    In Peel region (Mississauga + Brampton), they do have the bike signals turn yellow when the pedestrian countdown reaches a certain number (like what you described in the video description). However, they don't tend to use protected right turn phases. I'm just thought you may be interested in this. Examples: - Erin Mills Pkwy or Mavis Rd at a usual two-lane road with a left turn lane: bike signal turns yellow when pedestrian signal reaches 7 seconds - Erin Mills Pkwy at Eglington Ave: bike signal turns yellow when pedestrian signal reaches 12 seconds. - Argentia Rd at Winston Churchill Blvd: 11 seconds. A much newer one. IDK why they got rid of the right-turn overlaps, though. - Applewood Hills Trail at Rathburn Rd: 6 seconds. It's a midblock crossing. - Bovaird Dr at NB 410 offramp: 8 seconds. - Queen St at The Gore Rd: 12 seconds - Eglington Ave at Mavis Rd: 17 seconds. I'm guessing the clearance interval was calculated differently when that one was installed.

    • @WestCoastTrafficSignals
      @WestCoastTrafficSignals 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      On second thought, I’m probably wrong considering that PED comes up during the northbound leading left. It looks like the main road pedestrian movements have refuge islands? Perhaps they could run each crossing independently, then overlap it with some of the side-street phases. This may help with compliance, if the pedestrian movements could be made more efficient, regardless of what left turn phasing arrangement is used.

      @@nswtrains3153 It does that for the lagging left turn only. It's because pedestrians not complying with the flashing don't walk/all red is a big problem in Toronto. Normally in Toronto, even when the pedestrian signal says don't walk, pedestrians in Toronto continue to start crossing if the vehicle signal displays a green ball without an arrow. If the signals didn't turn yellow, red, then back to green for the lagging left, pedestrians would still be in the crosswalk when the lagging green arrow is displayed.

    Victoria seems to go with a 4s amber + 1s all-red for their bike signals. Vancouver’s standard is 3.5s amber + 1.5s all-red, but they permit the all-red time to be extended up to 2.5s at locations with high cyclist volumes. I went on Google Maps and measured the curb-to-curb distance at 32.4 meters. Obviously, this is based on the old curb location before the bike lane was installed, in case the curb location changed. I calculated it assuming a 20 km/h approach and clearance speed (since that is the average bicycle speed) and used a faster deceleration rate of 1.2 m/s (since bicycles can stop quicker than vehicles). So the end result was a total clearance time of 7.1s (5s amber + 2.1s all-red).

    • @UsernameIncoming

    One thing I always notice about how Ontario sets up their traffic lights is how messy it is! I'm also not a big fan of requiring two right turn signals on the far side. I think it would be better to have one pole-mounted signal head on the near side of the intersection, and one on the far-side. And legalize red arrows in Ontario so that we can ditch those stupid "left turn signal" and "right turn signal" signs. I'm pretty sure that Ontario will try to do a "signal over lane" approach (e.g. putting the primary traffic signal head over the rightmost through lane and a left-turn signal in front of the left turn lane.), although not everywhere does it. I would love to see signals line up better with the trafffic lanes.

    Here's another thing I noticed: When the South walk signal is on, traffic heading NB/SB can't proceed, and traffic turning left from WB can't proceed. Since there's barely any traffic to the west of the intersection since it's just parking lots and stuff, not many vehicles can go during that pedestrian phase. Everyone is just kind of held up. Here's my idea: if the South crosswalk button is pressed, we can instead make it so that the EB/WB stage can end while the South crosswalk still has the walk or FDW signal, then we can run SB left turns for the rest of that pedestrian phase. This will also reduce delay for NB traffic. If there's no traffic coming from WB, that phase gets skipped entirely and the pedestrians on the south crosswalk will get the walk signal and SB traffic will get a left turn signal. I don't know much about traffic signal controllers, so IDK how feasible this is.

    I like your idea of making the SBL callable/extendable but leaving the W side crosswalk on recall per the downtown pedestrian recall policy. I think the only downside is the cost of installing a detector and reconfiguring the control structure. The operation is not that complicated, there will certainly be enough outputs and phases etc. If they left the SBL fixed time and implemeted the timing I described on the previous video of this intersection, the southbound green would be 13 seconds (7s Walk + 11s FDW - 3s Amb - 2s AllRed) which is roughly what the green would be anyway with detection. In the Netherlands they would likely implement something like what you described but Toronto is so far behind on signal efficiency that they probably have a lot of other intersections that would benefit more from the time and money to reconfigure the phase structure and add detectors.

    • @OntarioTrafficMan
      @OntarioTrafficMan 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      More broadly speaking, it would be great if the City made the side street vehicles separately callable from peds at minor intersections that already have side street detection.
