Wespendief-jong - nestseizoen 2022
Op en rond onze camping kun je heerlijk genieten van de natuur. In ons bos leven allerlei soorten wilde dieren, waaronder wespendieven (Pernis apivorus). Elke jaar keren roofvogels terug uit hun overwinteringsgebied in Afrika om bij ons te nesten. In de zomer van 2022 hebben ze één jong groot gebracht.

Elk jaar in hoogzomer is er een periode waarin we de dassen niet op de wildcamera krijgen . Ze zijn dan op vakantie naar hun buitenverblijf. In ieder geval voor één van hen is dat nog niet het geval. Really nice video! You mentioned that only dogs can smell it but I can too! That’s how I found the ones in my two videos! To smell them it has to be really hot day in June July or August.

I always had 2 questions- 1) Is the wax eatable? 2) How do you handle the bee larvas?
ad 1) If you are referring to the flow frames, then most of the flow frame is made up out of plastic. The wax that the bees use to further build out the cells is not really collectable. ad 2) To avoid getting bee larvae in flow frames, you can use a queen excluder, just like in a situation with wax frames in the super. I did not use a queen excluder for several years without problems. However, at some point the queen did lay eggs in the flow frames (mostly drones). I made sure the queen was no longer in the super, and added a queen excluder. I then simply waited until all larvae had turned into bees and had left the cells. The bees cleaned up the cells and filled them up with honey. (B.t.w. drones are not able to go through the queen excluder, either, so an exit should be made available in the super under these circumstances).

@@bugsingreece6346 - Hello Panos, I received you picture, as you know. Your beetle should be a Potosia cuprea obscura. From what I have found, the name Protaetia cuprea obscura is also used for the same species. I'm not sure which one is more current.

In the film below, a female Oriental Honey Buzzard（Pernis ptilorhynchus）has made the similar "kikiki" sound when a group of monkeys passed by the nest (05:19). In this case, I think it could be some kind of alarm call or she was trying to call the male to come home to fight the monkeys: th-cam.com/video/HMVmM4reJ94/w-d-xo.html Since these two species are closely related, I wonder if their behavior could be similar to each other? If that so, that rattling call might serve more than attracting mate.
