Load in for the load out, & FOH Bag Rundown
Tonight's show is a double header straight from your comment requests. The first part is about gig efficiency, and thinking about the load out during the load in. The second part is by request from some of my followers asking me to give them a rundown of my FOH bag. My bag of tricks is full of goodies that make what I do easier.

I’m always thinking of the end of the night!! Drop snakes everywhere and short cable runs!!! You are a blast to listen to and yes, I’ve had to gig with a torn meniscus . It is very hard work , late nights and early mornings . you’re the first one in and the last one out and then compound lights on top of this and then client requests for whatever silly thing they want . but it’s not silly to the client. how you get to be good and referred is by doing what people want , doing what you say you’ll do and doing it to the best of your ability with no excuses. Love you brother. We are C-COAST SOUND out of southern New Hampshire and we are a middle-market company like yourself. I spend hundreds of hours finding people that love pro audio and live sound… because if you don’t love it it’s not for you!!! Always protect your hearing and rock on!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

There definitely is a undefined line between tool/supplies for sound and stuff to help inept musicians who don't bring backup items. Instrument cords, charging adapters/cables, pack of typical guitar strings, etc. All of these have kept a show going provided by me when the band member didn't have a spare or forgot something. But, having a set of cheap buds... that's next level, JR.

Good advice JR. Thanks for your honest views on sound production. I refer to your start scenes as templates. Depending on the type of event or genera of music, I load the most appropriate template and soundchecks go quick. I also insist on stage plots. Programming console scenes for every band a couple of days prior to the event. So changeovers go well. I have however had a few issues. When musicians question my approach, even though their soundcheck and performance went well, they ask me afterwards how i managed to get through a soundcheck so quickly. Like some events where there are multiple bands, as many as 15 per day, things go somewhat smoothly. And it amazes me why some musicians become offended. Conveying to me that their music is more complicated and using a generic template to acquire the right mix is below them. So I stopped sharing my technique with others, until now. Regarding FOH bags, I knew a sound guy that carried spare guitar strings just in case for musicians. Interesting.

Hey JR, I’ve also had a bout with plantar fasciitis in my heel too and I want to put you on to something that might help with the pain. There’s a company called KURU that makes shoes that are designed for plantar fasciitis. You should check them out. I bought a pair to try out and in about a couple of days of wearing them the pain. I probably have around 10 pairs of them now and it’s the only shoes that I wear. I love your shows and I have a small sound production company in central Virginia as well as I am a bass player in a weekend band and I can relate to a lot of what you’re talking about and I do practice a lot of your methods. I also think that we have met many years ago when you worked at “Chuck’s” back in the 80’s & 90’s and I’ve bought tons of stuff from them over the years and I became friends with a bunch of the guys that worked there. I used to come up there and do some paintless dent repair work on some of their cars on several occasions. Any way check out the KURU shoes I think they will work for you. Their website is www.kurufootwear.com Keep up the good work! All the best. JERRY

Yay I'm not the only one with a construction style bag. Although I use a Makita Drill bag which is long instead of deep so I don't have to dig through the top layer of macguffins to get to what's on the bottom. Pencell cases are also grate for putting batteries & adapters in so they don't get lost in the bottom abyss + they are super cheap to make out of scuba knit material (that's a style of material - not wetsuit material) & a zipper.

Love your content. I'm up in NY, on Long Island. I own a very small live sound company as a side business generally servicing local bands in local bars and smaller venues. I run an M32C/S32 with QSC Subs and K12.2 tops stick rig. I totally know my place in the live sound hierarchy and I'm OK with the niche I'm in. I certainly don't have the resources, nor would I want, to get any larger at this point. I have to say that this may be the only place where us sound guys are not competing with each other. We pretty much know and help each other when needed. There is so much live sound work happening around here I actually have to schedule weekends OFF. Anyway, I can't agree more. Cable management and scene recalls greatly speed up the setups. The secret is a great assistant. Luckily my assistant is as OCD as I am. Ha. Like you mentioned, I have scenes saved for all the bands I work with. We run through a chorus or 2 for sound check and we're on our way. @antslivesound

Guitars, amps, effects, etc... yeah, I'll buy used. Sound gear? Hell no. I don't care who owned it or what it is. If I have a gig to do, it's my job to make sure I provide the best to my ability. That includes my ears, my back, my time, and my gear. That's my reputation on the line of I buy a set of "Gently Used" in-ears and they crap out mid-show. If I am at least known for having newer stuff and not buying dodgy crap then everything's just roses. Does new gear shit the bed? Yes , of course. But does it happen a lot less when I know where every single cable came from (I made the bulk of them)? Yes. Yes it does. Do I have the absolute top of the line sound reinforcement gear? Hell no. But I have a few really good PA's and my shit always works.

While I hear what you’re saying I respectfully disagree. I’ve run my business for decades on pre owned pro audio gear and the number one thing I’m most know for is consistency. But when I buy gear I tear it down and check it out. I hook it up and run it through its paces in the shop first. This is easy to justify when you’re saving 50-70% over new pricing and the best way to get the best ROI from your inventory. Many times I buy gear and use it for 5-7 years and then sell it for what I originally paid for it making it a very smart investment. If I only bought new gear I would have been out of business years ago. But I hear what you’re saying. Some things I only buy new like mixers, and some high end lighting. But everything else like speakers, amps, cabling, mics, DI’s, etc… I usually buy used. Just my .02 it is refreshing to hear another guy chat about system integrity tho. Kudos to you my friend. #respect.

Wow, 30 minutes talking about the Wing family without having a hand on it….. I have been working with the Wing for 4 years now and as I am mixing a lot of different events, bands, choirs, big bands with it, this is exactly what I need. The flexibility and versatility is great but you need to understand how to use it. I was waiting for the rack version for a long time now - just to have a backup console that works exactly the same way and to do the smaller gigs with the same system but mobile. I do not agree concerning the inputs location etc. I had used a Mackie DL32R for a long time. The problem here was that you had no chance to control anything manually on the console itself. No WiFi - no control. I appreciate having this opportunity on the Wing. Asking for 8 additional inputs is no factor for me. The Wing has way more input capability than only 24 local inputs. So I do not mind to go with my stagebox.

I don’t understand really, you throw an internal Dante card in it and it runs sound grid. as far as 96K when you’re runninin live in the medium environment, your noise floor in venue means only the sound guy hears it. Also Music tribe makes a front panel rack, it even has 10 independent channels of feedback suppression and genuine lexicon effects. $1200 enter the UI-24

Hi, I've used the x32 for a long time, I've never used the wing yet, I've seen the specs and the basic info about it, my first thought was that it seems very complicated, and easy to get lost in it, but the three features that really peaked my interest, was first and foremost is the ability to use plugging limiters, and EQs on each channel and output with out using up FX slots, then the tilt screen was nice, then (I know you had an issue with this) the small number of physical inputs on the mixer. I liked that because when using the snake, you're not paying for extra physical inputs that you are not using, as I said I've never actually seen one in person, so I don't have an opinion on the build quality, but I'll take your word on that, with the price drop i just bought an x32 compact, only to see the release of the wing compact a day after I received my x32, anyways, keep up the world

I think where the Wing makes a lot of sense is for places like my church where we’ve got one. Insanely flexible so you can make it do whatever you want it to. Size isn’t a concern because it’s a permanent install (though honestly the Compact would be great with our limited desk space). We’re running stage boxes anyway so no need for too much analog IO on the console itself, and the extra IO options like Dante and StageConnect make our life really easy and cleans up our band’s tiny area from having too many cables. I will absolutely agree that it can be an overwhelming console and often features are hiding from you but man there are features on that thing that I wouldn’t trade for anything now that I have them.

I looked at the x32 but couldn't justify the price compared to an x18 with the same amount of inputs. Now the wing rack has 24 in at the same price. And if I want 16 more input I buy a stage connect box for 300. So that is 40 inputs for under 2000 bucks. For my needs it is a dream, for my budget it is still a bit if a stretch, but well worth it. Still gonna wait till the longer term reviews are online 😂 that is another point though, behringer tends to keep the same models for centuries it seems, that means loads of users and huge community. And bug fixes long after the warranty has expired too

Greetings from Tauranga, New Zealand. You speak my language man. One minute I could be on something large format console with a line array for 5000 ppl. The next night I could be on some KLAs with a couple of TT+ subs on an Impact or a TF. If I get a choice I'll run an SQ or D-Live (I even bought a little CQ for small stuff). I'd love an SQ rack that is 24in20out, add a 16/8 rack and you could really take care advantage of all those stereo sends. That's my preference, but hand me a Yamaha, a Soundcraft, a Midas and I'm not angry. Anything but a Presonus or an X! But if a band arrives with an X16 based IEM rack, I get their choice. I'm just glad I don't have to use it for FOH.

I do miss all the choices the Behringer gives you for effects. Also the compressors have more function than the UI24. I do like how if anything clips, the app flashes a red C to let you know. I have never had any luck with the feedback eliminator. Does anyone?

I bought an SI Impact about 5-6 years ago. It was a floor display that Guitar Center was clearing out for $850. It's simple interface is excellent for a band who's never used a digital mixer before. It would be nice if it had a few more features, but is still serving me well to this day. The only reason I want to replace it is for the sake of quick load-in & space offered by one case, our band doesn't have a dedicated sound tech at the moment, so most of the mixing is done before a performance, and the console at the drums. I may ignore your opinions on the Wing and go with the new Compact (or maybe save up for an SQ-5 🤔).

JR, re the configuration complexity, getting lost in customization... yeah, it's possible but not alone; there are plenty of other, more upscale mixers with such enticements. When I saw a WIng (firmware 0.??) demo right before the Covid shut downs, it was followed by an DigiCo SD12 demo. There have been huge improvements to Wing firmware and feature set over the last 4 years and in several ways it offers a limited scope and scale of some DigiCo features, and I think Berry identified markets for whom that could be beneficial and set them apart from similarly priced competition. Does that mean some of the kids play with features they probably shouldn't? Yes. Too many plug ins? Sure. Great reliance on presets and menu choices? Absolutely. There are lots of fader pushers and knob twisters that make sound come out of the PA, not music. They probably can't mix with Kitchen Aid and Betty Crocker, either. As for "where did it come from"? I'm as lost as anyone. Delivered by the stork? Found in a cabbage patch right before a global pandemic? It arrived at a bad time, got little traction, and didn't solve any pressing, immediate problem in the market. Today with the X/M32 becoming teenagers, it's time for Berry to introduce something "new" ish and the Wing series seems better poised now that it has a 'family'.
