    Hey Jack, you’re clearly capable of building this closure system, but rhetorical question here. Does this system in totality survive KISS? I’ve built three small boats, and looking for inspiration for my next build. I’m thinking and designing around ability to repair in remote locations. Just food for thought. Good luck!

    • @PixieSV
      @PixieSV 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a good question, Michael. Thank you. I asked myself if a normal, off the shelf hatch, would be simpler. And I think it would. However I haven't found any examples that are similar to my idea, so I feel like it falls into an unproven concept area. It may very well not survive the KISS idea, however I think I have to test it to see if it does or doesn't. If my build can prove that it does in fact work, then I think it would be an idea that others could benefit from. That is the fun part of building your own boat. You can try different things that haven't been tried yet. And a benefit of making your own equipment, is that it's usually easier to repair yourself. Where manufactured parts usually require buying a replacement part. I should be able to build it this summer, so we'll find out. Good luck on your next design! I'd love to see what you come up with, so if you ever put up a blog or post a video on it, definitely let me know.

      @@PixieSV oh 100% I completely agree! There is so much fun in doing it yourself. I think that’s what I like a lot about your build so far, it reminds me of building in the past and wanting to build again. Likewise for Sven’s and Perry’s builds. I’m thinking for hatches I’ll be trying to keep things simple, I’ve had hatches break while sailing offshore in a Fisher30 and being frustrated by the lack of simplicity in its construction.

    Why not have the rudder post protrude the hull and have the tiller on the inside?

    • @PixieSV
      @PixieSV 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've thought of doing what Cpt Yrvind did, but that would mean moving the rudder's pivot point closer to the main mast. Which I feel would reduce its leverage overall. On top of that, it would mean that I would have a shallower rudder area, since the rudder can't protrude down further than my bilge keels. By keeping it on the stern, I can have a deeper rudder area, more leverage, as well as the ability to pivot it up when beaching the boat, and if seaweed catches on it, I can simply lift it to clear it off. Plus the ability that if I hit something the rudder will pop up, instead of taking the full, unmoving impact. I think these benefits are worth trying to keep the rudder on the stern. I have come up with a better design on the details of how I would do this and I'm working on getting another video out talking about them.

    • @robinj6997
      @robinj6997 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you can still have the rudder post in the same position and have the tiller on the inside. Big wooden vessels often have an sterncastle as an overhang above the rudder with the tiller on the inside. You would have an tiny aftercastle, the stern would be hugging the rudder post as is now. But that's only an suggestion for the sake of having an option hehe Edit : and also, I think the blueprints look really nice!

    • @PixieSV
      @PixieSV 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@robinj6997 I hadn't considered that. That would be simple too. Hmmm I'll have to draw out a few ideas with that in mind. Thanks for pointing that out! 🤣 I do tend over think things and miss some obvious details. Glad you like them! I'm not the best sketcher, but I've been trying to make them as clear as possible for the videos.

    To be frank, I probably over built it, but I rather over build then risk any warping. I do tend to obsess over small details, which can ofter hinder more than help😂. Trying to draw out perfectly zeroed long lines is maddening. So I've had to force myself to accept a 1-2mm error. Otherwise I'd never get anything done.

    • @PixieSV
      @PixieSV 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      😅 kinda? Lol I took an already designed small boat that had a hull shape that fit what I had in mind and then added the shell that would make it a fully enclosed boat. I was tempted to literally use Cpt Yrvind's videos and build an exact copy of his boat, but he's building for a very specific type of wind direction. Plus it's fun doing my own project.
