Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders - 1971-xx-xx (PART TWO) The Matrix, San Francisco CA. {SBD}
Here is Part 2 of the Jerry & Merl show I previously uploaded.
It is from the Matrix in SF in 1971
Although the sound is not pristine, I truly believe this show, inc (part 1: th-cam.com/video/bWJK-oB_vAo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0xLITUpmZ3GvXs9N ) and this part 2, show some of Garcia's best work!....both technically and sonically. Just enough tasty distortion while remaining true to his notes and interplay with the others.
*********
Get as much Jerry & Merl/Jerry Garcia And Friends/Legion of Mary/JGB/ from '71 to '74 as possible. You will hear so many variations, instruments, venues and it all plays a role.
Always start with Jerry and Howard Wales. Nicky Hopkins in '75 is a must, Martin and his sax, Tom Fogerty on guitar, Marty David replacing Kahn on occasion, Kreutzmann on drums, Armando Peraza-congas (Spring 1972), George Tickner-guitar (Spring 1973), Sarah Fulcher-vocals (Dec 1972-Oct 73), Will Scarlett-harmonica (1973)
**********
01 Blues Jam 8:48 (drop out at 5:23-:26) start at :30
02 Jam 24:04 ; starts at 9:56 ish
Nice open sound, great soundstage! Even with the compression sound.
Jerry played his Les Paul Double Cut this gig.
1971 sees Garcia changing guitars like no other year... Starts the year with the SG, then the Les Paul DC(TV Yellow)then the Turner Custom, The Guild S100 for a gig or two, Turner Custom,,, Nash Strat(Alligator),then the Guild S100 again, then the Les Paul Double Cut again, The Nash Strat again, a Sunburst Les Paul, then back on the Strat...
Jerry Garcia, Merl Saunders, Bill Vitt, John Kahn
[SBD Master Reel - Reel x2 - CD - wav - here]
Huge thanks to Will Boswell for the source and to Matt Smith for blessing us with a copy.
Props go to the original taper Peter Abrams as well as the man who made reels from those masters Peter Kafer.
Have a grate day! Turn on Your Lovelight and leave it on!
Peace, Mike

This one goes back and forth in time, as David Gans hosted a show in 2001 on KPFA's Grateful Dead Hour Marathon, having an interview with Ned Lagin about this special day as well as the recorded music of Ned's birthday back on March 17 - 1975 at Ace's studio. The very tasty music included a dream of a roaster including Jerry, Lagin, David Crosby, Phil, Billy and John Cipollina(on 1 tune). The m...
The Wiggly Compilation {CD-Rip}[1994] ~jambands/funk/blues rock/psychedelic~
มุมมอง 150ปีที่แล้ว
In a decade where we were absolutely spoiled with phenomenal jambands and the like from everywhere. In the mid 90's when The Homegrown Music Network was born, they would send out these big folded newspaper flyers (which I subscribed from Dupree's magazine) and that flyer had all the CD's available plus an ordering page; inexpensive CDs!. I was interested in their compilations at first. I believ...

Good day freakers, peakers and lovers of music. Here's a cracker of a soundcheck from the Winterland on Feb 22-1974. It runs around 43 minutes. As you'll read below, they are chunks missing and although these files were improved and edited at the studio there are flaws. Hopefully you can ride through them and still enjoy the soundcheck. All the best! Mike [tpace] Thank You For Dropping By. Like...

After a slightly unorganized start, the Biscuits proceed to play one of the nastiest Jigsaw's ever. This one is truly great. The jam sections are both as beautiful as they are intense. Stick with it, and God willing, you shall be moved...or at least get a good toe-tapping rhythm. As stated, after a little hesitancy, It's long and luscious without stalling, all with tremendous funk as the backbo...

1:02:00 they’re literally describing TH-cam
100% yes. Jerry & Bear were definitely friends / acquaintances with many of the interwebs earliest pioneers (Barlow for one) and minds around Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. The implementation of the internet is filled with the sweat and brain power of MANY Deadheads. The Well has been around since the mid 80's(?)(guessing) The following is from Jesse Jarnow’s book ''Heads'':: “The Bay Area was also the home of the Grateful Dead, who were themselves interested in both technology and the fandom emerging around them. Among their local fans were computer scientists at key sites of the internet's development, such as the University of California-Berkeley and Stanford. Some of the first email mailing lists, launched soon after email was invented and available only to those working in the computer science labs where the technology was under development, were for music fans. Paul Martin of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab began dead.dis@SAIL, for Dead fans in their lab. A fan himself, Martin and another at SAIL also collaborated to create a giant electronic repository of Grateful Dead lyrics, a collection that eventually made its way to the Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow, who was reportedly so impressed he jumped headlong into digital culture, where he remained an influential presence....”
Thank you!!!!!
I thought Jerry was sick at this time.
love Brent!
thanks for this! hard to find interviews of John Kahn. the perfect bassist for Jerrys side bands. John sure knew how to groove. I love Phil and all but Johns way of playing is also gripping and powerful in a unique way. of course Ron Tutt on drums always made for a good show! man oh man I'd give anything to have been able to travel around and see as many Jerrys shows as possible. such a groovy scene with such wonderful people to meet. in the 21st Century there really isn't anything like that anymore. very sad. there is no "Great American Adventure" left to do anymore.
I remember seeing JFJO at Club One. In the early days it seemed like they had 10 people on stage. I was extremely lucky to be from the same City as JFJO and be able to see them in the very early days.
they were great in the early days.
Seems like a lifetime ago. First WSP show for me 713/ and 7/14 /95 OKC Then my hometown Tulsa show I was hooked for life. Missed the sit and ski run. It was not till 97 I started driving all over this country to see Panic. Hate to sound like the old guy but this is the Panic I know and love. MH could rock you out slow it down and be close to country but most of all he melted, my face completely off numerous of times his sound his guitar just spoke to me and take me for a ride like no other has. Cheers and thanks for sharing.
peace ✌

A nice soft experience like heroin😂😢
I love this! These guys are SPUNIONS..... and.....incase you don't know......Fing geniuses!!!! Thanks man
😂the tools of their other trade. Lol. 🎶
who sucking the jolly rancher?
Love Jerry’s vision of VR and AI 30 years before its ascent is absolutely astounding. ‘Like all tools it cuts both ways.’
I got to stand next to the guitar tech for the whole show :) I was watching all the guitars being tuned, I got to talk to the tech about the guitars and see Mike step on all those pedals :) . I'll never forget it.
I saw these guys live in College Park,MD when this came out.I bought a copy of the cd from them that day since I was big into metal and prog rock back then. The band was pretty nice to chat with too.R.i.p. Planet x coffeehouse you will be missed.
Yeah threaten Jerry with getting clean and he’ll tell you all to go to hell
Thank You!❤❤❤
Somebody just opened a bag of chips.
Doritos dust all over Tiger 😁
Hi the interviewer sounds a lot like the singer songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker the slow friendly Texas vibe
The interesting thing about Jerry Garcia is that you don’t have to know who he is to like him. He had Universal appeal.
30:06 bro just predicted chat gpt, so ahead of his time
I think the guys song is weak, the fact he says it is a good song, is weak to me as well, maybe the had good farming friends. There singularities, Garcia would not go that way, they could have used some psychedelics.
who was the ironic shark attack on?
Awesome thanks good jamz
Thank you much, "Grateful"ly appreciated for sure. Later Peace
How can I watch/listen to Jerry and Armando Peraza play, per the above, in spring of 1972??
I have a Jerry/Merl show with him from Feb 16 1972 from the Keystone Berkeley with Peraza on congas. It's a pretty nice SBD. If you would like it, email me with your addy to skyscout@live.ca peace.
you might like this as well. it's later with Santana in 89, same style and great energy. th-cam.com/video/Q3TliKN9aOw/w-d-xo.html
Fun fact: in 1984 Oberheim wouldn’t give Geddy Lee of Rush a new synthesizer, so he put black tape over all the Oberheim labels on his synths. Same thing here with Brent’s Roland d50. Oberheim told Geddy “you can buy a new synth at the music store”. They were playing arenas at the time, and the Grateful Dead were playing stadiums. Idiots.
I got one of the photo cell roses used in the movie very prized piece of mine!
They kept reinventing songs over the years its like a new different band every few years
9:22 Weir strums "Let It Grow" jam.// 11:35 the start of a bliss jam.
Great interview. Never heard this one.
Damnit Jeff. ❤️🩹🏔️
26:35 Jerry had the vision of residency 40 years ago. Interesting.
The fist band residency was in 1944, Liberace played Las Vegas for 16 weeks of sold out show.
Boi I would run away
This interview could have been recorded yesterday, these guys were so well read and thinking about exactly the most relevant stuff to the future of humanity. I honestly wonder what Jerry would be thinking about the future now, he'd probably have something figured out no one else is really noticing, like he had here. Basically declaring how and why AI music will exist in 1990, incredible...
So great these guys were following Joseph Campbell. A true visionary.
🎛️🎚️🎚️🌹🎸💀🎚️🎚️🎛️
I’m gonna give Howard a call
Lesh is more 😅
Date? Pre hiatus shows?
yes, Feb 1974
I meant Winterland '74. Peace.
Phil is feeling it N.F.A 65-95!!!
The '81 show at NC was my favorite...
Damn digging it for sure
Found this CD in my collection going back to like 15 years surprise its on TH-cam its still fire 🎶
Never knew about Jerry’s constant change of guitars in 71. Seems like this could have lead him to start modifying guitars, like he did with Alligator (Nash Strat)
{Timings} 0:01 Blues Jam (starts at around 30 seconds in)(drop out at 5:23-:26) 9:56 Jam (at 23:40 a heavenly jam starts it's journey...not to be missed!)
Just love listening to Jerry...An American Treasure. RIP.
