Interesting. I thought it was a pulley bearing but I didn’t know a valve gasket cover could make a noise like that
PCV valve.. 10 quid !!

Valve Cover
Vacuum leak. Replace with genuine bmw valve cover & eccentric shaft sensor (they tend to go bad over age) do it or you will regret it. It will run like new again.
It’s the oil filter need a new one !
That’s your oil filter, it’s making this noise when’s it’s dirty or a cheap brand. Change your oil filter and it will go away.
Still doesn’t explain the rough idle
Could it have been a tensioner pulley ?
Mines doing this noise and I replaced tensioner today and nope still does tht same noise ONLY after the cars warmed up after driving or even at idle for after 10+ minutes it makes the noise Still.
My 2011 e92 328i is having the same problem. High pitch whistling, rough idle and engine rattling. "Service Engine" light came on and the codes are 2A7A & 2A87. BMW says it can be the VANOS Gear, solenoid, timing chain or guides. I'm more inclined towards the PCV valve though. Any ideas?

Yeah I’m fixing it right now. There were a bunch of things that all went down at once, here it goes: 1. PCV Diaphragm on the valve cover cracked. 2. VANOS Gears bolts sheared off and was barely hanging by one bolts. (BMW reissued the recall on this last week, you may wanna get that done with them) 3. Exhaust cam ledge was eaten up by the steel o-rings and was leaking oil pressure for the VANOS. Had to replace the entire ledge. 4. Exhaust side lifters were not holding oil pressure so had to replace them too. I’m finished working on the gear and redoing the intake and exhaust cams right now. You need a few special tools for the job but it’s not super hard to DIY.
hey man, i’ve literally had this exact noise come from my car last night when the engine was turned on. however this morning i turned the engine on and no noise was being made and every single warning light was not on, as if the car was normal again, did this happen to you too?

Got same noise right after oil change p b intake or they didn’t put the oil filter back together right. Open the oil cap while running if noise goes away it’s expensive vacuum. Pcv or bad filter/ install
Was your check engine light on?

my e39 520i has same sound like this, once i pulled the engine oil stick the engine died, does someone know whats the problem?

@@FrankieRomero-sg6jq you’re right, mostly it’s fine to lightly drive it since it’s probably just a vaccum leak. in my case though, the VANOS sprocket had almost come off, so if i had driven it for a couple more miles, my pistons would’ve crushed by valves.
I had this same problem on my E70 x5. Went to the dealer to get the PCV recall work done, thinking that would fix it. Nope…The problem still remained. Saw a post online that sometimes it happens with a cheap oil filter or a missing oil filter cage. Found out I was missing the cage in the oil filter housing. Bought a new cap with cage on Amazon for $11, haven’t had the problem since.
Same here, I have a 2011 328i that was making the exact same noise, come to find out, the oil filter cage wasn't replaced with the new oil filter. Replaced the oil filter and cage. Have no more whistling noise and the error code is gone.

The one who recorded this really recorded it from an awkward angle.
My 2008 528i was suffering from the same noise at random. In the end, it was the ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. Check that first. You can easily replace it yourself. I dealt with that disturbing noise for some time. Most times it would go away after restarting the car. I have a scanner but was not getting a code for what turned out to be the culprit until I replaced other parts and then finally got a code for that sensor, once. The thing about it was that I cleared the code and it wouldn’t come back even though the problem was still happening. Once I replaced the engine temperature sensor, the part was under $30, simple install, and problem solved.
So that sound it made at the end was coolant temp sensor

Aye so before you replace the valve cover check your oil filter cap and make sure it’s still got that nipple piece

Get an oil change will fix it something collapsed in the filter
For anyone experiencing this noise try change the Pcv membrame first. It’s a £20/$ part. If that doesn’t work change THEN change the valve cover.
And if that doesn’t work?
