Thanks for doing all the talking..
Good to know thanks!
A great truth: signs of heavy usage usually telegraph better health than the pristine closet queens. I am inexplicably drawn to wear and crust...
good one
Nice! This hits closer to home for me as I have its successor, a Nov. 1974 SX-434 that was given to me in 1979 when I was 14. I had it restored to spec a few months ago and just love listening to it. But I couldn't stand LED on the dial lamps, the blue on X2X and X3X is just right and with the dial filter LED only ruins it. I left LED on the meter and dial pointer, they're fine, but the dial lamps had to go back to incandescent. And at 15 Wpc it doesn't generate much heat anyway. Ahh! Much better now.
I did something similar with my old BIC 960 in that I removed all the auto function levers and gears and now it is all manual and plays superbly. In a similar vein with a Technics SL 1300, the plastic speed switch broke and was stuck on 45 RPM...I cable tied the switch so that it plays 33 RPM permanently, a small sacrifice since I seldom play 45's.
Cant you 3D print a new wheel ?
I don't have a 3D printer but a friend of mine does.
I would love to try a 3d printer for some of these plastic parts that are no longer available. But cad isn't one of my strengths lol. And trying to figure out what kind of plastic to use. So many choices.
Schematics are sometimes wrong. Changes are made after production starts, and the service lit doesn't reflect it. Likewise, the markings on PC boards are sometimes wrong - especially regarding cap polarity!
BTW - Someone on one of the Facebook groups just got a KA-2000 and wondered what everyone thought of that model. So I said you've had a bunch of them over the years and posted a link to your channel. I have yet to see one in my area at all. 😆
You need some Solder Wick...I use a lot of it...!
Weather not good just down the road in London Bryan. Enjoy.
It's been cranky the last week!
I absolutely love the early germanium output TR amplifiers. Ive worked on quite a few, they sound different and have a wider stereo separation. That's one beautiful amplifier, the engineering is a state of art. I would love that nikko in my collection. Hello, uk.😃
I have a Knight KG-60 germanium amp waiting for restoration. So tube-like!
Hey, when you made these mods, did you change C6 to .47uF like the Dynaco TIP mod docs show? Did you change C1 to a 5uF tantalum?
I used a .47uf polyester and a 5uf aluminum non-polarized cap.
I have a GE Super Radio (SR II from the 1980's) that I take out in the yard or in the garage when I'm doing projects around the house
I have been looking for something like this with an 8 track in it but they seem to want more money than i am willing to pay. When I do listen to music on the porch I pull out one of my portable reel to reel machines. I really like them.

Happy new year, Bryan. Best wishes for a great 2025.
Did you actually make a mid-show Timmie's run??? 😆
Yes and a thrift store on the way back!
I think that's the most "Canadian" thing I've heard this week. If you were broadcasting on the air then interrupting for a Timmie's run should probably count as Cancon. 😆
Thank you for all the entertaining videos Bryan. Happy New Year.
Happy New Year, Bryan. Keep up the good work.
Looking forward to your 2025 videos. All the best in 2025 Bryan
Remember all Americans five 😊
Why would someone want a collection of radios that don't work? Crazy.
My dad collected old cash registers lol. Cool looking, but very heavy and totally useless.
In a way it seems kind of being freed up working on an old style chassis compared with circuit boards. The value and type of a component are what is important, not so much the size to fit on a circuit board.
I carefully use q-tips on the painted stencil side.
Your channel (and Skylabs Audio) is what we need more of on TH-cam, Helpful and authentic. Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
I like old radios. The few I have see almost no use as I am more into tape formats. Kind of hard having it as a hobby if you can't even recoup the money you spend on parts to make it serviceable again. I guess it's up to the people that really like this stuff, and can repair them to keep them from going completely extinct.
That's really cool to have local knowledge and family history with a company that involves your hobby. I'm in Detroit in the auto industry and have ties 3 generations deep - family that worked at each of the Big 3, Hudson, and Uniroyal - but I may be the last. I don't know offhand of any audio companies from Detroit, but across the state in Benton Harbor there was Voice of Music and Heath Co. that made Heathkit products. I recently bought a VM solid state AM-FM tuner and have an eye on a Heathkit matched tuner and integrated amp set.
Great dual turntables. What I do, is give my plateau a spin before the idler hits the plateau to protect the idler wheel from flat spots. That plateau weighs 3 kg. It's a dual 1229 bought for €20 that just needed degreasing and new lube. It also had the M75 type D card, but I changed it for a V15 type III.
Great idea to pre-spin the platter before turning on.
Good timing. I have a couple of those I need to work on. Mostly just from sitting too long.
I just finished restoring my Elac Mirocord 50H. Similar idler tire design. All steel. No plastic. A lot of cleaning and regreasing! It has the original cart and stylus. Sounds amazing. I need to pick up one of these for my collection. Its a classic.
Thanks Bryan. Very helpful.
I was just assessing one of these a couple of days ago. Massively overbuilt. The strangest tone-arm gimbal arrangement I've ever seen. All the grease was-yes- dried up. This video will help. I don't know why all these turntables are showing up. I've accrued 4 in the last month. Pioneer, Fisher, Dual.. I'm not even a turntable guy. The Fisher is just plan weird. Built by Sanyo. Very heavy and odd.
Thought it was a Hard drive from the 80s for a second.
A Dual 1019 was my greatest garage sale find. It came with the angled United base and a translucent brown dust cover. The manual recommends placing a cigarette between the platter and a record to see the superior tracking ability of the 1019. I guess everyone had a pack of smokes laying around back then.
A BC547 in the FM mixer circuit? No wonder how it didn't work! In the european semiconductor designator system, the C stands for low power and low frequency. It should have been an F series (low power high frequency), such as the BF199 that Radiomuseum suggests as functionally similar. That transistor would at least do something better than the BC547, but still would need fine tuning of the biasing to achieve the best of it in the circuit, when not using the original part. Btw, discrete bipolar RF transistors in through hole packages are almost extinct right now (only the KSP10... and the chinese 9018), and there is none if you want a PNP!
2n3663 was the closest match I could find locally but it didn't perform as well as the vintage 2sc535.
I'm holding a receipt in my hand from Feb 24, 1972 for a stereo system I bought while up in Prince Rupert BC. It included a HK 330A, Steintron speakers, and a Dual 1214 turntable. It shows I paid $119.95 for the TT back then which would be around $888.00 in todays money! It served me well but the TT started making a thumping noise a few years later which was annoying on party night with the volume cranked up. . The yellowish colored rubber drive wheel had a whitish color spot on its outer edge which was harder than the surrounding rubber and this was causing the thump noise thru the speakers. Instead of repairing it, I sold it to a friend who didn't mind the thump. I kind of regret that move as I still have the rest of the gear I bought that day long ago.
You don't see those every day. Thanks for sharing!
I appreciate every era of Fisher brand products, even my late 1990s 27 inch television. The later stuff is always fun or neat in some way, even if it came from Rent-a-Center.
Do you get any transformer hum on these things? I’ve got two of them, and they both have the tiniest hum at the speakers. Trying to decide if I should spring for the toroid transformers.
I know the hum you are talking about. It's coming from the ground lugs where all the black wires come together. They need to be all coming back to the same point and securely attached. Best, Bryan
Another great video👍
What’s the great big white blob on the left? You’re not trying to compensate for the high contrast are you.

Great topic. Thing is well chosen modern replacement transistors will usually be higher bandwidth, and better specs overall BUT will sound a bit different. Quite different in some cases. Higher bandwidth can even require extra decoupling etc. in old circuits. 70's transistors were made with different processes and thickness of material too. Also also, direct modern replacements like the 2SC5200's etc. are NOT the same as the original design and have a lower SOA. Manufacturers got really good at making thinks cheaper. When all's said and done it doesn't matter much if the unit works and gets to make music for another few decades!
The golden era of sound books, viewmaster...... etc. 😊
It's not that difficult to piss off Blackmore.hes a little difficult, rumor has it. But one of the greatest guitarist of all time in my opinion.
Beautiful machine ❤
Great show. Sometimes less is more 👍🏻
Great video! So would you say there could be a point on the volume control where it is transitioning from A to B that it would sound like "crap"? Thanks for sharing and would like to hear it when you get the other side done. Thankyou
In this case it was at 4 on the volume that there was noticeable distortion but past that it was clean. New caps and transistors with bias set to 15mv and there is no noticeable transition point.
