Intresting, we do this all the time , balance is a very over looked aspect in most wing chun schools they have very poor balance and because the balance is bad so is the footwork. In these videos alan is the heavier guy moving forward most of the time . Can we see a much heavier training partner using more resistance. Being allowed to do all the moving forwards so we can see the applications of stances and footwork whilst being forced back whilst remaining in the stand up style . Thank you ☯️

@alanorrwingchunacademy1302 yes sir , I do understand that, and I have watched your videos and know sone of your history. Thanks for your reply , I think I'm asking, could we see how you could just apply wing chun against that type of attack ot do we have to cross train to compensate? I've cross trained to compensate. I've done about 25 years of wing chun, other styles and grappling and only asking out of interest and content creation. Thank you .

There are so many situations. They are on my courses. The main thing is to understand body structure control., which is not a simple area. Then you must understand the attacks which are many. Wing Chun has good elbow positioning, so that is important, grip control, Cog, Timing and much more

Hi sifu, would you use more whipping or straight punches against a very tall opponent? I have shoulder subluxations in both shoulders due to loose ligaments, so I'm not sure how to deal with a tall opponent without the use of looping and whipping punches which could damage my shoulders. So far I've been trying to use straight punches to the head and whipping punches to the body, but I feel my offense is very limited as the angles of attack to my opponent's head isn't varied.

Very good video, beautifully shot! Great footage of HK too. I find your comments on John Kaufman and Nima King to be very interesting. I'm from the WSL lineage under Sifu Dwight Hennings but I have done some of Nima's online course. What you said about Kaufman not giving any drills for developing the CST way of internal power... From the little that I know, taigong+"rising up" is almost their most basic skill. There isn't a good way to regress that skill into smaller pieces that are easier to learn. So people kinda feel around in the dark until they get it. I liken it to teaching a kid to whistle. You can't exactly show how where the tongue goes, etc, so the kid has to experiment until he finally gets it. At least with whistling, you will get immediate feedback when you succeed. With the internal stuff, you get indirect feedback with partner drills and pressure tests. Regarding Nima's school's way of doing chisau, it seems to me that they want to use the bridge to connect to and control the opponent's centre. Other lineages might consider it chasing hands but it's their expression of chasing centre.

This exposé series of videos on internal wing chun that Sifu Alan has been posting throughout summer 2024 has - in my opinion - done more to bolster the art over the course of a few weeks than over 90% of the internet content on wing chun released over the past twenty years at a minimum. Without a doubt, I agree with Sifu Alan and can relate to development in layers, my notions can change and evolve quite drastically as I learn and grow as an individual. As a student, learning to understand the goals and purpose of the art in addition to skill development and critical thinking have all been crucial tools for my progress. Receiving information from an instructor, practicing, reflecting on progress, critiquing and adapting new behaviours over time is the reality of new skill acquisition, it is that simple and a lot of the internal crowd try to make it about some kind of unique forgotten technology that only they have. I’ve come to realize over the years being a student of the arts, that whether it is wing chun, boxing, jiujitsu, music, painting, writing, cooking, climbing, etc - they are all interrelated in that we approach them ecologically with problem solving, muscle dynamics and some kind of form with a baseline of principles and fundamentals with which to refer to and perhaps one day grow beyond of entirely as a practitioner. It is truly that simple, it is not some woo-woo ancient esoteric nonsense behind a pay-wall that the internal crowd likes to tout.

Thankyou for kindly sharing a solid demonstration and an articulate explanation of what internal training is and that we still need the external. I like that you call them obvious skill and hidden skill, it's a very good way of putting it especially for a western mind. I'll be honest and say I went too far down the rabbit hole of internal training and becoming a bit woo woo after doing what I can describe as a very external system of Wing Chun. So naturally it made sense to learn the internal stuff. But now I've realised you need both as a whole for it to work to it's full potential. As you mentioned about Yin Yang early in the video, I think it's really important for any practitioner who's unaware to fully understand this important principle 🙏

Totally agree about the hypnotism thing and exploiting people. That is what certain others are doing. Always love the way you train. However, I do have some different opinions on the pedagogy, that people can learn quicker when you roll just under them sometimes or at least pass through that for a min or so. The inexperienced still need the visual as they integrate it into the body. Can confirm you are very controlled and although there is a sound, it's a soft impact. On that other person we are not naming, I bet you he has injured people. And internally in a very significant way too<-conjecture, yes, but I've seen him hurt people with my own eyes.

With regards to the woo woo stuff, being one of the heavy critics of "chi bullshido" I've always said that the problem isn't "internal arts", it's not "chi use" nor "tai chi" itself, it's the specific claims of supposed abilities that don't comport with reality, every explaination you've shown in this series of videos was a true, sober explaination of how these skills are actually used! Great videos, more people should recognize how it actually works, common pseudo scientific super power claims hurt the reputation of kung fu, these videos have been a great service to chinese martial arts! Great work🙏💪

well, there are things that are really hard to explain, in terms of the body effects over the receiver - people usually think that the hopping is fake, but there are some energies that are much worse, like An - press down, that makes one's center of mass go down - not only taichi guys, but many japanese arts and other chinese internal arts have that - once you touch the guy with such dantien (or whatever) control, you feel like a 1000 kg stone was put in your arms and you can't resist but fall to the ground.
