Thanks for the reality check. I can certainly relate to your content having published over 25 books on Amazon KDP for little success. The only person making money in the room is Amazon. All my books are children’s books and half of them feature “Wombats” as the main character! Marketing is the issue, front and centre! That costs big time and considering that to start with, the publishing and profit takeout Amazon charge makes your books four times dearer than you can pick a kids book up at Aldi for example. Reviews are necessary, but that’s a catch 22, as you need readers to get reviews and marketing to get readers. For an AUD $17 book which is just an 8.5” x 8.5” 40 page paperback, you are lucky to make $2. How can you justify the cost of marketing? My next move is to establish a website for my books and sell direct. To summarise, you have about as much chance to become a bestseller on Amazon, as to win the lottery!
