A channel of exploration. Many of the videos are about building electronic kits. Many of them are inexpensive kits from Amazon and eBay, I put them together and describe the process, including tips and techniques and potential problem areas. I also evaluate how appropriate they may be for beginning builders. I also build many Eurorack (euro rack) music modules. By the way, I purchase all of these kits myself at retail prices.
I also occasionally disassemble things to see how they work or how well they're build.
And of course, other miscellaneous videos as the mood strikes me. NOTE: I am not an electronics expert, I'm a guy who has built electronics for nearly 60 years, but if you're looking for in-depth circuit analysis or design, I'm not that guy, there are many good channels for that.

C.K. builds a Velleman Educational LCD Oscilloscope Kit by Whadda
A very handy device from Whadda! A battery powered LCD oscilloscope. Not, of course, as full featured as a desktop model, but good for a quick look at signal presence without dragging your big scope out. Or, a good starter scope.
Traces are a little notchy, and the screen isn't huge, but works fine.
NOTE: The LCD screen connector is HARD to solder without bridging pins, I had to go back and rework my connections, and as you know I'm pretty danged experienced at SMD soldering. If you're doing this with a youngster give them lots of help and patience!
Good kit.

My station came with the screws for the solder holder. Hopefully yours was just a fluke. If that's the case, it doesn't speak highly of the quality control...
Probably just a one-off mistake, and it is still usable at least.
I really like your taking the time to build these kits and recording the construction and subsequent operation. This provides excellent information and is helpful in determining if I too would like to build the kit. There’s nothing better than actual experience and your videos provide this documentation nicely.
Thank you! I really try and approach these as realistically as possible, including my mistakes and impatience!
When I built mine, all the parts were there so was the full manual . It worked the first time . The only thing I regret is not building an amplifier for it, to have it work on a speaker. I still have and use the receiver and still pleased with it. The kit is great for a school project or for those who love Electronics.
I'm glad it worked for you! And yes, when it works it's a great kit. Thanks for stopping by!

That ribbon drove me nutty.
Also a Soldering Microscope maybe useful? I own one. Lots of SMD soldering.
My magnifying visor, which I always wear, works well. It’s not the seeing, it’s the tightness of these pins pitch and weak solder resist. Just takes time.
@ great. Oh Thanks for serving.
I have used De-solder Wick.
Always a good choice for most people. Except me, I have *never* been successful with solder wick, don’t know why, so my solder sucker tool is all I use.

I am always curious about what an oscilloscope does for an electrician. Looking at the wavelength? USD100 is not cheap BTW. Kudos.
It ends up being a versatile tool. Being able to see peak-to-peak voltages easily and the stability of a waveform for an electrician is pretty handy, for example. One of the main reasons I use one is to see really fast transient voltage changes that my meter wouldn't react fast enough to see, but I can see a quick spike in the waveform. And lots of other things, once you get one in your hands you'll find a lot of uses. Thanks for stopping by!

@@CKHaunI tried sending a link but it keeps getting deleted. Just type Duratool 40w desoldering pump on google.
Yes. I bought one of these to desolder the potentiometer on my speaker control pod and my PS5 controller. It does the job, but I have to give it a go many times. It's very frustrating, but it does its job. Maybe I will get the more expensive YiHua brand. Kudos. By the way, the slightly burnt tip is factory QC. Mine is also slightly burnt. FYI
Thanks for watching, and you’ll love the Yihua. As for the burn-in, some discoloration is expected for that, yes. But not staining where the hot barrel was set down on something, or melted portions of the power cord :)
I got the Yihua and it's been great so far. Takes a few minutes to heat up, but once it's at temperature, desoldering just takes seconds. It's so much more effective than a separate iron and pump.
Thanks for the video, C.K. I have the exact same one as that and also gave up using it because it was so poor. Waste of money. All the best.
You’re welcome, and thanks for stopping by. This one was frustrating because I really wanted to like it.
I also tried one from a local retailer, but it didn't have the force to suck anything. I suspect the piston spring. It was also dampened as you show in the video.
That's too bad! Just so you know, I just bought a similar device at half the price from Amazon, I'll give it a try this weekend and post the video.
No amp setting
Nope, no overcurrent protection.
I really appreciate this thorough unboxing, set up, and testing video, as well as the thorough review you left on Amazon. Buying with confidence.
Thank you! I think you'll like it, and thanks for stopping by!
Once your happy with the product always upgrade the power cable to a silicone heat resistance one- this could be a life saver!
That would work! Thanks for visiting!
you gotta plug out 1 into in 2
You can, and they talk about that (ala minmoog) but they advertise it as a "twin", two independent drives, for, say a stereo signal. So I ran it as twi different units as intended as well as doubling up..
What’s an identifier for that little clamp you use? I could use a couple of those.
The brand is "Wolfcraft", I picked up a set at Home Depot, here's a link to an assorted pack. Thanks for stopping by! www.homedepot.com/p/Wolfcraft-6-Piece-Hobby-Spring-Needle-Nose-and-Ratchet-Clamp-Set-3454404/304087106
I typed this in the other day, seems to have vanished. The clamp is a Wolfcraft product, I got ia set at Home Depo. Search for "Wolfcraft clamp" there and it should turn up.
Nice review, I have ordered it lot cheaper on Aliexpress - after a full test, I will upgrade the power cable to flex silicone high heat resistance one. I have also ordered a cheap duratool 40w sucker. I will be doing comparison.
I think you'll like it, I've found it to be a real time saver, it just sucks solder right up. Though it does take a while to get to operating temperature. The 40w would be interesting, I'll take a look at it.
@CKHaun I received the Duratool sucker; nozzle x1 only but larger 2mm diameter ( good for taken out larger components) but the good news are the nozzles of Yihua fits perfectly. Duratool has thicker power cable, stronger suction and heats up quicker(40w - 30% more power) For me Duratool wins. I think you should do a review, a comparison against Yihua.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I *think* I've got one of these on order, getting the brand name right on these bargain basement things is sometimes hard, but it was half the price of the Yihua so I think so. Should have a video on it up in a week or so.
@@CKHaun Many thanks :-)
Yikes, I just tried the one I bought (not duratool brand) and it came both used and cord damaged, and didn't work at all, will be sending it back. I'll still keep an eye out for the duratool one. Video up tomorrow (or today, if I'm not lazy).
Great information, thank you.
Thanks! And more than two years later it’s still producing power.
Looks like a handy unit. I generally just use a partially discharged 2032 battery to check if an LED works, which is fine for kits but if when you start building your own stuff this would be handy EDIT: I just finished assembling mine, was very happy to see it work when I hit the switch, lol. I thought my IC socket was missing pin 1, was just about to solder the IC directly to the board when I saw something shiny on the floor. It was the missing pin, popped it back in the socket and proceeded as usual. There's a QR code and a link on the back of the box that you can use to get a PDF copy of the assembly instructions and the users manual.
Yeah, I usually use my meter in continuity mode for a quick check. But if you're building something with 5 or more LEDs this is quicker to check them all before install than the meter. Though as I think about what you're doing, it is probably easier to squeeze the LED leads around a 2032 pretty quickly.
Edit reply - Great! Though I will say, if I dropped a socket pin on my workshop floor I would never ever be able to find it!
My model 948 won't go below 380°C
Which side, solder or de-solder? Just double-checked mine and I get a low of 200 dC for solder and 350 dC de-solder. They may have raised the minimum temperature at the factory based on customer service calls or simply because they wanted to.

Fence should be turned around so that the business end of the blade is under the shield
It's installed the way the instructions show (you may be able to see that in the shots of the brochure). If you flip it the other way (I just did) the entire rear half of the blade is completely exposed. The way it is installed per the pictures at least covers all the blade.
I had a run of bad luck, because I'm completely new to soldering. I read the Thonk page and it sounded beginner friendly, but I've built three modules and none are working. Pretty sure it's my fault. But I should have practiced the skill on something cheaper.
Sorry you've had some missteps! Yes, practicing will definitely help, if you'll search on mu channel you'll see quite a few solder practice kits that are usually US$5-10 on Amazon and give you a lot of practice, like this one. th-cam.com/video/uxPkzC3ZQCw/w-d-xo.html
turn the plastic cover over the blade, so the thick end is over the blade = then the blade cant shoot through the opening in middle :D
Not the worst idea for this thing :)
The saying is "More dollars than cents (sense)".
"Money" is less country-specific than "Dollars", hence the stylistic change. Multi-national!
Using the miter gauge backwards seems like a safety issue.
Not gonna argue about that. On this tiny guy it felt almost safer this way though since the miter gauge was off the front end of the unit for the 3 inch wood.
Here from your Amazon review. I'm making this for the cheesy part of my 4th wedding anniversary gift. Your video is saving me a lot of trial/error and time that i don't have thanks to my penchant for procrastination. Thank you! You are a gentleman and a scholar.
Thank you for the kind words! Glad it helped, and I certainly hope your anniversary is full of cheesy gifts and happiness!
It turns out this station has a number of multifunction settings. The 3 buttons across the bottom were set on the middle setting in your video (Ch 2). Had you used CH3 it would have defaulted to 450C & flow rate 9. At that setting it handles heavy ground plane & power MOSFETS for example. Even then I backed flow rate to 6 to get better heat. FR=17 will blow small smt parts right off the board. 😂 To set the default temps & FR on each CH setting you press & hold the righmost bottom button. The gear looking button saves. You have to learn their crazy system but once you do it isn't too bad & the product seems to work well. Ironically, I found your video looking for the how to. I enjoyed your video because you validated me! I ran into all the same problems you did, I just decoded more of the manual, because I spent more time with it. At least I wasn't alone. I appreciated your effort.
Thanks, and thanks for the details! I often *don't* look much at the manuals, even for these vids, because that's my usual user pattern, just open the box and start Turing things on. Kindathe Everyman approach to unboxing. That's also why I don't call these things I do "reviews", I'm just trying 'em, not reviewing them.
26:52 - it’s PCB material that is produced when the circuit board is made. A common material is FR-4 which is fiberglass reinforced resin.
Thanks for the identification!
Do you need to sauter it
Yes, you do need to solder this unit together.
Thanks
Could the microphone be blocked by the thing it's sitting on?
I don't *think* so, the wire "claws" keep the mic from going flat on the solder pad. I also picked it up to try. I'd try it again right now but I can't find the thing, that's the problem when you build two kits a week and usually 4 weeks before the video goes live, things get tossed into my "save to scrounge for parts" box and I can't find 'em....
@@CKHaun well just know this, You taught me something new. That surface mount soldering trick was cool. One side to begin with. I have never done much surface mount stuff. Thanks

Seems to be luck of the draw as to what specific parts one gets in these kits. Glad you got an upgraded iron!
18:38 24V? 820-Ohm resistor?... but what it doesn't tell you is that you will need about a 1Watt rated resistor though...
True enough.
Have been looking at the ready built REQ module but it doesn't seem to have half the parts youve got. Hows that work? Is the diy version completely unique & customisable. & A completly different beast?
Hmmm, no real idea. Do they use surface mount on the pre-built one? I suspect the answer is ‘no’, but the only thing I could think of.. And no, I did no customizations when ordering the kit, just picked what Thonk had. A mystery.
@@CKHaun that could be it ,would explain it been half inch thinner to! I've just seen some for sale at crazy prices with vintage capacitors fitted. The kits seems to be sold out anyways so doesn't make much difference. Was just curious. Would be fun to build though 🤔 Thanks for the reply 🙏

This pair of Gods Box filters, hi and low, are easy to build and relatively inexpensive. Also narrow. And some great resonance, th-cam.com/video/8DRGwZ0UcdY/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the video, C.K. Quite a decent iron, but let down by the stiff PVC cord. I agree...if the flux doesn't say 100% rosin, i stay away. Pretty sure the solder would be leaded, though, and at least you get a decent amount and not the silly little coil most give you. Plus it has a nice case. I definitely don't need yet another iron, though. Thanks.
Thanks! I'll definitely be keeping the case, but not the solder or the, um, flux? Honestly, the US$16 dollar one I did the other day was better. We'll see what the next one looks like.
