Thanks, I had this problem too and I thought i was doing something wrong.

No idea who this is
King, I want to see you succeed. You could've done some extra takes or cut out some of the "umms". Just make the video a little tighter and more straight to the point! Wishing you well :)
Thank you for the feedback! It is always appreciated! I’m still trying to figure out much detail is too much.
speak a bit louder please
Turn the volume up. I had it half way and he was pretty clear.
Could you share your truenas networking config for this too? I can't get my vm to get an ip
I don’t run VMs directly on TrueNAS anymore but you should be able to get a DHCP reservation if your gateway is set up correctly in your TN Network panel. If not you’ll want to check your router to see if you’re having any issues there.
Awesome video! I'm currently debating getting a MBP M1 Pro 16gb 1TB for $1,250 used or M3 Pro 18gb 512gb for $1,499, would you just go for the M3 pro or save the money? Thank you
I would personally spend the $250 for the new M3 Pro
Thanks for your support!
since the 10gb are directly connected did you have to use a cross over cable?
Regular Ethernet cables for me with no issues.
good job!
I try! :)
Thank you my friend
No problem!
Loving the content man! Keep it up!
Thanks man! Much appreciated!! 🤝🏾
In my country brand new m1 pro 16inch 10 core cpu 16core gpu 16/512 cost 2000 usd M3 pro 14 inch 11core cpu 14core gpu 18/512 cost 2100usd brand new. I like bigger screen ( this will be my first any apple product) can you please suggest me which will be better? Is 2gb ram extra on m3 will do the justice?
For the $100 difference, I’d get the newer machine! You’ll have longer support & newer hardware in general.
In the end Davinci resolve is not as good as they say, I want to work with the original files, using a video converter is not an option
Resolve Studio is fine. It all comes down to licensing which is outside of Blackmagic’s control.
Thanks for the Video, been looking into Nas's and never heard of Imzng. Learning something everyday!! Sub!
Thank you sir!
So 4:2:2 video works as long as it is h.264 if you upgrade to Studio? Is this what I'm gathering? I am currently having trouble viewing XAVC S at 4:2:2 10-bit, I am wondering if upgrading to studio will remedy this problem. I have an AMD Ryzen 3700x and NVIDIA 2060 Super, I am unsure if 4:2:2 is even possible
I record all of my videos in H.265 (XAVC HS) but but upgrading to studio resolved it, yes.
I have m1 air 512gb, need to upgrade for more heavier task. M1 pro or better in this case M3 pro?
M1 Pro should be enough for your needs. Half the cost too!
Good review. The M1 16" Pro is still a great machine. I have the same model as you and also a M1 Studio with 32 gb ram. In all honesty, while the Studio is noticeably faster, it's not that much faster. I do not do any video editing, at least for now, so both machines are fine for me for years to come.
Thanks Bruce! Looks like you have some amazing machines haha. Those two will be great for a long time!
Thank for the vid. It's strange that the old model is so good. Usually people like the new stuff.
Of course, thanks for watching!!
i really love my mbp 14 m1Pro 32 memory. i don't want to buy the new mbp m3. Great video!!
You got the best spec! Thanks for your support!
This is great! I think this is what people miss when comparing models, it would be such a bummer to upgrade from an m1pro only to discover it won't be much different
Thank you and yeah people usually assume the newer version is better!
@@johnstech7it's probably coz apple put in massive performance with the M1s to completely crush the intels
thanks MKBSD
lol thanks!
Thanks i was thinking to tradein my 16" for 14", you saved my money and time, thanks, keep up good work
Thank you! Thanks again for supporting the channel!
Why do you think 16 GB is less. Did you find any issues?
I’m not sure what you’re asking but the new M3 Pro machines to my knowledge use triple-channel memory instead of dual channel on the M1 Pro machines. I haven’t had any issues.
I CAN'T
This has been so informative and comprehensive. I do have one question though, do I need to tweak some settings in handbrake when transcoding vertically shot video? Thanks
Thanks for supporting the channel! For portrait video, the resolution should automatically adapt. If it doesn’t, you’ll want to swap the resolution numbers. 4K for example in landscape will be 3840x2160 and in portrait orientation will be 2160x3840. Let me know if you have any questions!
@@johnstech7 thanks
really great video, super informative. Film some B-roll of the machines and maybe showing some work in some apps to mix in with your talking points and you will start raking in the subs man. about to buy my first mac going from working on a surface pro 7 for YEARS. very excited. decided on the m3 pro macbook pro with 36GB RAM and 1TB, nice that it has a full sd card slot, will add a 1TB SD card to keep all of my data sets, and documents on.
this! B-rolls are very important. Just show close ups of the macs mentioned etc. Keep up the good work.
Great video. I have these two machines. One is personal and the other is for work. Only thing I like about the 14in is portability. I wish that I’d gotten a 15in MacBook Air.
Nice! A 15 inch MBA was a possibility for me as well but I’d rather have the SD card slot + performance.
timestamps for the video next time and more video on the product
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it!
BS
I laughed out loud. Thanks for supporting the channel sir!
Great review and channel! Good luck! Are you returning m3?
Yessir! M3 Pro was shipped back haha. Thanks for your support!
Great video and information. Try to avoid saying “this” and “that”.
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it!
I have 500 videos and davinci wont import. I cant convert 500 videos in vlc media or another app.... pls help
Did you try to convert them in Handbrake?
Great and honest review thank you, Im trying to decide if I want 14" or the 16" even though I have a large external monitor the extra space on the 16" is still a mixed bag with its heavier size.
Thanks for your support! I have a 16 inch and a 12.9 iPad Pro. I usually take the 12.9 when I need the portability but can go without a full laptop experience.
Very insightful 👍🏾
Thank you! 🤝🏾🙏🏾
Thanks for the noisy reminder of why I only use minipcs in my homelab... and yes, Proxmox Backup Server FTW!
Haha of course! Thanks for supporting the channel!! 🤝🏾
I had built up a nice proxmox lab but then the primary Node Nic seems to have stopped working somehow and my lab seems to be gone since I can't really access the second Node without the primary running for some reason. I have just slightly above basic Linux understanding and don't want to spend hours figuring out how to fix this and I have decided to rebuild the lab from scratch with newer hardware.
Ahhh I feel that pain. I’m so sorry to hear that but I hope the rebuild works better for you!
assuming the older macbook pro 16 has lower battery health, bigger screen = more power consumption, 4-5h of usage is good enough
Yessir! 🤝🏾
Great information!!! Stay amazing!!! 😊
Thanks for your support! 🙏🏾🤝🏾
Good luck with your YT channel John.
Thank you, I appreciate the support! 👏🏾🤝🏾
I'm confused I get it the power went out things went sideways so you didn't have a UPS before you got a dream machine seems like a cart before the horse thing
I didn’t have a UPS. I decided to switch to UniFi for simplicity + cloud management if needed. At the time, I was planning to roll out a similar firewall solution to remote sites and wanted to get something fairly resilient (one of the remote sites sometimes has power outages for 5-8 hours on end) as I won’t have physical access after it is installed.
in Proxmox what makes you decide to use a LXC over a VM and vice versa?
Hi, thanks for supporting the channel! I run LXCs for any service that sits directly on top of the system without another containerization system like Docker. From what I hear it’s possible to run docker on LXC but for stability reasons I’d rather run those as a VM since they would qualify as nested containers. VMs are for everything else!
@@johnstech7 awesome thanks for the explanation
Of course!
Hi John. Thanks for your awesome video! Its very advanced for a homelab, very skilled. I was wondering how you configured your offline and online IoT networks. Could you make a video where you take a deep dive into your configuration, networks and maybe advanced firewall rules?
Hi Daniel, Thanks for supporting the channel, I really appreciate it! I think I did a deep dive in this video, but I can look into revising firewall rules in a future video! I’m not a CISO so I’ll fine tune some of the rules to increase security at some point in the future.
@@johnstech7 Hi John, ofcourse! I really enjoy your video’s. Yes you did! I was especially wondering how you configured your off- and online IoT networks. Are you blocking ports 443, 8080 etc. on the offline networks? That kind of rules/routes i’m interested in. I’m also not a CISO but i’m very interested in network security. Thanks again for your time and hope to see future videos. 👌🏼😎
Hi Daniel, Good morning! I’m actually still using the simple rules in UniFi and not the advanced ones. All it does is block any traffic from the IoT-Offline & Management network that heads to the WAN interface. This also blocks clients accessing on a VPN as well so I added another rule that allows the Proxmox hosts to hit the internet. For IoT Public it still has access to the internet but I block traffic if it’s starting from the IoT-Public VLAN to Default or Guest, but the other way to Public is allowed. Any other traffic from Public to Management or Offline is dropped. Guest also isn’t able to talk to those Management & Offline networks! Also multicast is enabled so devices on Untagged, IoT-Public and Guest can find the AirPlay devices that are available. This doesn’t require a firewall rule.
@@johnstech7 Hi John, I’m going to experiment with this. Thank you for your explanation! Keep doing what you do. You put a lot of afford and care in your work. Its just a matter of time when you will blow up on the tech side of TH-cam! 😜
Thank you sir! 🙏🏾🤝🏾
I was looking at migrating to XCP-NG from Proxmox pretty heavily recently but ultimately decided to stay on Proxmox. I respect what the guys are doing on the XCP-NG/Xen Orchestra project. Both have their quirks and pros and cons. I like the backup solution slightly better on XOA but PBS is coming along pretty nicely. One pitfall I found on XCP-NG was performance issues when using an AMD Epyc CPU which is acknowledge by the team and they're digging in with AMD on it. No fault to them at all! I might look at it again sometime soon. Building from sources is kind of odd but there are other options like docker to run XOA instead of a VM on the host. At the end of it pick what is best for you. Interested to see future videos on Proxmox! Keep it up :).
Hi Tristan! Thanks for your feedback on the video! I really appreciate it! I think XCP has a slightly older kernel compared to the modified proxmox version so I assume it would tie back to that. Don’t quote me on that though! You have a good point on using Docker for XOA. I’ll look into that instead of cloning my VM from XCP. Thanks!
I've been working in IT for about 20 years. I started out in desktop and moved to systems admin to virtualization engineer. I have been mentored by a some of the best engineers and architects, some of which have been working IT since the 80's and 90's. The people who have helped me progress my career the most, were the ones that told me: The most important skill you can have in IT isn't a specific software or programming language or hardware or tool. "The number one skill that you can have is adaptability." Solutions come and go and admins become fossils trying to manage dinosaur solutions if they don't evolve with the times. We need more videos like this, showcasing that if a solution doesn't work for the needs of the environment, switch the solution. There are a lot of admins in the industry that will spend company budget trying to make a solution work, that ultimately wastes time and money. This was a really good video with a lot of really good lessons from the home lab to enterprise.
Hi there, I love this comment! Thanks for your words of wisdom! I’ve been trying out different technologies so I don’t become stagnant in my career. I’ve definitely felt some of what you said about companies sticking with a solution that just ends up wasting resources. I really appreciate you! 🙏🏾
well said. totally agree. i’m a 15yrs sys engineer/devops
I will start and say that I think you don’t know how to use XCP-NG and most of the things you mentioned at the beginning means that you couldn’t make it work. I understand why you switch to Proxmox and you he advantage it comes with but , it doesn’t mean XCP doesn’t have proper backups natively or compile things that you mentioned- good luck in your journey and do your homework. I personally worked many years with Proxmox and switched to XCP because of the enterprise capabilities it came with
Hi, thanks for watching the video! I know XCP is able to do backups and passthrough hardware! I just don’t want to manually compile Xen Orchestra while Proxmox has all of those features built in without a subscription. Also, I am running on some consumer micro PCs and those just don’t work that well for passing through USB ports in Xen..so that was another factor. I would frequently have to spin a VM for the deprecated XenCenter Windows client to run certain tasks just not available on XO just yet. I’m also running mostly Linux guests so I figured I may as well go with KVM. In an enterprise environment, I’d prefer XCP over Proxmox (if Nutanix KVM/AHV isn’t in the question) since I’d most likely be working with Windows guests (still not sure about how ready windows virtio drivers are) and less “sideways” tinkering required in the command line.
@@johnstech7 the XO from source script is dead simple...it literally takes 60 seconds to update...can even set it up as a cron job.
That still doesn't fix the other points I have. I'm not bashing XCP, Proxmox just works better for my use case.
@@druxpack8531 it’s working for me like a charm and onetime when a feature didn’t work for me, the Xoa team contacted me me upon a bug I opened and it was fixed on the following day ! And they followed it up to confirm it been resolved
How did you get jumbo frames to work on your MBP and what interface on the MBP are you using the jumbo frames with?
Hi there! I enabled Jumbo frames on my OWC 10GbE Thunderbolt adapter on my MBP in System Prefs -> Network -> (Interface) -> Details -> Hardware page. No special drivers/kexts needed. The NIC connects to my UDM Pro which also has jumbo packets enabled. I turned on switch exclusion so it has jumbo packets on the UDM only. The other device on the UDM is my TrueNAS Server (on the R740xd).
Misleading title. You didn’t actually show the set up. All you did was show where to go to start the set up…
Any updates on the car? Also, have you changed the head unit?
No real update, still stock! I experimented with some wireless CarPlay solutions that integrate into the rear mirror but those weren’t reliable for me. Not really interested in wired CarPlay especially when I can just mount my phone and get more functionality that way! My other concern is losing MDI (iPod) support, music info in the dash, the CD changer and it appears some GTIs suffer from battery drain from aftermarket radios.
its so informative bro thank u
Of course, thanks for your support!
Hi, your video was recommended to me on my feed and I have to say nice video and breakdown! I've started my homelab journey about 6 months ago, so this was actually a nice review from a more realistic and reasonable setup that's similar to what I had in mind, as opposed really expensive and complicated setups from big channels, so I really appreciate this honestly and I look forward to your future videos! Tanks!
