I am a primitive camping and outdoor skills enthusiast, making videos for fun in northern Appalachia. I don't have sponsors and I don't get paid to do reviews. Watch a video or two, leave some knowledge, maybe get inspired to go outside. Thanks for watching.
Solo spring overnight camp - Snugpak hammock - Steak and campfire baked potato
I go out for a change of pace at an established site ten miles into the middle of nowhere.
Summer is almost upon us and I've been busy getting the yard under control, so it was nice to finally get out and try some new things. It did not all go according to plan, as you will see, but I had a good time and learned from it. For anyone more concerned about ticks than I am: I sprayed both my clothes and myself, avoided brushing up against plant life as much as possible, and performed checks any time I felt the slightest tickle (which was often).
Bag is a USGI assault pack. Sleep system/shelter is a Snugpak jungle hammock (bug net permanently attached) with a poncho liner and flannel blanket.
Contents:
0:00 - Intro
0:57 - Still cleaner than most motels
2:37 - Fire
3:50 - A pirate's life for me
5:13 - Food prep with apologies to Mr. Gibson
6:40 - Houston, we have tater
9:52 - Books, tea and Kafka dreams
12:14 - Obligatory fire contemplation
14:00 - The first sip is the best

Solo winter overnight camp - Plash Palatka shelter - campfire brats and soup
มุมมอง 2.9K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
I go out for another round of experiments with sleep systems and camp cooking. I had planned on doing more camps over the winter, but it was a rough end to the year and between low motivation, poor weather and one failed attempt at a snow camp, uploading videos has not been in the cards. TH-cam videos can sometimes give the impression that everything is simple and easy because we can edit out t...
Solo camp in the rain - tarp shelter - bison stew, sausage gravy biscuits - rain sounds
มุมมอง 4.6Kปีที่แล้ว
I go out on a particularly wet weekend and experiment with camp cooking. This one was tricky to film because of the weather and low light, but listening to the rain on the tarp all night was pretty nice. The stew turned out great, and the sausage gravy biscuits... well, I'm sorry you have to see it. I'll use less water next time. The shelter is a modified plow point with a surplus German ground...
Norse thunderstorm

We had a terrific lightning display recently, and while I couldn't camp that night due to work, I was able to record some of it. I decided to get in some more practice with the audio editor. Apparently I need more practice uploading as well, since I accidentally used the original un-edited file. Oops. Second time's a charm?
Short video - summer day hike by the river
มุมมอง 407ปีที่แล้ว
It's not a fancy overnight camp, but it'll do for now. Summer is a good time for me to scout out potential campsites, refine my packing lists, and work on my video editing (fun fact: my audio sucked today and I replaced most of it). I'll be trying out some new (to me) things this year, but if there's anything you'd like to see when the weather improves and I get back to camping, please let me k...
Solo overnight camp - litefighter tent - sausage and rice - now with 100% more chair
มุมมอง 982ปีที่แล้ว
I take a fairly US-heavy setup out to enjoy some of the last cool weather. I set up in a nice pine stand that only looks a little like the Ritual movie, and enjoy sausage and rice for dinner before setting in with an old book. My decision to have only coffee for breakfast was ultimately regrettable, as I was ravenously hungry by the time I got back to the car. Fortunately, I'm licensed to hunt ...
Overnight camp, no sleeping bag - tarp shelter - steak on sticks
มุมมอง 8Kปีที่แล้ว
I go out to experiment with a blanket-based sleep system and a hatchet I found in the basement. Spoiler alert: I needed more layers, or maybe heavier thermals. I'll have to experiment further next winter, as spring is here and the weather is already warming up. Please excuse the little hiccup at the ten-second mark; it kept popping up during the render and I couldn't get it to go away for whate...
What's in the bag? January solo camp loadout
มุมมอง 215ปีที่แล้ว
A brief list of the things I managed to cram into my bag for my previous video. Not included are the things I carried on my person (belt knife, ferro rod, etc), consumables (bratwurst, coffee, etc), and things I left in my car (spare tire, teddy bear, etc). Thank you for watching. Questions, comments and suggestions are welcomed. Music is "The Celebrated Minuet", provided by Rafael Krux on Free...
Solo camping overnight - lavvu poncho tent - campfire bratwurst

It's my first time, TH-cam. Be gentle.
that looks like a great design, very well done !
Thank you! I later used the same setup on a rainy camp and I can confirm it does a good job of keeping the water out.
THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you too, very excited viewer!
THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you can be happy that this hammock did not ripped apart mate
I am indeed happy. I believe it's made out of 20D nylon, so there's not much to it, but it seemed pretty solid.
Sounnds like a bad ass ride you got there
I used an audio editor to give my four-cylinder SUV an engine upgrade. 😉
Nice video 👍🙂
Thank you; I'm glad you enjoyed it.

How much of the audio was captured by that mic/device on the table? The birdnoise was really nice
Very little, actually. The audio replacement for my torturous whistle playing was from the field mic, but otherwise the birds were loud enough that the Osmo picked them up just fine. Going forward I'll be recording audio externally to avoid the Osmo's automatic gain adjustments.
Dormir en hamaca es estupendo 👍
Parece dormir en un barco.
Hey this was real mellow! I liked it a lot. I like that shelter! The plow point doesn't always get the credit it deserves. Solid rig. If you have a lightweight canvas tarp you can set it up as such, install a tie out in the middle and guy that out for some extra head room. There's a gentleman from the UK who has a YT channel called Giles Binyon. He only does the plow point with the pull out and since it's lightweight cotton he can have a small campfire on a steamer fire bowl type thing right in front of the shelter. I like your style... nice and simple. Where are you located roughly, if you don't mind me asking? I'm in New England and always looking for people who want to do this stuff. It's tough because I'm sober. Not many people want to do this stuff sober, interestingly. Let me know if you're looking for someone to go with. Take care. NQU.
Thanks NQU, glad you liked it. I've tried a few different setups with the 10x10 tarp; plow point worked out great for this trip because it goes up quick and I was already getting rained on. I'm in northern Appalachia, so a bit of a drive from your neck of the woods. I do a couple of out-of-state trips and group camps each year, so maybe we can share a camp at some point!
@@alexanderoutdoors For sure!! Let me know when and I'll try and schedule it in. Thanks for getting back. Have a great week. NQU
I gotta say... I really appreciated this watch! Peaceful, simple and it looked like you really enjoyed yourself. Don't you get terrified out there alone? I do... big time I'm trying to work through it but it's hard! Were you able to bearbag your food? Thank you so much for taking us along! I subbed tonight! Take care and be well. NQU
Thank you; I enjoyed it quite a bit. Being alone at night definitely took a bit of getting used to at first, but now it's just my quiet getaway. I don't make use of a bearbag currently; haven't seen hide nor hair of a bear in my area, though I do occasionally get serenaded by coyotes. Probably the first time I see a bear I'll start looking for branches to throw a string over.
@@alexanderoutdoors I'm just guessing here but are you in the great commonwealth of Virginia?
@@notquiteultralight1701 Not quite, though it is a commonwealth. I reside in southern PA; gives me plenty of options within a few hours' drive.
@@alexanderoutdoors oh nice! My backpacking buddy hails from Altoona. I'm in Massachusetts.
Nice simple camp whats not to like. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from Australia
Thank you from the US! I've seen a few outdoor adventures from your neck of the woods; beautiful stuff.
Cool adventure man.
Thank you; I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Cool video! I like your style. 👍
Thank you for watching!
19:28 I’ll have to give you one of my good recipes for soup
Please do; I'll be trying more camp cooking as the year progresses.
Good overnighter. Those Polish lavvus are awesome. Sweet coat as well. Nate
I've got some plans for the lavvus coming up; looking forward to featuring them in a video again.
Good stuff with a good vibe, Jess from Endurance room sent me. Nate
Thanks Nate! I'm a big fan of Jess's channel, learned a lot of stuff from his videos.
keep that packing string , could come in handy.
Thanks for the suggestion; I'll keep it in mind next time I'm out.
Super video, simple gear and food. What's not to like
Simple is how I like it. I get fancy every now and then, but it's tough to beat the basics.
Such a beautiful and serene video my friend!
Thank you! Always nice to get some peace and quiet.
What kind of soup was that?
Store-brand baked potato soup with bacon and cheese. Not bad, but I'll have to make some from scratch at some point for comparison.
Mighty fine video. Most excellent prep and deployment of cool camping gear.
Glad you enjoyed.
Appreciate your taking the time to make this video. Always enjoy seeing what others carry. So thank you! I have that same Frost River pack. Saved up quite awhile to purchase it. Absolutely no regrets! Best pack I own. All their equipment is well worth the investment. Best to you from Indiana!
Hey, thanks for the comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Frost River does indeed make some great stuff.
Hello Greetings from indonesia. Where are you from?
Greetings to you as well. I am from the US.
Looks cozy in the tent ☺️
I was, surprisingly, able to stay dry. Shoutout to the dynamic duo of Aquaquest and Tennier Industries.
Sorry to hear about your son. Stu.
The stew was the good one; the bison steak cooked up real nice. 👌
Great video, especially considering the rather sucky conditions. Really enjoyed the food prep segments. Amazing how well your camera does with just the light of your headband flashlight.
I might have to buy a separate headlamp for the camera to wear.
That sausage biscuit nonsense actually looked really good. No book this time?
I decided to play it safe and go without a book because of the weather. A bit less entertaining, but I had the rain to listen to.
Very nice my friend 🤠
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed.
Thanks for braving the hot, steamy and wild outdoors to let us see what it's like out there. I've mostly hunkered down INdoors so far this summer... just too wimpy to get all sweaty and icky and bugbit. So looking forward to cool weather, which will hopefully come by January.
Here to help.
Looooove!!!!!😂😂😂😂
Howdy! Where is this campsite?
Hello! So far I've been running around in the northeastern US, but I plan on traveling to other regions in the future.
What great weather! Looks like a nice place 😊
It's a keeper.
Another most excellent video. Looks like nice woods for camping.
Think the boogeyman might have been stomping around the camp at night... or maybe just a field mouse. Still, a pretty pleasant area.
I enjoy watching your videos.
Thank you very much; good to know they are enjoyed.
Great, keep it coming
WIll do; glad you enjoyed.
Pretty common to be out in the wilderness with steak and no sleeping bag…
Thank you for watching!
I like his priorities 😉
Really nice video! Not a lot of useless yapping like some. Great scenery and good gear. Nice camp site on the ridge and the steak looked delicious!
Thank you very much; I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm hoping to get another video put together soon.
Estupendo campamento, me suscribo. Saludos desde España
¡Hola desde América! Gracias por ver.
Did u stay warm enough ?
Warm enough to survive? Yes. Warm enough to do it again the same way? No. When we get back to winter I'll try it again, but with heavy thermals instead of silk weight. I hope you enjoyed watching!
Sangat bagus teman air yang mengalirnya_____semangat buat vidio berikutnya temanku___
Terima kasih telah menonton video saya
-17°F, no tent, no sleeping bag, no fire, no clothes, dick stuck in a porcupine, wooden knife, raw turtles
Just an observation. I found it kind of interesting that you bedded out on a layer of leaves. The prime home of ticks. Unless of coarse you are sprayed down in permethrin. Had a friend do the same thing and ended up with Lime disease. Be careful out there.
Hello Stephen, and thank you for your concern. I am intimately familiar with ticks; had a nasty case of RMSF when I was a young lad. The ticks haven't come out yet in my area (and whenever they do it'll be too soon), but I am always sure to spray down and make thorough checks for hitchhikers. When it gets real buggy outside, you'll see me switch to an enclosed tent, as I don't fancy getting goodnight kisses from spiders. Thank you for watching, and stay bug-free.
Good looking spot and good reading material
Only the best.
Looks like an awesome night🤘
A good time was had by all.
Love the versatility of the tarp doubling as a hat! 🤣
Let it never be said that I am not a man of fashion.
Love the pooch. Great vid.
Thank you. The pooch was compensated for his appearance.
Damn, get on with the video already!
Thanks for watching!
Another excellent movin' pitcher.
Good book energy.
Very impressive. Shout out to OnlyShovel, Marilena 🥰
