Hi, I'm Albert, and in this channel I will cover chess in all its flavors and variety. I have been a player for over 30 years, and a chess writer with thousands of published articles to my name.
I am now returning to active play. So you will find a series called Study Chess with Me, in which I invite you to join me on the journey to share and be my study buddy. The internet is full of chess classes, but here I propose to actually study chess with you (tactics, strategy, endgames), and not lecture you. It will be friendly, honest, and instructive.
I also cover chess software such as ChessBase, Fritz, or the many other tools and programs, providing tutorials, guides, tips, how-tos, and much more.
If you have questions or requests, don't hesitate to share them.

Study Chess with Me: Endgame exercises with stunning solutions
Returning to the mission, I resume studying the endgame with Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual and am close to completing the refresher on the Opposition. I tackle the first exercises and even when failing I still enjoy the process. I also announce my return to competition shortly after noting the hiatus was much longer than I had thought.
What is 'Study Chess with me'?
Join me on this chess journey to improve our chess as we study chess together. I will study chess tactics, as well as chess strategy learning from Ludek Pachman's masterpiece, "Complete Chess Strategy", and studying endgames from Mark Dvoretsky in his magnum opus, "Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual".
I share my spontaneous comments and impressions as I work through it all, including live recorded failures and successes as I work the exercises. You are invited to study the same material at the same time, or to just put the video on while you study chess on your own, and I study alongside you.
Let's take our chess to the next level!

Do you need Mega database 25 to run the style report? I keep trying to run on Megadatabase 21 and it is not generating even with CB18
No, you don't, since I ran it on bases I created myself. Try converting to .2cbh. I don't know if this is a factor, but it's worth a try.
Thanks Sir
Great video, congratulations! But is it possible to create synchronized videos with ChessBase to directly upload them into the program, like with Chess Media System and FritzTrainer?
7:14 Interesting line here. After Kf4 the immediate Kf6 is not the move because of Rxf5+! and gxf5 stalemate. I assume Ra4+ followed by Kf6 is cleaner
Nice try, but it isn't stalemate. Hint: White's g-pawn can move.
@@chess_and_techAh, missed that
Good luck!
i bought the chessbase 18 m not able to install at all when i click the chessbase account to install it just taking me to techinical support page i wrote an email recieved a ticket number still no reply
Maybe I missed it, but did you at any point employ a system of "corresponding squares"? I wouldn't blame you if you didn't. It seems to be one of the most frequently mentioned yet poorly explained systems in endgame books. The best treatment I've found is Averbakh's Comprehensive Chess Endings (Volume 4): Pawn Endings.
That chapter was written by Mikhail Zinar.
I didn't, but this is also partly Dvoretsky's fault: neither the exercises or lessons ask this of the student. The focus has been converting distant opposition to close opposition and understanding how to use the distant opposition to outflank the opponent. Throw in the matter of knowing what squares you must not allow the enemy king to reach at any cost. The rest is just calculation. A lot of calculation.
@@ilanpi That's right!
I now have a negative impression of Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual since I looked up the K+Q vs K + R endgame in that book. It consists of the only draw, the basic Philidor position, then an analysis of a single position. It is therefore pretty much useless when trying to learn this difficult endgame, since it doesn't even mention the second rank and third rank defences required to understand what is going on.
No endgame book covers that endgame sufficiently, as far as I can tell. Not even Averbakh's book specifically devoted to Queen v. Rook. The best resource I have found for learning that endgame is a free chessable course by someone named Rookshelf.
@@goodspellr1057 The book Secrets of Pawnless Endings by John Nunn has a sizeable chapter on this. Derek Grimmell's TH-cam channel is devoted to this endgames with 34 videos.
@@ilanpi 34 videos? Good god. lol. It reminds me of Nunn's book called "Secrets of Rook Endings" which turned out to be hundreds of pages of dense lines devoted to R+P vs R. Here is my take on this topic: learn some key ideas and positions, and understand the core strategy. You have to ask yourself at what point is more time on this not better spent on other topics and aspects. In my particular case, I can assure you I try to make every second I spend count since I am all too aware of how many gaps in my knowledge base and skill set I need to fill or improve.
@@chess_and_tech I think that's a good approach. After all, you are highly unlikely to ever encounter Q vs.R in an actual game, and you might be lucky enough to face an opponent who knows that they are "lost" with rook and just resigns.
A friend of mine owns CB17 and curses it as it's prone to frequent crashes. Can anyone confirm that? or is it just his machine?
I won't say I've never had a crash, but frequent? Not here. The problem is that there are lots of ways to cause it with ChessBase without it being the fault of the program. A prime example is how the engine is set up. Too much RAM, or all the CPU cores, and it can destabilize the system as the engine hogs all the resources. I am not saying this is the culprit, I'm just illustrating what I meant.
@@chess_and_tech Thanks!! I am from the older ChessBase 11 and 12 generation and was thinking of upgrading but hearing the horror stories of my friend crashing CB17 even for the simplest task as searching a game (engine not even turned on yet). But I think it's safe to attribute it to external factors like his machine, programs that were running at the time, lack of RAM etc and not the fault of Chessbase itself. Looking forward to try CB 18.
Chessbase 18 + Stockfish 17💪
I cannot work the prep against an opponent function. I can get the name of the player. But when I say click on prep against white it no longer shows me the list of moves to work through the move tree as I did with CB16. I just get a board. Can anyone help?
I replied to you elsewhere, but have you tried making sure the base is converted to .2cbh? I am not saying this is the issue, but I know that some things don't work with the older .cbh
I did that conversion and it has not fixed it
First thing first: the best video about CB18 so far! Well done! I applaud ChessBase GmbH for major improvements and new functions. However, 3 service packs in 48h is not so nice. Additionally, I believe they missed an opportunity to integrate Compute Cluster due to their lack of understanding of cloud architecture or trying to keep ChessBase a closed shop.
Look, fixes and small details are not uncommon. I myself reported two small bugs, and CB17 has had a total of 28 updates, the 28th coming after CB18 was released, though that included added functionality like the Replay Trainer. I will refrain from the Engine Cloud as I don't use it much, but I will add that they do offer a free Cloud Engine (nothing super powerful) for CB18 buyers. I saw it listed in my engines as RemoteEngine, but haven't tried it yet. It is on my To-Do list.
I'm not disagreeing and I'm not the one who designed it. I just know that there are people who will scream bloody murder because a program uninstalled an older version without their consent.
I think you did a lousy review job. Yes, some new functionalities work good and are amazing but not to mention that the online player search does not work and not show it in this video. Or even showing an app that does not exist. It is an online webpage and the app is due in months as the developer mentions.
@@EquilibriaNL Well, I have news for you, the online player search works fine for me. I had even recorded it, but edited it out to not drag the overall video out too much. As to the app, yes and no. It is a web app and can be accessed from desktop and mobile alike. The mobile appearance and experience is quite different (including colors), and the settings even has a button that automatically installs it as a clickable app from your mobile apps. Note, this not even the first app I use like this. BGA (Board Game Arena) is the same. I reserved these details for a future video dedicated to it. Cheers.
@ thank you for your answer. I would be very interested to see a working online player search. So far i haven’t seen one. Some parts as in 10 or so teams can be looked up and then get the message either that too many results cannot be displayed or that the server is not available. I have seen forums online that others experience the same. I have CB18 installed on 2 machines and for some reason 1 machine can do an update and the other machine does not see the new update. The cloud engine is working wonderfully. So i believe that your review could be better. I am glad though that i can experience your thoughts.
@@EquilibriaNL I did not use the Search Lichess Teams and Clubs button within the Players tab, which is what you are describing. I used the Search Online Player on the Home screen. I searched my nickname in both Chess.com (AmericanCarioca) and Lichess, and it produced all my games without hesitation. I left a more detailed exploration, as I mentioned, for a future video dedicated to it.
@@chess_and_techi would love to see it. I noticed the old dossier is not working anymore.
@@chess_and_techwhen you identify a player and click prep against white does it bring up the moves list like in CB16? Mine doesn’t, I just get a board so I can’t prepare properly
Nice overview! Silly question... How did you manage to get the Chessbase products you own to show up in the "My databases" folder view in Chessbase? Did you simply install them into that folder (or copy manually into it), or is there another trick? I've a bunch Fritztrainer products and other databases from Chessbase, during installation I'm asked for the top-level Chessbase documents folder, afterwards they show up under "Purchased Data" folder in the folders tree, so I need to navigate between folders to find them. Ideally, I'd want the CB products I use the most to be readily available next to my work database and other personal databases.
Just drag and drop an icon of a base to My Databases. Though in this particular case it appeared automatically when I installed it.
@@chess_and_tech well, sometimes. It's a bug and reported long time ago. Fritztrainer don't show up
@@henryschroer I can only comment on CB17 and 18 now. I would need to re-install an older version to really test, but as a rule I cannot imagine it being an issue. Even if it does not appear automatically, you can create an icon linked to the main base (.CBH) in My Databases or if elsewhere, drag and drop it after. I know for a fact my Fritztrainers have been accessed from My Databases for many years.
The question is not should you buy it, but can you afford it.
That's true of any item or service being reviewed. I have been flirting with the idea of an e-ink Android device for chess, and while I have a small list of excellent and attractive candidates thanks to the reviews, the $300-$500 pricetags mean choices and timing to get one.
SCIDvsPC (or MAC or Linux) is free and there are free databases for it with most of the games, just none of the comments or annotations.
@@christmackey I have SCID and ChessX on my PC; both have their good and bad qualities. Most of the functions available in ChessBase I will never use, it is overkill for a casual noob such as myself.
I think that this version of chessbase is the ultimate must have tool, lichess and chess databases from users+ player and blunder report+ better search, it dont need mothing more, is just perfect.
These new features introduced by chessbase18 were not done well, but some of the performances looked very attractive, but after they were actually used, the results were not satisfactory. They should listen to the opinions of users, especially the opinions of middle and low level chess players or parents, and not close the door by themselves.
Thanks for this video, after viewing it, I'll definitely buy it.
Should I keep the previous versions of Chessbase or delete them? Thank you for your videos.
There is no need to keep multiple versions of ChessBase installed on your computer. You can safely delete any older ones you have.
nice glitch of CB installation routine. It's not upgrading, but parallel installation. Uninstall previous version plus you need manually remove icons and such from Start Menu
@henryschroer That depends on what you call a glitch. Believe it or not some people are attached to older versions for whatever reason. And I'm not speaking about Chessbase. I recently was given an offer I couldn't refuse to get the full v2 suite of Affinity software for $30. I only owned one of the programs of the suite, Affinity Designer v1, which I used for my videos and thumbnails among other things. However, when I finished installing this new version I discovered that the older version was still there as well. So I don't think it's a bug, I think it's simply letting the user do as they choose.
@@chess_and_tech it depends on the software architecture and the upgrade process. A simple "Do you want to keep the previous version" could do the job. Thanks for your reply and reading!
How did u get your hands on torch v3?
I did the bulk of its testing for one of the engine ratings lists.

Does chessbase have the ability to save repertoire and spaced repetition like in chessbook? That is, daily repetitions of the saved opening repertoire are proposed. If you correctly indicate the moves, the next linerepetition is postponed much further in time, and if you make a mistake, the next repetition of a given variant will be scheduled faster. Another useful feature on chessbook is suggesting where we have the biggest gap in our repertoire, and this is done based on the frequency of moves in the game database. How can I find and use this functionality in chessbase?
Thank you. I have had ChessBase for years, but use it very little, as I find it quite an unintuitive software & hard to use for that reason. Simple things like importing pgn files into it from folders on PC seem more complicated than making a database in the program & dragging_dropping files from folder into the DB? Can it make an EXACT search of a database for exact moves without transpositions? This is a useful function to have (at least a function I would find useful) that seems hidden, if it even exists!? The help menus on all ChessBase products are very sketchy & not very helpful & contacting their support is not very helpful either. It is undoubtedly packed with features, but there is a steep learning curve with it & this takes time away from your chess study & play. Thank you for helping to explain it clearly.
brother i have a problem with CB Reader 17..... while opening a game it's showing red arrows and again for wrong side.....engine is neither running nor my pc is connected to internet..... can u help?
Isn’t there one more function where you can access the lichess database from CB 18?
@@pathikd Chessbase 18 will be bringing a number of interesting new features but I wouldn't include them as part of a tutorial teaching new users who are just getting started. But be sure I will include it in my overview of Chessbase 18 as well as a dedicated video when it comes out.
@ great thank you!
What a nice coincidence. I just downloaded CB 17, looked for guide for it, and here is fresh video about it
can you do a full review of CB 18 and MEGA 2025.
I can and will give an overview of it and the features that stand out, but a review would be disingenuous on my part. It goes without saying that I have been a fan of ChessBase since forever, so I can't 'review' it since it will inevitably have a positive outcome. Fair? I will add this leak: there is going to be a sale *very* soon, so if you are pining for it, then definitely keep a look out for it.
That was a good summary and even though I use the product fairly frequently I had forgotten about the auto engine analysis of an entire game. I recently came back to chess like you and I first used Chessbase along with some chessable courses to help create my repertoires. I then used it to find historic model games on those lines and finally every week I pull out the games from TWIC pertaining to my repertoire and play through as many as time permits.
Can you do videos on chess books. Explaining each topic step by step?
If you mean reviews of books that I like or that I recommend then I do actually plan this but if you mean actually studying or explaining content from books that you might want to look at my Study Chess with Me series.
Can you do a video on chess topics from chess books. Like from books Like Sillmans endgame manual?
Do you mean reviews of books?
i wish they brought a feature where it annotates complete game explaining each and every move like decodechess which will help ametuer players to study master games
Agree. With the advent of AI, Machine Learning, and Human language ChatGPT, something like what Decodechess offers, even in simpler terms, could be a big hit for CB. Competitive advantages in business are not permanent. They have to be constantly created and be first in the industry. That is why I have every single edition of CB since CB 8! So far, I am a happy customer. Keep on keeping!
Thank you for this clear, organized, and useful video!
Thank you for presenting Pachman! 🙏👌👌👌💪
Gracias por compartir...esperaré el proximo video relacionado con mantener el alfil bueno para el avance a d5 ....muy interesante
At 11:07, you give white moves pawn to h7, but that allows black Bc2 capturing that pawn and covering the queening square. This requires further analysis.
You're right. Instead of Ke4, correct was Ke3. Black's problems remain the same, and ...Ke5 is no more possible than ...Kg5 because of the very same h7 threat.
This is great. I looked at signing up to Claude AI and it wants a lot of personal info which I'm wary of giving out. I tried to paste the text file (not just 'paste', but 'paste, keep text only') into MS Word (I'm using 365, so it's probably the latest version). Then Pressing Review - Translate, the text kept the formatting and after copying, ChessBase had the file already open as in your Claude AI example. The translation of move 5 as per the video is: "Rubinstein, who already knew my analysis, chooses the continuation that Bogoljubow had taken against me in one of the earlier rounds. Black, however, now develops his queen's bishop and frees himself from all difficulties." Not bad. perhaps not as brilliant as Claude AI, but certainly 90%+ and any chess player will get the sense. Additionally, in ChessBase, I always have the figurine notation in use. By 'paste, keep text only' the text is done as per your file and the resulting opened game board is in figurine. What didn't work so well was ChessBase failing to read the game header properly which, given there appear to be no changes, seems strange.
The most underrated chess channel...thanks alot for your contents ❤❤
Greetings! I am the player on the business end of Albert's brilliant rook sac! Here is how it felt on my end. After a dozen games or so with Albert and not winning any, I felt pretty good about this one until queen h4. I thought I was holding me own and was pretty happy about that. And then my position collapsed faster than I think I've ever experience before!! Here is what I said to Albert about the game - "I realized I was in trouble after you played queen h4. I didn't see it coming at all, but I figured there is no way you blundered and just gave up such an obvious exchange and so starting to try to figure out what you were up to. I saw some of the lines you talked about, or at least part of them. Enough to see there was a very imminent mating threat from the queen, which of course is way I didn't take the rook. At that point, I thought I might still be able to wiggle out of the immediate problem, but realized that my position was quickly becoming so packed in that you had essentially won, even though we were even in material. But, as you said in the video, when I played queen b7 is when I realized this position was much worse than I had thought"
I love your channel. Very helpful advice. I have chessbase 17 but rarely use it since I find it so complicated.
nice. I used to do postal chess years ago, but gave it up because of computers.
I cannot say i did it before, but I do know the idea of just churning my computer days on end to have it play against someone else doing the same has no appeal to me.
@@chess_and_tech I would not think so, what would be the point? It is good that you have a friend where you can play games together in that format.
This channel is the perfect example for "a great niche find".
Your kind words are much appreciated.
Just wanted to say I appreciate your videos which appear well researched and presented. As someone coming back into chess in my 50s after a long hiatus since the very early 2000s so much has changed due to technology. Hoping I can get back to 2100+ and your videos are helping :)
@@Ireniicus Thanks! :-)
Hey man, I’m studying chess a lot myself right now. I love the concept of studying with me videos which I haven’t ever seen anywhere else on TH-cam. I hope you’ll keep making them!
I was taught the opposition with this simple position: White Ka1, Rc1 and Black Ka8. White to play and win by moving the rook only once.
Actually, that is one of the positions that Dvoretsky teaches in his manual. I don't know if it is part of the refresher or I skipped over it, but I suspect the former and it will be coming up soon enough. I thought Dvoretsky was digging up some obscure position to show, but with your feedback I can see it is part of traditional chess education in some places. Thanks for sharing.
@@chess_and_tech I didn't know that, thanks. It's also in the book "Amateur to IM" by Jonathan Hawkins.
Thanks. always good to review opposition
