Foundation Paper Piecing for Beginners | Sewing Help Hotline - Maureen’s Call | FPP Steps
Hey sewists! 👋 Today’s video is all about Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP)-a beginner guide inspired by a call I received on my Sewing Help Hotline from Maureen. She wanted to know how to get started with FPP, and I’m here to walk you through all the steps!
In this video, I’ll show you how to sew up a FREE heart pattern from Liza Taylor Handmade. We’ll cover:
- What Foundation Paper Piecing is and why it’s such a fun and precise quilting technique.
- Step-by-step instructions for sewing your very first FPP pattern.
- Inspiring examples of FPP projects I’ve made to get your creative ideas flowing!
If you’re new to FPP or just looking to refine your skills, this tutorial has you covered.
Be sure to call my free Sewing Help Hotline at 1-833-LETS-SEW if you have any sewing-related questions, and I might answer them in a future video!

How about a video what you use the cutting machines for & why 3, ? please & thanks. I have tho not used circuit maker .
@@dianedixon7548 great idea!
Glad I found your video! I’ve been thinking about this machine and been looking for a good video. Please consider maybe doing others for this machine.
@@angelahoffman6762 more videos are in the way! I just got my new one and will be using it lots soon!
I.really like nice and soft
Looks like something fum😊
Nicely done! Nice way to avoid tripping hazards
@@JeffAlvarez-zc6se thanks that is exactly why I installed it.
Retractable cords are not anything close to being new they are used in garages everywhere across the world you can buy them at Home Depot and Lowe's
@@dtroutmann you’re right. I never claimed it was “new”. But I did suggest it to be a great solution to cord management in a sewing room and sharing some inspiration for others who might not have thought to do something like this in their space. Just because you’ve used these tools before doesn’t mean others watching haven’t.
SO, SO SMART!!! 😍🤩
@@wahlstrom61 thank you. I have my moments haha 😆
My daughter made a blanket too
@@Julievet that’s awesome! This is definitely a kid friendly craft too!

@@MerissasYT this makes me so happy that you found my video helpful. Happy crafting! ❤️
Why didn’t you just increase one at end of charge to start your next row?
Thank you so much for such an informative tutorial on FPP! You made it so easy to understand! I can definitely see myself getting this bug! Love each project you made! What a cool idea to have the Sewing Help Hotline! ❤
@@kmkg2553 I’m so glad you found it helpful. Definitely give it a try. It’s so much fun!! Call the hotline anytime. I’m here to support your sewing journey. ❤️
Wow, I totally understand now! I bought some flying geese paper but have never used it because I didn’t know how. Thank you!
Beautiful color choices! I have a question 🙋🏼♀️ do you think buying industrial straight and zigzag sewing machines like SAW STRONG is better than two… straight and zigzag?
Thanks so much for doing this. It was so helpful. I've tried FPP, but got really frustrated. This video is great.
@@GayleWolken oh I’m so glad you found it helpful! I hope you give FPP another chance bc with the right education it is very enjoyable once you get the hang of it. You’ve got this!
Love, love, love, love the retractible extension cord!! I will be looking into that for my sewing space!!!! Thank you so very much for the tour. I am also going to use the marble Mac-tac for my cutting table. I have an old door with two Ikea drawer sets that are used for supports but the surface is all crappy - gets tea stains and needs to be painted again but that Mac-tac looks great.
@@rmac2489 I’m so glad you like the tour and found some helpful ideas to apply to your space!
Hey I recognize that callers voice!😂❤
@@SiahSwag 🤣🤣❤️

@@cassandracleveland thank you! One of my favorite makes!
I’m struggling to make my corners. They look weird. But I am hopeful with the videos you posted that I can figure out how to do this! Thanks again for being generous and sharing. I just want a kitchen rug, not a bowl 😆
@@sylverbullet1 pressing is key and doing it often. Go around a few times, stop and press using Mary Ellen’s Best Press. Let it cool completely before sewing again. Doing this will prevent curling of your rug and wavy edges. Don’t give up!
super helpful tutorial, will come back to this over and over again
@@seniz3 so glad you found it helpful! Thanks for letting me know your feedback!

Oh wow that’s awesome
Why were the stairs/wall shaking as you walked down them? Is that an older home or???
@@cicileigh393 haha no my camera shook on my phone stand as I walked by.
Great video. Can’t wait for all the wonderful tutorials.
@@debbiehays9794 thank you Debbie!! 🩷
I feel sad that basic sewing is no longer taught as a life skill in Junior High (Middle School) anymore. My son (he is 40 now) made a pillow in 7th grade and he still remembers the basics of sewing on a machine. But, as a teacher, you did a great job adapting to your class and doing what needed to be done to be sure all of your students were successful at the end. This elevates you from "teacher" to "educator." Good job!
@@angieallen4884 I totally agree! That’s why so many of us create sewing tutorials on YT to help those who want to learn or just try sewing. 🧵
Thank you for sharing. How if my yarn finish in the middle and I want to change color? Thank you
@@linawidhy you can change color at any point it will just be more obvious if not at a side seam. Same process as shown in the video.
@@CraftwithBethany thank you so much for replying. Have a lovely weekend from Denmark 💕
@@linawidhy you too! 🩷🩷

@@jadirar113 thank you for the feedback! Definitely more tips to come!
Try using a lighter to burn the ends!
@@jenniferearls3067 great tip!
Hi, FYI, you don't have this machine threaded correctly. I see at 5:22 you don't have the thread passing through the "pig tail" (curled metal spiral) of the bobbin tensioner. It's supposed to go through that pig tail either when using the a cone or spool of thread. See Sailrite's video "How to Thread Your Ultrafeed Machine - It’s Easy!" to see. Also, at 5:36 you should always spin the balance TOWARDS you, not away from you to manipulate the needle.

Your tutorial was soooo useful, Bethany. I do not use a Mac. Instead of "Acrobat", I just click "Menu" to get to my settings tab to change the line color. Thank you for the help and thank you, Candice, for the question. Pam in PA
@@ANotiontoSew so glad you enjoyed the tips in tho video. Thank you for calling in and the support! ❤️
I know this was two years ago but how do you wash this blanket?? I am making one as a gift and I don't want it to get ruined
@@mmartinez18 great question! I’ve washed my blankets in the washer and dryer several times with no issues. My washer does not have the center agitator so I think that helps not having that. Most yarn will have care instructions on the skein packaging as well. But I tossed mine in and had no issues. I use a gentle cold cycle.
I’m so excited for you and for your upcoming class!

Hello, I would like to ask a question? What type of yarn is good to hand knit a blanket, rather than chinelle yarn?
@@roxanneuduku7249 the chunkier the better for hand knitting. There are other types of chunky yarn available if you shop around. I don’t know any name brands specifically.
