      Hi Many thanks for your comment, much appreciated and really glad you like the video. I don’t quite understand when you say the pdf is named as lesson 3, I’ve just checked online and it says lesson 1, did you mean that it says lesson 3 when you click on the link or on the pdf itself? This is the first in a series of lessons about chord voicing and voice leading that I am currently filming and there will be a pdf available for each lesson which will have the examples from the lessons in 12 keys. Thanks again Peter🙂🎶

    Hi, very useful advice. How do we know which chord to think of as the tonic (in this case E minor). Do we divide the piece into sections with tonic every once in a while?

    • @peterbeadle1
      @peterbeadle1 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great question, In a nutshell yes, say you had the chord progression CM7, Dm7, Em7, FM7 or CM7, Em7, FM7, in each case there’s nothing to indicate a key change, the Em7 is chord 3 in C Major. Now let’s say you had CM7, Dm7, Em7, A7, Dm7, the Em7, A7 functions as 2 5 in D minor (even though it doesn’t go to a D tonic minor ie Dm6 or Dm#7) If in doubt stick to the cell on the third.

    Great lesson on how 3rds & 7ths change roles in chords a 5th apart Peter, thank you. A lot of chord sequences I see in jazz standard lead sheets don't follow the circle of 5ths (diatonic or chromatic) so how you deal with smoothly voicing them is still a struggle. The 3rd & 7th don't move nice and chromatically. As an example, the first line of 'someday my prince will come' is Bbma7, D7(#5), Ebma7, G7(#5) Cmi7. The shell voicings for these (root, 3rd, 7th) hop around and aren't particulary close. It suddenly becomes complicated with trying to add the #5 and melody in (if they're different!).

      @peterbeadle1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Sorry for the late reply and what an excellent question. The general rule is that if a note in a chord is also in the chord that follows it then keep it in the same place, if not then move to the nearest note in the following chord. If you want to email ( pjamusic@gmail.com) me Ill show you how that applies to those chords in Someday My Prince Will Come Thanks Peter

  • @lawrencetaylor4101

    I have only been playing for 2 years, and made the mistake of thinking I could do jazz exercises early on my path. So I had charts of how to move through the Circle of Fourths, but I was a button pusher. I talked with my piano teacher and we agreed that I have to master triads, and that's what I'm doing. I'm not worrying about seventh chords unless they come up, but I understand them. I've made progress, and I'm happy. This tutorial made sense of those button pushing charts. I had a lightbulb moment with my understanding, and it is stored away. i don't have to frantically take notes, I followed exactly what you were doing. I have heard that jazz shouldn't be taught until someone is a level 8, and I tend to agree. No one likes a mediocre jazz player. Someone with a deep understanding of the choreography of the keyboard impresses me, as does your method of presenting this information. Merci and stay tuned.

Ive just completed the one for lesson 1 and Ive put a link for it in the description below the video and I'll be working on pdfs for all the videos in the series soon. Rather than trying to learn them all in all keys straight away though I would try applying them to jazz standards, the more standards that you learn the more keys you'll learn but it won't feel like just an exercise.

    • @peterbeadle1
      @peterbeadle1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, So glad that you enjoyed the video. At the beginning of the video I was talking about what is sometimes referred to in traditional functional harmony as "Stock Progressions". I first read about these over 50 years ago when I started to study harmony and I bought three books by someone called William Lovelock. I still have these books now, they seem very dated and they seem to start with a list of things that you can't do but I still like them because as the author said, every sentence in them is important and needs to be studied properly before going on to the next one. The stock progressions that he talked about are little melodic patterns such as the first 3 notes of a major scale which composers often harmonised in the same way. These wouldn't all necessarily work in a jazz context but what is really useful in jazz is to become thoroughly familiar with chord progressions which are used all the time such as 3, 6, 2, 5 1which in C Major would be Em7, Am7, Dm7, G7 CM7. Im glad that you asked me this question, I think Ill make a video about "Stock Progressions" to put in my series about Keyboard Harmony.
