Yes agreed this is definitely worth saving this video....... Thankyou for valuable information......... Regards Nick
Hi Nick, Thanks for taking time to let us know that found the video informative.
Are you Danish. I thought I saw your boatin KBH once and your accent
Ja, Jeg er dansk;) Yes, fra Snekkersten, where I started sailing at age 6.
What if we want to go to Northern Europe, like Scandinavia and Germany?
That's a really good question. I am working on the next video in a serie of "how to master". When you say" go to northern europa" do you mean from the Caribbean ?
@ well, I could imagine 3 starting points. Central Caribbean, Florida, NY
Noted. I will cover US east coast to Europe in the next video.
Great explanation.. Thanks for sharing Circling the atlantic is a dream
An Atlantic ocean circuit is a real bucket list adventure - Follow your dreams Thanks for watching the video and taking time to comment - very happy that you liked it.

Absolutely :) So many people found this video helpful, which is very encouraging for me to share our experiences and routing tips.
great video, thank you
Glad you liked it - you are most welcome. Thanks for letting me know
Video saved for future reference!!! Thank you captain!
sweet - So pleased that you found the video helpful & Informative. Thanks for the comment
Excellent recap, my boat is presently in Baddeck getting set for the West /East crossing. A number of good yards in Cape Breton area for preparation.
Please you enjoyed the video and thanks for the comment. We will be coming to Newfoundland in June 2025. Going around the north coast to Madeleine Islands and PWE. Any cruising information, your best anchorages and must stop overs, will appreciated. Planning to go to Nova scotia (Halifax) via the Strait of Canso, not exploring Bras D'Or Lake. Hope to meet you in an anchorage for a wee dram and swapping of tales.
@ If you arrive in Madeleine Islands during during lobster season keep a very sharp lobster pot lookout and be careful as some of the lobster markers have line stringing multiple pots together. The Marina and village at Harve Albert was wonderful, entrance is narrow but very navigable, note the isophase light at Pointe a Fox to guide you through the channel to YK22. I sailed around the island of Ile Dentree, as beautiful as the island is the fishing fleet was NOT pleased with my rounding the western side. Recommend the pass between Sandy Hook and Ile Dentree:-). We stopped in Port Hawkesbury after the Canso Lock, nice marine. In PEI we stopped in at Souris Marina, they were undergoing installation of new floating docks friendly staff. I would be careful if dropping anchor during the lobster session. The fisherman make the waters choppy to tell you to find another spot. IF you do decide to go into Bras D’or, phone hours ahead to the Burnt Point Bridge to make sure it’s working. Safe travels.
Not the horses 😭😭😭
What a great video. Thanks for creating it!

Hi! Thanks for the video, very informative, have already saved it. I was wondering if it is a viable option to sail from Newfoudland to Greenland, Iceland, then to Faroe Islands and the UK. It'd probably take longer, specially for the views, and the arrival in Europe would be close to winter. Does the weather gets harder by this time there? I'm from brazil, so i have really no good idea of the weather so far north. Thanks for any input. All the best and fair winds!
Yes, it is a very viable option - It called the viking route and is an epic adventure. The longest passages are about 600 nm - Labrador to greenland & Greenland to Iceland. One would cross in July - Spending 3-4 months sailing Greenland - Iceland - Faroe - Shetland. You could winter in Scotland, then spend next season exploring the west coast of Norway. Follow your dreams
@@Saga47swanSailing Thanks!

Just be aware that you will get a LOT of fog in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
Absolutely and I should have made mentioned it in the video. Due to the warm gulfstream, one gets a lot of fog in the spring and early summer in NS & Newfie - Having a radar is a must. That said, we cruised from end of may to end of July and only had the odd day of fog, quite a few mornings were foggy, but it would clear before lunch. Good point - Thanks for taking time to watch and comment
@@Saga47swanSailing having sailed there without radar I’d agree with you!

@@Saga47swanSailing Yes
I am not expert in sailing but this boat seems to be very small and dated for the ocean crossing..i have seen the specs and also the engine seems to be small to push the boat against streams and wawes.
Our sailing yacht is a Swan 47 , built for ocean racing in 1978 - in those days, yachts were built to last. As we are a sailing yacht, the engine is mainly for docking the yacht in the port. Thanks for watching the video and comments. If you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask
hi guys, thanks for this, really an excellent video! now, please, we need the same for a pacific circuit! haha!
@samzinacollins2332 We just looking at the pacific…… it is huge 😉 we will be going there in 2027 via Easter Island and Pitcairn. The options for routes is crazy and understandable that cruiser spent several seasons there. Good idea to make some YT about it, would probably be like eating an elephant! Check out S/V soggy Paws website - lots of good information about the pacific. I am pleased you liked the video and found it helpful. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Where are you cruising now?
Great video, thanks. What would be the best window to cross from Newfoundland to Azores. Is it the same window you mention from Bermuda or differs from that?
@@tommivainio1945 Hi , it is not the same window, which makes the route via NS and Newfoundland so awesome - you leave Bermuda in May, then you can cruise in NS & Newfoundland until end of July. I talk about it at the very end of the video. It is only 1250 nm , leaving just after a low, before the next low. We had great sail all the way to Flores in the Azores. Flying the kite the last few days and not motoring at all. Thanks for taking time to Watch the video and comment - much appreciated. Cheers

Thank you for answering my asks, a family member is traveling soon with a team of professionals from canaries to Carribeans and I found your comments to my questions very useful like the video. Thank you again for tanking the time :-)
To say it short: Horta, Azores is the core of ocean sailing!
@@peterebel7899 YES , we love the Azores - spend more than 5 months there cruising most of the Islands , all islands are beautiful and different. Our favourites are Santa Maria and Terceira. Have you been there recently?
@@Saga47swanSailing I was there twice in the last years hiking & mountain climbing (a stop at Peter Sport Cafe included every trip ;-) The island of my heart: Flores And we started a leg on a tall ship in Ponta Delgada several years ago (via Cobh to Saint-Malo). But I never made it with a "normal yacht" to these waters. Yes, the Azores are beautiful, diverse and in the middle of a lot of passage making.
@ Flores has a very special place in our hearts- we made landfall there in 2022 - soooooo beautiful, easy to understand why they named it Flores

Very good video thanks. We are crossing this January coming towards Santa Lucia ⚓⛵❤️
@ViajerosPorMaryTierra thank you for letting us know that you liked the video - highly appreciated. Will you go via the Cape Verde Islands ?
@Saga47swanSailing no, we will go direct heading to saint Lucia. What bearing do you think we can head towards straight away from Tenerife, would 241° be ok or would you think we would have to point further south first ? (I looked at that bearing to try to make it as short as possible)
@ difficult to say as it depends a lot weather system / location of the high, when you are leaving. Don’t forget to check the CAPE index in the weather models , the weather can be quite unpredictable / unstable around the Canaries. safe passage
@@Saga47swanSailing thank you very much. Checked your Chanel an I love it ⛵❤️⚓ all the best 🙏🏻
Thanks for answering, my question was rather on is there some rescues procedures during the sailing ? Ie any communications for help ?
@@alexandrec.6843 YES! You will need to have means of communication to reach the emergency services, if you have problems. Satellite phone, EPIRB and SSB radio are usually available on a yacht equipped for ocean sailing. Furthermore, it is a good idea to file a float plan with a person onshore with information/ instructions on what to do, if the yacht does not arrive at the destination as expected.
Use Pilot Charts
@@rasputitza yes, few people know about pilot charts - they can be download free on the internet- I used the April pilot chart in the video to illustrate the risk of encounter a gale on the passage back to Europe. If you have PredictWind you can find pilot charts there, based on the last 10 years average. Great way to find the best season for a passage. What tools are you using ?
Thanks very educational. Do you think it is dangerous ? What are the risks if there is some issues during the crossing ?
@@alexandrec.6843 There are of course risks like every you do in - a commute to work can be quite risky too ;) . For offshore and ocean sailing there is some risk of life and vessel, but these risk can be minimised with a proper equipped vessel and an experienced skipper / crew. For offshore sailing you plan for the worst and hope for the best. With today's technology, one can get very good weather forecast, minimize the risk of encounter bad weather. Have you sailed across an ocean ?
Tak
@@jsveb5373 superb at du kunne lide vores YT. Planlægger du en tur over Atlanterhavet ?
Excellent recap of the routes and timing. It has me really considering exploring the northern route to Europe. Many thanks!
@@markribkoff Thanks for letting me know. Yes, the northern route is awesome - we enjoyed Nova Scotia & Newfoundland so much, it was one of the highlights of our Atlantic circuit. We are going back to Newfoundland & NS in 2025 to cruise the whole season there . When are you planning to set off ?
@ no set plans currently as I’m between boats. I’m based on the westcoast of the USA. Deciding now between buying in Europe or the east coast of the US. We shall see which way the wind blows me in a few months.
No mention of the Azores to Newfoundland route (East > West) .. ? I was really looking forward to that. 😁
@@AllanDrJones That route is a bit orthodox as it is a bit uphill - expect wind in front of the beam for part of the passage. That said, if you are not on a tight schedule, then the right weather window will take you swiftly across this “shortcut” route to North America. It will also give the option to visit and explore the western most islands of the Azores, especially Flores ( meaning flowers ) is amazingly beautiful. We can have a zoom chat about it after Xmas. I am just doing the final planning for our 2025 Ireland - Azores - Newfoundland ocean passage.
@@Saga47swanSailing A BIG Box of Facts..? 🤠 ... OK! :) Happy Holidays!
Excellent and thank you
@@dontraeger4325 thanks for taking time to let me know. When are you planning to go?
I applied Silic One last spring and last night we, The Hallberg Rassy Owners Association, had a presentation from both Hempel and Copper coat on the future of antifouling. One key point that I found out was that you should not leave Silic One uncovered when ashore otherwise the Hydrogel feature is degraded by UV. I have noticed that my boat has grown a "beard" at/above the waterline which is probably because of UV degradation.
@@johnhfrancis yes, that is correct - UV is bad for a silicone based anti foul paint. If you lift out in a Sunny location, then cover the surface. If exposed to UV, then re coat with 1 coat before re-launch. Where are you located?
Very interesting, heard about this stuff but this is the first report I've seem. Thanks
@@boatbuilderPortishead glad you like the report . There are a few YT about this . Are you planning to use a silicone based anti foul paint ?
It will be interesting to see a real live test of Silica One. I understood that you needed to keep up a good hull speed for it to work, which should work for you. I went down the Coppercoat route and love it to bits.
@@sailingaphrodite4189 yes, the faster you sail, then better the Silic One works. How many years with the coppercoat ? Warm or cold waters ?
@@Saga47swanSailing I had it done four years ago. My usual sailing waters are the UK, so pretty tepid.
appears to be a win!
Yes, very happy with the performance of the Sillic One. Are you considering going for a silicone based anti foul paint?

@@Saga47swanSailing I keep Blue Flame on the Hudson in Nyack, NY during summer. We took her down to Oxford, MD a few weeks back. She'll stay there until the late May next year.
Super useful manouver. I used it in the hardest beat I ever did (18 hours), excellent to take a break, boil up a soup. I had a reefed working jib and reefed main.

The back winded jib sheet is rubbing on the side shroud, not a good thing. The sheet should be led DOWN closer to the deck to a snatch block to prevent chaffing while Heaveing to.

Those seas!!! Nice sailing
@@christopherfranks478 there we heaved to for 12 hours with reefed main and staysail - was very comfortable and calm, despite the big seas
Very cool idea with the hitch!
@@christopherfranks478 we love it too - let us know, when you have tried it out.
The working jib sheet seems to be putting a lot of pressure on the cap shroud. Is that really ok? Should the lazy jib sheet be run inside the shrouds and made fast to take the pressure when the genoa backwinds? Thanks.
@ good observation. In a blow, where we would need to heave to for longer, we would not heave to with the headsail, but have our staysail on the inner stay . The sheets of our stay sail are routed inside the shrouds. We heave too here to show our crew the tactic, for a short period you can heave to with the bigger sail., but watch out for chafe. Thanks for the comment
@@Saga47swanSailing Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I only have a 135% genoa. I've tried heaving to a few times with it, but it was quite difficult. I didn't have it reefed down as much as you did here. I will definitely try that out next season. Larry and Lin Pardey were advocates of using the mainsail only. I haven't tried that out yet. Any thoughts on that? Appreciate your help for us new salts.
@@christopherfranks478 it depends on your boat, only way to find out is to try it. It is likely to work with a reefed main as the yacht ( without headsail) will not have power/speed enough to tack I.e she will lie heave to. Let us know how it goes
@@christopherfranks478 How do you heave-to with only a mainsail? I mean, do the Pardeys say you can do it just the same but without the backed jib? Seems like you might tack unexpectedly without the headsail working as a stop. And then spin in a circle. Curious to understand.
I use this procedure all the time, especially when solo, to reef the mainsail. I have found on my boat with a 135% genoa it must be reduced substantially for a hove to to be really effective. When i have my 110% jib up i rarely need to reduce its size to get an effective and stable hove to situation. My yacht is 33ft in length.
47 foot Swan. Come on now...! I did the same sailing in a Bandholm 27" (Denmark) from Kirkwall to Stornoway and on to Tobermory through the Sky bridge. And on to Port Ellen - Belfast - Dublin - English Channel back to Denmark. Why all the fuss?.
@@ErlingJensen-g4c good on you, well done. The passage was a training & skipper confidence builder adventure - the YT is crew feedback.
Though we never been far or long enough at sea to have to heave to to wait for calmer weather we liked to heave to sometimes to reef the mainsail or a bathroom break or simply to boil water for coffee or lunch. It really slows everything down
Thanks for taking time comment. Heave to is awesome when you need a break or have to wait for the tide at a lock .
