He's already experiencing not enough work. I was in the commercial diving industry for 10 years both offshore and Inland and you will starve to death. You'd have to be making $100 an hour to compensate for all the time that you're not at work. You're going to be lucky to be making $20 an hour starting out even today is inflation rates. Basically, this job is unstable and you will wind up homeless if you do not get away from it

For anyone wondering about alternative paths, I enlisted in the army as a 12d, ADCI, DCBC, and IMCA recognized my military diploma and dive logs and issued certifications. Unlike navy divers we put our hats on ourselves, but people in the industry will still give you shit for it. I’m convinced the ADCI and commercial diving education complex have a racket and are colluding through their pricing and the ADVI requiring attendance at them, and it’s unfortunate there is only one or two publicly funded programs in the country. The ADCI seemed kind of annoyed I went through the process to get them to issue my certs instead of wasting my GI bill to go to a diver mill. DCBC and IMCA actually issues my certifications faster and with less issues than ADCI did. Besides that, for new divers, you play a very important roll in helping fight the rampant wage stagnation that’s plaguing this industry. Ask for more money. Tell your senior divers how much you make when you get it. $30/hr was amazing money in the 70s and 80s, problem is it’s still $30 on average and the 90s, 00s, 10s, and so on have come and gone. If they can’t hire new talent at the pisspoor rates they are offering they will raise them.

Tanks, Dams, Water treatment facilities, marine, ect. DO NOT WORK NON UNION unless you are hispanic then look at the money to be made doing bridges. Also be smart work for contractors Mid West, certain North East and Northern West coast and Hawaii, Alaska.

I would say it’s pretty risky to become a diver. It’s a lot of time and work to get into the field so you have to be 100% sure you want to do it. Then once you’re in the diving industry, you have to again be sure you want to stay in. So if you are a risk taker and you want to go all in then you’ll have to accept your fate.

OK, respectfuly and firstly, where is the divers bail out function test, non return valve check and the pillar to first stage leak check? Secondly, why is the diver not varifying every thing for him self? Note well, this is not a bell dive. It can not even be called a bell bounce dive.

You need to change your saw. In 1992 I built and tested a system of underwater wood pile cutting 16 X 16 inch greenheart just above bed level. My first attempt I did 42 piles in 5 hours. Less that 1 minute to cut each and the bulk of the 5hours was taken up by craning them out as cut.. At that time most people couldn't guarantee cutting 2 per 8 hour day.

To any new divers or students - none of this shit means anything really. Your school begins the moment you step foot on a crew boat in the Gulf or West Coast. You will be wearing a red hat telling everyone above you what you are, a fucking worm, the FNG that they will attempt with a 99% futile rate mold into some kind of hand then maybe by some miracle you might dive. Forget the welding to, that's the biggest rip off I have ever heard of.
