How to Make the Best of Bad Conditions!
I joined Floyd Morrison, previous owner of Triton Lures, for a morning fishing session. Floyd and I are virtually neighbors, both blessed to be residing at Kingsway Resort on the banks of the Gamtoos River.
Fishing has tuff recently with water temperatures being extremely high along the entire East Coast of South Africa. Gamtoos River has certainly not be spared and current water temperatures have simply resulted in very few fish venturing into the estuary.
A quick plan was hatched at the slipway. We would simply start at the mouth, on the start of the push tide, then fish a number of spots until we reach the 'Kraansies'. Targeting Bartail Flathead in the mouth area, Kob and Garrick at the 'Old Mouth' and 'Blue Drums'. Our final spot would see us fishing the 'Kraansies' where we hoped that the 8m depths would trap some cold waters at the bottom and keep some shoaling Kob in the area.
Our plan was flawed off the bat, as there was only a few degrees variance between the outgoing and incoming tide. In addition to the temp, the flat sea conditions did not force a strong pushing tide directly on the back of the recent Neap Tide.
Despite the conditions we enjoyed some great company, good laughs and a few average catches! Well, at least we never blanked! LoL

After two days of solid East Winds cooled the Eastern Cape coastline, I thought we might expect a much colder tide pushing into the Gamtoos River. Although it was a Neap Tide, I expected that the lower reaches of the system would still receive a nice dose of the cold coastal water. Our waters have been blistering hot, and it's been hard work getting a bite since mid-December! I was up at sunris...

During peak holiday season I took a gap from the shop and decided to venture up-river on the Gamtoos River. I had hoped to avoid the many holiday makers who were enjoying the fantastic conditions and fished a section of the river that I like to call "The Nursery". I had taken possession of a one-piece Okuma Raw 7ft rod and really wanted to get a fishing feel for the rod as already own a two-pie...
67cm Dusky Kob & Shoal of Young Garrick
มุมมอง 1.9Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I spent a morning and afternoon session fishing on the Gamtoos River in the Eastern Cape. Conditions are still tuff with water temperatures remining in the upper twenties! To add further strife the estuary is still pressured with the last of the festive season visitors!! Grunter on Top Water did just not happen as every regular spot I fish had passing boats upsetting the spooky Prawn Snorters. ...
50kg -166cm Dusky Kob on a 3/8oz Bucktail!

I was fishing on the Gamtooos River putting some footage together for a 'How to catch Summer Garrick' when this 166cm 50kg Dusky Kob (Mulloway) ate my Trophy Tail 3/8oz Bucktail. Fishing with a light setup, I was put to the test on one of the strongest fights I've had in a very long time. With some great help from Layton and his friend we managed to capture the entire experience including a stu...

What were you targeting??
@tiaandorfling399 Most likely would have been a Garrick, but great things happen when you least expect them to in fishing...a topwater Kob would have been MAGIC!! :-)
Awesome catch on the noodle stick .So much patience..well done mate
Cheers! The fight was intense, but the noodle stick held up!
Nice Kob! Great skill with reading the weather & water. Well done B.
Cheers Anthony! Glad you enjoyed the video!
What a kobbie. Love Kob
@MarkoGrobbelaar-d2j never thr MONSTER we Anglers also wish for, but it took a little string and gave a good account for itself with the cooler water! Onward and upwards!!
I call that fish a kob
@Squidman156 it's been tuff going with all the hot water since early Dec '24, but things are cooling down nicely! Holding thumbs for a few more! :-)
Lovely stretch of water Brett. Do you use a leader or straight braid to snap swivel? If so which knot do you use. Thanks
@nomoguff241 It will get better n better as the Eastern Cape drought breaks...pouring with rain again right now! :-) I use a leader, Awashima Classic Comp in 0.50, 0.60 or 0.70mm. It's a brilliant Flurocarbon Line and just over R100 for 100m! Brilliant stuff, knots like glue! The leader knot, Bob Sands, must be outside of the rods top guide and I make it my cast drop length. I make use of the Fishing Buddy Sml 'Paper Clip' lure Clip some folks call it the 'Paper Clip'. You can literally tow a car, they are that strong. Also, they allow great articulation to the lure. I'll put a link to a knot tutorial in a comment below. It's to a video tutorial in the Playlist section of my channel.

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated 👍
These are great quality bucktails. Highly recommended.
@josshall11 Thanks for that Joss! :-)
Looks like you've seen the light. That Stradic is magic
@robprideaux3279 I had to bring that one out of retirement, cost me R550 in 2nd hand parts and Gomexs handle to get it barely working! LoL New Okuma rod, waiting for Okuma to receive new stocks so I can appropriately pair that rod with a ISX Inspira or Ceymar HD!
So true Brett🐟
It was a great fishing session, filled great memories...and a couple of catches. As you well know it's all about the fishing for me and catches are a bonus!! :-)
Tied really well!
@AnxiousBaits Thanks buddy, appreciate the feedback. Want to do a few more bucktail uploads this year. It's ironic as I tie 10-20 just about every day! LoL
@AnxiousBaits I had a look at your lure creations. Great stuff, maybe I'll be be pitching one in the future! :-)
Lovely video, keep them coming
@lylemiller3166 Going to try a little more effort this year to get mor regular footage...also travel a little more to other waters!
Nice man...gurnard are game fighters and make full use of their flat heads to put up a good fight especially on light tackle...well done guys😎
@peterv5225 Thanks Peter, I have not forgotten our arrangement...will see you soon! You know my love for everything fishing and I'm determined to put the humble Flathead on a more desirable species listing. They are great fun to target, give a good scrap and actually an amazing species once you know a little about them! If the Ozzies can make a multi-million dollar industry around Flatheads...then the very least we can do is learn to appreciate them?
@@trophytails absolutely agreed👌
Hi Brett..some good fish and a nice video. Well done and keep posting🐟👍
Thanks Peter, glad you enjoyed it! 👍
Nice to see fishing is getting better, like that u put up descriptions of the fish tight lines Brett hope to catch u at gamtoos one day
@NeilMuller-gu5eo Thanks Neil, we had alot of fun, Floyd and I! It was his 1st Elec Ray and I ended up getting two shocks getting the Bucktail out! Many many laughs and giggles! :-)
Hi Brett, looks a bit windy. Going camping from the 7th, hope to get some nice fish. Keep it up.
@VisualBibleA2Z Very windy, West winds! We have good East winds blowing this week with the rains today and tomorrow. This will hopefully start cooling things down. Should all be prime for your trip on the 7th. I'm sure we met recently in the shop? Thanks for watching, it was no great catches...just a great days fishing with friends!! :-)
Hi, Brett. Beautiful day catching some nice fish. Awesome stuff. Tight Lines.
Thanks for watching William, it was a great day out on the water!
Another good upload what ur predictions for water temp for next week will it still be bathwater I want to go to gamtoos on Wednesday
@NeilMuller-gu5eo Thanks Neil! It should get better n better into next week. Have some good rains predicted for Monday with strong East winds Mon through Wed. If the conditions hold the coastal waters will def start cooling. We are heading towards a spring tide and that will def push some cooler water into the system and hopefully get some good fish into the estuary! Holding thumbs 👍!! :-)
Brett this is Eloff me and my dad bough like lures and stuff by your shop rember? om but how mutch does this cost I wanto buy one because our tackel boxes strap it broke so I wanto buy one but how mutch does this cost?
@Eloff_K pop me your email address and I'll get a quote off to you ASAP! :-)
Nice size there my brue. But you should go you should go to umgazana. I heard there catching span 20 kg gurnters and kobe. Also rock salmon
Yes, I've heard some great stories from Umgazana, it's definitely on my bucket list! You prob mean 20kg Kob, and not Grunter?
@trophytails I caught giant kob there go to the jetty. I heard you sell tackle i would love to buy some you got a link
Its so quiet
Hi Mark, if you meaning the river is so QT...then yes it's a stunning section of the river to spend time on. The fishing is not a good as down close to the sea, but the beauty and occasional catch makes up for that!! :-)
Looking at the Sure Strike website now..... is the same as the Quiver Stick? looks a bit different. Been battling with this warm water myself
Kyle it was a new release, possibly not on the brochure at that time. Think Leslie may have updated by now? Its actually the Supa Twitch 70 SS (Slow Sinking). Methinks the East winds and rain will finally cool things down now!
Nice to see u catching something in that hot water ur experience shows nice upload brett
Hi Neil, bit more perseverance pays off...video does not show the 1000's of casts! LoL
Hi Brett, what setup is that?
@ferriciogeorge6361 The Garrick tackle is a Sensation Tactical Spin 7ft MH with a Okuma Helios and a Sure Strike Top Water Bone White. The Kob setup was a Sensation Tiger Tamer 7"2 Hvy paired with a Okuma Ceymar HD 4000 and a Trophy Tails Leadhead and 6' Mermaid Tail Soft Plastic. Both reels spoiled with HMP 15lb Braid and Awas 0.60mm Classic Competition Leader.
Yeah..... that fish is dead brother
@franciscomorales6001 Nope I'm a BIG catch n release angler! In that warm water it took me 10min to revive. I have released hundreds of Kob in my life time and only ate my first Kob late 2024.
Best place in the world
For Sure!! Did plenty of shark fishing in the TKei, need to make the time to go explore the many estuaries now!
Hi, Brett. Camera man and commentator this time around 😀. Grats to Reyno on the nice fat Kob that seems nice and healthy and taking so much line. Tight Lines.
It was a great day, sometimes just being in and around the action...it's almost as good as doing the catching yourself! *WinK*
Hi, Brett. Grats on two nice Skipjacks. Nice to see local content. Nice to see them on video also. Do you mind listing your tackle that are featured and used on your channel like the overseas content creators? It helps to learn about the brand/s and with better informed purchases in the future to see them in action like this. Tight Lines and lots more fish for you 😃.
Thanks for the positive feedback William! Thats a great suggestion and I will certainly add some tackle info in the video description. I have recently added some tackle info in the video dialogue. I'm a great believer in using tackle that is fit for target species, purpose and budget rather than over ego! LoL
Where can I buy your lures?
@armandvermaak1901 Afternoon Armand, where are you based? Welcome to pop me a mail to trophytackleden@gmail.com and we can get the ball rolling? Regards, Brett
@ I’m in Jeffrey’s
@armandvermaak1901 .Trophy Tackle Den is in PE! LoL When you re next in town pop in and I'll sort you out! What are you after?
Hi mate nice catch What made you go with the orange colour
@AndrewKymantas Thanks Andrew, colours are not that important to me, I follow the 'rule of thumb' of bright colour lures in full light and darker colours in low light. For me, the lure action is of crucial importance! Far to many lure options catch catch fishermen only! LoL
@ ok cheers So fishing on sunrise in clean water And also dirty water what colour would you go?
Well done 👌
@@riaanbeer5345 Thanks!! :-)
Great upload hope to see more, I'm Neil from p.e jst wanne know if u don't have a boat how do u get 2 gamtoos mouth if only fished from big fish
Hey Neil, many of the spots are walkable you can walk from the Gamtoos Mouth resort and either walk along the beach to the mouth or bundu bash along the 'old mouth' to the main river. Its about a 2km walk.
Your vids never disappointed. Im such a fan off how u work your lures
Great, I'm glad you are enjoying. Yip...many hours standing next to my swimming pool to get a perfect whip! My neighbors must think I'm nuts! LoL :-)
@trophytails, lol. i also love testing out in the pool 😅
Shot Brett, another great video.👏 Wishing all at TTD a wonderful year and lots of tight lines.🎣
Many thanks Derrick, Our best wishes for you and yours as well!
Thanks for the honest feedback!
Thanks Ryan, glad you enjoyed it, appreciate you watching and giving some positive feedback! :-)
Agreed a lekka video man... and also informational...thanks Brett very enjoyable...you must stop it now😂👍
@peterv5225 let me know what day your good for this week Peter?
Lekker Old man! Great Video
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it! :-)
Nice short but informative video...thank you👍
Many thanks for the feedback Peter, I'm glad you found it informative!
RSA.??
Correct, Gamtoos River, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
If you go fishing enough it's bound to happen. Tight lines brother. Have a good 2025🫡
Hi James, Garrick are always an interesting catch, I would dare to say that 50%, if not more, are actually foul hooked in artificial lure fishing catches?
It's a foul hooked. I'm not impressed. That's no skill. 0-1
First douche of the new year here
Thats funny Mark...I think you are simply making a joke? You must be if you have caught more than a Garrick or three yourself... :-)
Its a catch Brett and it counts...lekka man....i normally catch my first fish the end of the new year😂
❤
Nice fish Brett well done👍
Was a nice way to end the December fishing!
mooi learly
Thanks Theron. Not big by any standards, but a good fish for the Gamtoos River system.
I will subscribe
@ramonapillay8794 Many thanks Ramona!!
That a very big fish I like it
🎣 Thanks for that info; to remember,!.. 🎣
Always worries me a bit watching anglers filming fish with a bunch of treble hooks hanging out of them. I've seen thrashing fish set them nicely into human flesh.
Been there and Def done that a few times in my life, but those were in the early days. Touch wood, but older and wiser now days! LoL
If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't be having any luck at all! I've fished that very spot with lures on the incoming tide and caught a cold!
@JOATMOFA good things take time...they say! LoL Keep on keeping on!!
December vibes.. definitely. It was good to see a few lads spinning today. Caught me X2 leries and X1 cobie. Was a chilled day.
@ferrosjewellers4558 Good fishing! Always a chilled day fishing 🎣!! :-)
