What to look for when buying a Fiero! - Gen Z Garage - Ep 1
My first car was a black 1986 fiero 2.5. Was in the navy and just came back to the United States after serving a fulm year on diego garcia. Bought it in pascagoula, ms and drove it to san diego and back. I recently bought a 1988 formula and i stalled Lamborghini doors on it. While i was on another project my mother let a shade tree mech take the fule tank out and took out the fuel sending unit. I need another fuel-sending unit as he got arrested with the part and the police lost it. 😮
Whoo hoo! Cliff!
this might be an odd question but are all these past steps applicable if im doing this on an iron duke out of an 87 s10?
The engines should be identical by year. The only differences I’d imagine is what year you have, and the accessory brackets that you’re using.
@@GenerationZGarage i just blew an 87 motor with tbi and i have another one that i was told came out of a 91 s10
WRONG! Some members do not feel welcomed on Cliff’s forum and would have to tiptoe around issues and can’t really say what is on their mind on anything that would have an effect on Cliff’s income coming into his pocket from TFS and other vendors or they would get the boot. I definitely didn't feel welcomed when I did a review on The Fiero Store (TFS) who mistreated me badly as a customer. Cliff kicked me out even though I didn’t do anything wrong and had no red bar. It was within my constitutional rights to speak up about TFS as a customer. So, Cliff was wrong and is biased when it comes to protecting those vendors over our Free Speech any day, which is a violation of our constitutional rights in the USA. Also, Cliff did poorly when it comes to police those bullies on his forum. This is one of the reasons why his forum is declining rapidly.
Is this Fred? Rarely, if ever, does Cliff actually ban someone personally. If you were banned before you got a red-bar, it's because the preponderance of users on the forum rated you negatively. The ratings bar appears at 50. If you have more than 48 negative ratings from users (each user only gets one rating), then you are automatically speed-banned by the time you reach 50. This means you likely really, really upset a lot of people on the forum. I've been on the forum for over 20 years, and have been shopping with the Fiero Store for over 20 years too. You just have to have a little bit of decency when dealing with people. I've managed to never get banned in 20 year, and have always had excellent support from the Fiero Store whenever (in very rare situations) I've had an issue.
Remember that freedom of speech protects you from government retaliation- not from private organizations or the people.
Incredible! Can’t wait to see it finished. You’re on your way to greatness!!!🎉
Great interview! Can’t wait to see part 2!
Cool interview, keep up the great work.
Awesome work Gen! Everything was fine until Max Verstappen came in the conversation as the greatest driver 😝. Gilles Villanueve is the greatest in my world! You prolly don’t know who he was!). Anyways, good work and since I know who Cliff is now I can buy him a beer!
Cliff! Awesome you got to hang out and do an interview. That forum is responsible for some lifelong friends I have now!
Great content and delivery. Keep it going and hope your subscribers grow.
Very cool. Opening you horizons in other countries is something many young Americans never get to do.
I agree with the go-cart feel. That struck me when I first drove my Fiero. Then after a bit, as I got more familiar with it, it felt like a mini-tank for how tough and sturdy it was.
Wow haven't heard his name in so long, I use to have a Fiero about 23 years ago and he had a forum I use to be on often, can't even remember my user name on there now.
So cool to see you do this interview👍😉
lil safety tip. direct the spring compressor so the spring is not aiming at your safety squints. I had a spring rocket out of one 50ft away from me across the shop. other than that solid work kid
This girl is GOOD VERY GOOD and smart.. If she can rebuild an engine she is capable of anything technical.
Send this video in to Motortrend TV and ask if they would like to feature her on a series of young car enthusiasts. Most of the gearheads we see on that channel are fat old guys. The channel could use a change.
Working on a historical piece of crap like this is not bragworthy. A Porsche 924 would have been more legit.
The 924 is definitely a cute car, but then I would have ended up with an even slower car. Slay...
@@GenerationZGarage Fundamental difference is Porsche has pedigree and the 924 offers some hope. The fiero has a long standing appointment with the car crusher.
@@ThunderAppeal I'm the dad. I've owned several Volkswagens and Porsches. I restored an 84 Porsche 944 5-Speed, and loved the car. I'm not really a fan of the Porsche 924, to be honest. The body doesn't appeal to me without the more pronounced fender flares... it looks more like a 1st gen RX-7 without them. And to the point, on RennList, no one really takes a 924 seriously unless it's a rare Turbo one, or a Martini and Rossi edition or something. I'm actually looking at a Porsche 914 (which is even more crap than a 924), and I'll know if I'll get it mid next week. I already have a spare 2000cc Porsche motor from my VW Bus motor swap. But these older lower-end Porsches, they don't really have pedigree man. Let's just be honest with ourselves... My daughter likes this car, all her friends think it's the coolest thing ever, and she's learning a lot. Try to be happy for someone without assuming the whole world needs to have the same opinions you do.
Can’t wait to see you driving it !!
I always look forward to these videos; they're informative and easy to follow.
Ford grey???
Originally she wanted hot pink, and I told her no. So she opted for Ford Gray as it seemed mostly stock, but still allowed you to "see" the engine detail when you actually looked at it. She didn't want black because then the engine basically becomes a "void" to which you can't really see anything. With the gray, the motor is still visible, and the upside is you can actually see some leaks if any start occurring.
AJ, glad to see you're back at work on the Fiero. I can't wait to see the finished product. Sadly, the time has come to say goodbye to my own beloved '84. It's a black SE with low miles. You can see it on Hemmings. So far, no serious offers. I'd be great to show it to you if you and your dad ever travel to Ohio. Good luck.
this thing is gonna run 9s easy
Hahah, yeah... in the 0-60. She loves the car and wants to keep it stock, but said that once she gets her real driver's license and finishes this car, she wants to work on a Fiero that has a bit more horsepower. So I promised her we'd build out a stripped race-only Fiero. Basically, we'd get an 87-88 Coupe, drop in a 4-Speed, and a V6, try to keep it within a specific class, and then gut the car minus the dash and door panels. We'll take something that's fairly weathered, and then she can use it at SCCA events.
Heck yeah! Keep up the hard work. My daughter is 4 and just now old enough to really start to understand what I teach her in the workshop. 👍🏼
Nice to see that you're still working on the Fiero.
Thank you so much, I'll have to do this on my 87 GT soon. I know these kinds of videos take a lot of work to make, thank you for putting this together.
Why did I feel like I was watching a video from my highschool automotive class, This just hit a core memory, thank you for that. 🙏
Great video
Great video series. I'm just removing my 2.5 Runs great on flat ground. 😂
As an automotive instructor for a few years now i can say Superb video. Mechanics are complicated, being able to properly teach mechanics takes mastery. Bravo
Hey I’m here with your Grandma she just gave me your TH-cam link 🎉🫡
Thanks for the video and my wife will have to help me with this project. I have not asked her yet. I am doing a condenser change. So much fun.
Thers,a all aluminum version of the iron duke and 153 Chevy II
This is interesting, seeing a woman probably a few years younger than me doing a rebuild of such a controversial, yet reliable engine.
Rock on!...
I am changing my ac condenser, oh so much fun. I am 68yrs old and am tired of working on my car. 87gt with no rust anywhere. Garage kept. I like your videos fiero's are cool
My fuel Guage is stuck on full.
Glad to see a fellow gen z er restoring a fiero. You are living my dream! Someday, I’ll get one too!
Another thing to check if you have a V6 is the air filter housing. Mine has rusted right through the bottom. I'm in the middle of rebuilding right now.
You're an incredible teacher and seem very comfortable behind the camera. Keep up the awesome work, you're going places!
I had an 84 Fiero 25+ years ago. Ran great. One of the things to remember is check your oil level often. The Fiero got such good gas mileage that after two tankfuls I could be running a quart low on oil from normal use. As the oil level got lower, the engine ran hotter. Then you had plastic fuel injection right on top of the engine which would sometimes begin leaking, causing the engine fires that plagued the mid engine design.
I liked the analogy/illustration you used for washing the parts; it certainly gets the point across!
Rock on...! Can't wait to see ya at the Freedom Factory...! Maybe some spectator drag runs...!? Anyway, keep up your awesomeness...!!!
You're doing great work, I'm impressed! Keep it up! ✌️
Super cool! I subscribed!
those pistons are massive lol compared to my D17A1 pistons
A pice of wood works just as good as the hammer
I am literally shocked that a Gen Z'r knows what an Iron Duke motor is. Awesome work.
Brings back memories of a couple of years ago when the neighbor girl and I rebuilt a Nissan Pathfinder 4.0 L V6 engine. it was her first time doing that kind of work but she enjoyed it and was really good at it.
Awesome job! Does my heart good to see young people learn how to work on their cars, you will never be at the mercy of someone else to get something done and will not only know it was done right but will save a metric buttload of money!
That's looking even better than Turbo Slug's engine! Nice job👍
