Downwind paddling is about an individual in harmony with the the ebb and flow of the ocean. It really is an incredible extreme sport which requires endurance, explosive power, patience, good timing and above all an ability to read the water, surf and tap into the art of going fast with minimal effort. Such an amazing sport and lifestyle.
Whistler MTB Park 20/07/2024 - C More
To hit C-More, you start on Crank It Up before it branches off. This trail has slightly bigger kickers than Crank It Up and like Crank It Up runs into Heart of Darkness for the final run down to Whistler Village. This is the last of the trails I have surviving video for. Whistler is truly the MTB all riders should experience at least once. It is bloody brilliant!!

This smooth, tight blue flow trail is one I took each time I transitioned across from Creekside back to the Whistler Village trails. A really cool and fun trail to ride.
Whistler MTB Park 20/07/2024 - South Park
มุมมอง 433 หลายเดือนก่อน
There are very few jumps on this trail which is located within the Creekside trail network. The fun factor is high though, with the trail featuring fast flowing switchback berms you can really rail and let the bike run on. The forest and creeks it carves through and across are amazing and this is one of the best blue flow trails in the park, perhaps even the best!!
Whistler MTB Park 20/07/2024 - Blue Velvet (Lower Section)
มุมมอง 433 หลายเดือนก่อน
Blue Velvet is an iconic trail in the bike park. I love the lower section with its awesome long wide flowing berms and smooth transitions into some really unique 'up jumps' where the kicker is positioned below the crest of the jump and you launch up and over onto a relatively smooth landing on the other side. They are so cool!!

This is the first video created as part of a new project, the DAZ 4K Series. My aim is to produce very high res vid's from start to finish of all of the best downwind courses Western Australia has to offer. This course begins with a 3km paddle out from Sandtrax Beach North Fremantle to the Gage Roads Marker. From there it is 11.4km of pure downwind with the swell almost directly behind us. In m...

A couple of months ago, I decided I needed an event to attend to put my winter training into practice. The next race on the Australian Ocean Racing Series calendar was the 14 Beaches. Being held on the warm, sunny Gold Coast, it was a no brainer. I entered, headed over last weekend and met up with race organiser and highly regarded coach, Julian Norton-Smith (Paddle 2 Fitness). 28knot SSW.........pretty well ideal conditions for this iconic West Oz downwind course!! Four paddlers and four Gopro's on the water, this edit was always going to be a 'short movie'. Paddling with good mates in amazing conditions, the energy in and on the water was next level!! I hope you enjoy watching our adventure, it was certainly a shipload of fun paddling it 😉😁🤙
Downwind Bliss!! Snapper Run - 16 January 2023

It wouldn't be a West Oz downwind season without at least a couple of adventures on the Snapper Run. A unique 22km course that starts from a calm protected north facing beach. Once we're clear of the shelter of Point Peron, the runs slowly build into conveyer belt like skates with the water funnelling between Garden Island and the mainland providing consistent powerful 'push' through the 'Seven...

Having just taken part in the most amazing week I've experienced in downwind paddling (that's a big call as I have been to four Gorge Downwind Champs) - The 2022 Shaw and Partners WA Race Week, I was looking back on past year's race weeks and came across this compilation of footage I put together as a short film for that year's Bellingham Film Festival. That’s what relaxed paddling with superior wave power-harvesting skills looks like.
Thanks, I appreciate your appreciation of what I try to achieve in a downwinder 😁🙌
Looks amazing, Daz. Bindoon Mtb park a bit closer tho
Ha, yep definitely. I actually rode Bindoon a coupla times in the weeks before I headed to BC trying to get dialled in a little. Good fun out there, but a bit limited riding my 2016 Specialized Fuse HT. I'm picking up a Trek Remedy next week and will be heading back out there for sure.
I was chiming in with that comment as was organised to go to whistler myself ( also had some warm up days at Bindoon and dwellingup)….and now I’m here! Freaking hot at 27 deg today Thanks for the creekside suggestions, had fun over there this morning then the legendary crank it up and A-line. Both are in really good nick for this time of year Turns out paddling doesn’t prepare my soft hands for a full day on the DH bike tho - blisters starting already!
@@CrabStick6015 Awesome you're there mate!! I nearly slid down the A-Line entry a couple of times, but got worried that I'd only get in the way of the shredders. Some sections of track were pretty rough when I was there, but I guess you gotta expect that with the traffic on those trails. Totally awesome though!!
@@CrabStick6015 Grabbed a new Trek Remedy 8 when I got home and heading down to the Murray Valley trails this Friday. Time to get back into some riding.
Just chilling and letting the waves do the work. Just awesome!
😋
AWESOME - hey a question - what is your GO PRO sitting on top of?
Thanks Tony. I have the camera mounted on top of a 60cm pole made from a carbon paddle shaft. There is a video showing the setup in one of my posts from a few years back.
th-cam.com/video/2Z8D2Bhwwz0/w-d-xo.html
This reminds me of crossing the Chesapeake bay (U.S.) in my CD Extreme. I would wait for 'small craft advisory' and then do a downwind crossing. I used to hear Calypso in my head as I crashed through the waves 😆.
Awesome Tim 😆
The 4K looks great! do you guys get out in winter much?
Thanks. We do still get some wind, but it's generally associated with storm fronts. Can be fun, but doesn't line up like it does the rest of the year.
Awesome snapper Run Daz, I the see the West Coast in all its afternoon glory and get home sick thinking about how amazing Perth is !!
It's pretty special David. A little less hectic over here on the west coast for sure.
Beautiful. You always make it look so easy.
Thanks. Staying relaxed and smooth is the key.......what a sport huh 🙌🙌
Perfect motivation to get out there Daz. Great stuff.
Certainly something to work towards Chris.
Nice one DAZ!
Thanks David 🤙🤙
first time I've seen this older vid daz. the sense of speed is really palpable; what an awesome run.
Hi DAZ - met you last week at WA Race week (Rod & Todd) . Thanks again for these videos they have really advanced my paddling skills. Well done at the Doctor - it was a tough one! Good luck in the World Championships!! Hopefully some local knowledge will assist.
Thanks, it was cool meeting you guys and I was really happy my videos and advice helped you...........such awesome feedback and a big part of my motivation for capturing the footage and turning it into videos that hopefully entertain, but also give back to this amazing sport. Yeah, the Doctor was HARD but it was nice to get some good downwind conditions for Worlds. Hope you boys had a great trip and will come back next year despite the lack of wind (surely won't happen 2 years in a row 😁).
Legend, going to get tight at the Mole
🤙 I was chatting with one of the crew setting the race course after I posted this video. He is going to set the turn buoy further out to give paddlers a direct line of sight back to Scarborough, so we should go past the mole a fair bit further out James.
Looks like it might be a little different to Portugal last year.
I wasn't there, but from what I heard....................yes, a little different 😉
Thanks so much for this. Without giving away all your secrets, I wonder if you could post a Strava map or some overlay to show what this line looks like?
Hi Denise. No worries. Happy for you to check out my Strava direct if that helps. Search 'Darryl Khng' 👍
Thanks Darryl, we'll take those conditions, no complaints!!
Every day Paul..........😉
Could always be bigger...
Amazing conditions you've got there!
Yes, definitely Edrisse
Awesome Daz, I really need to get my video up…won’t be as good or as fast as yours though 😂
Thanks, happy you enjoyed the vid. Subscribed and looking forward to your's 🤙🤙
Great video Daz. You clearly had a wide line.
Thanks Julian. Haha, I took your advice and then added to it..........had a really enjoyable paddle and a great time catching up with you and the GC paddlers.
Nice one DAZ! About half way through I had a thought about split screen, with another pole cam on the stern so viewers can see what you're seeing. 10 years ago I did this one: th-cam.com/video/KF7rdRRXaok/w-d-xo.html Antique camera tech!
Thanks David!! Great thinking, I have done a split screen edit before so can do it. Maybe 'How I Catch Runs III' will have to have the two POV's for sure. I watched your video, very cool and very stable for 10 years ago. I like the offset POV, not so sure about the paddling attire..........must have been really cold 🥶🥶😁😁
Surf ski's wow. Hooting downwind. I did it on a sea kayak, but a Surf ski faster and lighter. Wing paddle great for power, and balancing. Awesome video. Some fast paddlers there.
Love your longer videos, using them on the projector when I'm on the ergo so I don't go mad.
That's cool James. When we were in the middle of the pandemic I did think about doing an ergo friendly series of video's of all of our Perth courses..............When you're in Perth next we'll have to say g'day and go for a paddle with the crew.
Man I’ve really got to get over to WA
We have so many DW courses to try out........you gotta get over here!!
A Snapper run with epic glides, camera footage from multiple boats, Tool's Pneuma playing in the back ground. You've raised the bar very high on this one mate!👌
Thanks mate, sharing the love as best I can 🙌🤙
Very nice!! (Pneuma has been in my list of music to use for one of my videos for some time - if I managed a good enough run to justify it)
Goodonya Paul, glad you liked it mate. The conditions were next level and after one of the paddlers (Cam) suggested Pneuma and I listened to it for the first time, I had to use it.
oh so good!
Sooooo good Alex 😁😁
Love this Daz - makes me feel like you're right there coaching me on the water. Great POV and great commentary. Love your work! 🤙
😁😁
good one daz
😎😎
This video really sells that run, wow 👌 What was the wind doing that day?
It's a very cool run Brad. The wind was blowing about 22-25 knots. I've paddled it in 35 knots. Being protected water with no ground swell till you clear Garden Island, the water just funnels through and it gets better and better as the wind increases.
This is awesome. Great skill. A very helpful video.
Thanks Heide. Stoked you liked it and found it helpful 🙌🙌
Love this video :)
Thanks Heide 🙌
Thank god for volume control. But yeah, good job otherwise.
🤣Thanks Craig, yep the music choice has been met with mixed reviews, but once I'd added Calypso, I just couldn't stop!! 😉
You are definitely the man Daz. Mr Julie here.
Great vid mate, that water is magic🤙
Thanks mate. It was an incredible paddle, sublime water that day!!
Looks like you do a few downwind runs up here in Perth! I've just gotten into surfskis and bought myself a Bluefin. I've been learning a lot from your vids, awesome stuff mate🤙
@@bierbarron Haha.....a few 😉 The Bluefin is ideal to start on. Thanks mate, I appreciate your comments and I'm glad the vids help. They're alot of fun to make!! You're more than welcome to come join the local crew anytime if you haven't already. Best starting point to connect is Indian Ocean Paddler's training on Saturday morning's, 6:30am OTW.
Love watching downwind paddling…. Great video!
Thanks Graeme. It is a fantastic sport/lifestyle 🙌
You are the boss of this video genre Daz! 😜

I love your style. You present the olympic idea in it´s best!! Thank for that!

Gday Daz, any tips for a newb? Not a complete newb just to Mandurah. Considering making the trip down to pick up a new ski, hi from Broome. Will be racing on a Storm 610.
G'day James. There'll be some brilliant conditions from tomorrow to the end of the week on the Mandurah Cut run. By tips, do you mean on the actual course or for DW paddling in general??
@@daz-downwindpaddleactionz1551 actual course, ta
@@Rubibi-saltwaterjim Okay cool. When we do the Mandurah Duel course, we launch from 'Manmade Beach' which is at the end of Northport Boulevarde which runs off Old Coast Rd just before you cross the Dawesville Channel bridge (heading south). From the beach we paddle along the canal to the Dawesville Channel, turn right and out into the ocean to start the run north up the coast. I usually angle out till I'm about 1km off shore. The runs basically come from directly behind and are great fun. When you reach Robert Point, you turn right taking a wide line to avoid the shallow reef and come in at any of the sandy beaches between there and the entrance to the Mandurah Estuary. Total distance is about 14km 👍
I like that you are facing the camera and also paddling and narrating what is going on, really good idea. It is tough to capture the subtlety of linking runs. So smooth!!!! : )
Thanks Jon, I appreciate your comments mate. Finding the energy and flow is a subtle thing, as much a 'feeling the shifts and nuances in the water' as seeing them.
You guys are amazing. I know most of you have been doing this a long time but those elite skis in big following seas are a handful. The ease with which you paddle is remarkable.
Thanks John. I really appreciate your comments mate. 7 years later and I still haven't seen conditions like this again. My PB has gone up a bit since then, but I'd love to see how fast I could go in these same conditions............I'll keep dreaming of the day 🤞😁
Great video ,Aloha.
Mahalo
That's some slop/rebound practice water at 3:30. Good job getting through that! Beautiful water and runs. I've enjoyed your many great videos of downwinders in the Perth area, Darryl. Do you paddle through any local places that generate rebound like that?
Sure was!! Thanks Paul, that was probably the most difficult rebound I've paddled in and apparently it was nothing compared to when the swell is up. We don't have any significant sea cliffs or headlands/points in the Perth waters, so rebound like that is not something I'm used to. The paddlers on the east coast paddle in it all the time. It certainly makes the paddlers exposed to those conditions very strong. I'm glad you've enjoyed the video's. My next one will be from The Poor Knight's Crossing in NZ in just over a week's time.
So familiar...looks just like your typical day outside Sydney Heads
Great video! Would love to get there one day.
Thanks SDP. It's an amazing place and a great event.
King of Surfskipaddling. Wow!
Thanks Eine. That was a very cool paddle!! 🙂
Thoughts on the wave deflector…seeing more and more of the elite guys putting them on now?
Hi Reg I started using one on the recommendation of Oscar and in my opinion, they're a must have for downwind. Some people say they act as a stopper, but like Dawid has said, when your nose drives into the back of a run the wave deflector actually causes the nose to come up quicker and it stops you pitch bobbing during a big drop. It also prevents you getting smacked in the chest with water, enabling you to maintain good vision to find your way through and onto the next run and also helps keep your cockpit dry. They are very effective on a double ski too.
@@daz-downwindpaddleactionz1551 some good advice there…time to invest I think
