Hogue OTF Knife FAILED Me!
มุมมอง 1.8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I bought this knife with high hopes, and my expectations were met for many months. Unfortunately it failed in a way I did not expect. This is not to bash Hogue, they make exceptional products. This is intended to be informative for people who may rely on a knife in a more serious situation.

Chainsaw Milling Maple Burl

Took some proactive steps to ward off cabin fever by getting into the woods and felling some timber. This was a silver maple burl that was turned into some slabs instead of firewood. The dog was not happy about us interrupting his sleep schedule.
Sharpen A File With VINEGAR!
มุมมอง 66K7 ปีที่แล้ว
If you think files are disposable, think again! Using common household white vinegar, you can sharpen your files that are too dull to be useful.

I am doing my second one now, and it's fairly course. It's been in there about 12 hours and I think it needs more. If it's fine it would be quicker, but an hour doesn't seem like much for such a weak acid! It has to actually eat away some of the steel.

I'm very dubious about this: if acid (vinegar) removed a layer of metal then surely it removes from the tips of the teeth as well? That would be more likely to blunt than sharpen? There are a LOT of these videos on the same supposed effect but none of them I have seen ever attempts to quantify how much better the files are after 'sharpening'.

You can de-rust and clean files, but you cannot sharpen them. Any edged tool gets dull over time. All the acetic acid in vinegar does is etch the steel.

This will happen on every otf if dinged the same way to block the blade. It did not fail you, you failed it. Just take a small file and carefully remove the edge of the ding and it will fire like new. And don't ding it on the opening. If you ding a liner hard enough it can block a normal folding knife from opening or closing in a similar way. If you ding your AR 15 in some spot it will fail too, same with AK 74 and many other systems. I have and use a lot of OTF knives and if you care for them they will care for you, like everything.

If you've got an old set that was actually made in Canada or the UK, keep that stuff in good condition, they simply don't make them like that anymore. Hell the angle files mostly come twisted.

Acid can, and does, sharpen files. This popular mechanics article covers a commercial "system" but it's an acid bath sharpening system nonetheless. They used a microscope to prove it worked. The Scientific Method really is a powerful tool! ;-) books.google.com/books?dq=Chemical+file+sharpening&hl=en&id=seMDAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA64&ots=Bse9zY6U2B&pg=PA64&sa=X&sig=_zpkvcVtRj51XcbcOImlNjJ-y3w&source=bl&ved=0ahUKEwibldXZ-YrQAhXBFZQKHW8cBGwQ6AEIPDAE#v=onepage&q=Chemical%20file%20sharpening&f=false

@@giottolaudo7672 The article you linked is essentially an ad for a cleaning kit. Did you read it? In don't think you understand what the scientific method means, either. First one starts with an observation which in turn leads to forming a hypothesis. That's steps one and two. The third step is to test the hypothesis and arrive at a theory - step four. The files used in the magazine test didn't look nearly as worn as the file in the video. It was shiny from all the wear before the vinegar and shiny after the vinegar. Acid won't magically repair tools. IMHE, soaking dulled files in acid does very little, almost nothing. Hence, the hypothesis is that acid has a very mild effect on sharpening files. No, I have not tested this in hopes of forming a theory.

@@giottolaudo7672 Words have meanings. The scientific method is a defined term - feel free to google it. I'm not sure why you're this upset over a link to an ad presented as an article that you posted and obviously did not read. Not my fault. Can't speak for the scientific community, but on a personal level I'd love to see your explanation of the scientific method. The folks who think the Earth is flat have their own take on the process. Please share your wisdom. BTW, I had no idea what 'gamma posturing.' meant, so I ran a quick google search. This was the most relevant result - "Gamma motor neurons control tone of muscle. In decerebrate rigidity, the reticulospinal tracts are cut, so the gamma motor neurons start firing excessively." Given the context, this makes no sense, either. Really, are you OK? Maybe call a friend? Edit: doesn't look like your block worked.

    • @freddietrollabyte3226

My old double cut bastard had so much rust on it it just slide like ice on mild steel... Guess I was bored... so I put 5% white vin in a pc of tubing and brushed the heck out of the file scraped it some with a deck screw and put it in for 5 hrs. took it out wire brushed and stuck it in Baking soda and dish soap water and soaked over night. Brushed again... detailed some with a screw and back in vin... soaked 5 hrs and wire brushed again and nuetalized in soda water again... then brushed and sprayed it with Knocker loose and let set for 3 hrs and wired brushed again... All total 8 hrs in vin... and over a hr of labor. LOL NOT COST EFFECTIVE BUT THE FILE IS 80% OF THE NEW SIMMONS I JUST BOUGHT FOR $17 and i am impressed... silly thing cuts and it looked almost like it had laid in a field for several years.

Just sharpened up a file the other day using heated vinegar. (It will work faster). Worked great! As a plus it forces a patina on the metal which will help prevent rusting, mine turned nearly black. I just made sure to lightly oil it afterwards. Thanks for the vid, gave me some good ideas.
