Maybe it’s an Aussie thing, but I like the Green and Gold. 😊 Definitely the dirty sounds are the ones which allow you to compare the midrange curve of the speaker. All those overtones are a bit like running pink noise into a pair of studio monitors to match them.

I thought that the overall winner was the Warehouse G10CS. It sounded the best to me on the first two riffs, and still sounded good with the Tweed Vibrolux, although all three alnico speakers sounded great on that one, with the Celestion Gold winning.

GWH G10C was my favourite closely followed by eminance GA10-SC64. Oddly enough I quite enjoyed the Jensen P10R F only when played clean through the p90's. Any time that Jensen had a slight bit of gain I was really turned off it! Thanks a lot for this test!

Thanks for the testing! At the volumes at which you're driving the speakers, I preferred the 10"-ers every time! Curious how they'd compare in closed-back cabs, as I've just discovered I much prefer my 10" Greenback in a closed cab.

My three 10" favorites, the G10 Creamback, VT-Junior and the Jensen Silverbird are missing here unfortunately. (the CB sounds surprisingly good with high-gain amps and has a very unique character, which also differs it from the 12" Creambacks, the VT is the allrounder and the Silverbird has a very balanced sound, apart from the - Jensen typical - for my taste still a little too thin and shrill treble.) Next thing, a single 10" speaker usually does not really sound excellent, for me 10" speakers sound best in 210 cabinets, in the best case with semi-open costruction, which you can alter to closed. The 210 also has the advantage, that you can combine different speakers, which really can improve the tone, if they harmonize well. But the best combination for me is a 12" 10" combination, which gives you the faster attack of the 10" plus the better low end of the 12". If I only had to choose one of the speakers here, I took - even surprising for myself - The Ten 30. Already had it once, it replaced the scratchy sounding Eminence in my Crate Vintage Club. Big improvement! I like the 12" Greenbacks, but the 10" version does not convince me so much, sounds too boxy to me and most other speakers too thin and shrill. But the for me by far best sounding 10" speaker is a 1960's Elac Alnico, if you find one anywhere. A little similar to a 12" Alnico Silver Bell, but even a liitle more intense, but not boxy sounding mids, not too shrill treble and sufficient bass. Nevertheless a nice comparison.

Great video. Exactly what I expected: 12s are mid scooped and have a looser feel. The 10s have more mids, less bass and a snappier feel. Perfect for recording. I switched the WGS g12c in my Princeton back to a G10C, and can only conclude that Leo got it right. Again.

Funny I just recorded a similar video but with 10" British flavoured speaker. I still have to edit the video. I also think that clean sound is not that great for comparison, crunch is the best to reveal all the differences when not in front of the cab (through a TH-cam video for exemple 😊). Your video is great, an reamping is to me the only way to really compare them. Mine are : wgs retro 10, wgs et10, emminence ramrod, celestion greenback, creamback, g10-l35 and tone tubby 40/40.

I was surprised how close they were when clean. Especially in the Tweed style cabs. But even the Princeton and Deluxe cabs sounded pretty close, when not driven. I did wonder if some of the increase in midrange, was due to the shallower angle of the cone of the 10s?

This determines how much of the audio signal bandwidth is transmitted and the decay of the signal at any given position on the tone knob. The effect is subtle but noticeable and in some cases, when the stars align, it can be astounding. Some of those old caps had significant inductance owing to their construction. Try putting a 1.8mh-2.5mh axial inductor in series with any modern cap and see if you can hear the difference.

Nice Video... Im building a Deluxe Reverb and im mixing Jupiter Yellow Vintage with blue sozos on the .047 coupling side manually because I didnt find .047 in yellow.. I could have used .05 but if quality control on these brands are true to tolerances I wanted to start out with correct values that show in schematic as I could get for baseline...

The values never seem to be totally accurate, which is vintage correct. 😇 I wouldn’t worry about that small of a difference, although it definitely doesn’t hurt.

I assume you checked the caps to find the outer foil lead and connected that to the lower impedance point in the circuit or ground when necessary?

" If it ain't broke, don't fix it", I wish I would listen to my own advice. I had a Strat sounding nice and springy and bold with a Lunear 250kk and a wima .01 and a Yellow Mallory .022uf ( my brain said" leave it alone") but after watching too many vids I got a audio taper and a silver paper in oil(Wires were v. Flimsy)and it sounded horrid. I tried various other caps but no joy. I realised it was the Potentiometer that seemed to thin the sound out. Found a Wima .047 and a CTS linear and almost as good as that 1st set-up. You have to bond with your instrument/amp and in my case I learned the hard way. Linear for tone, Audio for vol or whatever works for you.

Good effort. Actually most of the people even do not scratch the surface and can’t understand how complex things are that define the end result the actual tone we hear when we play electric guitar. Most misunderstood thing are guitars but closely followed by amplifiers. Issue is amplified by number of the people that are convinced that they understand it but actually have dangerous half knowledge. That promotes one liner myths we often hear. People often give higher importance to things that actually don’t make huge changes. For example different brand of the output tubes. Sure it makes a difference but nowhere near as much the cabinet and the speaker choice will do. Put old Fender and Marshall true the same cabinet and let them overdrive and they will sound Fender alike with Fender cabinet and Marshall alike with Marshall cabinet. Now you mention bypass cap difference and bright cap difference between the Fender and Marshall and that is true. Sure there are bypass caps on mixer resistor of Marshall that also adds some top end. Though that all is not the only thing happening. Check the tones stacks. Topology looks same. Few different values only right? Sure but those values make huge difference. Fender ton stack is more interactive and regulates more. Meaning maximum value will increase given range a lot more than Marshall solution will. Also it allows extended lower range. It”s more scooped as well. But that’s it. Marshall tone stack let’s way more signal true. It gives those Marshall middle range and controlled bottom end. But it all plays together. Closed back cabinets and Celestion speakers add to that. EL34 add to that. Different sized transformers add to that. It all matters. Why 5E3 Deluxe sounds different than AC15? Well everything is different accept for the lack of NFB and fact that they are both cathode biased with similar power levels. 5E3 Deluxe has way older type of the phase inverter. Has lower gain V1. Has older type of tone control. Output tubes sound different. Again different speakers Jensen vs. Celestion. To many things to name them all. Designing an amplifier you can do many different things. Everything will influence the sound and feel. Look at the filtering only. Just barely minimal filtering will feel different and especially with the tube rectifier increase the sag. To much will make it feel stiff. Output transformer. Over dimensioned one will make the same circuit sound way different. For example Hiwatt pa vs standard dr103. Apparently same power stage but PA has output transformer that you can’t really saturate with same circuit. It will sound less pleasant always. Look at the Plexi sound. You can add master volume and do tricks but it will never sound the same as when the complete amplifier starts to overdrive. Important part of its sound is overdrive part of the output stage. Without it it sounds different and sterile. I tend to love cathode biased no NFB amplifiers. Though once you get above 30 Watt things get to wild. At lower power levels differences act differently. High power requires some things to be done differently. Look at the power supply. High power amplifiers tend to have often solid state rectifier. Or look at the 50 and 100 Watt power supply of the some older Marshall amplifiers. 50 Watt has still center tapped full wave rectifier but with two in series diodes for each half way. 100 Watt has only one tap for high voltage and sports 4 diodes full bridge Gretz rectifier. No place to full with old ways. They need high voltage and efficiency so latest principal was used. 100 Watt is having even more filtering. Often it has 8 can caps. Mostly double once as well. Most often dual 50 uF with 500V. 50 Watt will use one cap for the first node and use it in parallel hence 100 uF 500V. The first node of the 100 Watt will have two of them connected in series and parallel resulting in 50 uF 1000V capable combination. With help of strapping resistors voltage is decided equally and actual caps work at pretty easy lower voltage and that makes them last longer. After it 100 Watt adds 6 more can caps making for one stiff power supply. At the other hand every tube rectifier has its first cap limitation. Often you will see that there is no more than 32 uF at the first node. Two 50 uF sections in parallel would ruin the rectifier tube over time. Inrush current is just to high. So you can’t make very powerful power supply with one tube rectifier. Enter the dual rectifiers. But wait then you need 2x w to 3A 5V Hester windings for two tube rectifiers. That’s always on up to 30 Watts used only for heating the rectifier that will also make less B+ voltage. So you see how going diode rectification is more efficient and gives up to 30 Watts more high voltage handling for the same size transformer and gives higher B+. Things are complex. Every little thing maters. Company changes transformer brand and same circuit sounds different. Company changes coupling caps same circuit sounds differently. Company goes PCB it sounds different again. Every little thing matters.

I think it would be great to get rid of the noise when in the boost position. I can hear the difference between the Super 4 and the Aphek. I can hear a big difference in neck position but less of a difference in the bridge position. The Super 4 is cleaner. Thanks for the review of the bass. I have the MC924 1979. I love it. I think the BTB is a newer, CNC version of the MC924 (my opinion).

I couldn't afford either, so I built my own electric-12 a while ago 😎👍 In a proper studio it obviously can't compete with a good acoustic 12, but in my homestudio I love to doubletrack my acoustic (via microphone) with the electric (via a clean tube preamp) - this brings out that specific shimmer even more!

The video is very nice but I didn't understand one thing: after adding the vibrolux you set the eq (bass 4.5 and treble 7)... but when you later made the comparison I noticed that the original Bassman has the controls all at 12 hours (except the gain which is 4.6 like that of the liquid profile). There's something I'm missing. Thank you!

I assume you mean the generic, non-liquid eq? That defaults to the 12 o-clock settings, unless adjusted. Telling the liquid eq what settings the amp was at, is still the same as having the generic eq at 12 o-clock: until you change the value.
