Running in Japan
Japan
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 25 มิ.ย. 2024
Hello everyone! I'm an American former high school cross country and track and field runner who also ran a bit in the military. Now living in Tokyo, Japan, I began running again at 41 years of age after an 18-year hiatus from the sport. I ran my first half marathon, and now I'm wondering where my journey will take me next. This is my story-a writing in progress.

Is It OK To Split Up My Long Runs?

They (the internet) say, "Injury-prone runners often find that splitting up long runs reduces the risk of injuries because you build in more recovery time and accumulate less fatigue and microscopic damage to your bones, muscles, joints, and connective tissues." So, for the first time today, I tried splitting my long run into two shorter runs. Reddit users have something else to say about split...

How many miles have you done on Superblast at the time of this video ?
189.
@RunningInJapan ohhh damn 😳 I don't know how you run in them, I ran in mine 410+ miles and mine don't look as bad as yours 😂
I appreciate you showing the outsole. The heel of my outsole on one side started ripping at 10 miles (yes, 10 miles) of owning them and every review I’ve seen shows zero wear there. While that is absolutely unacceptable for any shoe, it hasn’t affected performance and everything else with the shoe has been great for me.
@ there may be another factor at play here. It might be the way I run in them, but there’s a small possibility for another reason. There was a time where after each run, I would run the bottom under a garage sink or a sink, hot water, and with a soft brush, brush debris off the bottom. I would soap the upper as well, rinse, and then I place them outside to dry. Is it unlikely that’s the reason they’re worn on the same heel spot on both shoes, yes. But factoring in that hot water, brushing, sun drying, maybe I did weaken material/foam. I can’t discount it entirely.
@ thanks for sharing, now I’m glad to know it just isn’t me. Literally seconds before replying to your comment, I just replied to someone else about the wear on my soles. Look for it.

Got mine Adios pro 4 and superblast 2 ❤
@@6LJOE good combination. Happy with what you got obviously, but are there any other shoes you are eying to pick up in the future?
@@RunningInJapan probably waiting for hoka mach x3 next
Due to PF and having issues with my heels while Vaporfly3 during Stockholm mrathon early June 2024, I Googled "best nonplated shoe". The best option that came up was Novablast 4. Then I ran a much better marathon in them just 4 weeks after Stockholm. I ran faster and no issues at all, even being able to run a normal week thereafter. So sure I was eager to continue along the Asics road then, my curiosity was raised! 2 days later I happened to visit my fav running shop 1 or 2 days after launch day of Superblast2, my Lucky day😅. I was not aware upon the worldwide hype at that point, at least not in Norway. But quite soon I realized! So, all you say is correct about these shoes, I'm closing up to 600 km in mine, barely showing any tear or wear. Also ran a 1/2 marathon in them early September, using them for recoveryruns, longruns, temporuns etc, they're really versatile. They got restocked in November, got myself a new pair in lilla/silver colors, saving these up for next year. And just before Christmas I got my first pair of Edge from Asics. 2025 may just come, I'm more than ready😂. Keep it up down in Japan!
@@MusicChristo thanks for sharing your story. I wish I had bought more pairs at launch-a backup for me and then a third pair to sell on the secondary market. Do you think you’ll give the Novablast 5 a go anytime soon?
@RunningInJapan Haha, bought roughly 10 pairs this year, and with so many in rotation it will take a while until I really "need" more. But you think they are That good?
Looking forward to your review of all three. They would make a great 3 shoe training rotation. Enjoy the dinner and Merry Christmas.
Thank you. I was looking forward to starting to run in them today. The Christmas dinner was too good. I spent most of today sleeping. I will start to review them from tomorrow.
Nice Christmas gift for yourself😂
Thank you, they are. I'm going to enjoy all three in good health and spirits. I hope you had a Merry Christmas.

Finally found someone that had the same experience with me on Superblast 2 sizing. My usual size is US12, but somehow when I tried US12 SB2 it felt a touch tighter. Ordered US12,5 and when I took of the insole, it was very similar length with my US12 Novablast 5. Glad I went up half a size bigger.

Could'nt agree more! Got my second pair today, in a lovely purple/lilla colour, with texted laces claiming "Never give up"😅🤩
I found them to be true to size, both pairs😅. 44 that is with European sizing! Fab shoes for the feet🤩
I don’t know how to get a hold of the superblast2. Really hard to find
1 full size up ,or half a size up? On my nimbus 16s i wear 11 2E..
Half a size up. But if your Nimbus fit well, I would stick with that size. I haven't watched this video since I made it, but brands have different sizing. I wear a specific size Nike (9 ½), but I wear half a size up from that in ASICS because they wear smaller than Nike.
I went half a size down, which is Perfect for me idk
I had never tried the superblast line until recently. Took 100 km to start liking it for me. Previously used the vomero. Now I get it though. If you let the shoe do its thing and tick the legs over it’s an incredible shoe. I would say it’s a Swiss Army knife for running. If you just got 1 shoe for training and even racing if you are non elite it’s fine too. It does everything at a very good level.
Preciate you sharing your thoughts on this shoe. I have my eye on it but can’t justify the price right now. How would you rate the stability on a scale of 1 to 10? Do you suppose a wide fit would be ok for a normal foot if it’s on sale?
@@TheSoulProponent sorry for the two week late reply. It’s been a busy life, and I flew back to the US for a significant time before returning to Japan just last weekend. Answering your questions. I haven’t watched this video since I made it, so I may/may not have mentioned I bought these shoes on sale. It was a significant discount, like 40%. The stability is really good I’d give them a 7 or 8. The shoe as a whole, if you bought them retail I’d rate them a 6, if you can buy them on sale as I have, I’d rate them a 7 for the price for value. Wide fit is perfectly fine for a normal foot size. It will remain secure enough on your feet and allow some wiggle room for comfort.
Decent selection of older model training shorts and singlets there?
@@davidrogers7787 yes. I bought two pairs of shorts from there. I’ve shown them off in another Nike video I have up on the channel.
I run super casually and sometimes sprints, should I get these or the novablast 4s?
@@TheEternalEast definitely get these. The toe has a little more of a roll to it meaning you can probably move slightly faster and more nimble in these than the NOVABLAST 4.
@@RunningInJapan Thanks!
Well done and God bless. Cheers.
Well done and God bless. Cheers.
Lots of love from Pakistan
Is it protective for forefoot striker?
@@mirmohsanalitalpur5884 I don’t think it is padded enough in the front, your toes would probably start to hurt. If you’re only doing thirty minute runs in these, maybe okay. If you’re doing long runs and are a forefoot striker, I’d look for something else.
@@RunningInJapan @RunningInJapan Yes Same things happens in my peg 40. Please give me option for long run shoe for 1 hour run
Nimbus 25 or any other shoes please advise for forefoot striker?
Will do👍 thanks for the heads up mate
A lot can happen in a 100 years
I can’t find these in the US. Will there be another run of them going out to retailers
Subbed, like the way your present, passion with peace, 🙏🏻❤️
Can you still find those in Japan? How could I buy one from here?
@@snowwalker9999 sold out. I’d recommend checking the ASICS website periodically, or use eBay or Mercari (and a handling service).
A similar shoe to Novablast 4 is also Puma Velocity Nitro 3. That’s how they felt under my feet. Very similar performance daily trainer.
@@snowwalker9999 I’ll definitely have a look at those. Thanks for sharing.
I usually wear a US size 10. My novablast 4 - sized 10 has just a touch too much room in the front. My foot can fit into a US size 9.5 novablast 4, but it is snug in a good way, but I don’t think it’s a great idea if I were to wear a thicker sock. So in my case, I wouldn’t size up on the superblast 2. Does that make sense and would you agree? *somewhere in the middle of a US 9.5 and a US 10 would be best for me. I’m talking millimeters.
A true-to-size Novablast 4 was just too small for me. I'm not sure you're prepared to look at ugly toes, but I've made a video about how they gave me runners toe: th-cam.com/video/ivM0y6LTNLM/w-d-xo.html I'm still recovering from that 2 1/2 months on. I'd rather have a shoe be too big than too small. I don't trust "snug" because feet expand when running (feet expand from just walking around all day too), you need room to literally grow into while on the run. This is from ASICS own website per them: "The further you run the more your foot will naturally expand. This means it's wise to have just a little extra room (about a thumb's width) between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. With this in mind, your running shoe should be around a half size larger than the shoe size you usually get." My best recommendation is this. If you're buying shoes out of a brick and mortar store, naturally try them on before you buy. If ordering online, you should definitely order two pairs, one in the size you think you wear and one size up. Try them on at home and send back the one which was more ill-fitted. You can only try them on and walk around the house in them, because once you take them out for a single run, no matter how short, you won't be able to return them. So it's very important to get it right. It was a freak accident how I got it wrong with the Novablast 4. You'd just have to watch the video.
@@RunningInJapan Thabk you very much. I’ll heed that advice.
I don't comment on videos mate, in fact ever. But I only watched this video of yours and something about the way you speak is very endearing haha. Hope I see you pop up more
I've been debating on picking these up, but I wasn't a huge fan of the first Superblast or the Novablast 3. I kinda prefer Asics Speed line over the Blast (the Evoride Speed was one of my favorite shoes of last year.) The new Magic Speed 4 almost perfect.
@@Randmness Ooo, you’re a hard sell. You’ve never tried the Novablast 4 in which the consensus is they’re slightly better than the 3. But you’ve tried the Superblast, which is better than the Novablast 3 & 4, but you didn’t like it. The thing is with all the shoes I’ve named, they’re made to be all-around, do-it-all shoes. Sounds like you’re better off with multiple shoes for dedicated purposes: one for speed, one for long run comfort, one for race day, etc.
Man....small world. Just discovered your channel and thought you looked familiar. I ran the 2024 Tokyo Marathon earlier this year, and was one of the marathoners you took a photo of. Best of luck with your journey!
Respect. It is a small world, and if not for you guys coming through, I would never have been inspired to run again. I need to do a whole video about that (I need to rewatch this one to see what I said in it).
Yes mate, totally agree - they are my favourite shoe of all time. Beating the Superblast 1, which was my previous favourite.
I don’t understand why they are taking so long to release new colorways. Plus they ruined the white/grey prototype model with a pointless strip of blue 🤦🏻♂️ typical asics behavior.
@@SemiAI-.- they do that purposely to keep desire and demand high.
Did you manage to get them? What do you think about the shoes? Are you still searching and waiting to get a pair? Or is ASICS a running brand you really don't care about? Sound off in the comments. I really want to hear from you.
Double-tap this video! Comment and let me know what you would like to see next.
I could never get my hands on a pair. I stayed up until midnight to order but they told me they were all sold out. I wanted one that color way
I'm sorry to hear that. Just keep checking back on the website periodically about every half a month. They'll come back in eventually. I think they know these shoes are a cash cow for them. They'll put out more.
This is an excellent review. Very good camera work as previously mentioned here. I love the Vomero’s and have a pair myself. Keep on putting your great content out there. Now subscribed to the channel.
Thank you sir. ASICS Superblast 2 review is currently uploading as we speak, with me editing the video thumbnail now.
Hi, what size would a UK 12 be in Japan? I have a relative travelling out tomorrow and want them to get me a pair!
@@AWright300 UK 12 is Japan 30.5 cm at ASICS. I wish him luck and hope they’re not sold out. That’s actually a pretty big shoe size so he may luck up in getting a pair.
Up size or true size?
@@imanloxs7667 100% up size. If you don’t, you’ll be asking for trouble. Believe me when I say that.
@@RunningInJapan Depends on your feet. You absolutely cannot generalize that!
@@philipppuchner1115 but can’t I though? If I’ve been wearing one size across brands in sports shoes for over thirty years and now after thirty years they are too small, especially with the expansion of feet from running, logic is telling me I can generalize that for the most part. It’s just advice and my recommendation is all it is. You can take it or don’t, like food. But I don’t want to hear a single person come crying to me in the comments talking about, “They’re too small!”
@@RunningInJapan No ;) I have a way longer right foot which is EU 45,5 or, if translated from UK/US/Whatever sizes, between EU 45 (rounded down) and EU 46 (rounded up). In an old pair of Asics GT-2000 (i think #4) the EU 45 was definately(!) too small and the EU 46 was it, but also subjectively just barely. Fast forward centuries, had run maybe a few times a year with newer GT-2000 (#9 i think) EU 46, I have the Novablast 4 TR. In EU 46, just because. Also Noosa Tri 15 in EU 45. Also a new pair of Novablast 2 from a second hand platform (but new! unused!) in EU 46 per chance and that also fit. After then trying on the Kayano Lite 3, Superblast, Nimbus 26 in EU 45 and EU 46, I went for the smaller EU 45! I HATE swimming in the shoes, "boats"! I have very low volume feet, at most medium width and a very low volume heel, therefore in climbing shoes, I always have to go half size smaller to get a good fit. My feet are for like La Sportiva climbing shoes - without the often way too fat heels. My point i want to come to: Way too many people with broader feet get into narrower shoes and then take them way too large. The shoes are just too narrow for them, not too small (in size and length). Surely, in climbing shoes that could be extreme; in runnig shoes, which are all more or less unisex and have much volume, to fit the most amount of feet possible, to sell as many pairs of shoes as possible, it is not that extreme. Asics is known somehow to fit a little narrow. For me, they are fat boats! But probably out there are enough people with broader feet than the regular Asics model are constructed for and would need a wide version, but go for the normal and take it larger. I HATE it when you cannot do even simple sidesteps or something because the fking shoes are soo big. So, no, you cannot generalize it going up. YOU may, someone else may, but for sure not the majority of people. I am for sure not the only exception ;) Of course, it your honest feedback and this deserves absolute appreciation, but if sometone hears you hve to size up, then orders the shoe in that size (instead of trying it on in the store or ordering multiple pairs), he or she ends up with a too large pair. I've came across a few of those people seeling their running shoes on second hand plattforms because they were told to size up and wer unhappy, had different types of "problems", were fed up with the shoe and sold them. And that's not how it should be. Same as sizing climbing shoes: NO one should give general(!) recommendations, because every foot fits differently in every shoe, everyone climbs different stuff and different difficulties, etc. One could just give your own example, but just as an example (xyz works for me, but that may not be the case for many others, especially YOU, young fella) and not as a generalization. Sure, if many testers, people, etc have the feeling that the shoe is small or large, it has more weight. But until now, I just came across tests which say tts (true to size). Never have i seen, read, or heard to go up in size in asics runnig shoes. What I have read is, that in the past, Asics runnign shoes fit smaller, that THEN, tts was often too small and you had to go up half a size. That would explain how my GT-2000 #4 were too small in EU45 - half size up in EU 46 they fit but barely, and now, every single Asics running shoe in EU 46 fit bigger, larger, longer and in EU 45 they fit, but I am really at the fron with my fat big toe. But otherwise I would swin in those fking boats :) To you: When you say trhat your feet grew over time, then you probably don't have the same shoe size any more, maybe your feet are now a half a size bigger, larger, etc :) The someonecrying: Never have I read an comment to all the other tests (which say tts for THEM) that the shoe fit too small. So, if you don't try on the shoes and then buy what fits best for you, the utmost stupidest thing one could ever do is search for a TH-cam which says the shoe fitted them smaller and cry in the comments about it :) For me: no upsizing in Asics running shoes, also in many other tests and testers, therefore no general advice for upsizing possible :)
Just like Novablast 3 I had to go down half a size. I don’t have narrow feet. I have a mixed feelings about them. I like somethings better about the 4 and somethings better about version 3. Overall I think Novablast 4 was a good update and is faster.

kinda disagree with vomero, at least as a forefoot striker doing an 8mile long run at a very slow pace killed my feet after the run. meanwhile on a 10 mile slow run with the novablast, my feet were un-phased. I think has to deal with the blend of the zoom x cushioning on the vomero, because on invincible 3s i could go long miles and not worry about my feet.
Just got these and I’m pretty happy with them. A solid mix of comfort and performance imo.
@@SemiAI-.- which colour way did you like and enjoy in the end?
