Welcome/Witamy to Good Deeds Sailing.
Sailing around the world doing good deeds! :)
We are Lee (🇬🇧), a maintenance engineer, and Karolina (🇵🇱) a dental hygienist, and together with our cat PJ we plan to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world doing charity work as and where we can. First we have to refit our cheap sailboat, a 1976 31ft Westerly Berwick ready to travel across to France, through the French canals and into the Mediterranean sea. Here we plan to gain more sailing experience and source a larger sail boat to carry our tools and equipment.
Although novices at boat renovation and refits we are sharing as much of the refit and engine installation and tips as we can, before setting out on our new minimalistic but hopefully fulfilling life.
Join us on our crazy adventure as we set off around the world doing good deeds.

Ils en auront donnés des challenges les canaux français 😅😅 mais chaque défi à été relevé 💪💪 des gros bisous mes amis ❤❤❤
I found the French I met in rural areas to be more helpful than in large towns or cities. One garage who help us out did not want payment so I gave the guy some money for the coffee break kitty. Glad you got it fixed without much trouble.
Hi Rob, yes we generally found the same. In Donjeux, Orconte and other small towns and villages we so much help from friendly faces whereas in Lyon I had a fishing rod and reel stolen from the boat. And much preferred Arles to Lyon anyway.
Il y en a qu'un seul qui ne s'inquiète de rien et vis sa best life c'est PJ 😂
Je suis totalement d'accord ! Je veux être un chat ! 🤣🐈⬛️
Je pense bien a vous. Nous avions passés un agréable moment lors du goûter tarte tatin. Gros bisous mamie Martine
Salut Martine, oui on l'a fait. On en parle encore. On dit à tout le monde à quel point c'était sympa ! 🤩

You have overcome so many challenges which makes entertaining watching but I'm impressed how you face these challenges. Brilliant video, take care guys ❤

Jestesmy naprawde bardzo mile, pozytywnie zaskoczeni. Pozdrawiamy serdecznie 😊
Such nice French hospitality. And the French genius of the baguette machine. PJ seemed so impressed it looked like he was going to stay and apply for French citizenship. How old is the engine? It looks pretty new.
The hospitality here has been amazing, we have been so fortunate. The people are amazing. The engine is actually new, at the time of the bracket snapping it was under 200 hours of use. At first I thought it could be due to too much pressure in one single mount but when I looked at the weld 🙄
Mega super 😊😊😊po prostu czad super wyprawa

Thank you! Cheers!
Another GREAT VIDEO 😮
Thanks again!
Having gone through the French waterways from Calais to the Mediterranean, personally, I would've stayed put. There's no way I would want to go through a lock in darkness. But that's just me. :)
Hi and thanks for the comment. Yes our plan was to stay put in the weed for the night but as soon as the bridge went up the engineers advised us to go through just in case it trips out again when it goes down. But once through we found a good spot and tied up relieved lol
I presume you bought so many days passage through the canals. With all the lock problems, is there a danger of your pass expiring? (Even though it's not your fault). Thanks for sharing, I'm enjoying the trip! 😀
Hi Simon, we did have to extend our Vignette and buy another month online. That was kindly printed out by the wonderful Lizzy in the previous episode. We did originally believe we would complete the trip in 4 weeks.
The sight of locking through at night is great. The visual is quite different than during daytime. Using the weed brake to hold position was fun to watch. Much easier than entering a holding pattern waiting for a bridge with lots of other boats and a current as well.
Hi Rod, it was such a relief to get through the lock, we thought we were there for the night. That was the only time the weed had a positive effect on the boat.
Moving through the locks and bridges at night has to be nerve wracking, but you made it look easy. The look in Lees eyes tell the story.👍
Hi Harvey, nice to hear from you again. 😊 Fortunately once the lock gates opened everything happens quickly and before you realise, you've tied up. The worst was when we went into a tunnel in daylight, but the amount of weed slowed us down so much we came out in the dark and had to find somewhere to stop for the night. That was quite eerie.
Wow what great footage, I really am impressed how you handle the locks now, the speeded up footage is cool how you see your boat rising in the water to ground level x😊
You two just wow me so carm and very professional very much enjoying your videos take care x
Thanks so much Jo! Yes, I really like that bit too as you can also see the boat movements in the lock! Glad you enjoyed it! 😁🤩 xx
Thank you Bob! Calm and professional? We will take that! 😅🤣 hope you will enjoy the next episode too! 😊 xx
Great video with nice scenery. The weed looks to be a time consuming bother. I’m looking forward to some night locking.
A twin keeled boat is not the best for weedy conditions, at one point when we reversed there were like two bails of hay came up 😲. The worst lock was one that had to be operated manually and the engineer thought he'd have a bit of fun with us and let the water in as fast as he could, we ended up on our backs, feet prized against the lock wall trying to hold the boat steady 😅
You have to keep a close eye on engineers Lee. They’re tricky like that. lol
Mega wyprawa Karola jesteście wielcy ❤❤❤❤udanej podróży

@@joannestrange4777 thanks Jo, yes, we are having an amazing time here, so many nice surprises nearly every day. 😊 we will treasure that picture forever! ❤️
Seems the French locks are casually staff. Patience is needed
Yes especially out of season, this time of year seems to be mostly weed clearing duties.
@@gooddeedssailingdo you feel like your being awkward 😂

It's very relaxing watching you guys just take your time and meander across France. Do you have a date you're aiming for to get to the Med? I'm looking forward to seeing some winter/spring sailing in the south of France and beyond!
Hi Will, we don't rush lol we have a few options in the Med, we need to decide between Gibraltar then Morocco or Corsica. Sardinia and onto Tunisia. Some great episodes coming up 😀
@ Corsica gets my vote! I was there last autumn in Bonifacio. It’s just fantastic! Looks like amazing sailing territory.
That tarte tatin looks deliciousl! 😍

Great Video Guys. Very picturesque scenery too. "Lock Stew" - 😂 Like it! - That weed is horrendous! Looks like you are enjoying your canal passage. Looking forward to the Lock in the dark! Stay Safe.
Thanks again for the comment. We are loving it lol Yep Lock Stew, we couldn't get enough of it 😅😅
Did you suffer with much weed blocking the engine intake strainer?
@@atschris hi great question, fortunately when we fitted our new engine we fitted the water scoop back to front so it would allow any weed to go past it. It seems to have worked as we know of other boats that did overheat. The water scoop may have been shown in a previous episode if any help. We only suffered from weed building up around our 2 keels, whereas a fin keelers may have picked up less weed. Thanks again for your comment.
@@gooddeedssailing Lol fin keelers tend to ground out more often which is more awkward than just blowing weeds off your shorter twin keels.. but glad to see you are making friends on your way ... The little girl will remember for a long time her first trip on a boat down her canal.. hopefully they will get to travel that way themselves one day.🫶🏻 🧙🏼♂️🇬🇧.
Looks a bit colder now, have you got a diesel heater?..oh wish I was there lol😊
Hi Nigel, the temperature is certainly dropping. As for the diesel heater.. .yes and no. We have an Erberspascher diesel heater that has packed up. We are considering ordering a cheaper copy from China to replace it. Hope its not too damp where you are.
Hi, good to see you both on your journey through France. Lovely countryside. It’s heavy rain and strong winds here in the UK, take care look forward to your next film. Cheers.
Thanks for the comment Richard. 👍 glad your enjoying our videos and we will try to get another out this week 😀 Maybe you'll have snow for Christmas at least 😉
Fantastic guys liking the lock and bridge bit agree so much weed well done sailor's pleased you're enjoying it by the way good Deeds looks lovely travelling along the canals take care xxxx
Thanks Bob, hope you and Karen are both well. We here it's a bit gloomy over there. Any new neighbours yer? Thanks for the comment it really helps our channel. We will try to get another episode out this week.👍
If you do'nt want to be tossed arround in the med just now, I can recommend Aigues Mortes and Meze. And a few other places in between. 😊
Hi, thank you very much, will defo check it out! 😁
I would live to visit Poland!
You should you'll love it 😀
You should have been given a leaflet at the start of the canal. This has the control room telephone numbers on it for the upstream and downstream sections. The 'buzzer' calls are often not working. If stuck for any reason pull the red rod - it triggers the alarm at the control room (and 'locks' the mechanism). At the PUBLIC stop in Joinville electricity may still be available at one end of the dock. This free stop is more convenient for the supermarket than the hotel quay. At Langres (free with elec & water) there is a regular bus from the station to the town centre. Towards the Northern end of the long quay more or less opposite the locked gate, you will find a spot deep enough to get alongside with a yacht. Keep trying. The town is certainly worth a visit - Diderot museum and the Tower. You can ask any of the mobile lockies for the control room telephone numbers or the number of the 'in-charge' for whatever section you are on. You'll probably be given numbers as you proceed as they like to know when you are moving.
Great comment, 👍 thanks for the detailed information. We did manage to see Langres, amazing place and did a shop at the Intermachè. Loving France 🇫🇷 ❤️
@@gooddeedssailing I was based in St Jean de Losne 2006-2021 and having done all the 'circle' routes settled for alternating between Langres and North one year and C du Centre towards the Loire the next. Many fabulous experiences. Strongly reommend Blanquart at St Jean for work and storage. Transparently honest. Bon voyage.
@Kit_Marron thank you 😊

Thanks Gert, that lock was a bit of a shambles, even the intercom wasn't working. 😳 There's even better to come in future episodes lol
@@gooddeedssailing OK. Locking (no typingerror) forward to that. In Holland we have a saying : "Doen met de Franse slag". In English: "Do it the French way". In Dutch it means sth like doing things halfway, doing things improperly, doing things in a way that will not last very long. Etc.
