little jack there.
I need one so bad. I hate my saw. It works just not great.
I like the idea. but when I make mine instead of a swivel foot I will weld 4 tabs onto the base and a leg attached with 2 permanent pins in back and 2 removable pins front that let a leg fold up for storage and tabs up higher to insert the pins to lock it in storage mode and lock down that is a bit farther out then the lifting point so it can not tip forward. cons not as good in uneven terrain pro more surface area to lift with.
I like it. That should work good. I saw a few versions like that online. 🔥
@@MiahsBug did you ever see the screw jack that Fireball tools made?
@@charlesflakusj.r6344 no I haven’t. I’ll check it out. Thanks
