Dude, I found you through your axe block building video, and now there is an axe block with bolted on 2x6's in my back yard! I would love move on axes - from selection to care and feeding!
I love hearing about carving. I'm only a beginner. Wondering what is the process to using the wood you keep stored in water. Do you start carving right out of the container? Maybe you already explained it, but with my ADD I watch lots of how to videos because I have so many hobbies. I want to make some spoons for gifts and to use in my house. Years ago I got a hook knife, but I was not well educated about it and I think I got one with a hook that's too small? And the bevel is on the outside. I guess that makes it harder to sharpen?
Would love to see a more detailed video explaining your thought process with finishing cuts. How can I get my rough shaped spoons to look so clean? It’s a huge struggle for me!
Love your channel Andy, i've learned a lot from you from way over here across the pond! Here's a few questions for you: how did you get into spoon carving? Who are some of your mentors? do you sell your work at different festivals, maybe make a video about touring the festival! have you tried carving other things cups bowls etc.? An idea for a pretty interesting video perhaps, the history of spoon carving! maybe a video on gluing up different segments of wood and carving a spoon out of it or maybe a video on detailed or elaborate carvings in your spoons! Anyway, thanks for your videos and thanks for your channel!
Hi there Andy, I've just started my greenwood spoon carving adventure - my question is; yes I understand moisture content is your friend for carving but once the spoon is made, do you let it dry before oiling, or only burnish once dry, or what defines dry or can the spoon be finished , complete with burnishing and oiling all in a day, is it going to crack some months further down the track?

Sharpening definitely hook knifes, smallest limbs(branches) you would use for spoons, oils that are food safe, if you were to sell them how much you would average price, non-fruit woods, used for spoons, more explanation on what ur doing in videos or atleast a detailed tutorial once and a while. Love you videos
Your awsome. Still healing.
Love to see.large deep laddles
One of my wonders is in your opinion, which woods would you consider carving already dry? And what are some woods to stay away from when making utensils. Thanks!

All the best to your family. As with everything, I think practice makes perfect, but I have a major issue with sharpening. I always get envious, seeing your smooth and seemingly effortless finishing cuts! Besides looking at tons of instructional videos here and on other channels I can't seem to get the hang of it. I can't afford a tormek, but besides from that I own some good tools, mainly japanese waterstones in grids up to 10.000, a DMT guided sharpener with diamond files and so on. I have a hard time even getting to razor sharpness, but that's it, mostly. Can you give advice on stropping compounds, devices and methods?

Yes! How's mom and baby? Have you settled on a name? Boy? Girl? Can I make a suggestion, Andy? Why don't you write a book? A lovely book with diagrams and lists of suppliers and info about different types of wood and - STUFF! Call it the Complete Guide to Spoon Carving or some such. The psychological aspect, the history, - there's loads of stuff out there! In fact, I can even suggest a publisher - what about making it a Dummies or Idiots Guide. I bet one of them would LOVE to publish a book about spoon making.
Wonderful ideas!
Excited to hear your "review"of these. THey look incredible. Very similar in shape and size to the Kalthoff? Keen to hear how you see these fitting into your selection.
I will definitely be talking more in depth about them soon!
@@andyspoons Can't wait!
Such beauty @goldenfigworkshop
🤤
So how many axes do you actually need ?! Nice haul !
Only 1
1!
You're cool with how many axe carvings you have about 10. What's the company? Who made the axes? 😃 Julia Kaltoff' only one thing is enough for me.
Soulwood creations
I appreciate it! It's not about simply having a lot of axes though, I'm lucky enough to be in a position where I can explore different styles and help educate folks from one place the best I can!
@andyspoons I'm also highlighting some of your techniques and then doing it. Your tool is good, but I have to be loved. I have two spooncores, for example. There were 5 others who sold, one carving axe, two carving knives. Of course, depending on what spoons I cherish, I make small bowls with this Tool. KUKSA
Nice, that would be good for the snow 😅
😂
Nice spoon. Baybe one day i made something simular
Beautiful.
this video looks oversaturated
Probably why I'm better known as a spoon carver than a video editor!
Nice. I was thinking I'd like to try a soup/ramen spoon myself soon. Are you thinking of making a longer video on your process? That would be wonderful!
I should!
What kind of finish stain do you use?
I use Real Milk Paint co Wood Wax 👌 you can use Andy10 for a discount over on their site!
🖐 merci pour le partage, je vais testé en frêne ( bois sec). Bourgogne France. À bientôt ici👋
Spoons got great character
Great video! I love it that your video background music is the beautiful sounds of nature! Good info on green wood and I myself really like learning content videos. Even if you've done a video like it before, I think it's always worth it to post a new one, sometimes things do change. Tips and tricks are always great to watch!
So happy to hear you enjoyed it!
Great information I know other wood carvers that keep their wood wet and never understood exactly but I think you explained it fairly well thank you
You're welcome, it's definitely a topic that takes a bit of getting used to, and I'm glad it helped!
Congratulations
Thanks for the info, I would like to know if you keep a separate set of knives for finish work as compared to roughing out.
It is a really good idea to have a "finishing set" absolutely. If you don't, taking the time to sharpen everything before finishing cuts makes a massive difference
Congrats! Love it!!
Thank you!!
@andyspoons Wooo hooooo New babies!!! Much love Dude
I've always carved kiln-dried to avoid splitting in the tip of the bowl, which happened to me so many times in the beginning of my carving career. How do you avoid that? I've heard some carvers say by the time you've carved a green spoon out, it's already drying (?), or to put it in a paper or plastic bag to slow the process and prevent cracking. I have my doubts on these ideas, so would appreciate your input, thanks!
So the usual cause of cracks at the top of the spoon is honestly that there were already cracks there to begin with! I recommend trying to carve back in from the cut end a bit more so that you are working with wood that hasn't succumbed to checking. Mirco fractures tend to reveal themselves once the spoon begins to fully dry
@@andyspoons thank you!
Great videos Andy! I always learned something from you! How do you prevent your spoons from cracking during the drying process, does this ever happen to you? How dry is dry enough before sealing? Thanks for your channel!
The answer no-one wants to hear but is the honest truth; if your spoon cracks while drying, the problem is already there (micro cracks too close to the drying end), or you have caused them during the axing process. I would say it happens to me maybe once in every few hundred spoons these days, very rarely. I am really particular about wood choice. So you could realistically seal straight away, it is just a matter of the timber will continue to shift until it is completely dry. It's completely up to you, and all down to more time and experience with each timber!
YAY First, nice video, sadly in city i cant really afford to keep it in water or freezer no space. So it dries up in garage :| Considering a small freezer but the space is very very limited.
I lived in a bachelor apartment and kept some timber in a plastic tub full of water. You don't need much space!
The fact that you have a garage tells me you have plenty of space!
Smol spoons are so fun to make. Welcome to the world smol spoon !
What type of wood are you carving? I know someone who would ADORE that pink shade.
This is Silky Oak 👌
i liked this video andy, and i would love the occasion to ask questions live , you still doing such ?
I would love to, there will definitely be more time when I have moved spaces in the next month or so!
Really admiring the axe control ! I just did a blank from mulberry myself but unfortunately I am lacking the experience. Still have long way to go . Trying improve by watching your moves. So thanks a lot
Thank you so much! You will get there 🙂👌
Who else re-watched 4:56 a few times 😮? Nice control, Andy. Oof!
I do not know who you are but i like the shape maybe someday i wiil try it

Hello from Alaska! Thanks for the video talking your way through the spoon making. Very cool indeed :)
Thank you for watching!
Great video 🪓
Hi Andy, how are you? I hope you and your family are well. Absolute pleasure to watch that. I really enjoyed it lol you make it look so effortless 😂. Keep up the great videos
Thank you so much!
@@andyspoonsWhy do you start with such a huge piece of wood?
Hello from Alaska. Did you build the 'contraption' you used initially to start the spoon? The one with the green thing that held the spoon tight? Or does it have a name please? My husband could build me one. Thank you and I love all the different colors of wood. Very nice of you to share. So relaxing to watch you create cool spoons :)
Hi there! This is called a "spoon mule", I have a video on the basics, that will definitely give you a better idea of the construction 🙂
Wow
Do you sand these off when you finish carving or not at all?
Never
