Shearing our sheep for the first time!
Come hang out with us in our barn as we shear our sheep! This was our very first-time shearing sheep, and it was quite an experience! The first one took over an hour and we were down to roughly 20 minutes by the seventh (and last) one.
We have a small flock of Finnsheep that we are raising with a focus on fiber. Finnsheep make an excellent fiber sheep with a lustrous, soft, and finely crimped fleece.
I have no idea when our first batch of yarn will be ready. The timing largely depends on how long the mill takes. As soon as it is available, I will send out an email to our newsletter subscribers. You can sign up via the link below:

Why we chose Finnsheep

Meet our flock and learn why we chose Finnsheep for our small, family sheep farm. For the safety of our children, we wanted a sheep that would be small and docile. Finnsheep are extremely gentle and friendly along with being absolutely adorable! MORE ABOUT US: Lost River Homestead is a family owned and operated sheep farm located in Eastern Idaho. We just purchased 2 Finn sheep… going to the Wisconsin sheep and wool fest gets you in trouble… lol. These are awesome little animals.

    I thought your Finn sheep is very calm, and I thought you were doing to cut the sheep, really nice, it's always hard. When I had to cut my sheep even for the first time, I cut them with a sheep scissors, they didn't look very nice. I have had a couple of years without sheep, but just bought 3 merino sheep and 1 finnsheep again and then a Finn ram. So now I'm going again. This is Goggel Translat, because I come from Denmark and my English is not so good.

    Thank you for sharing. I have three new Finn sheeps, and I wonder when I Will shear them. I have two lambs of three months old and their mother. Once a year is a good idea ? What do you think ?

    Hello from NY. I have been raising Finnsheep exclusively since 2010. I currently have a flock of 20. 16 ewes and four rams. What bloodline do your sheep come from ?

    Interesting video, thank you for posting. I am curious what challenges there are with lambing Finn sheep. I understand they tend to have larger numbers of lambs, and was thinking there could be challenges with availability of milk naturally for the lambs. Wondering how much supplementation would be necessary. Is that something you are able to speak to? Thank you in advance!

      @vitamilling3522 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes Finn Sheep can get many lambs, but the normal is 2-3 lambs, but 4-5 lambs are not abnormal and 6-7 lambs are something that happens very rare. A good ewe can easily fit 3 lamb herself, but if you are higher up to the number of lambs, they need help. Many greetings from a sheep breeder in Denmark.

      I raise finnsheep in finland. It depends on the mother. First time moms might abandon some but the older ewes do well with 3-4. Important in my experience is to leave them alone as much as possible during the first days. Our genepool has a lot of variation and some are nearly wild while others are armpitworms like on the video. The wild ones seem to do best with large culls when left alone. Plenty of food - good milk production is also key. We lamb during winter and to kickstart milk production we give oats, increasing toward birth. Finnsheep also need copper so supplementation is a bit different. Ground eggshells also help during lactation. Also as a heritage breed they do well with a bit worse feed, some get easily fat and that might make early pregnancy worse. But all n all, they are awsome, i reccomend watching this video about finnsheep in their natural habitat: Il post separetly

    Check out how they shear alpaca... they tie their legs out and lay them down. We've been shearing our sheep that way and it's way easier and the sheep just lay there so they don't tire from standing. Plus it's easier to get them everywhere

    Lanolin weighs more than you think. It’s possible that the first was heavier because they produced more lanolin.

    All those spots! One of the reasons I’m a hair sheep fan is if they have flashy colors they are on display for the majority of the year vs being hidden under all that fleece. Love how the whole family is around for this activity and your husband did a wonderful job. Electric shears terrify me. I just know I’d slice mine up ugh

      Totally depends on the specific line and can vary from ewe to ewe. I know a few ladies getting a quart a day at peak while lamb sharing, which is great imo from a ewe that small

      I milk some finnsheep eves who have only or mostly rams. Id say on avarage 2deciliters per milking. Makes awsome halloumi 😅 though first time milking took almost an houer but end of summer a few minutes per ewe

    This is such a sweet video, thank you 🙏🏼it's absolutely precious how much those girls clearly love you. I have a couple of (very) elderly babydoll southdowns that I inherited from the previous owner of the property I live at, but am going to start transitioning the herd to Finns later this year - they seem like such a wonderful breed and one that really ticks all the boxes I'm looking for. Very excited about it!!
