I really appreciate your efforts to show us all of the knots. It was interesting but you need to redo the video with the camera centered lower so we can see the entire thing. Half was out of frame.
I appreciated the history info included.
Hey Travis how about the rope. What kind of rope. How long. How to rope. How to practice. I would be interested in that. Have a good one
I used a running w for a wild high strung Arabian. We hog tied the horse for 1 hour, it couldn't move. Afterwards it was very cooperative. However, we didn't ride the horse for 6 months and it turned wild again. We ended up selling it at an auction.
Horse looked down like “ uhhhh I think you forgot the rest of connections…”
Leanred something! Thanks for the info.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I love your channel and appreciate your feedback. Cheers- Travis

Nicely done
Thank you for watching this episode. Happy New Year!
Love tradin, too bad it's hard to do online now. Scammers are bad enough, but the IRS is counting anything over $600 YEARLY as income for 2024 onward. They're doing it through all the pay apps which are required to report transactions to that bunch of grifters. Heck, if a person sells 1 decent saddle online, that's over $600. We have the actual resellers who've been doing business for years and not paying taxes to partially thank for this ridiculous change. So back to in person cash only which is tough when you live rural.
I tell ya, IRS is horrible and unjustified in their reach of grabbing the common mans hard working money.
2024 is almost in the books, so I wish ye a prosperous New Year for tomorrow, mate!🧨🎇🥂Champagne to yer real friends, and real pain to yer sham friends, eh!
Happy Near Year to you too. Thanks for leaving a comment and best of luck in your future endeavors!

This was so interesting. I likewise have a great mare that will never be a bridle horse, but needed to get out of the snaffle. Since she's got a very wide, fleshy mouth, it was impossible to find bits like this in a 5 3/4. I found the Linda Tellington western curb in that size and it was pointed out to me that it's just like a Sliester. So thanks for this. Makes so much sense, and yes the bit has been a game changer for her. I plan to put some chains on it, spread the hanger rings on it to get a bosalita in there. Great video.
@@kerryobrien1961 Howdy, thanks for the feedback and leaving a comment. Fantastic news on your selection of a bit. I am wishing you and your horse the best. Cheers- Travis

Maybe u ought to hose poop off 1st for a better connection? Good idea though
@@dl2467 That is a good idea. I have found that where the break is, it is a clean site and then weld it together with no issues. A little poo hasn’t hurt anything yet. But it sure has the potential. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and watching this episode. Cheers- Travis
100% inhumane and not real training. shame on you.
Very interesting video and I certainly understand why it's important to do this exercise with a horse. But I always think about what could go wrong, so of course I'm wondering what if the horse lost his mind when you did this and took off running, dragging that huge long lariat behind him. Wouldn't that scare the sh*t out of him even more? Esp since you said he'd never had that done before. So if I were to do this, it would be with a much shorter rope AND I wouldn't actually wrap it around his leg the first few times; I'd just put it behind the pastern and pull til he lifted his foot. So if he took off, the rope would just fall to the ground. Then when he was cool with that, wrap the rope around, but still short... Just a thought.
Hello, I have had horses loose their mind as you put it. The nice thing is that with a rope the same length of the round pen or longer, it is almost impossible for the rope to be lost out of your hands. When you have a very short rope, the horse is able to run away from you in very quick order. then when you get close to the rope to pick it up, they take off again. Not a very good way to regain control of the situation. I also like a very long in case it does fall out of my hands. I can easily pick up the tail end while the horse is running loose and start over again. No harm, no foul. I have done this technique and procedure with hundreds of horses without them getting hurt or tangled in the rope. So no worries. Thank you for watching this episode and leaving a comment. Cheers- Travis

Hello! I am working mine through this myself and found your video looking for some advise! I’ve got two mares doing the same thing. They are tending to freeze up pretty hard. Most of my other horses went textbook well! I Tried progressing through pressure but I’d end up beating them on the ass with the stick and not getting any forward and that just felt unfair. They even ignored the flag. Can’t even get a disengage they are froze so solid. I was able to go diagonally and pull them off balance to get a step and when I did it was an explosion lol. Just trying to show them they can hop around like that and be ok but man it’s a battle to get any forward. I would get a lick and chew head shake/ low head so I’d go ahead and take it off them, but that was happening after they had a chance to explode first.I’m just not getting enough calm forward. Thank you for reading I appreciate it!
Howdy, sorry for the lateness of the reply. The follow the feel that you see on this video (1:02:02 time stamp) helps make them move their feet and become unstuck and right before they straighten out I drive them with a lunge whip. This seems to help them gain movement. I will only ask for a step or two on the initial push out of the uncorking. If this doesn't help you out, you can send a video to me on messenger on Facebook. My platform is Elliston Equine Solutions, LLC. I can see what is going on and give you a good game plan with an answering video. Thanks for watching. Cheers- Travis
Do you prefer them lower or high?
Howdy, Great question. Having them set lower secures my thighs better for traction when a horse gets “western” on me. I think this gives you a slight advantage over the higher position setting. Overall, I think it is up to the rider's discretion on what they like better and are comfortable with, ultimately leading to not needing them on their slick fork. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Cheers- Travis
Could you use a chain instead of rope?
Howdy, Some folks use chains. Some folks use a combination of chains a yard in length from the picket stake connected to the rope. This helps the rope from getting tangled around the stake. Ultimately, a chain gets too heavy to haul into the backcountry. Also, rope is cheaper than chain and doesn’t possibly strain the horse's muscles with the weight due to the length needed to picket. The U.S. Cavalry, throughout history, has always used rope, and so do livestock packers. I have always wondered why if the system isn’t broken, it should be fixed. What is good for them is good enough for me. Thank you for watching the channel and for the question. Cheers- Travis

Have you guys ever considered a doing a video on how to break a horse to packing? Be it packing out game, hay bales, etc. lots of videos for knots, etc but nothing on how to desensitize a horse to the load and so on… thanks great videos
Howdy, funny you mentioned the start of a horse packing. I just did this with one of my horses recently and took it up to the mountains in Wyoming for 10 days.. Didn't record it though. I do have another horse in the hopper that we can use for a video though. Stay tuned. I will work on it this month. Cheers- Travis

Bear trap and lightning buckle. My grandpa ran cattle in the kaibab and Escalante staircase of southern Utah. Not sure if he was single or double rigged. My dad had never seen a snaffle bit till he was 15 years old. At the race track.
REAL cowboys slide one of their wife’s maxi-pads under the hat band. It improves friction and keeps the sweat from running into your eyes. 😂
Great video . thanks. From Vulcan Alberta Canada.
I would love it if you could show the rest of those reins close by. I would like to try make one. Thanks
I've been looking at hat makers that heavily distress hats. One had a waxy look to it in areas. I was wondering if they might be using this technique. That is how I found this video. Any thoughts?
Howdy, I wouldn't imagine that they're using this technique. I would think that they are using a lacquer to hold the hat into position for shape. This is common with cheaper hats. Now mind you, since I haven't seen the hat you have spoken of... this is just a theory. Thanks for commenting and Cheers - Travis

What size are the ones you demonstrated even for the Clint Eastwood?
Years ago my farrier handed me a horsehair switch when l asked him if he had any fly spray. He was a great horseman as well and taught me how to shoe horses.

I'm surprised that the cinch latigo is so long! So much left over to deal with.
Howdy, every troop is different with their standard operating procedures. In this outfit, the multiple cavalry troopers switch out every one to two years. Because their assigned horses are of different sizes and new riders seat size are different and they are assigned to based off of their temperament, and riding capabilities. They get paired up with a horse that will be best suited for them. This means saddles are not just for one horse in a unit. Therefore the tie straps (latigo) must be kept longer for the bigger horses. As the old saying goes, " better to have and not need, than to not have and need." Thanks for watching. Cheers - Travis
This is extremely helpful for folks who are on a budget and want to do it themself. The detail helped a lot, because ones started, there are many little questions that come up that one does not even think about- thank you very much for putting this together.
