i don't hate this emmett and i do think the grandma bootsie line is funy (i feel it's the one part of this version that could've worked in the broadway version) but imo, the broadway version makes the developing friendship throughout this song/eventual romance a lot more believable as the banter between them is more fun and friendly rather than snappy and irritable. i can't see broadway elle wanting to keep SF emmett around w how negative he is. broadway emmett is negative but at least he's fun and you can see why they'd develop a friendship bc he sees himself in her. emmett in the broadway version is a sweetheart and i'm so glad we ended up with that version of him. he's bitter and sarcastic at points (and a bit awkward) but not so much that he comes off as mean like he does here. the whole point of emmett is he's one of the first people at harvard to actually see her potential and show her kindness and even really offer her friendship.

I definitely loved how cleaned up and more funny the broadway version was, but I actually really liked Emmett’s sarcastic remarks. A ton of the comments don’t like it, but I feel like it gave Emmett a personality arc. He went from just helping Elle to really liking her.

So glad they added the “why do you always have to be right?” in the Broadway-version. It makes Elle be more appreciative plus it’s a nice nod to Take it like a Man!

Why are certain lyrics in this SF version different from the ones on the OBC recording?

In a lot of versions it's totally Kyle's fault. Like Paulette bent down to get it way before he did and it should have been obvious that she was getting it and he didn't need to.

His accent was slipping quite a bit.

It's amazing how different LBB's portrayal of Elle is in the SF tryouts compared to her portrayal on Broadway! On Bway she made Elle much funnier :)

I mean, the original lines were clever and witty, sure, but the new way comes across more like Emmett really is on Elle's side and less like he's haranguing her into doing the work. I know that approach never worked for me; why would it work for Elle?

Y'know, unlike many people, I'm actually not a huge fan of Emmett's original Grandma Bootsie and "I'm here every night" lines. I think the later version comes across more like Emmett realizes Elle isn't used to the amount of dedication it takes to succeed at Harvard, and doesn't really understand what it means to work that hard. In trying to make her understand, he's very firm, but never mean or bitter, and never makes her feel like a burden or like she doesn't deserve this. I like that better.

No! She doesn't have the pipes for that role. Also, she is almost too pretty and charming for the role, not mysterious enough. If Idina doesn't play it, they need someone with the voice. Lea Michele is a way better candidate than Anne Hathaway.

they should have kept the "I'm here every night" part it was cute!! but without it emmet seems more selfless so it's cool either way

San Francisco. When a show is headed to Broadway, they take it out of the state and do a couple weeks in another city to gauge response, iron out any kinks and employ any rewrites before it opens in NYC.

When they make the movie adaptation, here's my cast choices so far: Elphaba - Idina Menzel, Natalie Portman, or Emmanuelle Chriqui. Glinda - Kristen Chenoweth or Reese Witherspoon. Nessarose - Lea Michelle or Anne Hathaway. (I have yet to figure out the rest, sorry for any disappointments)
