Because car manufacturers want to do anything they can to save money and the excuse that of AM radio is not viable in EVs because of an interference from the engine that they don't want to spend money to solve. Basically saving money to keep the rich billionaires (such as Elon Musk) richer while jeopardizing U.S. National Security (because it relies heavily on AM radio to communicate in an emergency because it is likely to remain on the air during emergencies) not to mention muting talk radio on AM. There is a lot of backlash to this move because AM radio is NOT dead! There is even a bill in congress to require AM radio to remain in vehicles! It is far from dead. Some DOT agencies are using this excuse to make hasty decisions on eliminating HAR communication systems. Lake County PASSAGE is one of these in mind when they eliminated 1620 AM.

They are looping it because there is nothing they were needing to broadcast at that time.

@@travelerinforadiofan9566 that or the transmitter failed without MnRoad realizing it, latter last year the transmitter was having issues with the audio continuously cutting in and out.

I went through there recently and it was in fact shut down after at least 20 years of operating. The signage was removed :(

Some of these services in other countries do in fact have music. The problem is that the licenses for these type of stations in the US do not allow music besides as background music like with the Mackinac Bridge station message. These stations are meant for voice information and usually not intended for entertainment. You have every other FM music station to switch to for entertainment.

Probably if it is Votrax, it would be something from before DecTalk (a.k.a. Perfect Paul formerly heard on NOAA Weather Radio and what Stephan Hawkings used to speak).

It apparently fell off the air in 2020 in the mits of the pandemic (just around the same time the Milwaukee system went silent).

Yes, this outfit of stations in Canada were unique and that it carried more then a typical HAR broadcast (it was all the information you could ever want as a traveler). There were some above New York in Ontario (Quinte West, Brockville, Kingston and Cornwall) that featured segments with automated border wait times for the Thousand Islands border crossing that updated in real time like an automated HAR broadcast in the USA. Thunder Bay 90.5 FM and Muskoka 98.3 FM are the last of the style of Information Station. Muskoka is operated by Tim Hern who worked with the late Jack McGaw of Nova Scotia who founded the now defunct Information Radio stations in the maritime provinces (such as Halifax and the Confederation Bridge).

@@travelerinforadiofan9566 i wouldn't know if the station still exists or not the sign didnt have no flashing light for the longest time just to tell you to tune to 1610am. I moved away from the area where i grew up in 2015

@@fun456ful A lot of TIS stations seem to have left the air since 2015. Some of course some still exist like in my area. We have WQBR256 1620 AM and WPUR937 1180 AM which remain active.

In my area we lost WPTJ444/WPZK577 owned by the Wisconsin DOT. There was one site in Kenosha County with a looping message (much like the one you heard in PA) and then in the Milwaukee region, there were a bunch of HAR syncros that broadcasted a loop of automated travel times for the Milwaukee region 24/7 and was even televised at one time with CCTV (it was a joyful time when I could listen to that). All the equipment and signs was removed in 2022. I am waiting for the one known as WPMI800 owned by Racine County to come back and I am losing hope that it will return.

There are certainly some channels that air nonsense but some people like to hear the news and opinion on talk radio. Rather you like it or not, AM radio is STILL the backbone of our national emergency response. You may think that "oh my smartphone can do that so why do we need AM radio" but the truth is that the radio is likely to stay on the air even when other communication methods (like the internet and phone go down) during a disaster. The internet infrastructure is not foolproof (at least not yet) so it isn't right to disregard AM radio to internet services for emergency information (car manufacturers at the least are overlooking some major details and are being too hasty).

That may be the situation in your region. Not all regions are like the region you reside. In the region I reside, I get music in French, English, Spanish, Russian, news from United Kingdom, Canada, United States of America, Sporting events from UK and Canada, financial news, from New York City and the Royal Stock Exchange, and some of nonsense clucking hens and wannabe politicians. However, this is only the region in which I reside.

To each their own! There are people who do listen to AM radio and this move could hurt the industry.

I do know there are some AM stations that air music of different genres (Idk what your music preference is though). Though AM radio is usually talk radio, traffic, news, sports, etc.

I get good music in for different languages.

This isn't just a Democrat issue. Republicans are also behind trying to save AM radio in cars. Former Vice President Mike Pence is one who is running a campaign to save AM radio in cars.

Right. You can plug it in through your AUX jack, and it will play through your speakers. And they get better reception than the crap radios the car manufacturers use.

Well perhaps that will be next to eliminate AUX jacks if they continue with the trend they are by eliminating all the feature we have come to know (of course this is all speculation but I could see it being next to be eliminated). Then you can't listen to AM radio in your car at all even through an AUX jack. They need to just keep AM radio in the car period! It is something basic to ask for like providing napkins in a restaurant. I know the car manufacturers can afford installing it too! Sure it's old but it is still way more reliable than the internet in an emergency as radio will likely stay on the air even when the internet/phone is down (people are too hasty to ditch a very reliable asset that has been around for 100 years).
