Rusty Wrench Restorations
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 1 พ.ย. 2013
The intent of this channel is to document my adventures in finding, retrieving, and restoring vintage tractors and farm equipment. These videos will document the "Thrill of the Hunt" and the many "Trials and Tribulations" of moving heavy vintage iron, typically not in running condition. My channels main idea is to tell the story of how I restore these machines to like new condition and use them in shows, plow days, and parades. My personal goal is to preserve them for years to come and teach some basic mechanical skills to my viewers and explain how these machines work. There will be tool tutorials, explanations of systems and components, and hopefully some humor to make you laugh. May contain some "Spicy Language" and "Dad Jokes!!!"
Please subscribe to the channel so you can get notifications of new content, and please like and share if you can! Thank you for your support!!!

Changing coolant in a new to me tractor as it tested good to only 10 degrees. Bad coolant can cause an engine block or radiator to freeze and not have as good of cooling properties in the summer.
Can it get any worse???

Learning the rough idle was not from a clogged fuel pump or Bad injection nozzles...... possibly a bad or out of time injection pump.... or bad head gasket??? UGH!!!

Thanksfor showing us the bridge/tunnel. That is beautiful! Also that place where you went looks like you could get lost there for a while just loook around
No problem! Figured some viewers would appriciate the landmark. Yes.... there is a ton to see at this place! If they don't have it they will find it. Lots of auctions held as well.
You are the skid steer king Steve!!😅 You are keeping busy thats for sure! I actually feel kind of lazy because I haven't had a good project in a while. Hopefully that changes soon!! The skid steer sure has come along way! They sure are different now. Putting a little Kubota engine in there will be sweet!
😅😂... they are fun to work in and handy as a shirt pocket.... but dive componants can be pricy.... such as pumps and motors. I started in on the 70 today.... so you should see another video soon. Can't wait to see what your next project is!
25:01 I seem to recall that the 3 pulley shaft pulley had the same sized pulleys. The one closest to the engine (for the accessories) may have been ever so slightly smaller, that the other two. The 2 pulleys for the drive pumps were the same size. I would check with Grainger. I wish you well in your project.
@penguinistas i think your right... I went back through and looked at some pics... they all look about the same. Found one for $70... should do the trick! Thank you!
Regarding clutches, as I recall, one was a centrifugal clutch, the 2nd was a electric / magnetic clutch, and the 3rd was a toggle over center clutch. Regarding motors: the 1st was a 16 HP Tecumseh and the 2nd was a 16 HP Onan.
There ya go... yep... I think that's all correct! Thank you!
Full watch Steve ! 👍🏻👏👏👊🫡🇺🇸
@@tractortalkwithgary1271 Tha k you Gary! My man!
In my own defense your honor, I was left unsupervised at a heavy equipment auction. 😁😁😁
@@penguinistas 😂🤣😂 ill have to remember that one!
I got you stickers in the mail and will be doing a video shortly of putting them on my Quonset shed overhead door. Right now, we are having issues with our Mac laptop and it will not let me do I movie. As soon as we get that issue resolved, we will be back up and running.
My little Case 1816 had a Honda engine in it.
I put the V-twin GX160 i think in the one I restored.
That will be sweet with that Kubota diesel engine in it.
I had a Case 1816 when I moved back here to the farm and I sold it because I had the Kubota tractor and I figured I could just drop the ROPS down. The first time I went to use the Kubota, I discovered it was about 2 inches too tall to get inside the building
Loader tractors definitly have their place... butbhard to beat a skid steer. Much more efficient speed wise as well!
I’m looking to get a Case 1816 to clean out my lower barn with. I have to remove the ROPS to get it inside and for the clearance inside as well
The Bobcat Farmboy and John Deere 70 both came without the ROPS. I had to build one for the John Deere. I understand the need to have them off for work like that... but.... save it... as they are very hard to sell without them.
Good morning Steve!
Morning Gary!
Sweet - gonna be a busy year! Looking forward to all the Rusty Wrench Restorations videos!!
Yes! Busy is good! No shortage of content! I'm excited as well!
Nice
Thank you! Going to be a fun project!
👍🏻👏👏👏👏👏👏👊🫡🇺🇸
Um??? That would be a yes! 😁
Got a letter in the mail today Steve! 😊
@tractortalkwithgary1271 Awesome! Faith restored in the Postal System! 😂🤣😂
That is some really soft dirt
@Jason1Pa it's funny as the day goes on, You can see streaks of different soil types... where it changes from loam to clay to sand.... its like looking back in time to how glacial movements deposited the different soils.
I don't know a buch about dirt bikes, but never mind watching a project take place😊
Won't be many like this..... just wanted to document it. Skiddy teardown to start this weekend!
Have a Mustang 320 which I believe is essentially the same machine so will be tuning in for this resto.
@woodnyardjunkie yes I believe so... I know the Owatonna Mustang 330 is 100% identical.... the 320 i believe is like the John Deere 60. But...... even at that 90% will be the same.... so looking forward to the project and hope i can make the mistakes for you! 😂🤣😂
@@woodnyardjunkie and welcome to the channel!
@RustyWrenchRestorations ok, yes, my 320 is the same as a 90. Think the 60s are the Mustang 310 and the 125s are the 330s. My 320 is the middle version. It has a Kohler 24 hp so that part is fine. Just interested in the hydraulic work. Steering pump...drive pumps and lines..etc.
@woodnyardjunkie we will.learn together..... 😂🤣😂 I think my pumps and motors are all good and not leaking, but they will be removed I will be cleaning out the chain cases, replacing chains and hub seals.... and pumps and motors if needed. Can't wait!
@RustyWrenchRestorations yep all mine are good also, but I'm about due for catastrophe...😆
Great video, you’ve built some awesome bikes. 53:25
@NathanCurtin Thanks Buddy! Hope all is well with you! Saw you had a couple burgers yourself..... fixing both?
@ I completely stripped one yesterday after I had it running and riding. Going to send the swing arm to swamp outlaw and put a 4 inch lift/stretch on it. I’d sell you the other one if you’re looking to get back onto one. I picked both of the big reds and a 350d from the original owner in my hometown and they have sat for a long time not used
@NathanCurtin ill send you a PM. Thanks.
Also love the DEI sticker on your tool box lmao
I even put it on my "GOOD" cabinet 😂😅😂
Awesome video! Glad you got it!
@BrianCauley-m3h Thank you so much! Now for the weather to warm up and get my son out on it! You guys are awesome! 😍
That was a fun video, I enjoyed it. Don't know too much about bikes, etc but they seem pretty simple to work on. Might have to find a project bike sometime. Also, I cracked up at the high speed part near the beginning: "never stops talking..." 😂
@jason.dinsmore yes.... I can get on a rant especially when it's something that excites me or I have passion for..... 😂🤣 They are super easy to work on... ATVs as well.... I thinkbtheybare great seaways into bigger mechanics such as tractor cars etc. Every teenage boy should have some sort of powersports machine to learn to wrench on! Channel will always be 99% tractor related though!
I have 2 Honda ATVs. One is a 2001 Honda Rancher 4wd The other is 2001 Honda 300 Racer ( 2wd) They both have given me all these years of trouble free service I use the 350 Rancher to round up cattle when we wean calves and also when we round up the cattle to send them home We have 2 horses and I prefer the Rancher Not quite the go anywhere that the horses are but I have never had the rancher kick me either
@@tractortalkwithgary1271 They are extremely reliable machines!
Good afternoon Steve!
@tractortalkwithgary1271 Hey Gary! Good afternoon! What are your thoughts on the dirt bike video? Should I stick with just tractors or okay to swap in a different topic every few months?
Thank you very much for the shout out sir!! And for Honda Hoarders too! I really appreciate the kind words!! Awesome video here too. Can't wait to see what you do with it!
@ThisOldTrike Thank you! Love your channel and have seen you grown online over the last decade. Amazing Collection and just a down to earth good dude! Full resto in the spring.... trying to get my son interested again and....... always looking for the ATC honey hole down here! 😃 Ride Red!
If heard you right in the part about the master link retainer, here's what I've been told. The open part of retainer clip goes backwards so it can't get caught and pulled off when the chain is moving in normal forward direction.
That makes sense and seems to be the reason I found as well.
Oh oh !!!
Just my luck! 😂🤣😂
Good afternoon Steve!
@tractortalkwithgary1271 Hey Gary! Hope all is well.
Lol, that moment you realize
@jason.dinsmore fortunitly, it was an easy fix!
@@jason.dinsmore 😂🤣😂🤣😂
I’m thinking of painting mine grey and using it as a boat anchor

Good morning Steve! That machine is beautiful!
@tractortalkwithgary1271 Thank you Gary! Hope it lasts another 65 years!
My trailer is a PJ that has the hidden slide in / out ramps
I loved my PJ, but needed something a bit bigger after this. That crawler was overweight for that trailer.... so I have a video of a 2024 24 foot Lamar 14klb trailer I bought. Now I can take 2 at a time!!!!
Full watch !!!
Thanks!!!! I need to work on less talking and keeping them 20 min or less. Hard to do on some of the tutorial ones!
Now that I have found your channel, I am afraid that you are stuck with me now!!!
Glad to have you here!!!!!!! I have been watching yours as well since I got home. Like minded people have to stick together and help each other out!
I would be in tears man!!!
@tractortalkwithgary1271 It was a hard decision... but it went to a great home and I will save another soon!
What an awesome 430 crawler! Best one I have ever seen!
@@tractortalkwithgary1271 Thank you so much! I had fun bringing it back to life!
You need to hook up with a channel called “ Far Away Farm” Will, the content creator has a 420 crawler that he has fixed up and it still works earning it’s keep.
@tractortalkwithgary1271 I will check it out! THANKS Gary!
Happy New Year Steve!! I think you will get 1,000 subs soon!! Can't wait for the skid loader project that will interesting. Just an idea for channel growth, have you thought about doing a simple giveaway? I did it once with a Ford tractor metal sign. I posted thr drowning on some Facebook pages and told people to Sub and comment to be eligible to win. I think i let run for a week then pulled from a hat for the winter. Just a idea😂
@Jason1Pa Happy New Year Jason! My number one channel commenter! Tha k you as always for the support! That's a great idea! I have plenty of things around here that would make great raffle prizes! I'll give it a shot! Hope you have an amazing year my long time friend! Be safe and thank you again!

@tractortalkwithgary1271 Tha k you Gary! I just subscribed to your channel as well.... looking forward to seeing what you do! Have a Happy New Year! 😃
Exciting! I can already tell, this project is going to make me covet a skid steer! 😄
@jd-k7bpm I have had a few over the years...Bobcat, John Deere, Case. A skid-steer is as handy as a shirt pocket!
I’m looking to see if I can find a Case 1816 to clean out my lower barn I have very little overhead clearance I’ve had one before and it worked very well for me
I love the Case 1816. I've had 3. I fully restored one... sold one as is the other wasn't running.. was thinking of buying it back to put on the channel. The tires on the narrow setting can make it through a 36 inch space! Small but very useful! One day I may do a video on other machines I had restored.
Now we are getting serious!! Special tools and all. I never would of guessed it. That was a good idea to mark the pump. Im curious to see how it ends up. What is the name of that company in Virginia? Ok now I gotta get back to work. 22 minutes of downtime. Good thing the boss is on vacation 😂
I went through Blue Ridge Diesel. So far they have been great to work with. Can't wait to see the final product!
@RustyWrenchRestorations Ok! I don't recall of hearing of them. It's going to be exciting when it gets back
@Jason1Pa yes Sir! I Picked up a 3 point 3 bottom plow to drag behind it already!
Congrats!! 🎉 👶🏻 😂
@@DurnFromDurm 😂🤣😂 it's always a boy! 😂🤣
Hope this solves it for you. Also, congrats on 750 subs, you're 3/4 of the way to 1k! Happy Holidays!
@jd-k7bpm I really hope so too! If not.... I have a top end kit in standby! Yes! 750! I feel like the little engine that could..... I think I can... I think I can... I think I can! Tha k you for your continued support and interactions! The comments help! 2025 has 4 restorations planned.... 70 skidsteer, 300.5, Husky 3 wheeled tractor and a surprise..... not tractor related... see if you can spot it in the video coming out New Years day.... 😉😉😉
First off you are doing a great job explaining everything. I know you said this isn't really a instructional video, but for someone like me that has never worked on anything I find it very educational. Im sitting here in my PJs on Christmas morning watch Rusty Wrench Restoration video 😂😂 Merry Christmas Steve! I hope the new year will soon bring you you a smooth running diesel Deere soon.😊
Thank you Jason! Yep.... 2025 will get this old girl going again. I think im just going to send it to the pros... and focus on rebuilding the Skid Steer for the winter. She will be alive and well soon! Have a Merry Christmas my friend and #1 channel supporter (next to my wife!) Tha k you again for all the encouragement!
Good call , sometimes the most basic thing is i can fix it !! then , why did i touch it ! see you soon on the next video .
@chrisgreig5628 yep... I was going to attempt it... but sometimes we have to know our limits. I've learned that sometimes paying someone to do something is simply buying MY TIME BACK.... and believe me... time is precious! Plus I can start tearing into the skidsteer while the pump is gone!
No line on the left rotating wheel means you are on number one cylinder exhaust stroke, you'll have to turn the motor one more turn to get the two lines to come together. The "dirt" that came out of the timing window is most likley part of the govenor weight retaning ring, a plastic componet that deteroates with time. It plugs up the return line fitting chocking off the injection pump. The ring on the right moves up and down a small distance that is the hydrolic timing advance. I understand that a replacment weight retaner assembly is avalable that eliminates that problem, althow just replacing the plastic ring works for some time. A window is avalable to set the timing it mounts where the cover goes and has lines that reprecent degrees of timing while the motor is runnig a various speeds. Sorry about the spelling and grammer retired diesel mechanic here.
Yes sir... all great info and true to a "T". I saw some videos about the plastic flyweight rubber /plastic peice coming apart. They have an updated one with it welded together or replace with another plastic ring. I've heard of the clear plastic windows... but supposedly they are hard to find now a days apparently. I plan on pulling the injection pump off this weekend and sending it to a good reputable shop I know that specializes in these stanadyne pumps. I think its the safest bet and worth paying a pro. Thank you for the comment.... I can tell you've rebuilt a few in your your time and are very knowledgeable. Might need your oversight on this tractor in the future! Yep... I was 180 degrees out the first time. Knew it was odd to not see the line at all.... now I know that is #1 exhaust... tha know you!
Sure is some heavy iron out there😮
Little bit of everything from mules and garden tractors to CAT diesel swapped articulating behemoths!
