    A very important and relevant topic Emily! Thank you for drawing light on an important topic that needs more research. I wanted to ask if you found from your research any specific trpes of therapies or ways of coping for clients who express climate anxiety.

    Very interesting research, do you believe that individuals with different gender and sexual identities may demonstrate greater understanding and acceptance towards clients in a therapeutic setting? And how do you think these factors may influence the therapeutic relationship and the overall effectiveness of counselling? I would love to hear your insights on this topic!

    You've looked at anxiety and help-seeking but would there be a potential relationship between other psychological challenges such as depressive symptoms and climate anxiety? Is there an effect of age?

    • @emilygrainger9067
      @emilygrainger9067 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Connor! thanks for watching and commenting. Interestingly, I wonder if your question about the link between climate anxiety and depressive symptoms has been somewhat explored within research looking at defining climate anxiety. For instance Soutar and Wand's (2020) systematic review of qualitative responses to climate change highlights feelings of 'disempowerment' and 'helplessness'. Please also see Panu (2020) for more information on the debate on defining climate anxiety. Regarding age and climate anxiety, no significant effect of age was found on climate anxiety scores. I hope this answers your questions - thanks again!

    Hi Rosie! Really interesting study, thank you for sharing. Based on your knowledge of personality traits and gender identity, what do you think you would expect to see in personality traits of people who identify as non-binary? I see that you had a limited population which had to be excluded (which is very understandable), what do you think might be seen in a study focusing specifically on non-binary participants? Thanks again for all this info it has been really interesting!

    • @rodroo._.9
      @rodroo._.9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chloe, thank you for your question! I would expect to see that non-binary individuals would score higher in acceptableness and agreeableness, as research does suggest that those identifying within the LGBTQIA+ community are more accepting and agreeable. However, I have been unable to find research specifically looking at non-binary individuals, so am unable to give a set answer. I hope this helps provide an answer to your question!

    Great Lorraine! How would define the saviour complex?

    • @lorraineann1698
      @lorraineann1698 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Saviour complex is where individuals feel the need to be the helper. The downside of this is that in the process it allows them to ignore their own needs (Always trying to save people? You might have a Savior complex. Raypole, 2020). It can be linked to conditions of worth in missionary kids who are taught that 'it is better to give than to receive. (Acts 20 verse 5 in the NIV Study Bible). Furthermore but not addressed in this study it has been linked to colonialism and can come with a sense of feeling superior to others so obligated to help people less fortunate or inferior. See Rudyard Kipling's 1899 poem 'The white man's burden'.

    • @aishwaryakulkarni8277
      @aishwaryakulkarni8277 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the question. In terms of male population, the possible factor could be dance being perceived as an effeminate activity. Whereas, in other selected studies there were numerous factors mentioned such as personal and health issues, personal commitments, etc. Nevertheless one thing worth noting here is that nobody in the selected studies mentioned that dance intervention was the reason. Thanks!

    • @janeybrechin6432
      @janeybrechin6432 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi vicky, that would be very interesting especially for those in the visual impaired or hearing impaired community alike - exploring both visual only and sound only. As far as I know there isn't any research that has explored just sound or just visual and I think this highlights a bigger issue of our assumptions in how accessible counselling is and the lack of availability of services for those with potential disabilities. This is definitely a realm for future research which would be very interesting to explore! Thank you for your comment and I hope this answers your question!

  • @aishwaryakulkarni8277

    Interesting presentation Lorraine!! So what are the counsellor competencies in your opinion that would prove handy in dealing with trauma within the clients who are TCK?

    • @lorraineann1698
      @lorraineann1698 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all cultural competency is an important competency for counselors according to both the BACP and BPS. This is needed when counselling TCKs. Furthermore, acceptance that multiple losses such as constant moving, and changing cultures although seeming minor can lead to complex PTSD. Clients who are TCKs, also may have experienced civil wars and there may be a tendency to dismiss their own traumas so it would be handy to recognise their tendency to focus on others instead of themselves and gently validate what they have experienced has been traumatic. Encouraging self-acceptance and self-compassion would also be beneficial.

    I have close relatives with hearing problems and am personally hard of hearing in my left ear. It made me think about why I didn't include subtitles on my own presentation. What would your take-home message be for counselors when encountering a deaf client?

    • @izziewhitehurst
      @izziewhitehurst 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Lorraine yes I wish I had better understanding of technology to have used subtitles. I think it would be to have a flexible approach so that D/hh individuals needs can be met. or even to learn a small number of signs to demonstrate cultural awareness.

    • @carolinetreble612
      @carolinetreble612 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The results showed that self-awareness impacted positively on the aspects relating to positive relationships. This has been shown to be fundamental to well-being where as self-care practices in our study were shown to be detrimental to relationships so yes I believe that the relationships and our connectedness to other people are essential to well-being

    Very interesting Elise, impressed by your comprehensive and systematic methodology - well done. Do you think that exposure to music and dance in childhood could influence the impact of dance on depression in adulthood? I've just returned to dance as and adult but it was a large part of my childhood. I'm wondering whether individual factors may influence effectiveness and whether familiarity with music dance is important.

    • @elisegwilym6322
      @elisegwilym6322 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Lucy for this question, it was one of the first things that I asked myself - and the answer is probably not. The Alpert et al. (2007) participants were chosen from an existing Dance Group where they did adapted Jazz in Las Vegas for Older Women - but the results were not statistically significant. None of the studies showed that this was important or influential. I can surmise as to some reasons, one being that the trying is enough to be mindful and prevent rumination, and to create new neural pathways - it's not the succeeding. In fact, when we can do things 'without thinking' , we use less of the brain (as shown in Abutalebi, J., Cappa, S. F., & Perani, D. (2001). The bilingual brain as revealed by functional neuroimaging. Bilingualism: Language and cognition, 4(2), 179-190) as we gain mastery - not more! However, maybe the residual positive feelings of previous dance would serve as motivation and remembered pleasure in reengaging with this art form. I have not come across a study looking at this in particular, and it would be really interesting to look at it.

    Hi Claudia, why do you think that only 20% of foster carers consider leaving the profession, despite the myriad challenges they face?

    • @claudiaherman908
      @claudiaherman908 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think fundamentally they are a resilient and empathetic workforce who are able to prioritise the needs of their young people, often to the detriment of their own wellbeing. There are areas where carers report higher rates of considering leaving the profession. Particularly around aggression.

    Hi Caroline, great presentation! Considering wellbeing and positive psychology do you have any advice on how counsellors can help clients to flourish (rather than just get by?). Is self-awareness key do you think?

    • @carolinetreble612
      @carolinetreble612 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to our research it would appear so. Personally I would also agree that developing self-awareness is essential to personal growth and flourishing. Self-awareness allows us to observe, impartially, our thoughts and behaviour and allows us to regulate our emotions, ground ourselves and allows us to find calm amongst the chaos.

      Hi Izzy, thank you for your question, and for watching! With regards to it being a sensitive topic, generally speaking we did not face many barriers surrounding this, and I think this could be down to the fact participants were fully informed of what they will be doing the questionnaire on, and they were provided with support services in the event that they were distressed by anything that came up.

      The first and most startling thing I learned was that recent changes in Wales mean that any research proposals in Wales relating to social care must now be approved by the NHS ethics board. This poses a significant barrier to studying foster carer experiences. It frequently takes up to a year for NHS ethics proposals to be processed. Due to the demands of the covid pandemic the NHS pressed pause on processing applications. I am unsure why this has changed but would be interested to know the benefits. The risk is that foster carers remain an invisible and underrepresented workforce. I had the extreme good fortune to be able to use a data set that was gathered before this change was made. There are so many avenues for future research. When foster carers do have access to professional counselling support what is the impact on placement stability for young people in their carer?

      Thank you George. I did not however, research does show all environments are subject to facilitators and barriers, though the barriers can be more frequent and have greater impact on individuals with disabilities compared to those who don't have a disability. The idea into further exploring other groups within society would be a great starting point for any future research into the topic, and would be very insightful for counsellors and psychotherapists working with a specific group of people to ensure inclusivity within the service. Thank you for your question.

    Thanks for this presentation, Adam. It's fascinating and raises such a key barrier for men's mental health. I wondered where the ideas of traditional masculinity come from and whether you think there's enough done to try to raise awareness?

      The ideas of Traditional Masculinity came from what was expected in men traditionally in western societies. There is some communication with masculine norms in society, but they tend to be from quite a critical lens through terms like "toxic masculinity", but less so in a sympathetic non-judgmental sense, which may make men more reluctant to seek psychological help.
