A very informative and well-reasoned video about passage planning from my part of the world (near St. John's). I'm dying to sail the "Viking" route to the UK, but not many boats leaving from here do it. It'd be my first choice, just need to find a boat who needs another crew member.
Glad you found the video useful and took time to comment / let us know. The Viking Route is a very cool adventure - surprised not many boats are doing it. There is a group on FB "Viking route" check there for crewing opportunities - Hope you find a yacht

Danke sehr for tor the comment. Will we see you there this summer?
@ I am afraid, not before 2029. You will rather find me fly fishing for sea trout in DK.
This was excellent !! I do confirm all your proposals. For west to east would you recommend the Nova Scotia route with a catamaran? Kr Renaud
Dear Renaud, Thank for the feedback - very happy that you liked the video and it made you consider the Northern route via Nova Scotia. I dont see an issue taking a Multi hull back to Europe via NS & Newfoundland. As with all passage making, you need to make sure that you have time to wait for a good weather window, being on a tight schedule may get you into trouble. I take your question / concern is the sea state. There is plenty of fjords and bay in Newfoundland that you can explore / wait in until you get weather window with calm seas as per your comfort. The passage to Azores is "just" 1200 nm, so you just need a 4-5 days good run, then you are closer to the Azores / Azores high with is usually has calm seas. ( You can get blow here too, so keep a eye on the lows coming from US). I am working on next YT video, which will cover the northern route in more details, incl some recommendations on exploring NS & Newfie - should be out soon. Don't hesitate to contact us, if you have any questions. Contact details in the Bio.
@@Saga47swanSailing fully agree , safe sailing is always about waiting for the perfect weather window

Thanks - Do what you love and you dont have to work ;)
Great video! As a former paraglider and light aircraft pilot I find weather super interesting. Even though one can master the theory, I find that it usually takes a lot of experience to reach a resonable level of prediction accuracy based on visual cues. Maybe you can end your little mini met-series with some macro- and local predictions and see how well they match with what you’re actually seeing on the ground? And maybe more importantly - when they don’t! 😊 Keep up the good work!
Cool, thanks! Thanks for awesome feedback - very encouraging. Predicting weather from visual clue is very powerful skill to have. I am working on cover this too, but it is not easy to make it into a chewable bite ;)
That’s a great lesson I appreciate your input Thank you and happy new year to you and family

Verry happy that you found the video helpful. Thanks for letting us know.
Happy new year and thank you for the informative video Chris, this is really useful. I’m personally interested in offshore weather, how to get it and how to interpret the data. I’m not too familiar with this but I have heard of terms like downloading GRAB files, iridium, etc. I.e. let’s say you’re off onto a west to east cross Atlantic passage that will take over 10-14 to complete, you will probably use Windy to get a nice 3-5 day window before you set sail but what will you do once you’re well offshore without any internet connection (assuming you don’t have Starlink). Cheers 🍻⛵️
Hi Akrim, That is a very good and a huge topic. Most sailor, novices to experienced rely on Data , grib file and weather routing software. If you are at sea , offshore , and your internet stop working, then a good understanding of weather , forecasting from clouds, change barometric pressure and shifting wind direction , can tell where you are in relation to an incoming depression, and if you need to prepare for a blow. I shall endeavor to make topics like getting gribfile offshore, , weather offshore, weather routing into "bite" size videos. Thanks for your good topic suggestion and taking time to let us know you found the video helpful. see you at the high seas
Plus 1. :)

I concur that was a very excellent video. I’m getting catana OC 50 and I look forward to any crossing and I’m gonna try both of your routes in each direction.
That's awesome - we look forward to hear how the crossings are going. Will you take the northern route via NS & Newfoundland back to Europe? We are very happy that you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching and letting us know. see you at the high seas
, I think I’d like to try them both at some point. I think the northern route would be more scenic. As long as it was not too cold and the ocean, too rough. It would also allow me to do the trip in stages. Like take the boat to Boston fly home and work for a week and then take it to Newfoundland and do the same and then take it to the Azores and do the same. At this point in my life, it’s not easy to just take a month or two off all at once. Thank you for your wonderful video
Yes agreed this is definitely worth saving this video....... Thankyou for valuable information......... Regards Nick

sweet - So pleased that you found the video helpful & Informative. Thanks for the comment
Excellent recap, my boat is presently in Baddeck getting set for the West /East crossing. A number of good yards in Cape Breton area for preparation.
Please you enjoyed the video and thanks for the comment. We will be coming to Newfoundland in June 2025. Going around the north coast to Madeleine Islands and PWE. Any cruising information, your best anchorages and must stop overs, will appreciated. Planning to go to Nova scotia (Halifax) via the Strait of Canso, not exploring Bras D'Or Lake. Hope to meet you in an anchorage for a wee dram and swapping of tales.
@ If you arrive in Madeleine Islands during during lobster season keep a very sharp lobster pot lookout and be careful as some of the lobster markers have line stringing multiple pots together. The Marina and village at Harve Albert was wonderful, entrance is narrow but very navigable, note the isophase light at Pointe a Fox to guide you through the channel to YK22. I sailed around the island of Ile Dentree, as beautiful as the island is the fishing fleet was NOT pleased with my rounding the western side. Recommend the pass between Sandy Hook and Ile Dentree:-). We stopped in Port Hawkesbury after the Canso Lock, nice marine. In PEI we stopped in at Souris Marina, they were undergoing installation of new floating docks friendly staff. I would be careful if dropping anchor during the lobster session. The fisherman make the waters choppy to tell you to find another spot. IF you do decide to go into Bras D’or, phone hours ahead to the Burnt Point Bridge to make sure it’s working. Safe travels.
Not the horses 😭😭😭
What a great video. Thanks for creating it!

Thanks for the clear and simple information with graphics!
You're welcome! thanks for taking time to watch and comment
Hi! Thanks for the video, very informative, have already saved it. I was wondering if it is a viable option to sail from Newfoudland to Greenland, Iceland, then to Faroe Islands and the UK. It'd probably take longer, specially for the views, and the arrival in Europe would be close to winter. Does the weather gets harder by this time there? I'm from brazil, so i have really no good idea of the weather so far north. Thanks for any input. All the best and fair winds!
Yes, it is a very viable option - It called the viking route and is an epic adventure. The longest passages are about 600 nm - Labrador to greenland & Greenland to Iceland. One would cross in July - Spending 3-4 months sailing Greenland - Iceland - Faroe - Shetland. You could winter in Scotland, then spend next season exploring the west coast of Norway. Follow your dreams

Just be aware that you will get a LOT of fog in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
Absolutely and I should have made mentioned it in the video. Due to the warm gulfstream, one gets a lot of fog in the spring and early summer in NS & Newfie - Having a radar is a must. That said, we cruised from end of may to end of July and only had the odd day of fog, quite a few mornings were foggy, but it would clear before lunch. Good point - Thanks for taking time to watch and comment
