Operas, operetta, lieder and songs sung by the incomparable Sir Thomas Allen.
Thomas Allen - The Folks Who Live on the Hill
Sir Thomas Allen sings 'The Folks Who Live on the Hill' by Jerome Kern.
One of Sir Tom's favourite songs and my favourite (and in my opinion, the most moving) rendition I've heard.

A rather rare documentary detailing the the daily schedule, life and work of Sir Thomas Allen in the years 1985/86, originally produced by Tyne Tees Television and probably broadcast on Channel 4 in 1988 as a supplement to the ROH 1988 production of 'Don Giovanni'. An exceptionally insightful documentary on the life and modest personality of one of Britain's greatest baritones.

One of my favorite baritones. Up there next to Prey. Thanks for posting this.
Really fine. From the heart and brain!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A real baritone th-cam.com/video/riBvb9WXqGs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=edleA1NBMmZ1Ja0H
I met him at the Met. He was devastatingly charming and handsome. And what a voice!
Amazing❤
I was on stage playing his guard (not a difficult role LOL) in the WNO's production in the early70s. Needless to say, Tom smashed it every night.
Their chemistry, acting and singing are electric!
Thomas in fantastic form 1n1977 and still at age 79. His unique voice, full of resonance and beauty is instantly recognisable. One of the greatest singers of all time so far. Along with others like John Shirley Quirke we will celebrate you forever
What is the piece he's singing at the beginning?? During the title scene?
It's Ford's aria "È sogno? O realtà?" from Verdi's Falstaff. Sir Tom has sung Ford a couple of times during his career.
@@cosifantutte90One of many people in Italian opera who ask whether they are dreaming. 😂
My favourite baritone. I saw him on stage many times. I particularly loved his Don Giovanni, Beckmesser and Wolfram. I wish I'd seen his Budd and Posa!
Almost too good to be true. !!! Warren
Haha...everybody's ❤❤❤ Sarah Fox but what planet are they on - haven't they noticed there's a baritone featured here - the wonderful Thomas Allen!
I actually noticed ONLY HIS beautiful baritone voice and I'm a fervent admire of Dmitri Hvorostovsky. A tru pleasure with Allen's velvety sound. 😊
Great Mozart great Thomas Allen
This is devastating. Seen this exquisite performance on many occasions and am devastated every time. Bless this great singer, and many congratulations to him on his fine career 🎶
"Devastating" is right. I can't think of any other operatic - or other - musical number that grabs me like this does: Right by the guts. Yes, there are other operatic About-To-Die numbers, but they're somehow glamorised and glossy....... Whereas this is raw pathos, in the proper sense of the word. Superb composition, superbly performed!
@@mehitabel1290 Well said. Billy is so honest and humble, and this aria is honest, humble and raw. He shows no anger towards his fate or the those who are taking his life. Real tragedy.
Did a Great sea symphony performance with slatkin. Glorious. Bettered only by one-- shimell and vernon handley. Glorious. And WOW. Bryn terfl does WOW to these songs.
Bravo Maestro
Two consummate artists. superb
Gran cantante, profesional, serio, metódico y siempre emocionante.
Без денег, кто с нами не пьёт
What happened to the video clip of this duet ?
Is that Sylvia McNair as Susanna?
Sir Thomas has played this role many times. I was intrigued to hear him ask for a physical description of the Countess and then from the description call her "substantial". Still, he's a gorgeous man with a commanding voice.
2:46
Wonderful singing , poor recording and the orchestra is a bit overpowering. I prefer the piano accompaniment.
Whither Must I Wander I like it
Songs of Travel are delightful. This last one is beautifully constructed. The older one becomes, the more these songs have personal meaning.
What a version! Sir Thomas Allen, one of the best singers alive
Absolutely amazing opening point
9:25 - great point
Stupendo
Wait, if Black's voice was fine until an hour ago. how did T Allen make the 11 hr flight from L.A. in time?
He didn't fly in from LA specifically to save the show, it was a coincidence that they called him up to see if he could sing Almaviva and he had arrived in London not long ago.
@@cosifantutte90 Ah, that makes more sense. How did you know that? They didn't say that in video, did they? He's the best Mozart Almaviva I know.
Bravissima!
Where can we find this English libretto?
Hello! The libretto is by Jeremy Sams and you can buy it from the Hal Leonard website.
He is really the best Valentin. noble voice and warm musicality. How beautiful he sings.
Excellent Tempo ! That is Mozart! Bravo
Best Avant de quitter ever.

This duet, makes me cry buckets
He's such a baller. What a majestic voice. I vote we make him emperor like he wants.
He returned to this piece in the role of Zeta at the Met, and he was hysterical. Pretty much stole the show from the younger folks.
Bravissimo
Bravo
He was a great Bariton
He still is a great baritone ;-)
@@cosifantutte90 Ok this is a long shot but if you see this message I'm wondering if you might know @interpreterr and how I might get in contact with them about their recording of Sir Thomas singing Pelleas
Bravo

Sublime!
Thank you for uploading this. I’ve always wondered what this piece was.
Welcome! Hope you enjoyed it :)
