Akilah S Richards: Savor Complex
We can't keep using tools of oppression and expect to raise free people.
Akilah S. Richards founded Raising Free People Network as a media and collaboration hub for her inquiries, efforts, findings, and community organizing at the intersection of privilege, parenting, and power.
“I love to facilitate discussions on the intersection of privilege, mindful parenting, and power dynamics. This applies to life at home, community co-operatives, and in work settings, and I’ve facilitated and delivered talks that center these energies in many places across the United States, the Caribbean, and in South Africa.”
The Radical Recovery Summit is a free virtual summit held annually, featuring innovators in the field of trauma and addiction recovery through a social justice lens. We heal trauma by resourcing: we build resilience and strength in our nervous system through direct experience of safe enough connection with others AND by bringing in joy.
In 2024, we are exploring what lights us up! What brings you joy and connection?

I've got it from both sides... My Mom was adopted and controlled by her adopted mother. Who went on to control my mother's first born... Then when I came along my mother finally felt free and then she had to move back in with her controlling mother with her husband and three kids,.. listen to my mother and grandmother fight with each other every day for 13 years. Both of them were alcoholics... My father is the youngest out of 10 from lithuania. He lost his eye at the age of nine and while he was recovering his mother was dying down the hall. His father died from a broken heart when he was 13 so he was basically raised by his older siblings... He was a very passive quiet stay in the background father. My mother's alcohol and Tylenol addiction caused one major surgery after another. I spent most of my life visiting her in the hospital. And watching her become addicted to Demerol and my brother and sister took off and I was left to help her with my dad. She finally died when I was 30 and she was 56... I became a single teenage parent stop in 1990 because I had been physically mentally sexually abused by his father... And then had to deal with him every week for 18 years for visitation. I have complex betrayal trauma from being born with fetal alcohol syndrome and have a night terrors write up to being in my 50s and feeling more comfortable alone... I just bought Mark's book it wasn't your fault to hope I can learn a lot from that

That is part of it. The effect of trauma is that we disconnect from ourselves. Finding a way to come back into our body and with our feelings while we are aware we are safe in the present moment is an essential step. Pete Walker's book The Tao of Fully Feeling is also excellent.

I only found this video now. Thank you for sharing! I could never do this inner work/ healing and other inner work over the past 26 years until now. I have just recently completed Ketamine Assisted Psycho Therapy- 6 infusions over a period of 6 weeks. Ketamine gave me a window of opportunity to do what I couldn't do before. It gave me a window of opportunity to rip out the old foundation and lay a new foundation; to pull out the weeds/Lies and replant with the Truth. It changed the way I see everything. It has given me a new foundation to start the healing process. It is a God given medicine, and with this inner work extremely powerful!

What if my PTSD/AVOIDANT says that their childhood was ok...he's ex Police....everybody only talks about CHILDHOOD being the trauma result......what if it's through something else?? I would like to send this to him ....but it always relates to childhood ?? Or he is NOT/CANT/WONT accept or see that it actually began before the Police Force with his German emotionally unavailable father/relationship!??

This is difficult when someone isn't open to learning more about or going deeply into healing childhood trauma. It is good that the effect of childhood trauma is becoming so much more known in the last several years. Our nervous system takes us into many strategies to cope and manage the effects of trauma. There is certainly more ways we are traumatized as children and adults. Car accidents. War. Systemic racism. Childhood Developmental Trauma (C-PTSD) is what Pete is focusing on in this work.

I'M SUICIDAL AND I CANNOT WAIT TO DIE I LOATHE GOD FOR HE HAS FORSAKEN ME 999-trillion oceans of grief - 999-trillion oceans of rage - 999-trillion endless PTSD flashbacks - I CAN NO LONGER BEAR THIS TORTURE I'm dying on the inside he raped my soul. he gave me SEVERE PTSD. SEVERE SEVERE SEVERE!!! and now he's gone. I blocked him. I want to die. how and when will I ever heal from the PTSD flashbacks? nothing more horrific and debilitating and paralyzing than the PTSD flashbacks. I want to die. I can no longer tolerate the pain. the emotional pain is hell. I hate my life. I am tortured and tormented with every breath I take. RAGE RAGE RAGE I want to die I want to die I want to die I can no longer bear the darkness it consumes me; suffocates me I am drowning oceans of tears my only prayer is for death I'm in hell and I can't find escape God has forsaken me my whole life I've been tortured, bullied, abused, raped all I do is suffer my life is hell SO NOW, IN HOPES TO HEAL, AND TO CHANGE MY LIFE AROUND, I LIVE BY THIS MODUS OPERANDI: When there’s a disagreement, when I need to say YES or when I need to say NO, when I need to state my needs, and ask for them to be met... When I need to create boundaries... There's a possibility and a probability, that someone will inevitably, most likely, be disappointed in me... So I engage in every encounter, interaction, and relationship... In a way that ensures, that the person disappointed in me... NEVER ends up being me! I aim to never repress, never suppress. I aim to never lose parts of myself. Radical honesty only: 100% of the time. Always, all ways.

Such a relief to know that at least some professionals understand that you have to address the underlying root trauma that is causing the addiction. I'm glad you guys can see that it's a way to self medicate. To try to just focus on eliminating the addiction behaviors before addressing the trauma has always struck me as totally illogical and ineffective.

With hindsight, this video shows Pete’s equanimity and compassion. He was clearly in favour of masks. But he did not condemn those who did not wear masks. He understood their perspective. It now turns out that masks were of limited - if not zero - benefit. (Unless you cough in someone’s face and don’t cover your mouth with your hand which, ordinarily, you would never fail to do)

There's not a big thing we do to make that shift. The nervous system is shaped in micro moments. " I've been searching for this answer for a few weeks, so thanks for having Deb on to explain this, plus more detail.

"Love is the will to extend one’s self for the purpose of nurturing one’s own or another’s spiritual growth.” ~ Scott Peck "Courage is the measure of our heartfelt participation with life, with another, with a community, a work; a future. To be courageous is not necessarily to go anywhere or do anything except to make conscious those things we already feel deeply and then to live through the unending vulnerabilities of those consequences." ~ David Whyte "The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us the less taste we shall have for the destruction of our race. Wonder and humility are wholesome emotions, and they do not exist side by side with a lust for destruction." ~ Rachel Carson "Whatever lessens suffering in yourself and others, that is right. Whatever increases suffering, that is wrong. The answer is within you. When you are free of pride and prejudice, when you are calm and attentive, a light will shine within you. Through meditation and through being mindful you will find your own knowledge of rightness. You will be your own light." ~ Satish Kumar “It is probable that the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community, a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living. This may be the most important thing we can do for the survival of the earth.” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh "The great vision of Black Elk foretells of the many circles, circles embracing circles; the mending of the great hoop. Let us all come together and mend all the broken hoops of the world." ~ Dakota Grandmother "There is no more powerful motivation than to feel we’re being used in the creation of a world where love has healed all wounds. We are no longer ambitious for ourselves, but are rather inspired by the vision of a healed world. Inspiration rearranges our energies. It sources within us a new power and direction." ~ Marianne Williamson "So, I love you because the entire universe conspired to help me find you." ~ Paulo Coelho "What now? What now, would the ultimate - in love be? Would it not be, to do what you can, so others can live, what you've come to love? Would it not be?" ~ Paul Jung

"Our minds, emotions & culture, think we can consume & do anything, anytime... but Mother Nature, & our bodies, say otherwise." "While I can't control everything in life, I can control what I put into my body, and into the body of my life." "Consume with discretion. Create with discretion. Command & collectedness follows." "The quality and balance of our connections to all (food, environment, family, community, work, faith, etc.) determines our health (/spirit). Reflect on and adjust to, what's diminished, or out of balance." Send links to people in my community, city leaders & k12 district administration. It is such a relief to hear Dr Mate talk about such important topics . Our doctors can’t or haven’t answered , parents reasonable or responsible, healthcare or K12 education questions related to children health & student safety, to prevent cultural harm AGT children & keep students safe in schools today, from institutional adverse childhood experiences & unnecessary deadly outcomes. Dr Mate gives me hope & a little faith in the doctors, which is more than I had before I learned more about , the normal is a myth book. Thank you . I thought nobody could possibly understand what I have journey through with my own recovery over the decades , and so often listening to the videos. I recognize that somebody does understand that’s great news. Metaphorically speaking, I have a boatload of classmate survivors along the Ohio K12 schools way. Now I have a doctor I believe in , I am confident to share with my community.
