If you are a US author, make sure your bank is large enough to have an IBAN or SWIFT identifier. I use a small credit union which has neither and as a result, I found out none of the marketplaces outside of the United States that print my book can actually pay me royalties. The royalties are stuck in those foreign accounts. It’s not enough money for me to go through the trouble of opening an account with a large bank. But if you are planning on international sales-be aware.

Does Atticus work as an editor, so I don't have to use or pay for an editor?

I am a beginner trying to begin the KDP business. I am trying to do puzzles as my focus to start this out. I have watched your video because I am looking for a mostly all in one solution to low content booking publishing. But I see here and there some of the users having this issue or that issue. Just wondering if Book Bolt is really okay to start one’s business? I am a senior and don’t want to spend a lot of time learning to use different software to create books. I would like to hit the ground almost running but not sure if there will be glitches along the way with Book Bolt. I want to make sure the puzzles etc., are customizable and any other templates because I don’t want to use the same format etc., that are may be used and uploaded. Please advise based on your experience. Thanks

So how do you get the scene breaks to work? I tried typing '***' at the beginning of a line, but all Atticus displayed in the previewer was '***' at the beginning of the line. I tried using one of the premade scene breaks, but the previewer did not display them.

Atticus has greatly improved my productivity and work flow. I am on my fourth book. I have Scrivener and Vellum, but Atticus does the whole process. It's not perfect yet, but will be with further updates.

The problem I have with their royalties isn't necessarily when I get paid, but the amount that they pay. They use the formula (Royalty Rate x List Price) - Printing Costs = Royalty. This is very deceptive, and it will NOT give you 60% of the net. The equation should be (List Price - Printing Cost) * Royalty Rate = Royalty. This would guarantee that you get 60% and Amazon gets 40% and Amazon still gets paid for printing. For an example of how bad this really is, let's say you have a 450 page book that costs about $6.50 to print. If you set your list price at $11.99 you'd think that you'd get $3.29 right? Wrong. With Amazon's calculations you'll only get $0.69 per book. Yep, not even a dollar per book even though you're selling the book for over $5 more than the printing costs. You are only making 18.2%. Amazon is taking the vast majority of all profits and hoping that no one bothers to do the math and fact check them.

Thanks for the reality check. I can certainly relate to your content having published over 25 books on Amazon KDP for little success. The only person making money in the room is Amazon. All my books are children’s books and half of them feature “Wombats” as the main character! Marketing is the issue, front and centre! That costs big time and considering that to start with, the publishing and profit takeout Amazon charge makes your books four times dearer than you can pick a kids book up at Aldi for example. Reviews are necessary, but that’s a catch 22, as you need readers to get reviews and marketing to get readers. For an AUD $17 book which is just an 8.5” x 8.5” 40 page paperback, you are lucky to make $2. How can you justify the cost of marketing? My next move is to establish a website for my books and sell direct. To summarise, you have about as much chance to become a bestseller on Amazon, as to win the lottery!

The host is dull but resourceful and I recommend this video as a terrific place to start for sussing out profitable niches, keywords, etc. I was perplexed that he kept using the name KDPspy for the company whose correct name is KDspy (no P).

I would adopt LivingWriter if it allowed collaborating or maybe even merely commenting from non members. Nonwriters do not want to register on writing sites just to provide feedback.

I'll tel you right now that you can't trust atticus. It randomly doesn't save your work or reverts back to an old version of your document. Writers beware.

Thank you for another great video, this time about Atticus. At the moment of writing, the new revamp of Atticus is out about a week. Despite the fact the software has some shortcomings (like you mentioned in the cons section), it is like you said a very useful tool. The biggest glitch I found about Atticus is how it formats whole paragraphs or multiple lines with Italics. I see the linespace changing for that paragraph or those lines which gives an ugly layout in the reader. I am using Kobo Aura as ereader. I tried everything but I could not find a solution for this problem. Nevertheless, Atticus is an excellent application, and I am very glad you reviewed it. I am looking forward to your next video. If you coming from a typewriter then Atticus is absolutely awesome because you get a very basic word processor that, right now, is unable to do anything near to what MSWord, Pages, Scrivener or Google Docs can do, but coming from a typewriter this would not matter to you because you will have an awesome though extremely basic NotePad-like section to write your novel in where you don't have to retype a whole new page every time you make a typing error. The great thing about the minimalistic section where you do your actual writing of your novel is that ProWritingAid works seamlessly with your basic writing section of Atticus giving it a boost and making it a lot better for you, but after paying your once off $147 for Atticus you will then have to pay for a ProWritingAid monthly, yearly or lifetime subscription to get this added super nice benefit. I got the lifetime subscription of ProWritingAid. Atticus does nothing to assist you with plotting, planning, character building or structuring your novel in any shape or form. I've owned Atticus for almost two years now and after two years they are still telling me that these updates to the actual writing section of Atticus take time and after almost two years I am still being promised that Atticus plans to be a full rounded writing software package that is able to plot, plan, structure and do everything a novelist needs it to do to assist in your writing, but still no basic JKR style plot grid like Dabble has and no great improvements to the actual writing section of Atticus either. You know that place where you spend hours upon hours on your masterpiece, the actual writing section of Atticus. Instead all that Atticus has done in the past two years is continually improve on the section of Atticus that enables you to expertly format and publish your ebooks and paperbacks. This is the awesome part of Atticus, but the funny part is you need to write the novel first before formatting it for self publication and the writing section of Atticus is so limited right now, boring and bare bones. I mean if you don't want to wait another two years you could pay for another software on top of what you paying for ProWritingAid ProWritingAid. It's called Plotrr and you could do your plotting over there and export it to Atticus. It's totally unfair to force writers who have waited two years already for the writing section of Atticus to improve to now be told to go and spend more money until Atticus can catch-up and make good on there initial - and now - after two years their ongoing promise that Atticus will eventually not only be a great formatting app, but also a full featured writing app that can compete with Google Docs, Scrivener, MSWord and the best of them. The way Atticus put it was that Atticus was the baby born from Vellum, Scrivener and Google Docs having the best of the three. Hopefully this eventually happens because right now all Atticus really is, is a brilliant book formatting app that can compete with Vellum and not much else. If you looking for world, character, plot, structure, storyline, timeline, scene or chapter building you will not find it here. At least not yet, in 2024...
