Great advice for small bands in small clubs. We all want to do things the big boys do but you gotta do things that work in your own circumstances.

We are a 5 member coverband and started to mix from stage using a Behringer XR18. I use 4 mics on the drums (kick, snare and 2 overheads). There a no amps on stage just kemper, keys and bass DI. 3 of us use InEars and 2 wedges for monitoring so the stage is not 100 percent silent. All signals are feed into the mixer. I record each show and use then the recordings for virtual soundcheck to refine the mix. Our soundcheck is more a line check because the mix is virtually set up.
My experience is it works good maybe not perfect. There were no complaints about the sound. The big advantage is the virtual soundcheck on digital mixers if you have a silent or almost silent stage.

I loved what you said about mixing to the loudest instrument on stage.. Back in the day, as you would say, I was more of a noise engineer, but mixed on the floor. The hardest job was keeping everything else in balance with the guitar player. Joe Guider would say, " Get it right at the source". If you get a good sound to start off with, it makes mixing so much easier.

I think you're right about the audience not caring so much. It's like the arguments about tube amps vs. modelers guitars. The audience will never care unless it's all guitar players.

We successfully mixed from stage in 1989. 2side fill monitors, 15/horn JBL, FOH 18-10/horn, no amps on stage, electronic drum kit.
Spectrum analyzer with audience mics and stage mics selectable with small mixer. At that time it was a Goldline led analyzer.

Thanks GSG for making this video, YOU da man !!! KISS, got it - we have a 3pc Turbosound system w/ 2 mains, 18" sub and cheap wedges w/ an old-school BBE sonic maximizer + crossover - "play it smart and mix around the stage volume" - 10-4... yep, our drummer and lead guitar keep pushing the volume level - we have 2 x real 58's, a handful of 57 clones, and a cheap drum mic kit, and it all works great - "overshoot the room then turn it down for fidelity" abso-friggin-lutely !!! Thanks for clarify, validating and advising on these topics - "good songs, good setlist, good energy" = a good gig - "adjust expectations to match reality... don't mix yourself into a corner or mix yourself to death" ... get it right at the source, and everything else is easier - "success in mixing is a hundred little things that you do correctly" - without the guy out front, you can still get it good, but nothing can replace a good "ear" mixing sound off stage - band dynamics can affect what's heard a helluva lot more than the sound system - thanks again for making this video - keep 'em coming GSG !!!

When a band has a guitar amp loud and far stage R, the people on House L are getting nailed with guitar. However, the people on House R are lacking. I will still mic the amp and only put it in House R and just enough to fill the gap. To me, FOH is first and foremost about sound reinforcement & coverage. Even coverages is the goal. Stage size, shape, and location relative to the listening area is very important when determining how to position and aim FOH speakers for best case coverage.

If you have a video with advice for band/performers to do thier own basic setup of default page/scene on digital mixer? If not THAT would be killer video from you!

I'm trying to open up a new music venue in my area. I have a landlord that might be open to the idea but he is concerned about the loudness.
My idea is to purchase the alesis strata drum kit that came out this year. That way I can control the stage volume a lot more with an electronic kit versus an acoustic kit.
What are your thoughts on that?

It’s live music it’s going to be loud. I’d find another location. Yes the edrums are easier to control but you still have guitar players to deal with. And it’s zero fun playing in a low volume venue. Save yourself the headache and find another location.

Keep it simple. I like it, even though I complicate things. I do prefer to run everything through the mixer, because I have played in bands where I can't hear what the guitarist is playing on the other side of the stage. I want everything in the monitors so everyone can hear what they want/need to hear without guessing.
